Android :: Changing Screen Brightness Programmatically In Android
Sep 17, 2010
I want to change the screen brightness programmatically in android.
WindowManager.LayoutParams lp = getWindow().getAttributes();
float brightness=1.0f;
lp.screenBrightness = brightness;
getWindow().setAttributes(lp);
But this sample code works on cutcake, not on latest versions. I am using latest version of SDK. How can I do it?

There are apparently at least three different techniques for changing screen brightness in the Android OS. Two of them no longer work post-cupcake and the third accepted technique evidently has a bug. I would like to increase screen brightness at the start of a one-view activity then turn the brightness back to the user setting at the end of the activity. No buttons, no second view or second activity. Just a maxed brightness at start and a return to original brightness setting at the end of the activity. The examples of the current technique using WindowManager.LayoutParams that I have located range from 2 lines of code
WindowManager.LayoutParams lp = getWindow().getAttributes();
lp.screenBrightness = 100 / 100.0f;
getWindow().setAttributes(lp);
To several pages of source code and numerous activities. Is there a simple example of maxing the screen brightness at start that someone can provide a link to?

Can screen brightness changes be tested in the Android emulator? I've tried various examples that all use the following code snippet:
WindowManager.LayoutParams lp = window.getAttributes();
lp.screenBrightness = (*some float percentage*);
window.setAttributes(lp);
But I don't see any change in brightness in the emulator. I've tested it in cupcake and 2.2.

Let's say that I have two layouts for a widget: Layout1 and Layout2. The default for the widget is Layout1, but I allow the user to choose which layout they want the widget to be. So if the user changes to Layout2, how do I programmatically change the layout to Layout2? There isn't a setContentView method for widgets like there is for Activities.

I know that unfortunately detecting and changing programmatically data connection (GPRS/UMTS) on vanilla Android is not possible, and the common workaround is to edit APN settings. This is hardly a nice solution. However on my device (Xperia X10) I have an additional setting near "data roaming", that allows to enable or disable MMS and data. I suppose that this is a personalization made by Sony Ericsson, and maybe even other vendors have something like this. Is there a way to access this setting?

I am trying to change the locale programmatically on Android. The code I have below works fine on the Incredible(2.2) and Droid(2.2). However, it doesn't on the DroidX(2.1 Update 1) Anyone here have encountered similar problem ?? Any insight would be helpful.
public void overrideLocale(String languageToLoad) {
Locale locale = new Locale(languageToLoad);
Locale.setDefault(locale);
Configuration config = new Configuration();
config.locale = locale;
getBaseContext().getResources().updateConfiguration(config, null);
Intent intent = new Intent(this, ActivityB.class);
intent.setFlags(Intent.FLAG_ACTIVITY_CLEAR_TOP);
startActivity(intent); }

Anybody have any idea why this is not working under 2.2? (nexus one)
WindowManager.LayoutParams lp = getWindow().getAttributes();
lp.screenBrightness = 1.0f; getWindow().setAttributes(lp);
And yes, the auto-brightness is disabled under settings.

I am looking to add controls to adjust screen brightness locally in my app menu but can't seem to figure out how to do it. I have seen examples to max-out or dim brightness but I am looking to add controls so that the user can control and set the brightness level. Does anyone have any examples, tutorials, source code, or just a place to point me in the right direction?

About custom Power Management... Is it allow for my app to dim the screen programmatically??, the goal would be to send the phone sleeping when a Intent.ACTION_BATTERY_CHANGED event is handled by a BroadcastReceiver, just like its done automatically by the OS (if so configured) after x time of inactivity.

I am working on a remote automated test framework for Android based on JUnit (tests run outside android, interacting with code inside it). It's all working fairly well, but one issue I have is that when I automatically start a fresh emulator, the screen starts out locked. This appears to affect my tests being able to run, plus, I want to watch the tests run (buttons clicked, text typed, etc.). If I manually start an emulator and unlock its screen, all works well.
Is there a way to programmatically unlock the screen in Android? A Java API, a command line or shell command, etc. would all be fine. Barring that, perhaps there is a way to start an emulator unlocked?

As we know that Android phone gets locked after screen timeout. But I want to lock the phone on demand as well. i.e. without waiting for screen timeout to occur.. As in nexus android phone there is hard button on top for making screen turn off and lock the phone. i have to do same functionality but by using soft key i.e. in a programmatic way. What are the APIs or routines that can help me ? Can someone point me for getting this functionality?

I have some questions related to Android's home-screen contents:
1) Is there a way to programmatically delete a home-screen shortcut on Android? I know that it can be done manually but I want to do it in code.
2) Is there a directory where all the contents of the home-screen are stored and, if there is, is there a way to update the contents of this directory?
