Motorola Droid :: Spontaneous Shutdown / Reboots Getting Old Quick
Nov 6, 2009
the spontaneous reboot and shutdowns is getting old quick. If they truly want to measure up to the IPhone, they best be patching this quickly. Or, Android will be like the I'm a PC / I'm a MAC commercials with Android being the less stable, flaky OS.

I've been having spontaneous reboots on my CLIQ, usually while on 3G. Was on wifi for about 1-2 weeks before I got my data plan and never had the reboots(but then again didn't have wifi 24/7), then I got my data plan and was just using the web (motoblur, news, websites) and the CLIQ would just spontaneously reboot once in a while, and the underside of the phone near the sdcard/SIM card area would get rather warm. Seems like it happens after some time of usage. If I ration the usage I don't see it happening as much.
When it reboots I see the screen fade out with horizontal lines that kinda look like patterns on old interlaced TVs. Then after that I get the motorola black/white logo after it reboots.

I have not had any real problems other than two times in the past two weeks (once with Skyraider and just now with stock 2.2). Both times happened while playing a Flash video.
Without warning, the phone goes straight to the "Droiiid" stage of booting. Screen does not go black, it just goes with ZERO delay fast to the splash screen. For Skyraider, the little droid dude showed within a microsecond of the Flash video playing.
Both times- Flash video and then the splash screen suddenly appears. With Skyraider, it happened with the previous version of Flash and with stock 2.2, it happened with the final Flash release.
added:
Kind of wild how fast it goes to the splash screen. It is SO fast, it seems like it is part of the video, until you notice it is the splash screen.

Today whilst surfing the net via wireless (only for a few mins) my Desire shutdown out of the blue and now constantly reboots - all it shows is the O2 Welcome screen before rebooting. Tried stopping this booting by holding down the power key and now it's stuck on the welcome screen! Any idea of what I can do? I've already removed the battery, sim and mini sd card and tried starting again but I still can't get past the o2 screen!

My Motorola Droid will occasionally make phone calls after I've turned the machine off. I've observed the machine to restart and make a call, usually to a number prior to the topmost number on the call log. Any help on this?

How are you supposed to shut down the browser? On most applications you either have an exit button, or you need to back out of it, but with the browser, when you back ut, you have to back out through all the webpages you've been looking at with it. Or am I missing a close shortcut?

I was working on a paper on my computer, and my Droid was on my desk charging. My girlfriend sent me a message on the computer saying she will be over shortly, and I told her to call me in case I don't hear her knock. So a long time went by, and I was like "wow, she has to be here by now" and checked my phone to make sure I didn't miss her call. I hit the unlock button and nothing happened. I held the unlock button to turn the phone on, nothing happened. I had to physically remove the battery, then pop it back in and it worked magically. At the time, I thought that it was just a fluke.
I was writing messages, e-mails, browsing, etc., before class and I put my phone in my pocket right before I walked to class. When I got out of class, I tried to unlock my phone, and AGAIN the phone would not unlock/turn on. This time however, I made sure this wasn't a battery issue. I made sure all the pins on the phone were making contact with the battery and it would still not turn on. I had to pull the battery out, and put it back in, and it worked immediately. (I am literally pulling the battery out and popping it back in immediately, no wait time in between). I have seen a few threads about apps freezing, force quits, random restarts, and I have none of that (I have never had an app force close). I am just wondering if anyone has had a similar issue? I don't even know where to begin debugging, since I haven't really installed anything in the last week.

For the past couple weeks I've had the problem of the phone taking a long time to turn off. This started shortly after installing the 2.1 update. Tonight I turned the phone off and nearly ten minutes later I finally heard the shutdown sound. Sometimes it takes 3 minutes, sometimes later. I have found that if I don't hear the shutdown sound I can press the power button and the screen will come back on then it will shutdown.
Is anyone else having this problem? I'm not really sure what would be causing this problem because I've checked it before and haven't had any extra running services other than the keyboard and voice input services when it was turning off.

I've looked in Appbrain and all I see are apps for 1 touch or 2 touch reboot. What I'd like is to find an app that will shut my phone off. Period. Plain and simple. Anyone know of this? If not, will you make it for me? A friend of mine told me how easy app inventor is. When I get my google invitation, that will be my first app.

I mentioned this in another thread but thought it might garner more attention here. I keep seeing people indicate that this or that problem is fixed by a "battery pull." While I understand that a frozen/unresponsive phone must have its battery pulled in order to get it to reboot, I am failing to see what this accomplishes when your phone is functional. Is there something that a battery pull does that shutting down your phone does not do? I was trying to work it out in my head and couldn't come up with anything. Memory is cleared when you power it down. Cache is stored on the flash card, so that doesn't go away. Nothing stays powered up during the shutdown. So, help me out here. What does it do, that holding down the power button and selecting "Power Off" does not do?

My Droid goes to sleep in the middle of my Youtube videos. Is there a way to stop it from shutting down/timing out without setting the Droids timeout to a longer time setting? I have it set for 1 min.

I am getting frustrated with all the re-boots on my Droid. They don't seem to be related to any running service, unless it is a background service. 98% of the time the phone reboots, it is "asleep" in my pocket. I will hear the notification chime, pull the phone out, and see the droid eye. suxxor, booted again! This happens about twice a day now. Before the 2.1 OTA it was about once a day. When the phone was new, it was about once every other day. Phone was rooted, but not rom'ed before OTA. I have not re-rooted after OTA. I have not wiped (ever), but am about ready to try. Recently added Helix as my home, but had the re-boots before helix.

