Sprint HTC Hero : Warning - 6/3 Software Update Will Kill Root
Jun 4, 2010
Sprint just tweeted about a new update for Hero. It would come up under "HTC software" section of system updates. Doesn't seem like it does much at all, but reports are that it will kill root.

I have seen rumors that the offical 2.1 update will disable the ability to root. I have a rooted Hero running Fresh 2.0d (about to update to 2.1.1 or Toast) however my wife has a stock Hero. She is not a major geek so I have not roooted her phone yet, however I plan on doing it soon. I was going to wait til the offical 2.1 came out to see if she liked it and if she didn't I would root her phone.
Will the offical 2.1 make it so I can not root her phone? If so, I need to root her phone before Sprint pushes this out OTA.

Android Central posted a FAQ for the Hero that linked to a post on their forums suggesting that this would speed up the Hero. I must have somehow missed this because it's the first I've ever heard about it.Anyone know if there's any truth to it?

I recently rooted my phone and was wondering how to install custom themes and lock screens for my hero. I am new to this as the title implies, so a link/instructions on how to install/create these would be what I'm looking for. I also am looking for solutions that do not need to install a new ROM as I just want to mod the current one that I have since i haven't found one I like. I rooted the 2.27.651.5 official sprint software with the instructions from the xda forum here: [GUIDE] How to Root Sprint 2.1 Release for CDMA Hero - xda-developers.

Please Post all Sprint Hero update rumors here. This not to be confused with the " Official 2.1 Thread. I would also sugest to our ever so patient moderators to move any post of this nature to this thread. Let's clean up the forum and when the update is out out we can get rid of all this with one flush.

I searched up Android 2.1 on Google and I Found a website with Sprint Hero - 2.1 leaked! "Website: Sprint HTC Hero Android 2.1 Upgrade Leaked" Rumors have been flying around the web about Spring releasing an official Android 2.1 upgrade for their HTC Hero mobile phone. The dates for the Android 2.1 upgrade for the Spring HTC Hero have been speculated to be either on April 29th, and others simply by the end of April. But according to BlogsDNA.com, hackers at XDA Developers forum have leaked a Sprint HTC Hero test ROM marked:
RUU_Hero_C_Sprint_2.20.651.1_signed_test The stands for Radio Unit Update, and is a common package that HTC phones of all kinds use, from Windows Mobile Phones to Android Roms.Without a doubt, the remaining days in the month of April building up to be full of high profile mobile phone announcements.Expected this month (April) are the HTC Incredible and Nexus One at Verizon, and now this, the Sprint HTC Hero Android 2.1 upgrade.
Rumors were also spreading about a possible iPhone / Verizon deal being announced. We ve already had the iPhone OS 4.0 announcement. And of course, I would be remiss to leave out the iPad announcement from Apple.

Rooting Android 1.5 on the Sprint Hero. Rooting 2.1 can be found HERE. Manually rooting your phone: This section will cover how to manually root your phone. Keep in mind there is a one-click method, but reading this is helpful and educational. You do not have to do it this way, but I suggest at least reading though it. The following was taken from here: Before We Begin, here is a video on doing this manually:You Tube - How To Root The Sprint CDMA Hero.

It arrives in the mail in a day or two, and I want to know if I should root it first thing before activating it or wait til I get it registered. Will I be able to install the official updates after being rooted? I hear that they fix a ton of issues.

I went through all the troubleshooting steps in the "Update Available From Sprint" thread, making sure I was on v1.29.651.1, yada yada. Worked on this for a week and a half. Spoke with Sprint, spoke with HTC, no luck. Going to firmware update always reported NO UPDATE AVAILABLE.
Took the phone back to Best Buy and demanded an exchange. After receiving the new phone, went to try to firmware update, it showed that one was available. I asked for my old battery back since it was charged fully so that I could do the update. Put my old battery back in, went to update, NO UPDATE AVAILABLE!
Turns out it was my battery? Put the new one back in and the update was successful. I had scoured the net before but did not notice anyone with this particular issue. I

Does anyone know if the upcoming Android 2.1 update to the Sprint Hero will allow us to save apps to the SD card without having to root the phone? And also, some things to think about: remember that the Hero only runs class 2 speeds, even if the card is class 6. Do you think this will change once we receive Android 2.1? Because if not, I would imagine that the phone would be slow opening apps (assuming apps to SD will be available).I know that if they do program the Hero to allow class 6 speeds, and allow apps to SD (without root) then the Hero could run MUCH faster than it does now.

Okay so i did the the unrevoked method of rooting my htc hero and it worked fine for a couple months however one morning my phone reset it self and the superuser permissions icon in the apps tray was gone. I tried running through the steps to root it again (How to root your CDMA HTC HERO running Android 2.1 (Windows) | MacHackPC) but the superuser icon never came back. I'm not sure what to do, I even tried pressing the on button and the home to select flash from recovery and that didn't work either. any idea how i can get my phone re-rooted?

I know I'm in the minority here but I DON"T want Froyo!! As a former Eris owner who had to suffer through having my phone ruined by the 2.1 update, which is why i now have a droid, I'm not willing to let verizon/moto ruin another phone I'm very happy with now... Is there a way to kill the message that comes up notifying me of the update or do I just have to be annoyed by it?

I had been using Fresh Rom 2.0d by flipz since last night, and got everything setup, last night I had trouble updating the Profile and PRL so this morning I tried it again and succeeded the PRL update, unfortunately right after the PRL update the Sprint Network never came back. I can ROAM when I switch off Sprint Only but no Sprint Network. What can I do to resolve the issue? Tried resetting the phone to no help, pulled the battery and reset, also attempted to update PRL and Profile again but without Service it won't do either.

I think I've found quite a serious problem with the Google maps for Android update that just came out late last week.I have a Latitude account, but I havent signed it in on this phone as I don't want battery and data being wasted updating my location, plus most of the time the whole location tracker thing is a bit Big Brother for me anyway. But after the update, one of my friends warned me that i had appeared on Latitude, and it turns out that the update signed me in there and set itself to automatically update my location. If this is happening to others, this represents a serious lapse at Google - it should be up to me to switch on the service, it should not automatically sign in - let alone automatically update my location! This phone has never prompted me to switch it on, and that is not acceptable. My location is a private matter and my battery life and data are precious, goddamnit.

About to make the commitment to rooting and flashing to Fresh 1.1, but before I start on that path, I just want to detail my plan and ask a few questions. This is my first time rooting
1. Download that one program to downgrade/take off that recent firmware update
2. Download Fresh 1.1
3. Download File manager (any suggestions?)
4. Follow one-click rooting steps
5. Flash to Fresh 1.1
6. Download/use Nandroid to create a backup
7. Download and install patch for browser's flash player
Am I leaving anything out? Does the order look correct?..................
