I'm hoping to get a little insight here from the members of the community that have devices that are not rooted, or from members that have experience prior to their rooting. Before I go into my questioning, I do want to preface this by stating that I have considered rooting my phone in the past, and have even tried (but failed) using the PreKitchen. Since then, I have made a definite decision that I will not be rooting my device. I have done TONS of research and reading on the topic, have asked and have had answered a lot of questions, and I've just decided that I do not want to do it. Yes, I understand the pros of doing it, I just choose not to. That being said, I would respectfully ask that those who take the time to respond to this post, please don't suggest rooting.
Ok, so I've owned the Hero since October, and for the most part, it has performed only marginally. The quirks, odditys and under performance issues I have experienced are nothing different from what has been talked about on this board, or others. Some issues, however, have been persistently bad, even after the "typical" troubleshooting methods have been used. Additionally, some of the things I've seen my device do haven't been talked about, or at least not in great detail, by many people. Some of the issues that I am experiencing, I am hoping that 2.1 will cure, however, I've come to a breaking point where I don't want to wait it out for the upgrade to finally release, only to find out that it didn't help. I've talked to Sprint Advanced Tech Support a few times and they seem to believe that it's a faulty device. Whether or not that is their response because they are stumped, or if the device actually IS faulty is what I'm hoping to figure out. They have agreed to send a replacement device to me, so I'm trying to get a feel for what to expect. Below are some of the issues I'm experiencing:
1. Wifi will not stay connected 85% of the time, despite a strong signal.
2. Apps take quite a bit of time to respond. The phone, however, does not seem to lag all that much. Screens respond pretty quickly and swiping is pretty smooth. Apps just take quite a bit of time to open/respond, even if still in "running" mode in the background.
3. Browser and other data requesting apps take quite a bit of time to get data, despite a strong EVDO signal or strong Wifi signal.
4. The phone's antenna seems to be weak. I can barely get a signal in my office (a one story building, sitting close to a window) and I'm in a heavily populated city. I've never had a hard time getting any less than 3 bars on any other Sprint phone in this location. Additionally, in areas where reception should be strong, I've found my phone switching between 1x and EVDO for data, and Roaming for voice.
There are other miscellaneous issues as well. I also want to stress that all of the typical troubleshooting methods have been done. I hard reset the phone last week and cleaned house, and am still seeing these issues. Prior to hard resetting, I had around 25-30 MB of free space on the phone. After the hard reset, I'm around 75 MB of free space, so that doesn't seem to be an issue. Text messages are cleared off the phone as they come in and program caches are cleared out daily. As for the signal issues, that's something I can't figure out, and neither can Sprint Tech Support, which is why I'm getting the replacement. My questions to the community are these:
1. I know that some of the issues I have listed are common among Hero users, however, does troubleshooting (clearing caches, texts, etc) solve the issues, or do they persist?
2. Has anyone had signal/data speed issues?
3. For people who have had replacement devices for issues similar to these, did the new device work better, or is this just a function of the device? One of the main reasons I ask these questions is because if this is going to continue to be an issue from device to device, there is no need to waste time continually swapping phones. I think at that point, I'll just have to wait for 2.1, hope it resolves the issues, and if not, cross that bridge at that time. I've expressed concern to the Sprint reps about receiving a refurb device. They had stated that it isn't up to them what gets shipped, however, they did advise that if a refurb was shipped, to send it back and go to a repair center to return it (in hopes that they have new phones on hand). I'm truly hoping that this is an issue with my device and not the Hero itself.
My gf want's to root her hero. She just installed the latest update from sprint. Do we still have an exploit to root this thing? If so, will the guide at the top of this forum still work?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI manually rooted my sprint 2.1 stock rom & removed all sprint bloatware. Running very smoothly & seems to be able to keep up with me. Even after calibrating the keyboard, it can keep up to my 75wps (when flipped horizontal)!
Is there anything, any customizations or whatnot, available for us stock users? I work nearly full-time on a retail schedule and have a highly active toddler so I really don't want to mess with flashing stuff because I *rarely* have more than a half hour-45 minutes to myself XP
Is there a stock 2.1 rom i could flash that also has root. I dont want any of the other stuff the other roms have. Wife has 1.5 stock. I have the latest damged rom. I would like to upgrade hers to latest radio, latest boot rom etc and just 2.1 stock rom with root access.
Or has anyone found a root for 2.1 so i could just install that and root it?
If there is a add-on that can be flashed over the stock sense-UI 2.1? I am of course rooted but want to retain the stock look and feel. I do realize there are roms out there that do this but I have a lot of time invested in tweaking the stock rom and it works excellent for my needs. I just want to rock the Super Mario live wallpaper!