Is it possible to run an app that monitors when your phone reboots? I've seen several people mention how various ROMs cause occasional/continual reboots for them, but I had never witnessed my phone rebooting on it's own... until today. Now I'm curious to know if my phone reboots when I'm not aware of it. I hate to think that the ROM I'm running is causing harm or problems for my phone that I'm not even aware of.

Using Chevy 7 slot LV 1250. I have flashed my fair share of ROMS the past few days, but after a 3 time total wipe (consecutive) and a nandroid restore from a few days ago when it was very stable. My only suspects are a re-downloaded FB app and Dialer One. I am thinking of doing the 0.9 update.zip for good measure.

I get random reboots occasionally. I do not think it is app related because it happens when my phone is in standby, I.E. in my pocket on table or even in Multimedia dock? Any suggestions anyone? One thing I think is suspect is Awakestay because It did not completely uninstall from my phone. Maybe it iscausing some kind of conflict. It was working fine and stopped working so I uninstalled when I went to reinstall it shows up as an installed app but it is not in my widget list and I do not have option to uninstall from market or app list.

I'm happier than a pig in poo with my Droid 2, the thing is amazing. However, my girlfriend's not so much. She got the deal from Wireless Amazon Beta, where she only paid 39.99.I wasn't able to, wasn't eligible for upgrade and got mine at the store.Anyhow, her phone a couple days in would freeze, the screen would go black, and then it reboots. Now it happens a couple times a day at least.Obviously seems like it's defective, but I'm wondering if anybody else is dealing with the same problem? If so, have you taken into Verizon. what have they told you or done for you?Wondering if she should send this back to Amazon Wireless, or head into a Verizon. And I'm wondering what kind of return/exchange/refurbishing headache were in for.

I was going to post this in the ApeX ROM thread, but I felt it was way too long and no one would read it. I would just like to add that I don't think this is a problem with the ROM, it's my phone. If you haven't tried ApeX yet, you should because it's awesome.
I'm getting a weird "soft reboot." That's the only way I can explain it. My phone freezes, and then reboots. The weird thing is that in the about phone it will have a continuous up-time. For example it would say up-time: 4h 36m when it froze and rebooted 5 minutes ago.
The other weird thing is that at 1.1Ghz, I can do a 20 minute stress test with zero problems. But a couple minutes later while unlocking my phone or texting it reboots.
It isn't just this ROM or just being overclocked either. I've always had this problem with 2.2. I turned off overclocking, and I've been going strong for about 10 minutes but I doubt it will last.
Did the stock voltages change between 2.1 and 2.2? Is it possible that my phone just sucks and can't handle the new voltages?

This is weird and took me a while to pinpoint exactly when this happens. When I am done using my phone I usually hit the home button to get to my home screen, regardless of what app or what screen I'm on. Then I press the power button at the top top turn off the screen. Almost everyday with what I thought was no clear pattern, my phone would reboot just after setting it down when I was done using it. I found that when pressing power too quickly after pressing home when the app hasn't fully gone away yet causes the phone to reboot. I have been able to consistently do this today from the gallery, not just at a specific picture but when viewing the list of my phone pictures. Over half a dozen times just now, every time, home then power and it reboots. I uninstalled OpenHome thinking it was related to the custom home app, but even with the default home it is still happening.Gallery is not the main problem, it has happened from other apps, but that one I have been able to most consistenly reproduce it because it takes longer for that to close before getting to the home screen (I only have 52 pictures, so I can't imagine that is the reason). I am about to go to a verizon store and see if I can reproduce it on the phones on display.

I go to download/install the downloaded rom's from the rom manager and every time it reboots it doesn't work. I've been trying to get BB 1.1 with smoked glass, And it'll download, But wont install?

With SetCPU? It does not save settings across reboots, so I have to go into it everytime and read just the sliders, even with "Set on boot" checked.

With 0.1 and 0.2 there is a weird problem. Aside from my phone rebooting under load (Navigation running, then taking a call) - the widgets are funked. I don't know what triggers it, but even with a simple reboot or nandroid back up my widgets don't load - just the black box marker. I have fixed permissions, the apps go to internal memory, IDK. Even after a fresh nandroid backup, when I restore it - previously working widgets don't show up (just the place holder). I can only pin this on the DropTheme that I have, but it worked fine with the initial (non BB) Froyo. I am going to try non-themed 0.2.1 - nandroid it - theme it - nandroid it and test both. If it's FUBAR, I am just going to have to go back to non modded Froyo or 2.1.

when i plug in the usb charger or connect it to my car dock. When i plug it in, the phone reboots and goes to the droid logo/droid eye screen and hangs there. I have to pull the battery to turn it off and back on again. Once it reboots it doesn't seem to have a problem connecting, but after that and a f ew hours of usage it happens again when i plug it back in. I installed a lot of apps using appbrain recently and i feel like it started doing that after i installed them.

Is there a way to get into recovery mode using quick boot? Or is there a program out there that will alow me to get into recovery mode. I liked quick boot because it allowed me to make a backup of the phone to an sd card. I am still not sure how to use titanium back up so if there is another program suggested that would be great.
