Android :: Absolutely Position Elements Outside An Activity On Droid?
Apr 7, 2010
Is there a way to absolutely position an UI element on Android so that it is located outside an Activity? For example: can you create a fullscreen ImageView simply by moving/resizing an ImageView inside an existing regular Activity instead of creating a new fullscreen activity?

I have an android activity, with two elements:
EditText
ListView
When my activity starts, the EditText immediately has input focus (flashing cursor). I don't want any control to have input focus at startup. Stop EditText from gaining focus at Activity startup? I tried:
EditText.setSelected(false);
No luck. How can I convince the EditText to not select itself when the Activity starts?

Does anyone else have absolutely terrible coverage all the time? About 90% of the time I have one or no bars of service. And my 3g connection is always awful. I'm starting to think its just the Eris because I've had other phones with Verizon and have had very good coverage with them.

I'm trying to get the scroll position on a ListActivity. Here is what I'm trying to do: I have a list activity that is populated from an XML file. Another thread downloads all pictures so the user can see the list while the thread is still downloading the files.
What I'm trying to do is when the thread finishes getting all pics it reads the listview scroll position, refresh the listview and scroll to that position again.
ListView main = getListView(); <-- not sure if I'm really getting the ListView this way. int scY = main.getScrollY(); Log.d("Scroll", scY + " "); <--- this is printing zero even when at the moment I run this I already scrolled the list. setListAdapter(listadapter); main.scrollTo(0, scY);

I have an activity that comes up over another activity. I'd like to position the overlying activity at the bottom of the screen without using an absolute layout, just like the soft keyboard.
I can't figure out if this can be done in an XML layout, and if so, where does it go?
I have a theme created, and the manifest is set to use it (this works). But overlaying activity is always positioned in the center of the screen. This is what I have. code...
How do I get the layout to show up aligned to the bottom for the overlaying window?

Am I the only one with this problem?
When I listen to my voicemails (using the stock voicemail app) the sound quality is absolutely atrocious. I have to turn the volume all the way up and it is still very hard to hear and the overall quality is extremely bad.
I just find this so odd since the call quality during normal calls is perfectly fine.

On my htc i was looking through display, i see g sensor calibration and i perform this calibration and after i do so the screen seems to have a delay when switch from the horizontal position to the vertical position. its weird because when i switch to the phone horizontally it switch normally and responds fast. but when i switch back to vertically it takes almost 7 seconds to actually switch back, sometimes it switch within 2 or 3 secs but never as quick as switching horizontally.

If you're already updated, shut down and repower (soft reboot) should do the trick. I actually updated my phone and after it started to do this. I restarted the phone plenty of times i even took the battery out for 30 seconds. It only does it when im texting on the browser, basically everything but the camera. He camera screen rotation is perfect. I even rooted the phone but i havent figured out how to use the root to fix the problem. Should i do a firmware update? Because i just did the htc software update.

On my old phone (unlocked iPhone),I subscribed to news and weather updates via SMS from a local radio station. The shortcode is 411923.Then I got Nexus One (same T-Mobile service and SIM) and still receive the messages from them. Well, one day, there was a big news day (chile earthquake?) and I was getting annoyed by them, so I was gonna reply with "STOP" like you do with most short codes. The Nexus absolutely refuses to even attempt to send this number a text. It won't even try. It immediately shows the "message failed <!>" notification and sound.I can send to various other shortcodes, but this and a few others, the Nexus won't try.I am sure I could get another T-Mobile phone and swap SIMs to do it from that phone.I am just wondering what is the problem?

Take a simple XML file formatted like this code...
Each node has some attributes that actually hold the data of the file. I need a very quick way to count the number of each type of element, (List and Note). Lists is simply the root and doesn't matter.
I can do this with a simple string search or something similar, but I need to make this as fast as possible.
Design Parameters:
Must be in java (Android application).
Must AVOID allocating memory as much as possible.
Must return the total number of Note elements and the number of List elements in the file, regardless of location in file.
Number of Lists will typically be small (1-4), and number of notes can potentially be very large (upwards of 1000, typically 100) per file.

I have numerous activites in my Android app., and most should contain the same, relatively complex set of UI widgets on the screen's top area (lets say that its a kind of toolbar that you can find on most screens).
Right now, every screen's layout contains the markup for this toolbar, along with its logic inside every Activity's source, so it's damn redundant. Could you recommend a more efficient / less redunant way to do this?

I've got another question regarding to basic Android programming:
How can I access the GPS for getting the current Position of the mobile phone the app is running on? How long can this take to retrieve the information?
In this case the GPS might be disabled, how can I enable/disable it again.
Which permissions must be granted in the android manifest?

I was wondering if it is possible to start a ListActivity and in real time decide how far down the list it should be focused on. (Example: When the activity is started it checks for certain conditions and then it may scroll down to a row partially through the list.)

Is it possible to set the absolute position of a view in android? (I know that there is an AbsoluteLayout, but it's deprecated...)
Lets say I have a screen 240x320px, and I want to put an ImageView which is 20x20px with its center at the position (100,100).
What do I have to do?

I'm working on an application that displays the location of moving items on a Google MapView. I need a way to update the position of the icons that represent the items (as well as change the facing of the icons every two seconds as updated data comes in). I currently have an activity in the app that extends MapActivity. On to this I have overlaid a static Overlay that draws some lines on the map and an ItemizedOverlay that draws a static icon.

I am aware of setSelection(), setSelectionFromTop(), and setSelectionAfterHeaderView(), but none of them seems to do what I want.
Given an item in the list, I want to scroll so that it is in view. If the item is above the visible window of the list, I want to scroll until the item is the first visible item in the list; if the item is below the visible window, I want it to scroll up until it is the last visible item in the list. If the item is already visible, I don't want any scrolling to occur. How do I go about this?

But it seems only one TextView is changed. Is there a way to do this?Or I have to make different ids for every element, get every element by findViewById() method and set it's text?
