Android :: Can't Set Emulator's Dns Servers On Windows / Fix It?
Apr 4, 2010
Right now my app needs to use the device´s (emulator´s) Internet connection. Ive read before that since my computer has Internet the emulator should be able to access it. On linux everything works but on windows the emulator can´t find the DNS I´m using, event if I add -dns-server 8.8.8.8,8.8.8.7 on Eclipse´s launch options.
Ive tried on Android 1.6 and 2.1. Is there anything else I should try?

I found following documentation with 'emulator-
-dns-server <servers> use this DNS server(s) in the emulated system
so how do I specify multiple servers?
Comma separated, blank separated, colon separated, repeating the switch multiple times?

I know that Google elected Windows XP (eXtra Problems) to be the minimum operating system, but was anyone here able to run it on win2k? Being able to run the emulator OR install the native driver (to debug in the device) would be enough. I really would not like to have to buy a new computer just because of android. Since I already work with many other platforms without problems.

I'm at complete odds over configuring a proxy to inspect the HTTP(S) traffic for the app I'm developing. I've tried running Fiddler2 and Charles Web Proxy, both run on 127.0.0.1:888, and starting up the Android emulator with the parameter:
To test it out I open the Android browser. I see in Fiddler2 that the request is routed through the proxy. However, only RARELY does the request receive a successful response. In most, and when I say most I mean 99% of the time, the request is retried and fails again with the Android browser telling me "The server failed to communicate". Has anyone found a way to configure Fiddler2 or Charles for debugging HTTP(S) traffic through the Android emulator?

I cannot get the android emulator v1.7 on Windows XP to resolve DNS host names I know this is an oft-visited topic on these forums, but after reading the threads I have not found "resolution". I am running the emulator on Windows XP, on a notebook with a disconnected ethernet interface and a connected WiFi interface. My network is behind a router at 192.168.1.1, which provides DNS to machines on my network, according to the settings given to it by my ISP. I am not overriding anything in my hosts file. I have tried specifying "-dns-server 192.168.1.1" to the emulator, but it complains that it cannot resolve that host name and will use the default. I have tried specifying a DNS server on the Internet via "-dns-server tasty.cornbread.com". The emulator again complained that it could not resolve the DNS server. I have tried disabling my unconnected NICs. This did not help. I have tried specifying -verbose to the emulator to see what it is using for DNS, but I didn't see anything in its output regarding DNS (except the suspicious ndns=1). No other application that I use on this machine has any problems with DNS. I have run out of ideas.

I come from a .Net background and recently x-training to java.
I wanted to develop an Android application that required simple functionality to communicate with a server. For example, functionality such as post a username/score to a website (or service), or request information such as top 10 scores.
What type of communications should I focus on? What is the common technology to use? Does Java have the equivalent of WCF? Or does it have some sort of simple web service? Can web services be secured with authentication?
Ive heard other references to xml-rpc. Should this be something I should look into?

I have the HTC Eris which is my own private device. I am currently synced up to my employers email server which allows me access to my work email. I would like to sync my home computer and email to this device and I don't know how to go about it. Also, if I do this, would all of my info be private or sperate from my work email? Again the Verizon account is my own plan and this is not a company provided device.
I also would like to know how to transfer photos from my phone to my desktop . Do I need an app for that or can I just sync to my desktop and transfer them directly?

Is it possible to install MySQL and Apache servers on an Android device?
One of the requirement was that the Android app has to communicate with a local server via Wifi (via browser for accessing PHP pages).
Instead of that, the whole server side (including MySQL, Apache), has to be transferred and hosted on the Android device, so that the device doesn't have to use the Wifi.

I got a Samsung Galaxy S4 last week. My home internet provider (Bell Aliant) seemingly does not allow SMTP relays from my wireless provider Koodo (Telus). Outgoing email does not send when I am not connected to wi-fi. I've seen this problem mentioned several times on the forum but never a 100% solution. iPhone email client allows 2 SMTP servers to be specified. Are there any android email clients that allow this?
I have a temporary solution where I have the native email client configured with the Bell Aliant SMTP server and K9 configured with the Telus SMTP server. I receive email to each and send from one or the other based on whether I am connected to wi-fi or not.
K9 allows you to configure the account twice but email still comes in twice and each email shows up twice in the combined inbox

Question here, how does the OTA servers work? I don't understand how only SOME handsets are receiving the 2.1 OTA update. There are some people with multiple stock 1.5 unmodified Eris's in the SAME household on the same vzw account where only one eris has received the update while the other one still awaits why? In what sort of communication and what software is in control of this, what decides what phone gets it and what phone has to wait longer till it receives it? I have my Eris activated on All tel, I changed the PRL to my local all tel's PRL, changed the 3g login info to All tel... Been like that since the end of December, I received an OTA update for 1.5 way back when even with my phone activated on all tel, does that mean it is GOOGLE doing the OTA control or is it verizon?... Very strange if you ask me.

I am swithcing from my BB Curve and was wondering if anyone that has received the HTC DI is using on a Corporate email server. How does it work? Do you need the $15/month Corp Email Server subscription from Verizon Wireless. Everyone at Verizon tells me I need it, but they can't tell me why. Are emails/calendar/contacts updated instantly?

My guess is, it is through GoogleBackupTransport.apk (/system/app/GoogleBackupTransport.apk) ?
I had a look at Google's Developers Guide to Backup , but it is unclear if this applies to the backup of WLAN passwords as well, nor if the mentioned "backup transport" is indeed GoogleBackupTransport.apk.
So, if I remove GoogleBackupTransport.apk, my WLAN passwords won't be uploaded ?

