General :: Making / Editing Custom ROMs Using Linux

Mar 18, 2013

My ideal place to get to is to eventually provide the community here with custom roms and mods which everyone can enjoy on their devices, just like what all the greats devs do here day in day out.... but before I get there, I'm on a path of discovery. At the minute, I want to take a XDA dev's already pre worked ROM, go in to it and change a few things up.... edit the apps, maybe play with a few apks, change the ringtones etc, and then resign the ROM and flash it to my device.

I've been reading some great tutorials such as [URL] ..... which I am finding very useful, however....

They seem to be geared towards someone working on a windows machine. I dont want to do it in Windows, I want to do it in Linux... I dont wish to use "CygWin" and I would rather do it manually than use a kitchen - I could easily follow these guides in Windows and achieve my stated aim of a slightly modified custom ROM, however, the overall goal here is to acquire knowledge, and enjoy the process as it goes along.

Now, my current understanding under Linux (Mint 13) is that I can download a recovery flashable Zip, go in to it, and just change up some of the files as I desire.... but then I get confused when it comes to repackaging the ROM prior to flashing it to my device. How would I go about doing this?

Samsung Behold 2 :: How Do We Start Making ROMs?

Dec 9, 2009

I have little doubt that the battery problems would be solved by bumping out of cupcake. I actually like Touchwiz, but it seems to be causing a ton of problems. Once we get 2.0 from Samsung, I don't think we can rely on it to fix the little things. It's time to bump it up to stock ourselves. I'm no ROM cooker, but I'm willing to try. Now that we have persistent root, what next? How do we start making ROMs for this thing?

General :: Battery Not Charging To 100% LG Marquee

May 25, 2012

I have had the issue of plugging the phone it at around 9pm when going to bed and it charging to 100% the next morning at around 7:30-8am but as soon as i unplug the charger it drops from 100% to 99 to 97%? Im using the battery circle app to monitor my battery %. I have "calibrated" the battery by using the phone until it shuts it self off then charging it to 100% while its off then unplug it and turn it on and then plugging it back in.

Usually i will get between 15-19+ hours on normal use if i unplug it and plug it back up when it drops suddenly to 9-% in the mornings but if i dont ill get somewhere around 13 hours of life. is there something wrong with the phone, battery or charger?

Android :: Why Setting TextView.Ellipsize As Marquee Cause Its Sibling View In Linearlayout Redraw

We are using TextView's Ellipsize function to scrolling text in it and there many other controls in our window. We noticed CPU would go up to 50% if text started scrolling. After digging deeper, we found all controls in our layout kept drawing when texts scrolling. We wonder why? And how to avoid all controls redrawing?

Android : Way To Make Ellipsize - "marquee" Always Scroll?

Dec 1, 2009

I want to use the marquee effect on a TextView, but the text is only being scrolled when the TextView gets focus. That's a problem, because in my case, it can't.

I am using:

android:ellipsize="marquee"
android:marqueeRepeatLimit="marquee_forever"

Is there a way to have the TextView always scroll its text? I've seen this being done in the Android Market app, where the app name will scroll in the title bar, even if it doesn't receive focus, but I couldn't find this being mentioned in the API docs.

HTC Incredible :: PSX4Droid Adding Roms - Can't Seem To Get Any Roms To Work?

Jul 27, 2010

So PSX4Droid finally got released from the clutches of Google Market about an hour ago. Only problem now is I can't seem to get any roms to work. I set up a PSXROMS folder on my SD card, and my first d/l was Metal Gear Solid disc 1 and 2. I got them from here PSX ISO Download Section. So I downloaded the .rar, unzipped to get the .bin (says it's compatible), open the emulator, the emulator sees the files in the folder, I click it, it refreshes the rom screen. The emulator doesn't start. Am I doing something wrong? Wrong file type?

General :: Making Unremovable App

Aug 15, 2013

I know making a real unremovable app is impossible, but I hope I'll be able to find a way to make an app harder to remove.I want to make some kind of parental protection app. it should be installed easily without much technical knowledge ( preferred that it will work on unrooted devices). the app should be hard to remove or disable by the phone user.who ever installed the app should be able to remove (probably with a password in the app settings).

