Sep 10, 2010
I want to build a data structure in my application to store many entries indexed by keys. Each entry has several parameters to retrieve and update.

I have some reference data in a text file (~5MB) that I want to use with might android application.The file is of the format:
1|a|This is line 1a
1|b|This is line 1b
2|a|This is line 2a
2|b|This is line 2b
2|c|This is line 2c
What I want to know is the most efficient way (less memory, fast, size etc.) to use this file within my application.
a.) Should I save the file as a raw resource and open and read the whole file whenever I need a certain line.
b.) Should I convert the file to XML and use XPath to query the file when ever I need to look up a value
<!--sample XML -->
<data>
<line number="1">
<entry name="a">This is line 1 a</entry>
</line>
</data>
c.) Should I just copy & paste the whole file as a static string array in the application and use that.
[EDIT] I will also need to search this file and jump to arbitrary keywords e.g. "line 1a".

I have created a class with 3 sub classes in Java. The 3 sub classes contain variables to store information from my XML document. I am able to store in the first two for there are only single instances of the data in the XML. The third class contains variables that repeat multiple times. I want to store an object of "third class" objects. I also have a SAX parser class. I am doing this within an Android environment (1.6).
Does this make enough sense without displaying any code?

In my application, I am going to create a few listviews that are dependent on the listview before it. For example,Then, depending on user choice, will go next screen, let's say, it contains a submenu of each type of school,that may be different or may be the same to other states.What I want to know, is how to populate these different lists dynamically as the user goes on? I don't know what the best of doing this is, and I seem to be looking in the all the wrong places because I keep getting stuck. Once all the data is added into whatever structure is used, it will be static. I basically just need help as to how to code information into some sort of hashtable or anything of the sort that can be easily referenced, and later when the Application is updated, be able to add more schools/states/submenus etc.

I'm making an Android Java app game (although this question applies to all languages really) and hope to release the first version soon. I'm nervous about how I save data in my game. My problem is that, if in a later update, I decide to store more data or store the same data in a different way, I need to be careful I don't lose or corrupt data for users that upgrade (i.e. I want users to be able to use data created by an old version in the new version, like their high scores from before).For example, say I want to save high scores in version 1.

My application requires that when a snapshot is taken it must store in memory and next time when I restart the phone I must get a thumbnail of that photo in list of photos and the full scale photo when I click on it.There are 2 ways I know.
1. Store images directly. Concern here is every time it has to hit directory to get image which takes some time.
2. Store all images in single xml. Concern here is XML will be too big and takes time to parse.

For my CS bachelors I am doing a Senior project using android and google maps.My vision was to do a (relatively) simple Dijkstra shortest path using google maps road data. I was going to add elevation change along with 2D distance. I am doing well playing with maps in android but I am completely stumped trying to access google maps data in any sort of searchable form.How would I go about accessing the data for say intersections of roads (lat/long) in a particular area?There has to be a way to pull that data in some sort of tree form. It seems like it may be possible with kml?Any pointers would be awesome.I want my paths to follow roads but If i cant this is going to turn into an orienteering application fairly fast.

I'm developing an Android and web application that will function as a service (use the same data). My question is how should the data be stored to allow for both the web and the android application to have access to the same set of data? Should the android application connect to the sites MySQL server to store/access data? If so how do I allow someone to access the data when they are not in a service area?

I'm pretty new to java programming and am looking to do basic data mappings.What I want to happen is when you click an item it goes to it's subcategory.I'm not worried about switching the data when an item is clicked. I'm just not sure how to create the data set in an efficient way using Android.Eventually this will be driven by a database but I want to figure out how to use mock-data to get this working first.I'd like to be able to access it like myData['category2'] or myData['category2']['subcategory3']Should I create this in xml files and link them up or is it best to create a new class structure for it?

I am new to developing for android. I have a question regarding some best practices. My app is like a dashboard from which multiple different "sub-activities" can be started and done. I am wondering what is the best way to structure the app. One way is to have different layouts and load and unload them appropriately. The other is to start new activities using intents. At least this is what I have gathered from what I have read.

Is it possible to store user defined objects in a SQLite database from Android? For example: I am creating one class and I want to store that class object in the database. Is it possible? If it is, how to proceed? On the Blackberry platform, I am able to store objects directly in persistent objects. Is it possible to do this with SQLite and Android?

I'm designing a custom view which is an X/Y Plot. It's a moving graph that scrolls to the left with time and new Y values are continuously coming in at 10 per second.
I've been able to make it work with an array of integers where the array index is the X value and the integer value is the Y value, but this seems horribly inefficient (Because every time it comes time to re-paint, I have to loop 800+ times to paint the graph). Then we do it all again 10 times a second. yuck.
Can anybody think of a paintable object that I can draw points to and perform some kind of scroll transformation and then just draw the new points each time, rather than the whole canvas?
Any other ideas out there?

Does anybody know what data structures are used to the store messages in an SMS client app, and whether there is an existing API for this.I was perhaps looking at implementing a link list for the purpose but if the work has already been done in an API then perhaps it would be unnecessary to commit time to the task that could be spent programming other parts.

Something like, an object of a student, I want to display the student's name only, the student id and the student dob is not required.

I am currently sending and receiving SIP messages across a network. When I want to add SDP data to a SIP message I use the SessionDescription object in jrtp. This object is then added to the SIP message. But when I get a SIP message from the server its SDP is in a byte[] array. So I'm wondering is there anyway to convert the byte[] back into a SessionDescription object so I can use the SessionDescription object's methods to parse the data?

When I start my application I prompt the user for the password and use it to instantiate my data adapter object that I will need throughout the application. So I store it in Application object. My activity A prompts user for pwd, instantiates data adapter, sticks it to Application object and later starts activity B which in turn starts the built int gallery activity. When fooling around with gallery and capturing pictures for some time coming back to activity B I discover that Application.myDataAdapter is null. I found out that during me playing with camera the Application.onTerminate() method was called. So it seems like Android killed my process and when B was supposed to become visible it started a process again jumping directly to activity B bypassing A? Is that how it works? Should I then never assume that Application.myField will survive? and init it not only when A is started but whenever I discover it is null?

70.22212, -20 33253
70.25222, -20 33463
70.26232, -20 33573
70.27242, -20 33683
Now I store this information in this array List<GeoPoint> race = new ArrayList<GeoPoint>(); Where to save information for every race in Android (Database, internal XML)?

I'm writing an application that needs to store some small jpeg or pngs. Looking at the documentation i have seen that databases are stored under /data/data/package_name/databases I decided to store my data under /data/data/package_name/files. With the emulator i can see all these files (databases and images) under the proposed directories but moving the application on a real device and installing a file system browser i cannot see any file under /data. Can anyone explain me why? My application works perfectly on my mobile (HTC magic) so i think that data is downloaded and stored. If this is a security constraint,do i need to put the application under debug on the mobile in order to inspect file system?

For a particular activity - what is the best way to store data that needs to be displayed. The issue is that when the user changes orientation, you need to be able to re-render your activity which means you need to get back at that data that you use to render. I understand the MVC design pattern, but I guess I'm wondering where the M should be stored. Global variables? Static members of your activity? Serialized to private storage?
