Android :: 200 Mb Of Data - Enough For Push Email?
Jun 18, 2010
I have had a BlackBerry Curve 8900 for about a year without data and just put on the $15 200Mb plan because it was cheap enough. I knew 200Mb was enough on the BB because their push email didn't require much background data usage. After seeing how horrible the BB did on working with my Gmail account, I have leaned towards getting an Android.
My question is: Is the $15 plan going to provide enough data for me to use the Android? These are the things I plan on using with an Android: GMail sync, college email sync, Google Calendar sync, Google Contacts sync, and everything else, such as surfing the web, through WiFi (which shouldn't affect data usage). I don't know how well Android works with WiFi but I know BB can restrict its browser to only WiFi.

I have a Milestone running Android 2.1
Initially, battery life was terrible, so bad I was considering returning the phone: with only K-9 email imap idle push email on in the background, and auto-sync off, I could get barely 7-8 hours of battery life, whereas with the Nokia e71 and Iphone 3gs I would get at least a day and a half, with comparable usage (push email, ca. 20 emails a day, 30 minutes of web browsing and 20 minutes of calls a day).
I then disabled background data, leaving the k-9 push email on, and now I get 2 days of battery life!
This is great, of course, but it also raises another question: what on Earth was going on in the background that was draining the battery? Thoughts?
Specifically, if you're interested in replicating my settings: I used 'any cut' to create a shortcut on the home screen to: settings -> account & sync. Once I untick 'background data', I can still use k-9 email, the browser, maps, etc, i.e. data-on-demand, if you will.
If I want to access the market, I enable backgr data again. If I want to sync contacts and calendar, I enable 'account sync' from the power control widget (which enables background data, too), and then, once done, I disable background data and account sync.
In k-9: menu -> folder list -> account -> settings -> background sync -> always. This way imap idle push works even when background data is off.
I then have a remember the milk widget (but Astrid is a valid free alternative) with manual sync, and a pure calendar widget with, again, auto sync off.
This is the best battery life I have ever had from a smartphone! But I am also curious to understand what was using data in the background and draining the battery so much... Having account sync off is a deal breaker for some, but for me it's ok: I don't update calendar and contacts every second, so the trouble of pressing a couple of buttons every now and then is well worth the extended battery life.

I have a strange problem with Push email on my HTC Desire. I can set this up no problem - email comes in but only manually. I cannot get the push to actually work. When I go into the send receive schedule I can set up the days/hours for peak off peak and push but regardless of what I set these to be, when I go back to the previous screen it always says the Schedule is Manual. I've tried setting up lots of variations from manual through timed to push but still the same. Net result is push never seems to happen - manual overrides my schedule. To pick up email I have to go into email and do a manual sync.

I was going to setup push email with my Edge connection (live in Pakistan, only connection available) Was going to do my APN settings. But came across a post which said that some apps required only edge but that some of them needed WiFi or 3G as well. So i was wondering, Does g mail app/ goggle Sync need Wifi/3G or am i good with just edge network Internet?

I'm one who has not bought into all the iPhone and ipad Apple hype. And now that AT&T announced they would limit there data plans I'm even less of a fan.
So I've been using my corporate Blackberry.. I rarely surf on the phone - if ever to just use it to quickly prove a point or get some basic GPS navigation. Basically I use it as a phone, email device and calendar. Occasionaly to take a picture too.
I've not been too excited to change until now.
I understand the Evo can be used as a mobile hotspot at 4g? WOW! Anybody using it to serve wifi for a PS3 online game from it ? does it really work?
What about corporate push email? Will it work with Exchange ActiveSync to keep my Outlook email and calendars current on the phone? What about Gmail and yahoo push email? Will pushing emails from these three servers drain my battery?
How widespread is the Sprint 4g network? Any chance of getting 4g in places like Gainesville, FL, Macon, GA, Helen, Georgia?

I work for comcast and we ose microsoft exchange but i believe we use 2003. thats what it says when i go to my owa website for remote email access. i use the owa for my berry to get the emails pushed and was wondering if android could push it. my remote access website is https://webmail.comcast.com and i don't know if it is possible. i have heard about an app called touchdown but i also don't know if it would work. i am thinking about getting the moment because i am on sprint because it has the faster processor than the hero. i may wait for the supersonic though. if you could please let me know if i can push my email that would be awesome or if it is possible from a different app or way to do it.

I know this has been talked about a lot in these forums, but I don't see any proof one way or the other. Some people say that the only way to get push notifications is to use the gmail app or a 3rd party app, and some people say you can use the stock HTC app and set things up through Exchange. Then some more people say that even setting it up through Exchange is a "pull" account as well, not push. However, what I don't see is hard core proof to back any of this up. I would imagine that there is documentation out there somewhere of what exactly is driving the email collection in the HTC Sense email app, and whether or not it is different for Exchange accounts.

I was just tinkering with my Droid Incredible's "Accounts & Sync" and I am confused about something. With the Gmail app, there is no option to designate how often to check do for messages because it's a push email client, good. But when I check my settings for Exchange, I am given options to select how often to sync. I was under the impression that Exchange ActiveSync is a push email service, meaning I shouldn't need to designate when I want it to sync because it pushes vs. pulling. Am I missing something here?
I am running 2.2 froyo under SkyRaider 2.5

Is it normal for push email to take 3-4 minutes on an android device? I just sent some test emails from my laptop. They arrived at 6:33 pm and the timestamps show the were sent at 6:29. Maybe I'm just spoiled from having a blackberry because I'm used to push email being immediate, not 3-4 minutes later. Is anyone else experiencing this?

