Android :: Black Screen Problem With Graphics Update Using UnlockCanvasAndPost()
Apr 14, 2009
I am working on a game for Android. I'm following the general program layout of Lunar Lander, where a SurfaceView has a worker thread that runs the main game loop. That loop updates the physics and redraws the screen by creating and drawing to a canvas.
From the thread class:
CODE:.........
I believe surfaceHolder.unlockCanvasAndPost(canvas); is supposed to release the canvas and force the screen to redraw correct? That's not what I'm seeing. I'm getting strange behavior where the final draw works, but each previous draw only shows a black screen.
For a better example: I draw a small character sprite at the left side of the screen. Then, for each successive frame of 100 frames I translate the image one to the right. So I expect to see the sprite slide to the right as the program runs. Instead, the screen is black the whole time until the end, when the sprite appears already on the right side of the screen. It's as if the very last call to unlockCanvasAndPost() is applied to the screen, but the others are hidden or not drawn. I've verified that they are, in deed, being executed.

When I soft rebooted a few weeks ago, I lost a bunch of settings (like wallpaper, default notification sound, skype). Also the HTC weather widget stopped updating on its own. I can manually update it but it stays at one location, not the one I am at. Used to work fine. Seems like "my location" doesn't update for it. I ahve tried to reboot, reload widget, reset my location settings - no change. My stock web browser also resets at some sites (this one especially). Never had this issue before.Tried to update my profile and the screen just goes black. Stays that way until I hit the back button.

After buying a HTC Desire in August, I've been very happy with it. The best phone I have ever owned. And after rooting it and installing LeeDroid's 1.9a ROM, I've been enjoying the tweaks and a2sd+. Anyway, I have a Telus Desire which I unlocked and am using with Fido. I followed this guide to root and this to install the LeeDroid ROM.
Ever since then, however, I have not been flash any new ROMs. When I flash a new ROM using ROM Manager, it goes to the white screen with the HTC in green then the screen/phone just shuts off becoming unresponsive until I take the battery out then in again. When I open ROM Manager, it gives me a pop-up that says "Recovery Failure" with three lines which say:
- Recovery mode is "broken".
- ROM Manager doesn't reboot.
- Other.
I tried to reload the clockwork recovery using ROM Manager and Unrevoked. Didn't seem to fix the issue. There is an official OTA update that I couldn't install due to the same issue. If you have any input as to how I should fix this issue

Yesterday I received an OTA with 2.2.1. After unpacking and installing the update my phone rebooted as normal. When booting the Nexus-logo appears, but afterwards the display remains black. There are indications that the phone boots up as normal, as I can hear the sounds (ex emergency-call) when pressing the display. The display works perfect in boot-menu (rescue etc)
I've tried to do a factory reset and pulled out the battery several times to try to reset - all with no luck.
In addition I've placed an update.zip on the sd-card in order to perform a new manual update, but after choosing recovery, my phone restarts and the screen turns black. Any idea how to solve this?

I just plugged into Kies and performed a Firmware update, which I assume was the Froyo update. It all ran it's course perfectly and the phone then went to reboot. Following this, it hung on the Galaxy S animated screen before simply going to a black screen (I know the phone is still on, because the two bottom corner buttons will light up if pressed).
I realise that this black screen is quite common, and that people suggest booting into recovery mode. The problem is, I've never been able to get my phone into recovery mode. I turn the phone on and hold down Power + Home + Voume Up for a couple of seconds and then let go... it does nothing, it just goes onto the Vodafone screen and then carries on booting.
I also tried holding down these buttons for a little longer, but all that it does is pushes the phone into a constant restart loop (as obviously I'm holding down the power button).

I was rooted and and had lagfix on my fascinate. Then I decided to download the new update from verizon today. After the update the update screen kept on popping up even after I already installed it. Then I found out that my apps that require root like autokiller and setcpu did not work anymore even though I still hade the superuser app. So I rooted my phone again restarted it and the apps worked again then I decided I wanted to do the clockworkmod installation thing so I could make my phone flashable, the instructions recommended that i remove lag fix so I took my phone plugged it into the pc and went to my ryan lagfix folder whatever on my desktop and clicked on the unlagfixme.bat thing and at the end it had some errors or something even mentioning the Innopath Activecare in it which was for some reason probably why it didnt work. So I decided to try it again and it didnt work. Then I rebooted the phone and I saw the samsung logo and then black screen!