I don't care if technical users will be able to easily remove the app.I also don't care if the users will know that the app is installed on their device.I guess the simplest solution will be to some how hide the app from the app drawer.I saw some where that Cerberus has that option but I guess it requires a root.

another solution might be if there is an option in the android os itself setting an admin password that will not allow the user to install or remove any apps without the password.

General :: Making USB Gamepads To Work

Jun 10, 2013

What is required in the Android OS to support USB Gamepads?

I have purchased an Android TV Box from Chinavasion [URL] ..... which has 4 USB ports. While it's mostly going to be used to watch TV, I thought it might be nice to play a few games on it.

I can plug keyboards and mice into it and they work just fine. But gamepads don't work at all. I understand that from honeycomb gamepads are supposed to be supported natively so I guess there must be something missing in the firmware?

I have installed USB Device Info app. The gamepads are not listed in the "Android" tab, but do show up in the Linux tab (though to be fair, the same is true of the keyboard and mouse).

I've been out of the game for a while when it comes to making videos and editing them. Will I bought myself a droid x two years ago and was gonna take up the hobby then but technology has come so far since eight years ago and the thought just scares me. Now I have a razr maxx, and i wanna start making videos, what kind of software would you suggest, what formats of videos are there now?

I feel that a cell phone would make the quality videos I'm interested in, it much better than my old Sony handycam

General :: Viber 4.2 Crashes While Trying Making Call

Jan 25, 2014

I have a problem with Viber 4.2 on Android 4.4.2 Samsung / Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition.

Viber 4.2 crashes while trying making the call (crash happens when other party answers) or while receiving the call (in the moment of answer). Also, Viber crashes while changing some options in Settings. For example, changing Settings->Privacy->Collect analytics crashes Viber. Uninstall/Reinstall/reboot device does not work. Downgrade to Viber 4.1 (still available on Viber web site) solved the problem but Viber 4.2 has new interesting options (block list, ring tone selection), so, I would like to use Viber 4.2 (but without these critical bugs).

Same problem was listed on other board (Moto G phone / Android 4.4.2).

General :: Edify Commands For Making Flashable ZIP?

Feb 10, 2012

I'm planning on using the UpdatezipCreator from this thread http[URL].... to build an update script for some APK updates I want to package up. It appears this app has the ability to build a update-binary file for you.

I have APK files in both the system/app and data/app that I want to be copied to my phone.

First thing, can I have multiple destinations for the files in the script? I haven't found any examples with two destinations and there doesn't seem to be a spot to configure the source which makes me think it just takes everything in the zip and puts it in the folder you specifiy in the package_extract_dir function and that adding a second "package_extract_dir" function would confuse it.

The second question is I keep running across scripts that us busybox instead of the built in commands. Why would you need to/want to do that?This is what I would think would work for my script:

Code:
ui_print("Preparing to update");
ui_print("Copying files..");
package_extract_dir("system", "/system");[CODE].....

General :: GS5 - BusyBox Or Xposed Making It Run Slow?

Jun 9, 2014

I've rooted my Sprint Galaxy S5 and it made the phone work slow. The buttons took a good 3-4 seconds before responding, and sometimes would not respond at all. "HealthService" would always crash, and other slowdowns like when I drag down the notification bar. I installed Xposed and BusyBox. However, the phone was working slow before those were installed. So I unrooted it and flashed the stock ROM, and everything worked fine. Time passed by... I decided to root it again. So I did, same method, same files, and it was working normal. No slowdowns, buttons worked perfectly and were responsive. "HealthService" still force stops but I presume that is an easy fix. Then I installed BusyBox and Xposed again. Once both were installed and after 5-7 minutes, the phone started to work slow as before.

General :: CWM 6.0.3.2 - Error Making Android Backup?

Oct 23, 2013

I flashed cwm 6.0.3.2 to my device samsung galaxy young s6312, stock android 4.1.2 jellybean, rooted, using a tutorial on xda. One of the reasons I flashed it was to create a nandroid backup. But when I try to backup my phone, it backs up boot image, recovery, system, and then it begins backing up data. After some time I got an error, "error while creating backup image of /data". Also when I rebooted my device after this, I saw that my external sd card (where the backup was getting stored) was totally full. So is this a problem with my storage?? Do I need more free space to create a Android backup?? Btw, I have 2 GB free memory on my external sd card.
