Sprint HTC Hero :: Unable To Reboot To Recovery
Nov 10, 2010
I am using a CDMA HTC Hero (sprint). I have rooted the device via Universal Androot which worked flawlessly. I am now trying to flash a custom rom, which is already loaded onto my SD Card (Red Dawn). Here in lies my problem:
Using Rom Manager, I flashed the ClockworkMod Recovery successfully but when i chose to ""Reboot from Recovery" the phone gets hung up at the white HTC boot screen indefinitely until I battery pull.
I have tried many, many different approaches and am now seeking some desperate advise as to how to get into recovery mode so i may flash the new rom. I have tried to enter recovery manually (vol down/pwr on) only for it to get hung on the HTC screen as soon as I chose recovery. I have tried to "Flash Alternative Rom" and the re-flashing the ClockworkMod Recovery all to no avail.

Today my phone started continuously re-booting itself. Only gets to the HTC screen and then re-boots. I have done multiple battery pulls with no results. I cannot boot into recovery either, tried that many times as well. My only option is a screen that I have not seen before that asks if I want to clear all data and then reset the device.

I rooted a friends phone and when I try to get to the recovery reboot screen it freezes on the HTC screen, I have to remove the battery and boot normally, and it works just fine. I have rooted two other hero's with no problems. I've tried a wipe and doing the process over again and the same thing happened.

well I successfully have my phone rooted and was finally going to get around to installing a new ROM on my phone today. However when I tried to make a nandroid backup my phone wouldn't start up into the recovery thing to let me make a backup, instead it would just sit at the white and green HTC page indefinitely until I would pull the battery at. Any ideas on how to fix this?

Does anyone else run into the same problem as I do? If my phone dies or I do a reboot I get to the lock screen and it says no signal and does not pick up a cell signal at all. During normal use it said no signal before, but a few seconds later it got a signal. Now it will not get a signal at all and the only way to get a signal again is to do a factory reset. Is the jump to 2.1 supposed to fix all this too?

I have a hero and so does my boyfriend and they both just randomly reboot. Sometimes while we're using them and sometimes they are just sitting on a table and they reboot! Has anyone else had this problem? If so, is there a fix? We are both out of the 30-day time frame but we do have insurance on both.

I've notice recently my Hero has been acting up, almost as if it is rebooting. However, I don't believe it is a full reboo, i.e. no sprint logo during boot. Only occurs when exiting out from the internet browser. As soon as you hit the home screen to exit, the phone returns to the white htc load page. It appears like it is the full reboot but it does not move next to the Sprint/Now pages. Next the desktop appears but it is grayed out (i.e. my desktop still shows but grayed out, no icons or widgets showen) and the spinning loading icon shows up. Once it finishes loading things appear back to normal. Almost makes me wonder if this reboot is more like sense rebooting and not the entire phone/system. Not sure if this is possible but I want to get anyone's thoughts and if anyone else had expirenced this.

I was just curious how often you reboot your phones? Since I've stopped using a task killer and letting android manage things, I've been having to do it twice a day to keep it speedy and usable. Usually in the morning I reboot, read my rss feeds, check this forum & facebook (browser), some emails and some light texting. Once I get to working around 7:30am (I work landscaping) I pop in the earbuds and listen to soma fm with droid live lite till lunch at 11:15. Lunch time I plug in the phone for about 40 minutes to boost up the battery to get me through my music habit for the rest of the workday which ends at 3pm.
I've noticed that if I don't reboot after lunch, my phone is just sluggish and slow as can be. Especially if I've got droid live running and I get a text or an email. I only run two widgets, the "flip clock" and the small style calendar underneath it on my home screen. So I don't think that has much of an effect on my phones performance in the long run. When I was using a task killer, the only time I would reboot was when I woke up in the morning and I was good for the rest of the day. I've been considering running a task killer again, as android doesn't seem to be doing as great of a job managing things as I'd like, but I wanna hear some of your input and experiences first.