I have chompSMS as my txt app. I took a look at the pre-kitchen, but I use a mac so wanted to see if there are any other alternatives.

Edit: Well, I just found an answer to the second question. I didn't realize the "free" memory is immediately used up by cache. More free memory = larger cache. So, that said, I would still like to know what the "recommended settings" would be.

I followed it word for word all the way through step 34, it is stuck going through the sprint / 4g splash page it will not turn off I am afraif to do a battery pull casue I do not want it bricked my phone is great ver3 release day order.
View 3 Replies View RelatedThere's been a lot of comparison between the stock Hero and Moment but I was wondering if anyone has played with both a rooted Hero and Moment. Becoming more and more set on switching over to the Hero.Rooted & got CL14 on my Moment last night thanks to zefie, numus, and the great guys at sdx, but maybe I just had my expectations too high as I didn't see a large improvement over the stock kernel & ROM, esp in speed (did fix the battery meter and improved battery life thank god!).I understand rooting a Hero makes it faster but by how much? How does it compare to a rooted Moment running a home replacement app (like PandaHome)? This way I feel it's comparing apples to apples in terms of experience, as opposed to compared to a rooted Moment running stock home.Ever since I got the Moment, I've been trying to get Sense-like stuff on it (like a lot of ppl haha). Coming from the less-sophisticated BB Curve, I was surprised when stock Android didn't support things like Facebook integration (I know it's coming in 2.1, but HTC has it now).

I'm on a rooted Orange Hero running SenseHero2.1. I'd rather not have to unroot my phone to try out the official 2.1 ROM. Chances are I'd try and go back to using the custom ROM anyway.
So is there a way to get a rooted 'stock' Orange 1.5 ROM on my phone, so that I could try getting the update OTA for 2.1?
In preparation for the release of the official HTC 2.1 ROM, can I have come advise on how I go about changing from the Villain Rom 5.3 that I'm currently running to the new official one?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI've been fiddling around with my Hero for a while and tried a few different things including Autokiller which is an alright program but didn't provide much noticeable difference to the performance of my phone. I've just been fiddling around with overclocking aswell. The reason I decided to try overclocking was because I bought Snesoid and the games were really laggy even with the sound disabled, even on more basic games like super Mario. I've tried overclocking to roughly 650, the 690 then 710 with not a lot of difference when using snesoid and with the phone in general tbh. I'm wondering if it's something else causing the phone to be laggy even after trying numerous things, could it be sense?

Anyone got any ideas why it's still a bit laggy and very laggy with snesoid, I'm running VillainRom12 aswell btw.
Does anyone else want the stock (white) nofication bar on the Sprint Hero? If any one has it on their please share how to get it. I think because its a HTC phone it is made with the black bar, but is their anyway to extract the APK from any other android phone if such a file exists and just install it on the Hero, I really prefer the white one.

i rooted my daughter's sprint hero and installed 1.1 fresh rom. now her phone won't connect via bluetooth with her car. it worked fine before rooting. is there a fix?

When I go into the boot mode and select run update.zip from the menu, it never installs. It always says error. Also, the only choice I have at the boot menu is update. I don't have the choice to choose the zip file I would like to run.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI recently Rooted my Sprint HTC Hero and all was fine. I went around flashing various ROMs to find which one I liked the most. I installed Fresh 3.2.2 and I love it! It keeps Sense UI with extras like the Friend Stream widget, but the only problem is my phone runs on Edge/1x only now and that internet is just too slow!