I'm implementing a fairly standard app with the Android sdk that involves drawing using the SurfaceView, SurfaceHolder, Callback setup.
In my main thread (UI thread) I have no drawing or handling of the SurfaceHolder (or the canvas you retrieve with it).
In a separate thread I have the following:
CODE:...............
This code is being executed, throws no exceptions, and has no negative side effects that I can find; however, the unlockCanvasAndPost() call never causes onDraw() to be called.
In other words, unlockCanvasAndPost() does not cause a redraw of the SurfaceView.
Any ideas what could cause this symptom? I have plenty of java experience, a fair amount of android experience, and a lot of debugging experience and cannot track this one down.

HI took a look at the home screen widget design recently and I tried to deploy a simple widget with 4x1 portrait background provided in Widget.I tried it in HVGA emulator (screen size 320x480 or something) and on Nexus One (screen size 480x800) and the widget seems to be the same size with respect to other UI elements (search widget etc) on both devices. How is that possible when one screen is 320px wide and the other one is 480px? Is the graphics in png format being automatically resized somehow based on screen width? If so, is it better to create the home screen widget graphics to make it perfectly fit to HVGA screen with 320px or is it better to create the graphics to fit the largest screen width possible so it would shrink itself on smaller screens (based on assumption shrinking an image is always better than magnifying it)?

I'm doing something like the following:Bitmap mBitmap;mBitmap = BitmapFactory.decodeResource(getResources(), R.drawable.myimage);In onDraw I'm doing this:canvas.drawBitmap(mBitmap,0,0,null);My Manifest looks like this:<supports-screens android:smallScreens="false" android:normalScreens="true" android:largeScreens="true" android:anyDensity="false" /On Larger screens, my images shrink down to about a quarter the size of the large screen and sit in the upper left hand corner. For the life of me, I cannot figure out how to get my images and screen coordinates to automatically adjust to the larger screens.

This was reported in the other thread about X8 Issues, but thought to start a new one to gather feedback from users. It's about the ''black screen'' freezing issue encountered by some users. I have had this several times since owning the phone for a few weeks, so it is a recurring issue. Problem: The phone hangs or appears to be shut down or become unresponsive suddenly. Pressing the hardware buttons doesn't help as the phone doesn't react at all. Solution: Take out cover and battery and restart.Observations: From my own observations, it's not actually a shutdown but a major freezing/hanging. Sometimes when it happens, I can still see vague shades of the display at an angle. After leaving the phone for a while in the pocket, the phone comes back to normal again. Not sure if this is true for all users with this problem. Anyway, gathering more feedback to see how prevalent the problem is, to evaluate whether I should take it to the SE service centre, or whether doing so will help at all.

1) After I make a call, the screen goes black in a matter of seconds. I'm typically using a headset when I notice this. To end the call (or enter numbers in a call menu) I need to press the sleep button to get the screen to light up again. This is a pain in the a$$.I have the screen timeout set for 2 mins.
2) About once or twice a day the home screen will lock where I can't press anything. I need to reboot to fix.

There is an activity which fetches xml data from the network, parses it and displays it in the UI. When the user clicks on any of the link or button on the screen I call startActivity with new Intent object of the same activity. I do this to have the activity on the history stack. Previously I just called setContentView of the activity without starting the activity again, but with this I cannot have the previous page in the history stack. Now the problem is - each screen normally takes up to 20 seconds to fetch content, parse and display. when the startActivity is called the screen becomes black until the next UI is rendered. I wanted to keep the previous screen showing until the next page loads. Please tell me 1. Is there a way to do this? 2. Is it good to start the activity again for each page. If not how to have the previous page in the history stack so that I can use the Android's back button.

I have a listview that when you click on an item it will take you to a WebView that displays some static formatted text associated with that list entry.
I had it all working with a TextView but I wanted to be able to use HTML formatting for the text and figured the WebView was the way to go. Right now it is just supposed to display a generic link for testing purposes but when the viewContent intent starts it just goes to a black screen. I can go back and pick another entry and it also just shows the black screen.
I'm not sure what code you are going to want to see so here's the viewSection class file and the viewsection.xml layout.
viewSection.java:
CODE:..............
viewsection.xml:
CODE:..................
