Android :: App That Turns Off Texting While I'm Driving
Jun 14, 2010
Looked around and saw some real expensive alternatives, but not really what I'm looking for anyway.
I just want something where I can drive using the phone's GPS, and not have it interrupted by any texts during the trip. Then, after I'm done driving, have the texts arrive on the phone.
I did a few searches and couldn't really find what I was looking for.

Is there an app that sets your phone for handsfree or speaker mode ready when your driving.Or maybe a profile to set the phone to answer in speaker mode when your driving.

In my application I want to show route between two points and display points (something like POI's from my own source) the user will be riding through.
How can I get the directions (polyline) from GoogleMaps? Application will not provide any navigation so I suppose that there are no "leagal obstacles" for doing this (correct me please if I'm wrong).

I know, you can make short cuts, but they are a real pain (and unsafe) to use while driving. It would be great to long press on any number in the dialer and dial a selected number. By the way, I'm sure you've noticed if you select a number on the dialer, then press # a contact number on your SIM card appears. Not sure what the hell they were thinking of with that one...

I am developing maps application which has to support driving directions and route search and creation. But there is no API support in Android for this.
So i want to use google map APIs instead of Android APIs, Are there any APIs available for driving directions in google. If yes, What are those APIs, How can i use those APIs with Http request/response.
I read some where that earlier googlenav package was there in Android SDK, but it is now removed. May I know the reason for removal of this package, or When can i expect it to come back with fixed version of googlenav in Android? Looking forward to your reply.

When driving I have the phone on the dashboard but do not feel comfortable pressing a button or dragging the menu down to answer a call. I don't have a hands free kit or bluetooth headset and wondered if there is a way of answering by voice and then speaking over the loudspeaker?

I'm wondering if there's an app out there that can track traffic patterns/route times. I know that those Runners apps. can track speed/time to destination, but I'm interested in being able to track which highways/roads have the most/least amounts of traffic on which days and at which times, or which roads cause you to wait the longest at certain lights, so that I can know in advance (the app. would alert me which route to take on which day according to data collected over time). I've always been kind of fascinated by traffic patterns, but I'm also a fairly focused driver, so I don't generally look at times it has taken me on different days. You can feel like taking a back way one day, but does it really save you any time with all the lights you hit instead?

I went through all the settings and could not find a way to configure the phone to speak the SMS, the caller id, etc....when I am driving.
On my other phone, a samsung galaxy s3 from verizon with android 4.3, there is a "driving mode". I thought it was a true android capability, but could it be a samsung feature instead ?In any case how do I get the Nexus 5 with Android 4.4 to do the same ? can I get it to do it using an NFC tag...

My name is Daniel Feldman and I am with the product group of an exciting new startup called Waze.
Waze is aiming to create the first user generated live driving map through the use of Smartphones. Our goal is to empower drivers to create, share and use real-time information (such as Traffic updates or road accidents) straight from their Smartphones. This has been both very popular and efficient in Israel, where we first began.
Waze is currently seeking 100 alpha users in the Bay Area who'll be the first users to participate in building this exciting project. In addition, if you have any other ideas, tips or suggestions, we would love to hear from you.

When I first had my desire the contacts seemed to back up to googlemail fine, something has happened (dont know what) and my contacts on googlemail have reduced to 42 (was 127) I am trying get all my contacts from phone backed up to googlemail (or just my PC) dont mind which one. Would be happy to have them on my PC somewhere. I am imp/exp to SD etc etc but it keeps asking me for a vCard, which I do but where is that vCard stored, and how do I get my contacts to my PC either via the Vcard or via sync - I have tried syncing but the numbers stay the same? Surely it should be easier than this - all I want to do is get my numbers backed up for saftey.

There's a route I take to my sisters place that is different than the Droid would have me drive. I swear I read or a friend told me there is a "save route" feature that once you finish driving your way, you can select which will help force it to take you that way in the future.
I can't find this, if it exists. No other GPS I've owned have had this feature, and I've often lamented, "wouldn't it be nice if it *knew* I wanted to take this road over that one." Only asking 'cause someone once told me this might be a feature. Am I way off or am I blind to finding it?

1) Is there a way to save addresses or driving directions? Like if I know i'm going on a trip tomorrow and want to prepare for the trip, can i put in the addresses and get directions, then save? Also, can I save my HOME address? So whenever I'm anywhere, just say "home" and it route my destination?

