Android :: Any Way To Use XML Layout Files For Specific View?
Jul 30, 2010
I have a custom View that I'd like to specify the layout of in an XML file rather than through code, is there anyway I can take an Android XML layout file and use it to flush out my custom View's content? I know it can be done in an Activity via the setContentView method, but there doesn't seem to be a similar method for Views.

I want to dynamically add some views to a LinearLayout that is already defined in XML.
I'm able to add views to the screen but they are not being placed 'inside' the right LinearLayout.
How can I get a reference to this specific Layout from code, similar to getting a View by using findViewById()?

My searches all bring back ways to transfer files using my Windows Explorer on my PC Interface via USB and on Android "Es file explorer" using wifi.
I use ES file Explorer to view shared folders on my PC via wifi. I want to do the same thing only faster through USB. Similar to how you connect the android to your pc and it shows the internal sd and external sd in windows explorer.
For example... I want to browse my vast collection of "Justin Bieber's Monkey confiscated by German customs for excessive spanking" pics on my pc to find one that looks good as my android wallpaper. I dont want to use wifi and cant load the 74GB of pics from my pc on my 8 GB SD card on my Android to go through them.

While developing for Android, I am unable to open more than one main.xml file in an Eclipse editor at a time.Each time I open one, it simply replaces the editor (tab) of the first main.xml with the new one, instead of opening a new tab - even if the contents of the existing tab were unsaved.Even stranger, I can open multiple main.xml files from different projects with no problems.This only happens when they're within the same project.

Is it possible to build a GridView object in XML with 3 columns and 4 rows of Image buttons? It doesn't seem to have similar containment relationship like LinearLayout or RelativeLayout viewgroups.
I want to do this entirely in an xml layout file. When I put ImageButton xml tags inside a GridView xml body, The layout panel in eclipse is throwing an exception: UnsupportedOperationException:addView(View, LayoutParams) is not supported in AdapterView.

I am using eclipse 3.5 with the ADT plugin.when I view layout xml files, i get two tabs in the view the source code view and a graphical view.the graphical view almost never works for any of my layouts.it usually shows "NullPointerException: null" at the top and nothing else. when it does work, it often does not match what i get in the simulator or device.it seems like this thing simply is not ready for prime time; although the idea is very cool.has anyone else had much success with it?

I want to build my own custom view which should look like the Crysis-GUI.At first I designed a XML-based Layout and made it visible via the setContentView(int resid)-Method. Worked pretty well.But now I wan't to go a step further and draw in my Layout. So I created a new Class, let it extend View and overrode the onDraw()-Method. So far so good.But how can I still use my XML-Layout? I can't do setContentView anymore, so how could the same effect be achieved?

So my layout looks basically like this:
<ScrollView>
<RelativeLayout>
<BunchOfViews/>
<ImageView android:layout_alignParentBottom="true"/>
</RelativeLayout>
</ScrollView>
I have the ScrollView so all of the layout always is visible no matter the height of the screen. The problem is that on a very high screen, I still want my imageview to be at the bottom. However, a child of a ScrollView dont seem to have a defined bottom. The View is placed at the top of the layout. How can I solve this problem in a neat way?

I have an XML layout with some custom tabs, a heading, and a ProgressBar(main.xml). I wish to add another XML layout(home.xml) to the main.xml layout, as i wish to keep main.xml re-usable for other activity's layouts and simply add things to it as necessary.The problem: after inflating R.layout.home into rootLayout, it seems as though the ProgressBar contained in rootLayout is hidden underneath the content of home.xml.Is there a way to tell certain views(via XML) to float above other views when the layout is constructed in this way?if not, am i forced to use methods such as progressBar.bringToFront() to raise targeted views to the top?what alternatives do i have in z-ordering views when some layouts are constructed using inflation?

I have A game to which I recently added a global high score functionality which made a lot of people upset so I want to add the option of disabling it.
What I did was this: in my settings activity view, I added the following code...
What I want to do is to disable the entire "High score specific settings" layout when the user unchecks the enable high score tracking check box.
I tried disabling it by setting the setEnabled to false, but that didnt work at all...
Should I be using a viewgroup or something?
Is there a refresh method I should run to apply the change?

I've tried to add a TextView before a ListView in a LinearLayout. The result is that the ListView wont show at all. The same thing happens if I put the TextView after the ListView, but then I will only see the ListView. Is there a way to get a text view above the ListView without to much of a hassle?

I have a layout which contains a TextView.
The content of the TextView might change on runtime. (discussed on a different issue here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3683727/layout-with-dynamic-position )
I can position the layout by drag&drop. If the size of the layout doesn't change, the position stays, but as soon as the size of the layout changes (because more text inside the TextView) the position is reseted.
I use the layout(left, top, right, bottom) to position the layout.
Now I don't know where I should add my layout() call to make sure it stays at the right position...
Here is my class
CODE:............

I am using a flipper in my main xml file to view multiple layouts in my app. For instance, if something = 1, the user is shown one version of the flipper, where if something = 2 the user sees a different version. Is there a way I can view the layout of the xml file for the other flippers I have rather than the main one? Ie, is there a way to switch views of each state of the flipper in eclipse?

I'm looking for a simple method to search a ViewGroup for a specific view given the id. This ViewGroup could have nested ViewGroups as well, so it needs to be recursive. Anyone know if Android as some type of view iterator? I can't seem to find anything.

I have 50 XML files located on a remote server, one formatted for each state. I am able to read each of the 50 files by selecting a state from a spinner and using a SAX parser but I cannot seem to find out how to pull out information from each file by city. I have tried unsuccessfully to pass a city variable to the characters method of the Handler.
Each state has thousands of records and I am looking for a way to speed up the search since reading the entire file for a state takes several minutes. I used SAX since it was supposed to be the fastest way to read but it limits me in selecting specific information. If I understand things correctly I could use a DOM parser to find my state and city specific data but that would make retrieval even slower.

Here's my scenario, I have about 6 layouts that all have a TextView with the ID "title". I'm theming my app right now and I'd like to have it so that every instance of title gets a specific style applied. Is this possible? I don't want to use a default text style because normal text will have a different size, etc.

I want to re-use 1 adapter (similar to well known ImageAdapter from samples) with 2 different views - Gallery and GridView. I need to specify LayoutParams for the each View returned by getView() method of my adapter. In case of Gallery it should be instance of Gallery.LayoutParams, and in case of GridView it should be GridView.LayoutParams. I'll get an exception for sure if I'll try Gallery.LayoutParams with GridView and vice versa.What is the best way to do that? Can I somehow use "parent" parameter (ViewGroup parent) for that?

I am trying to do is to embed a custom view in the default layout main.xml:
CODE:......
As you can see the class is called com.lam.customview.CustomDisplayView, with the id of custom_display_view1. now in the com.lam.customview.CustomDisplayView class, i want to use another layout called custom_display_view.xml because i don't want to programmatically create controls/widgets.
Custom_display_view.xml is just a button and an image, the content of which i want to change based on certain conditions:
CODE:..............
I tried to do:
1)
CODE:........
But got this error, "03-08 20:33:15.711: ERROR/onCreate(10879): Binary XML file line #8: Error inflating class java.lang.reflect.Constructor ".
2)
CODE:..........
But got this error, "03-08 20:28:47.401: ERROR/CustomDisplayView(10806): Resource ID #0x7f050002 type #0x12 is not valid "
Also, if i do it this way, as someone has suggested, it's not clear to me how the custom_display_view.xml is associated with the custom view class.
