Android :: Auto On / Off - No Email Alert
Oct 13, 2010
I was a longtime BB user and despite pressure to go iPhone decided that open source was for me. I'm not a tech and not particularly patient configuring new kit so am asking for some quick pointers to apps, etc. I have looked myself but maybe I'm being a klutz or maybe just looking in the wrong place. 1. Auto off/on. How do I get my Nexus One to switch off as per a configurable schedule? 2. I don't want an alert for email (using gmail) but I do want an alert for SMSs. Is there the equivalent of a profile app to adjust sounds for this? My Nexus One is either both on or both off. Neither do I want the trackball to blink for email arrival but this isn't so important. 3. Auto spell-check in multi language (English and Spanish). Does such an app exist? 4. In email/SMS make the first letter a CAP?

How could I best send a message using the Android from an external email address to the user's email address or SMS?
For example, when the phone senses acceleration, it sends a message from youdroppedme@gmail.com to the user's gmail account.
I would prefer to use the core API, if possible. I am also considering using a web server as a go between. What is the most elegant solution?

I've set up an email account on my mini pro (NOT gmail or exchange) and it all works fine updating my inbox manually , however, I cant find any settings to automatically retrieve my emails periodically ( as far I can see auto sync refers to gmail or sony sync or road sync for exchange). Is there any way to auto sync an individual email account ?

Does anyone else have the same problem? When I use the default email client from captivate, even when I set the checking period as every 10mins, I won't get new emails unless I open the app and manually refresh, well, except the one of gmail. This happens on my yahoo email, hotmail and my school email, which all worked fine on my old iphone. People have talked about yahoo mails won't be accessible through wifi from Android, which happens on mine too. But even when I was at 3G, the email client won't auto check it either. I have tried K9 email client, it doesn't work either. The only thing I find work is the MailDriod, but the function of this app is very limited, it won't even open attachments by default. Does anyone else here have the same problem, or maybe an idea to fix the default email client? Also, I find when I use the ear set make calls, when I try to click the button on the ear set, it won't hang up the call as my iphone would. Is this a bug or just something Andriod can't do? The button on the ear set seems quite useless with Captivate, it can only control to play or pause by single click when play music, won't do song change when doule click it.

I know it's a standing issue with the androids not receiving email notifications from the regular email app but is there an APP that will just notify me of email? Doesn't have to view it or anything just alert me as I am satisfied with the original email app. I've tried K-9 and it closes unexpectedly all the time and I find it unreliable with my phone (Samsung Galaxy S). I've also tried Maildroid which I wasn't too impressed with.

For historical reasons (from when I had a LG VX-6000 before I upgraded to a smart phone), I have several email notifications that are sent to my phone by way of <my number>@vtext.com. This is the Verizon email-to-SMS gateway that has been around forever.
The default 'Messaging' app is smart enough to extract the email address from these messages and look it up in my Contacts list, so it shows up as from the proper contact.
I have been looking for an app to alert me with a different tone depending on who sent me the message. I have tried 'Missed Call' and 'Ringo'. Both will let me assign an alert tone to a contact, but when one of these SMS messages is received, both 'Missed Call' and 'Ringo' show the message as from '6245' (which is 'MAIL' transposed with a telephone keypad). As a result, it won't look up the proper alert tone because it won't extract the sender's email address.
Is there a better solution? I could have these messages sent to my Gmail instead, but the Gmail app won't play different tones depending on the sender.

Getting an alert "The email is no longer available on the server." On personal POP account. Has been working fine but the last day or so this has been happening and I'm not receiving emails. I can send from it though. All settings are the same, no changes. Gmail is working fine.

Galaxy Note II.
Ever since i updated the software, two weeks ago, my phone keeps telling me that I have a new email (outlook) even though I don't! The phone vibrates as if I actually get a new email, but then it turns out that one of the already read emails suddenly is unread and "new". This happens every 10 minutes, so it's super frustrating. I am not using any specific app, just the one email-app that came with the phone.

Of course we all know we need to add a primary email into the Android to set it up.
But I noticed when I get a email it gets set to my Gmail app (preinstalled can't remove it) AND my email app so I get 2 notification for 1 email. Is there a way to prevent this from happening?