When I load Google Maps and it first locates me, it centers the map on my location. Once I am travelling, the map does not follow my location. My location dot will go right off the map and I have to manually drag the map to see the next section I am now driving on.
Is there a setting to make Google Maps follow my position while driving?

Facebook syncing to contacts was working great until tonight and it is driving me insane.I have two of the same facebook accounts synced.I'm sorry if this is confusing but basically, in Settings>>Accounts and sync: I have two facebook accounts synced but they are the same account. However, I do notice that the two icons are ever so slightly different.I am wondering if this is somehow syncing my facebook account through the app as well as through android. The reason why this is driving me nuts is because the accounts link to the contacts and for several contacts I have two facebook profiles synced, in addition to the phone contact, and gmail contact. This is really bugging the OCD-ness in me. Also when I search a contact to call or text for example, it might show one of their home numbers as "mobile" since it doesn't really know what type of number their facebook number(s) are. This problem started today when I shared my first picture through my phone onto facebook. I found it weird that it asked me to sign in again since I thought I had already done so through the app 'm sorry for such a long post, but I am wondering what I should do.Does this mean I should get rid of the facebook app?

How do I use Google Maps app to calculate the driving time and distance from Chicago to Los Angeles? *ONLY* Chicago to Los Angeles.... not NYC-Chicago-LA
I can do this very easily using my Macbook Pro by firing up Google Maps in Chrome browser.(or any browser)
However, I just can't figure out how to do this using the Google Maps app on my Samsung Galaxy Note 3. Sure, I can use use a browser to do this, but I want to do it inside the Google Maps app for Android.

I recently bought a HTC Desire which I've become exceedingly fond of.I've read (and been told by a colleague who owns a HTC Legend) that wifi should automatically turn off while the screen is off to conserve battery. I have the impression that I should be able to see the wifi icon turn on as I turn on the screen and unlock the phone. However, I haven't noticed that happening: The icon seems to just be on always.I have then tried observing my router's DHCP table when the the screen is off, but I haven't observed the entry for my phone disappearing (and I don't really know how much time has to pass before the table not showing my phone. Are there any settings that can cause this behaviour? What about programs? I current use smart monitor to log data usage as well as locale (using a SSID plugin and not the locale "location" condition). The only services I can see apart from those I think are OS services, are the ones for locale, smart monitor lite and the SSID plugin.

Currently it seems that locking the screen automatically turns off the accelerometer. I looked around for quite a while and didnt find any solution for that. Is that intentional? It would be really helpful to know if this is how it is or if I just didnt find the solution for that so far.thank you for any help on that (and as I said, even "doesnt work right now/on purpose/.

As I understand it, there seems to have been a change in the OS that prevents the accelerometer from running when the screen turns off and the phone CPU goes into its power saving state. Can this be confirmed?I have gotten around this by using a wake lock, but this is a much less than ideal solution as it drains a lot of battery. If the accelerometer was disabled in low power mode to save the battery, it may very well have the opposite effect in many cases, such as mine.A partial wake lock seems to be required to keep it running, which is obviously much worse than if just the accelerometer were running without the need for the wake lock. Are there any other workarounds anyone knows of to getting accelerometer values while the phone is in low power mode? Also, are there any plans to change this in future versions of the OS?If there are no plans to change this, I would definitely like to petition for this to be changed.

Is there an app that turns on the screen when an SMS is recieved? I have found one called SMSAwake, and its great and simple, but only turns the screen on for 5 seconds. If there was one out there with which you could customize the duration of the screen turning on, that would be great (perhaps 7-8 seconds?)

I'm trying to draw some points (around 200) in a MapOverlay and noticed that the application gets slow and the phone becomes unresponsive. After adding the Log.i message I found the problem, the loop is run endlessly (note that the phone is quiet and there's nothing happening in the background): Is this a "normal" behaviour, a bug in the OS or am I doing something wrong? Here's my code...

I see where Dolphin is highly recommended, but after doing some playing around I noticed something pretty strange. I like to listed to music streaming and the stock browser seems to allow Flash play audio, but the Dolphin browser can not recognize it. The problem with listening with the stock browser is that when the phone goes into standby mode, it stops playing. Does anyone know how to keep it playing when the screen turns off?