In my efforts to track down a wake lock that was eating battery, I installed Network Log. I found s something a bit disturbing. WiFi Mouse by necta.us, an app in Google's app store to let your touchscreen act as a mouse, Would
A) not exit after pressing back and hitting "yes" to exit but rather,
B) continue secretly running, making occasional contact with various servers in China. Overnight it contacted 15 different IP address, all of them Whois showing as a variety of Chinese companies with different names and address blocks. Sometimes it would use port 80, usually 224, 226, 226, 227, 228, or 230. This would happen at least every 15 minutes and some of the transfsers were up to 9.7k in length. After exiting, none of the traffic was to my wifi mouse server application. Some of the IP blocks included:
119.161.221.218:226
110.173.1.68:228
42.51.12.84:HTTP
I understand there are legitimate reasons for an app to do this. Perhaps checking a license. But this is downright scary and excessive, especially since it continues after one "exits" the program. My next step will be to install shark and take a look at the packets' contents.
Edit: installed es task manager to kill it, but it's not running. Somehow it's being signaled or on a timer. Next stop is systemcleanup to take a look at its activities and permissions in detail.
Edit 2: had to force stop it, it was running but not showing up in task manager. It's permissions include reading and modifying usb storage and of course full network access.

I have had DC 2.08.1 installed for about 2 weeks with no issues. I decided to go ahead and partition the SD to utilized apps2SD as I was having memory issues. That process, while not smooth, went through okay and the SD card is working with the partition and apps2SD. However, ever since that was completed, my Windows 7 box no longer recognizes the phone either as a phone or as a drive. My Linux laptop recognizes the drive without issue.
Any suggestions on how I can reintroduce my phone to the Windows box, at least as a drive?

So before the update yesterday, I loved my Captivate. GPS worked great as did the rest of the phone. I figured since getting the update message, I would go for it. During the update the service was pretty bad in the office so I canceled the download to continue it when I got home. When I went to continue, it automatically rebooted my phone and applied the partially downloaded FW and completely bricked the phone.
Since last night, I have exchanged my Captivate twice. Each time the phones have major issues. Forget about locking onto satellites, it can't even get any in view in the middle of the street. On my current phone, forget not being able to connect to AT&T servers for the update, I can't even connect to Android Market...
I spoke with AT&T and the CS Rep made a special note on my account that told the store to not let me leave until I have a phone that has functional GPS, updates and fixes whatever issues I have. Additionally I was offered a credit to my account for the inconvenience. Add to that the CS Rep made a note to call me on my 30th day to make sure everything is working and if not, we will see where we go from there (cancel, extend the return period...).
Now I'm not sure what to do. I will try one more exchange but if that doesn't work, I'm considering going back to my dumbphone for now... I doubt I will get an iPhone4 and after 4 Captivates, don't think I will keep exchanging.
Sorry to vent my frustrations but this has been an aggravating couple days - even more so that my bricked phone worked great in all aspects.

First, my phone info: Galaxy S2 I9100, ICS 4.0.3
My question: How do you restore app data from Google servers after a factory reset?
When I upgraded from Gingerbread to ICS, the phone warned me I would be losing all my data. Fortunately under "Settings - Back up and reset" I had checked the "Back up my data" as well as the "Automatic restore" options. When I completed the upgrade to ICS I not only automatically retained all my app data, but I didn't even have to re-download any apps. All my apps I had on Gingerbread, along with all the data, had been successfully and automatically carried over to ICS.
Recently I've been having issues with my home button. After rebooting and some other troubleshooting, I decided to factory reset my phone. Again I made sure the "Back up my data" and "Automatic restore" options were checked. When I completed the factory reset it was like I just powered on my phone for the first time (OBVIOUSLY this is to be expected as I performed a Factory Reset).
Under the "Automatic restore" check box it states "When reinstalling an application, backed up settings and data will be restored". So I began to download and reinstall the apps I had before. The problem is NONE of the apps restored with the data I had backed up to Google servers. Did I do something wrong?
I'm a bit irked because I believe I received the exact same "you're going to lose your data" warning when I upgraded to ICS AND when I performed this recent factory reset. The difference is when I upgraded I got all my stuff back, so I figured after the factory reset, when I reinstalled my apps I'd get the data back too. I think it's only fair if Google really WILL restore data after an upgrade, but NOT restore data after a factory reset they should annotate that in their warning. Also maybe include a statement like, "After performing a factory reset you will not be able to retrieve app data from Google Servers. We recommend installing a third party app to save your important app data." But instead you get the same warning with two different results.

some apps sending GPS and phone# data surreptitiously to advertising servers
Some Apps caught sending private data to advertising servers
you may want to check if your apps are on the list & decide if you're OK with keeping them.
I believe I have the BBC app installed.
I just checked but my BBC app looks like it is the official one

I have an SGS2 with the latest ICS release (rooted). I work with two companies supporting sync with the exchange server (2010) on a smartphone.
I can set up both exchange servers at the same time. The first day the both work, but on the second day one of the two (so far always the same) start giving me connection errors, and will no longer sync emails.
I am almost sure that the problem is that for security reasons, both want to have their security policy (admin privileges etc) enforced over my phone, and when they re-check daily they find that the policy is not as they want it. to overcome this?
