Does anyone know if there is a support for cell broadcast on Android?
If yes, can anyone point me to any example that shows how to use it? (e.g. receive messages on some channel)

I'm writing an android application that collects cell signal strengths.I am having trouble getting the "current" cell signal strength, but I don't have any problem getting the "neighboring" cell signal strengths.To get the current cell signal strength, I created a PhoneStateListener and implemented the onSignalStrengthChanged callback.It works, but not very well.It seems like the signal strength hardly ever changes, and resolution jumps to only a few numbers.I would accept the answer that the resolution of the signal strength hardware is coarse, but when I use the TelephonyManager's getNeighboringCellInfo() method, it works much better.The signal strength readings from neighboring cells change frequently, and they have much better resolution.So, how can I get the current cell signal strength in the same way that I am getting the neighboring cell strengths?It seems odd to me that the functionality of the neighboring cells is better than the current cell.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to figure out if a system event broadcast is broadcasted using ordered broadcast or normal.The event is EVENT_REMINDER and in the source for the calendarprovider i noticed it sets up a alarmmanager to sent the broadcast. I can't find how the alarmmanager sends it. My guess would be as a normal broadcast , But while i was trying some things i noticed i could delay the system's notification (tried up to 10 sec) by building a sleep in my broadcastreceiver. This would indicate that they are handled ordered , and the systems receiver is only called when mine has finished. But can i be sure of this behavour?? (in all 1.5> sdk versions) the docs state that in some cases normal broadcasts are also handled ordered..due to spare of resources.

I don't need any interaction from the user so I don't need an activity and have been trying to do everything through the manifest file. I've put a log event into my onReceive method but it never logs anything so I'm presuming my method is never called. I've tried this with both the 1.5 and 1.6 SDKs. I was hoping somebody could have a look at my code please and let me know if there are any problems.

Does this just mean I am in a bad cell zone? This is my reading at home and it is the top battery usage on the chart, followed by wifi at 24% (on because I am home), and phone idle at 23%.

There is a method getBitmap(ContentResolver cr, Uri url), but i don't know how to get the Uri of one certain image.
I'm heading out to Haiti next week to volunteer with the earthquake relief effort. The NGO base where I'll be camping will have WiFi for a couple hours a day. I don't want to lug a laptop down there but want to stay connected to email. Do you know if there's any issue using WiFi without cell service?I don't have a desire to be using the cell phone service while I'm there; email will be enough.

View 35 Replies View RelatedIm trying to figure out the consumption issues with my battery and cell standby. it is currently responsible for 39% which is at the top of the list just above phone idle. what really concerns me though is my time without a signal is 49%!! but everytime i look at my phone it has 3bars! how can this be? and im assuming this is whats killing my battery? it should be noted that i dont think i have the "bug" others seemed to have.

I have a cool app called GPS test that shows the GPS strength - bar chart and number and color - of GPS signals.
I have another app called No Signal Alert that tells you when you have lost your signal. I emailed them to incorporate a signal strength meter, as it seems a logical app to have it.
For the past couple weeks my phone has been acting very strange and has been getting pretty poor recpetion. I run BB.4 and P3Droid 1.0ghz and 3e baseband. I have tried .41 & .43 and did not get any better reception. Basically the issue is i get 3g for a while and all of a sudden i get 1x where i should have full 3g. If i shut my phone off and turn back on I then get 3g service back. I ultimately noticed it while in Chicago and i had terrible service when everyone else had great service. In Chi i went through all the basebands with no luck. Yesterday I restored back to rooted 2.1 by Pete and i still had a issue. So what i am looking for is there any settings i should look for that maybe off. I doubt its a common issue and i want to look at everything before calling to get it swapped out for a like new droid.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI checked to see if I have the cell standby 50% bug and I do. My up time is 11:34:50, my awake time is 3:47:48, but if I look at the cell standby it says time on 14:42:16. How can the cell standby thing be a longer time than my phone has been on? I did the leak 2 days ago, so it's not showing that time or anything.

I ask because I im a dallas cowboys fan that lives in New York so most games aren't broadcast. The nfl mobile app lets me watch live feeds and games, but as you can imagine the screen is only so big. I'd like to watch the video on my computer screen. Is this possible or should I just look for some website that would ultimately do the same thing?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am developing an application which is communicating with the server. Tha application can perform log-in and get different parameters from server.
The application consists of a RESTful client (custom class for making requests), Communication Service (the service which runs in the background) and the main activity.
For now I created multiple broadcast messages and multiple broadcast receivers in the main activity so when the application performs login operation a receiver (loginBroadcastReceiver) in the main activity receives a message and when another parameter is received from the server different message is broadcasted and another receiver handles the message.
This way however the application performance is poor but I am not sure whether it is due to multiple broadcast receivers.
Does anyone know what is the best way to exchange data between service and main activity - is it better to create a single broadcast receiver and retrieve all parameters from message or is it better to initialize multiple broadcast receivers for multiple parameters?
I was given a phone which I'd like to test out but not activate the cell service on it. (just use it to download apps via wifi etc) Can I somehow activate this phone (moto droid r2d2 version) without having to deactivate my current dInc?

I am at work and I got the urge to download final fantasy 7 to my psp. Working at a bank there Are no open connections for wifi. Wait I got a droid. One prob. My psp is unable to fins the droids broadcast. I tried to scan and also tried to manually set up the connection. Any ideas?