Everyone this new email app for Android from Seven that's still in BETA.
It gives you PUSH mail for all the common types of email such as Yahoo, Hotmail, Google and more!
It gives me PUSH mail for my hotmail and keeps all my folders in sync and you don't need hotmail Exchange ActiveSync for it to push!
If like me you require better than pop3 then why don't you give it a try and see what you think.
I have put a link to the website & another link direct to the registration page below.
You need to create an account to be able to download the app direct from them.
When you get to the download page and it asks for your device select OTHER then ANDROID
I'm sure there will be some people who will be very exicted by this app, particularly Hotmail & Live users
SEVEN ? Proven Push Platform for Mobile Applications
Registration page for download.

My husband and i just got Droid X's. We have a business with a website and associated webmail. Our email address is an IMAP account created by our website developer. After trying to configure the embedded mail program, we installed K9 based on a lot of good reviews on this site. We've got it working, the only issue is we can't seem to get it to automatically notify us when a new email comes in as the phone does with Gmail. The notification doesn't come in at all - you have to go into K9 and "Get Mail". We have it set to sync all folders.

I'm having problems setting up my Gmail account with the HTC push email widget. I did enter my Gmail account details when I first set up the phone and they were accepted. I'll walk you through what I do.
1. Go to home screen with large Mail widget then click on it.
2. Click 'Other (POP3/IMAP)'
3. I then enter my email address and password. They are definitely correct. Then I press 'Next'.
4. I then arrive at the 'Incoming Settings' page.
5. I choose IMAP.
6. My email address is already there. My username is there, albeit with 'googlemail' following it (I have tried deleting that - still didn't work).................

I've had my Incredible for almost a week now and I still havent brought myself to set up my Gmail to POP my work and Hotmail accounts. I just don't care for the Gmail system or client for Android OS.
I DO have a Gmail account (pretty much forced into it) but my main accounts are Hotmail and my own custom domain (non-exchange).
Yes, i'm coming from a Blackberry and have been spoiled with the best Push technology out there. No, i will not go back to Blackberry, so please spare the suggestions.
What i am wondering is if there is any 3rd party app out there that will Pop your email acct(s) and push the mail to your phone to either the stock HTC Mail app or it's own 3rd party client.
I've seen K-9 - but not sure if this is what i'm looking for.
I've seen Touchdown - but this appears to be only for Exchange.
Can either of these applications provide Push Email to Android or are there any others out there? If not, does anyone know of any on the horizon?

I have one gmail account, using the default gmail app. I also have a separate gmail account, using Exchange ActiveSync. Push does not work for either of my two gmail accounts.
1. default gmail. It just doesn't push. Today, i went thru the entire day without noticing the email. at 9PM today, I realized that i had missed an email sent at 8am. The only reason I knew this was because I checked my gmail on my computer. So I tried hitting refresh on my incredible's gmail. After a few seconds, the email showed up, 13 hours after it was originally sent. I kept on sending test emails to my gmail, and it just does not show up on my incredible until i hit refresh. this is supposed to be push email...what's going on..?
2. default "Mail" app - exchange activesync. At 9pm, i realized that I had missed 4 emails from throughout the day (a different gmail account). I went into the settings to make sure that the frequency was set to "as items arrive" and realized that it was set to Manual. I thought, aha, i should change this, and i should be fine. However, i realized that I kept on failing to change the setting.

Is anyone else experiencing a problem with email push since the update to Froyo? I have to manually check my emails not because not one of my email accounts is pushing anymore. I have checked in account and sync to verify that the sync is turned on. For some reason, I'm not getting my emails. This worked before and is longer functional. Anyone else having this issue? What should I do?

I have just swtiched from Blackberry to the HTC Desire. On my Blackberry, push email was exactly that - it was instant. On my new Desire I can't seem to find any settings to set it up in the same sort of way i.e instant email. I have succesfully set up around 4 or 5 accounts and the nearest settings I found was setting it to download every 5 minutes. Is this the nearest the Desire get's to push email?

Orange give me unlimited push email, but I can?t for the life of me get it setup. I should be able to go to Orangeworld and setup 3 email accounts to be pushed, so I go to orangeworld.co.uk/emailsetup/ (using gprs only) and click on a link ?setup and manage your email? this page says that I will receive a text within an hour with a link to add my first account but this text never arrives. Tried it several times but no text
Called Orange but they steered me in completely the wrong direction, and now their customer services is closed for the night.

I have a TELUS HTC Hero and a few days ago I was visiting Seattle. While roaming on AT&T my Hero would not do push for my Exchange mail. When I checked the update frequency it was set to "As items arrive" but the field said something like "Sync disabled while roaming". I find it really stupid that this isn't a user setting. Has anyone else found this? The other odd thing was that I couldn't send out mail via Exchange while roaming.

I have a question regarding push vs poll email. Is there ever a valid reason to configure polling on a push email account (ie. as a "backup" if the push fails for some reason)? In other words, if I'm currently receiving pushed email, is it completely useless and redundant to poll the folders as well? Or is it possible polling might work in the event push doesn't? I receive emergency alerts from my work so I'm just wondering if I should set up a 15-minute poll in case an alert doesn't get pushed to my phone. Or can I expect that whenever push fails, polling won't really do any good either?

I'm new to Android having just bought an HTC Desire HD. Great piece of kit but I'm having a lot of problems with connectivity of various apps, especially email and market. Last night, my phone offered an OS update, which I accepted. Since then, my MS Exchange push email has stopped working. I can still sync manually from the email folder, but emails are not being pushed to the phone. Nothing's changed on the exchange side.
Questions:
Anyone else seen this behvaiour?
If so, is there a fix / work-around?
Is there a way to see an OS updates install history?
Is there a way to roll-back an update?
