Android :: Apps Seem To Run Randomly When Not Using Them / Is It Part Of Update Check?
Jun 6, 2010
I've noticed this before but haven't given it much thought, but I've noticed that it seems that certain apps are running in the background for no reason. I usually notice this by checking task killer. However, just now while using another app, I got a force-close error for ShopSavvy, which hasn't been used in several days.
Why would something like this run randomly in the background? Is it part of an update check? Any ideas?

The version of the software that is most current is version 6 (the phone shipped with version 3).
To ascertain version: Go to Dialer/Hit Star/#9999#
You will see the PDA; Phone; and Software Version numbers in this section
The T939xxxx6 for PDA AND PHONE and then
Software Version - ending in .006 on the last line.
I was told that the reason that I keep seeing the "No update file exists" message when I check "update firmware" is because I have the latest version.
At some point my phone was updated without giving me a message. I did notice the red and blue arrows yesterday. But there was no message. My SD card mounted and dismounted on its own and gave an error message, and then all references to the error and SD card disappeared.
If your phone is/has exhibited this sort of behavior, you may already have the update.

I'm running Android 2.2 on my Nexus One. Applications like Fring, Qik, Slot Machine, Amazon MP3, Shop Savvy, Battery Time Lite, and Settings Profiles Full are opening at random. I'm use the "kill all" widget from Advanced Task Manager every time I put away my phone, but they randomly open. I don't use my phone too much throughout the day, but my battery is close to 50% by the end of the day. It is not a battery problem, however this is my second battery. (I got my first one replaced) My phone is not rooted.

I want to show an update message for a new release - the first time the user opens the updated version of my app, a pop-up dialog should appear, saying what's new, with an OK button. After the user has read it once, it shouldn't appear again.
Is there any inbuilt Android variable I can check to see whether the user has opened the app before?
Of course, I can define my own boolean in the app settings ("hasUserSeenUpdateMessage") to check each time the app runs - setting it to false initially, and then true when the user clicks OK.

Why is it when I click the check for update it tells me no firmware? Also since I did the one update my phone tells me lots of time that a new update was installed and phone is ready for use. Do I have to find the update somewhere and run or install it manually?

I have a DX running the 2.2 OTA. I rooted my phone but did nothing else (no deodex, no custom anything.) I did rename some of the default apps to disable them but backed up before. Now, here is my question. I want to check for updates (I know where are none, but I keep hoping there will be to fix all the little bugs Froyo seems to have) and I get a "Check for update was not available at this time." I get this EVERY TIME.
Could this be a problem from rooting? Is anyone else having this issue? And yes, I did disable the wifi only updating in settings, so it isn't that.

Hey everyone, I'm sort of new to this but I figured I'd give it a shot to see if anyone might have an answer.
This happens fairly frequently actually, but I'll be in an app (any app - it's not really particular) and sometimes it'll just randomly shut me out of it and return to the home screen. As it does this, the home button blinks and vibrates incessantly until I hold down on it - at which point it brings up a sort of mini-list of six apps (the last six apps I've opened, I suppose). Once I clear out of that list, then the phone resumes working normally.
I initially thought it had something to do with the memory and running too many apps at once, so I downloaded Advance Task Killer and run that occasionally...only to find the same problem occurring, sometimes RIGHT after I kill all the apps.
Has anyone else had this happen? Can anyone help me out?

I don't even use google play music, but whenver I start my device or restart it, I get annoying pop up errors telling me "unfortunately google play music has stopped working", I have never even started Google play music and it's not in my active applications. If I do open it, it always freezes and crashes. My phone is unrooted so I can't do anything about it, and the errors keep popping up randomly.

In Settings > About Phone > System Updates, it says "Android Update 1.5" at the top, and when I click download everything seems to go smooth, and it says "Requires a restart". So I power my phone down, power it back up, and go to System Updates, and it still says I need "Android Update 1.5". Is there a way to check if the update actually happened, or what should I do?

I got a notification today about the Froyo update being available (yay!) but was in the middle of something so hit cancel, thinking I could get it later. But I can't work out how to!
It did say that the phone would check again at the next scheduled time so I can download it then if need be - but does anyone know how to make the phone check before then?

I went into Weather Bug (free version) to check the weather and accidentally hit the menu button. Decide to check preferences for the heck of it and I see "Enable Updates' set to yes and Update Interval set to every 1 hour. What?? I know it's probably not a huge drain - but I had no idea that it was checking on a regular basis (and why I don't know). So please check your apps to make sure they are not updating data auotmatically! After that I went into every app I had to make sure I was either signed out or or set updates to manual.

This morning I power cycled my Eris for for first time in a week or so. After that, the notificaton area said I have four updates waiting.I think I selected the "My Tracks" app for update, but when I did, it told me to make sure I had at least 40% battery charge, the phone would be unusable during the update, etc., and it proceeded to install the OTA update to build 1.17.605.1.That's fine, but now the phone doesn't show any apps with available updates. Will these apps automatically notify me again that updates are available? Do all apps routinely check?

Sometimes (it's not usual, but sometimes it happens) my phone (Nexus one, CM7) runs quite slowly, and not fluent at all, just because of an app that is eating all the memory / processor. If I kill that app, problem solved.
When this happened the first time, I went to the running services section in settings, and I checked that the services listed are not ALL the running processes, so even if I kill all the services there, there are still running apps. Then, I tried to install several app killers, just to check if they kill all the running apps, but not only they don't list all the running apps, but also when killing all, there are still apps that keep running (like some games), and the only way I found to find them is checking one by one in the apps list, if they are running or not.
Is there any app to check at once ALL the running apps? I have looked for it, but all I have found are apps to do exercise ("running apps", D'oh!), and stuff like that?

Just got my D2 yesterday after spending way too long with the Eris... so far I'm loving it, but I have one question: do everyone's phones seem to randomly open 10-20 apps in background at all times? These aren't even apps I use, like a Sudoku game I haven't tried once yet. I'm not too worried about it, since performance seems to be fine, but I'm wondering if this will affect battery life.

I went into the notification bar to see I had two updates for apps that I have. However only a second or two after the notification window was up it suddenly disappeared and kicked me back to my home screen. When I returned to the notification window the app update notifications were no longer there. Is there a way that I can make my Droid go check for updates again?
