Suppose I have code in the onStart() handler of my Service to launch a thread to do some stuff and then call stopSelf().stopSelf() gets called before the thread finishes.What exactly happens?I've tested this out myself and my thread continues to execute until it is finished.Does Android hear the stopSelf() call, but postpone it until the thread is finished?

I have an application that starts on boot using a broadcast receiver, also I have an activity and a process, because the service must run always on the background I am starting the service on it's own process using the android:process manifest tag.The ui is only for presentational needs and I would like the user to be able to run the service even if the activity is not active.when I press the back button or the home button the activity's on destroy method is called and the service although seems its running (it appears on the task manager) its not behaving as supposed, it should connect to the net and send some data but every X time using an timer task but the task never fires so the data are never send.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've created a class which is an extension of Thread. This class hits a web service and throws some data on screen. I don't care about persisting this data (the screen displays search results).
Currently, the user simply types into an EditText and clicks a search button. I'd like to take away the search button and implement something similar to Google's Instant Search where, as you type, the search results get updated.
This means, as the user types, the search parameters change. I want to be able to kill the currently running thread (if one is currently running) and spawn a new one with the new search string. How can this be achieved? Can I do it with Thread or will I need to use a new object?
My program threw a NullPointerException the other day when it tried to use a Handler created on another thread to send that thread a message. The Handler created by the other thread was not yet created, or not yet visible to the calling thread, despite the calling thread having already called start on the other thread. This only happens very rarely. Almost every test run does not get the exception. I was wondering what the best way is to avoid this problem for sure with minimal complication and performance penalty. The program is a game and very performance sensitive, especially once it is running. Therefore I try to avoid using synchronization after setup, for example, and would prefer to avoid spinning on a variable at any time.

Hi, I've noticed that on android, the call to pthread_join does not suspend the calling thread. I've a number (6) of new thread created using pthread_create and pthread_join is called on each thread. But It does not suspend the main (calling) thread. I believe this relates to the port of pthread lib to android.

Being that, it will start a client thread and a server thread.I know Services themselves run in the main GUI thread, so I'll have to start a couple of independent threads (or Asynctasks?) for each server and client. I am running a thread that makes network requests but if the network fails I would like a dialog message to be displayed to the user. This process is rather involving since it requires making AND displaying the request in the UI thread. I can wait for the user's response to the dialog by simply adding a Loop to the network thread and wait for a message to be send from the UI thread. This allows me to encapsulate the network requests in a while(tryAgain) thread. All works well except when the Looper.loop() method is called the second time (after a second network error dialog is displayed) and a message is sent by the dialog (in the UI thread) to the network thread's handler:

I've checked that the thread is still active with handler.getLooper().getThread().isAlive() which always returns true but it still gives me "sending message to a Handler on a dead thread". How is it that the Message/Handler has decided that the thread is dead? Shouldn't it rely on the .isAlive() method? In the end I am trying to avoid replicating the thread management build into the Android OS .

I'd like this to just sit and do nothing until any application wants to give it data to send. That's all well and good.I have register an intent filter and the usual stuff and can process the data. But I want to process the data coming from different activities in different threads (subsequent calls from the same application will be computed on the same thread).Is there a way to get the calling package or app or whatever? I'd prefer not to require passing in an identifier as an extra to prevent spoofing. (It's not a serious security concern, it's just each application needs its data processed in the order that it's received.)

Below the code from that example. everything shoud work ok, but when I try to do a call inself (httpTransport.call) I get "Permission denied (maybe missing INTERNET permission)" exception. Moreover, I don't see in the Application info window among permissions the internet permission alert. Tried this on emulator and Google phone. Will be very appreciated if somebody could help with it. I'm pretty sure that android services are going to be the end of me.I have almost no hair left after the last few days.At first I was having a heck of a time getting the service to bind on an onclick of a button, got that straightened out from help here yesterday. Now I actually want the service to bind in the onCreate() method of the activity. That part is no problem, works as intended.My service is actually a socket service to connect TCP sockets to a socket server that I wrote.If I put the call to the method from the bound service mBoundService.StartSocketServer() inside a button click, bingo, works great. But I need this to fire up immediately when the activity loads, so directly under my bindService() call within my onCreate() method of the activity.When I place the call to start the socket inside my onCreate() I get a force-close.
This method (StartSocketServer()) spawns a new thread then opens the socket on that thread to my remote machine.I'm guessing that the problem lies with the new thread generation before the activity fully loads not sure.LogCat is fairly cryptic here. It does say something about thread attach failed, then shows an uncaught handler exception that has "Caused by: java.lang.NullPointerException" within it.Again, if I put this call to the method inside a button click, I"m in business, if it's in the onCreate() it fails. Is there some way inside an activity (presuming that my assumption is correct that it needs to fully load before spawning a new thread) to call the StartSocketServer() after it's loaded: ala body.onLoad() in html?
I have a .Net Web Service which returns a single integer value. When i call upon it from my application, no value is returned. Nothing at all really happens. I set up breakpoints and watched it's progress and it seems the problem is coming from when i get to this line:androidHttpTransport.call(SOAP_ACTION, envelope);
I have a hunch that my URL string is the problem. I've tried replacing the "localhost" in my URL string with my local and network ip with no luck. Whenever i replace the localhost with the ip in my browser i get Server Cannot Access or Unable to Connect pages. Does anyone know a solution to this problem?
A service is setup by an activity with startService(service_intent). This service is meant to run 24 hours a day. After some amount of time, 5 or 6 hours sometimes but its not predictable, the service is killed.In the database log, the destroyed message does not show up and the notification #1 is not cancelled. Android makes no attempt to restart the service. The database log will show the startup of the replacement service if I trigger it by visiting the activity. What can I do to keep this service running or at least get it restarted by android automatically?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am continuously running a thread in my activity which fetches lat/ lon information and the overlays on the map are updated dynamically through a handler. The overlays can be varying in number and can change dynamically. The thread is interrupted in onPause().
I am over riding the onTap() method in my Itemizedoverlay, where I want to call a dialog or may be start anothrer activity which describes that particular overlay item.
Every time I click on the moving overlay my app force closes.
I am basically using same onTap() method in http://developer.android.com/resources/tutorials/views/hello-mapview.... .
If it is only a Toast message and not starting a dialog/activity then it works fine.
I want to stop currently running thread but -Thread.stop() - Thread.destroy() are DEPRECATED so can any one tell me how to stop the Thread .

To prevent tying up to UI, I understand that I can do this in another thread. (I thought I could just-as-well fetch this remote data from within a service, but that appears to tie up the UI thread also). So now I'm beginning to think I need to either run the logic from a new thread within a service, or run a service within a new thread. But which? Is there a way that a Service can report back to the calling activity when the Service has reached a particular stage of processing? Consider a music player activity that initiates the actual music playing in the background as an Android Service. I want to detect and inform the Activity when the Service has reached the Mediaplayer's onPrepared.
