Android :: API For Shutdown / Hibernate Device?
Mar 25, 2010
I need an API which will shutdown/hibernate the device? This API needs to be called from the kernel driver. There is an API in pm.h device_power_down(PMSG_HIBERNATE); is this correct?

Can anyone please help me port the Hibernate feature that is in the new SkyRaider 3.3 ROM, and for the Desire. I am very interested in getting this feature on either RMK's new stock leak ROM or the 2.2 OTA stock ROM. Yes I know about the 3-1 reboot option along with hot boot. but im really interested in porting this over to a stock ROM for us. I wish I had the know how and was wondering if anyone would be kind enough to help me out with this.

I'm working on the upgrade process for an Android app and am having a hard time ensuring a graceful shutdown of the old version. Can someone explain how the old version of the app is killed and if there is anything we can do to hook into the process? In more detail:
We notice that a new version of our app is available and launch a new activity with Intent.ACTION_VIEW pointing to the new apk file (or to the marketplace, once our app is there). However, the user has 2 chances to abort the install (once at the warning about reinstalling the app, and the second when warned about the permissions our app needs). My understanding is that I can't use startActivityForResult() with ACTION_VIEW, so I can't find out if the Action is aborted or not. So we can't tell if/when the install has been started.
We'd like to ensure that our app shuts down cleanly since we use a lot of native code and threads. We could kill our app proactively, as soon as we launch the ACTION_VIEW activity, but then we're left in a bad state if the user aborts. We could wait for the installer to remove our files, prior to installing the new version, but that's a hack. Is there any clean way to do this? Our main window is never seeing an onDestroy(), btw.

Thanks to TasKiller I have reliable way to shutdown updates coming to my AppWidget from the AlarmManager! Now, sarcasm aside, how do I recover from such event? So far I only see that the Alerts are resurrected only after rebooting the phone. I can stick recovery code into few places such as various Activity#onCreate that belong to my app and my widget but is there a better way? Also what if the alerts are OK - is there a way to detect that and not run AlarmManager#setRepeating? Or is there a harm to run it multiple times?

I have a MK802 Android PC dongle on its way. It has no on/off switch so powers up when it is given juice and is shut down by pulling the cable. This is the same as pulling the battery and is a pretty violent way of doing it.
Is there an app available that does a gentle shutdown and allows Android to clean up before it goes? BTW, apparently the device comes already rooted.

How are you supposed to shut down the browser? On most applications you either have an exit button, or you need to back out of it, but with the browser, when you back ut, you have to back out through all the webpages you've been looking at with it. Or am I missing a close shortcut?

I've just plugged it in every night to charge the battery. Is there any need to shutdown and restart the Incredible on a regular basis like you would for a computer? Just wondering if this would clear caches, speed it up, etc.

im not sure why or what ive done but when i try and shut the phone down it just hangs at the "shutting down" screen for hours. it went 4 hours lastnight without shutting off. the only way to get it to stop is to pull the batt or it sometimes works to plug it into the computer with the usb cable. ive also noticed that mixzing wont read the sd card, keeps saying memory card is unavailible. could it be the same thing in both cases? the memory card is having issues? ive only had the phone for 2 weeks. i can save to and read from the card when mounted as a disc drive and i can shoot and save pics and videos as well as double twist reading from the card just fine. is there something im missing? this is driving me nuts im on telus, android 2.1, not rooted or modified in any way.

Does anybody know of a "patch" or indeed an ADB shell command that will enable me to disable the pointless (to me anyway) vibration on startup and shutdown. I am rooted with S-ON running stock Froyo with a "few little" mods applied such as rosie drag n drop and trackpad wake. Please don't suggest I install a full custom ROM as I dont want to do this just to get vibrate off. It seems like using a sledgehammer to crack a nut.
Surely if I can issue a command in ADB shell to disable startup sound (which I have successfully done) then there is a command to disable startup and shutdown vibrate??? Logically that must be the case? There must be somewhere in the startup/shutdown code that tells the phone to vibrate. I would be very, very, very, very grateful if anyone can point me towards a solution other than a full custom ROM install. For now I want to carry on running stock Froyo with my little tweaks. I am looking for a "tweak" such as a zip file or shell command.