I keep my phone on vibrate most of the time and I've found that when I'm on the phone talking to someone and I get a new email, the phone vibrates so I can hear it, which is great. But the caller on the other end hears it too and they always end up saying 'WTF was that noise'? How to turn this off so callers don't hear the vibrate mode too?

I switched to a Droid X from a BlackBerry. On the BlackBerry, not only could you set phone and SMS custom alerts and ringtones (in addition to custom ring profiles for certain contacts), you could also set email alerts.
So for example, if my husband emailed me, it would ring a custom alert for his email, not just for an email to that particular account. That meant I didn't need to look at my phone every time got an email to see who it was from. (I have a web-based business and I get literally hundreds of emails every day.)
On the BlackBerry, not only were there custom inboxes for each email account, there was a "universal" inbox. There doesn't seem to be a function exactly like that for the Android (I tried adding my Gmail accounts to the one there, but it keeps defaulting me back to each Gmail box).
Is there an app for this?
I have Ringo Pro for my custom sms and call alerts, but an email alert would be a lifesaver. There are a lot of BB converts to Android (and I'm sure more to come) who would gladly pay for an app to handle this. So far, it's the only thing I can see where the Droid X doesn't beat the BB.

I am new to the whole android scene and just got my G1 and love it so far. Quick question though: I do not have a data plan therefore my emails are not constantly syncing and such. I was wondering if there is an application that would make my wifi turn on at a set time and for a set length of time in order to fetch and sync and then turn off. This would be very useful especially in the morning right before I wake up so that when I first pick up my G1 in the morning the new emails have been synced.

I have an Android app that I am working on that needs to get regular data updates. However, the only way that I will ever be able to receive the data is via csv files arriving as email attachments. I wish that I could use a web service or something else more reliable; however, this is the constraint that I am working with.
So, how can I build the functionality to monitor all incoming mail and if I receive a message with a specifically named attachment that has the expected MIME type, automatically save the attachment so that my app can process it?

My husband and i just got Droid X's. We have a business with a website and associated webmail. Our email address is an IMAP account created by our website developer. After trying to configure the embedded mail program, we installed K9 based on a lot of good reviews on this site. We've got it working, the only issue is we can't seem to get it to automatically notify us when a new email comes in as the phone does with Gmail. The notification doesn't come in at all - you have to go into K9 and "Get Mail". We have it set to sync all folders.

I was wondering how I can mimic the action that occurs on an auto linked email address via an intent. I tried using this method, Messaging and email intents in Android? And ran in on my phone and in my emulator and the message window opened but did not have the email address. And the composer window for the auto-link looks different than the composer for the following code. Here is the code from the link above so you don't have to click:
Intent emailIntent = new Intent(android.content.Intent.ACTION_SEND); emailIntent.putExtra(android.content.Intent.EXTRA_EMAIL, new String[] {"foo@bar.com"}); emailIntent.setType("text/plain"); startActivity(Intent.createChooser(emailIntent, "Send a mail ..."));

My girlfriend and I both have Eris's which we got back in March. Up until the 2.1 OTA update we both received our emails without fail. I have a Live, Hotmail, and Gmail account and she has a Live and an Exchange school account. Once we got the update we both started noticing that we weren't getting our emails on our phones. I found the manual sync button and since then we have both been just using that to receive our email, but it is getting on my nerves now as I have gotten important emails late on a few occasions. This problem happens no matter what network we are connected to, either 3g or my home WiFi. Has anyone found a fix for this other than using an app like K9? I have a lot of apps on my phone and don't really have room to spare, and I like the stock mail app so please don't suggest using another app.

I was excited to see that Google had updated the stock Email app to be more like the latest Gmail app so I installed it on my Nexus 7. I was almost shocked to see that they STILL haven't added the 'auto fit messages' option like Gmail has. How can Android be so far along and still not have this extremely basic option? I know a few 3rd party email clients support this, but it seems crazy to me that they didn't do this.

I installed CyanogenMod 11.0 for Samsung Express ATT (SGH-I437) last week without any issue and the ROM has been performing without any issues...until yesterday. I don't know what happened, but now 'auto sync' has been disabled for all my email accounts (Exchange and Gmail) and I have to manually sync my email. I know this is a first-world problem, but because the ROM seems relatively stripped-down, I can't find a means to turn-on auto sync again.