I work in the IT department of a college and i am looking for an app that I can enter an ip address/host name and remotely shutdown/restart a computer. I know there are apps out there that do it but all I've come across are ones that require a program to be installed on the system ahead of time.
basically I am looking for an app that acts just like matcode's remote shutdown program.I've tried searching but but the results are too flooded with programs that require software to be setup ahead of time.I am rebooting windows 7 computers and have an atrix 4g phone

I was working on a paper on my computer, and my Droid was on my desk charging. My girlfriend sent me a message on the computer saying she will be over shortly, and I told her to call me in case I don't hear her knock. So a long time went by, and I was like "wow, she has to be here by now" and checked my phone to make sure I didn't miss her call. I hit the unlock button and nothing happened. I held the unlock button to turn the phone on, nothing happened. I had to physically remove the battery, then pop it back in and it worked magically. At the time, I thought that it was just a fluke.
I was writing messages, e-mails, browsing, etc., before class and I put my phone in my pocket right before I walked to class. When I got out of class, I tried to unlock my phone, and AGAIN the phone would not unlock/turn on. This time however, I made sure this wasn't a battery issue. I made sure all the pins on the phone were making contact with the battery and it would still not turn on. I had to pull the battery out, and put it back in, and it worked immediately. (I am literally pulling the battery out and popping it back in immediately, no wait time in between). I have seen a few threads about apps freezing, force quits, random restarts, and I have none of that (I have never had an app force close). I am just wondering if anyone has had a similar issue? I don't even know where to begin debugging, since I haven't really installed anything in the last week.

I own a ZTE v970m and I am running superdragonpt's [WIP] [JB 4.2.2] ZTE v970/v970m (MT6577) ROM. I was running bgcngm's ROM before I flashed this one.
With some ROMs I've flashed (including the current one) my phone somehow stops shutting down automatically when the battery reaches <1% (btw I still get the Low Battery warning at 15%), what happens is that, when it runs empty, suffers a hard shutdown (duh) and when I put it charging and I try to turn it on (even hours of charging later) I get a black screen (attachment) with a battery icon, some green bars and a hourglass. And a Bolt (no pun intended)
I really wanna stay with this ROM, so another 4.2 ROM for this phone.
Just remembered the red notification light switches on/off from time to time 30s-1m(maybe)

Today whilst surfing the net via wireless (only for a few mins) my Desire shutdown out of the blue and now constantly reboots - all it shows is the O2 Welcome screen before rebooting. Tried stopping this booting by holding down the power key and now it's stuck on the welcome screen! Any idea of what I can do? I've already removed the battery, sim and mini sd card and tried starting again but I still can't get past the o2 screen!

For the past couple weeks I've had the problem of the phone taking a long time to turn off. This started shortly after installing the 2.1 update. Tonight I turned the phone off and nearly ten minutes later I finally heard the shutdown sound. Sometimes it takes 3 minutes, sometimes later. I have found that if I don't hear the shutdown sound I can press the power button and the screen will come back on then it will shutdown.
Is anyone else having this problem? I'm not really sure what would be causing this problem because I've checked it before and haven't had any extra running services other than the keyboard and voice input services when it was turning off.

the spontaneous reboot and shutdowns is getting old quick. If they truly want to measure up to the IPhone, they best be patching this quickly. Or, Android will be like the I'm a PC / I'm a MAC commercials with Android being the less stable, flaky OS.

I've looked in Appbrain and all I see are apps for 1 touch or 2 touch reboot. What I'd like is to find an app that will shut my phone off. Period. Plain and simple. Anyone know of this? If not, will you make it for me? A friend of mine told me how easy app inventor is. When I get my google invitation, that will be my first app.

I have suffered the shutdown while charging and have traced it to a battery charge indicator app. I would charge the battery at night and the next morning it wouldn't restart without pulling the battery. This occurred concurrently with installing a battery charge indicator app. I uninstalled the app and now the problem has disappeared. My unabated installation of apps has now stopped. I am now convinced that the app world is full of bugs and crap. I bet half the problems that folks have are due to unvetted apps being used. I am now trying to figure out how to properly screen them before I install them and inherit a fatal bug in the process.

I mentioned this in another thread but thought it might garner more attention here. I keep seeing people indicate that this or that problem is fixed by a "battery pull." While I understand that a frozen/unresponsive phone must have its battery pulled in order to get it to reboot, I am failing to see what this accomplishes when your phone is functional. Is there something that a battery pull does that shutting down your phone does not do? I was trying to work it out in my head and couldn't come up with anything. Memory is cleared when you power it down. Cache is stored on the flash card, so that doesn't go away. Nothing stays powered up during the shutdown. So, help me out here. What does it do, that holding down the power button and selecting "Power Off" does not do?