I originally posted this in the CM 6 thread, but after doing a nandroid restore and also flashing to Fresh 2.4 I'm still having this issue. I rebooted my phone this morning (was running CM6 6.1.0 RC1) and ever since the reboot I cannot connect to any google services and the data connection when connecting to webpages is hit or miss. When I try to connect to my google account on the initial setup for CM6 and for Fresh 2.4 I get the error: 'cant establish a reliable data connection to the server'. I have good to great signal strength yet terrible connection. Would updating my radio help? After doing some googling someone suggested updating my profile through the system settings. Can I do that with a rooted phone or do I have to flash back to an official update?

I'll be on my phone browsing through the net, on my apps etc. Then once I get back to my home screen all of a sudden my screen freezes and the "HTC screen" pops up (same screen when you reboot your phone) and then I will have to wait a minute or two for everything to load up again. I've had my hero since January and this problem recently just began last week. It happens quite often and it's really irritating. I always clear my cache/data/history. Could it perhaps be some of the applications I downloaded from the market causing this?

Anyone else's phone randomly stop receiving SMS messages? I even have SMStomail installed and it doesn't catch the SMS messages at all. I can make calls, get emails, but no SMS at all until I reboot. It's happened twice and is beginning to get annoying.
This is not the same as the SMS/VM issue because a simple reboot solves it, and I am no where near 40mb on my ROM, and the SMStomail service doesn't catch it.

Because of the way I rooted my phone through pre-kitchen I have 2 recovery images on my SD card, v1.2.3.img and v1.5.2.img. I am running RA 1.5.2 so I assume I can just delete v1.2.3.img but want to make sure. Secondly after installing Fresh's flash patch I can delete the zip correct?

I have a Sprint Hero CDMA which is like half-rooted?
It was not rooted, was running on the Sprint 2.1 update. I dropped it back down to .5, got through the rooting aspect, have SuperUser in my app tray, but now it won't let me boot into the recovery menu!
Every time I try, it just pops up a black screen with a phone on it and a big red Caution symbol over it...
Any ideas how to fix this so I can finish rooting my phone or even use the recovery menu options?

My rooted Evo keeps hanging up after I try to reboot into recovery. When I rooted my Evo I had used a bat file from my desktop to get into recovery after original root. My question is will I have to run this file again from my desktop with my Evo connected to get into recovery mode again to flash fresh Rom. Will there be any issues with running this recovery file again. Or Am I missing a step to get into recovery. Power off hold volume down while power on volume scroll down to recovery press power button.

My niece recently got this phone and dropped it the other day. It landed on the volume down button and now gives an error when she restarted it about no Sim Recovery or something like that. I haven't seen it yet as I won't see her again til the weekend. Is their anything she can do to fix the issue. I had her remove the battery and while the cover was off she was able to get the volume down button unpressed and working again.
When placing the battery back in the phone will no longer power on. Is recovery loaded by the volume down and power button? I thought I read somewhere the Home key was also needed to boot into recovery on the phone. Can I download any stock back up to place on her SIM card if infact this is the issue? Thanks for the help. I have a moment and I know it in an out but the hero is new to me still. I am gonna have her take it to sprint if we can't figure this out if I must but I hate dealing with the local repair center.

I rooted my Hero using the manual rooting guide in this forum. everything seemed to go fine. Since then, I have tried ROM Manager, entering recovery mode using adb, holding down the volume button and pressing the end button, and holding down the home button and pressing the end button. They all have the same reaction, the phone will come up with the htc logo and then the screen goes blank and then the only thing I can do after that is remove the battery. Sometimes the only thing that is different is the htc logo will stay on the screen and freeze at that point, once again requiring me to remove the battery to do anything. I have tried this using three different recovery images 1.2.3, 1.5.2, and 1.6.2...all of them have the same outcome when I try to enter recovery.

I am stuck at step 8 in the manual rooting steps. When I type in the recovery boot, I don't enter into recovery mode. Instead, all I see is nothing but the white HTC, standing there unless I take the battery out and boot it back to regular OS. Do I have to hold home button and power button, immediately after I enter -recovery boot? and what button is the power button to make sure?
I know I did the first few steps of the inputing codes correctly, but how do I know I flashed my recovery image 1.6.2 correctly? When I typed into cmd: flash_image recovery recovery-RA-hero-v1.6.2.img
I immediately got that # sign below it. Do i have to wait for a minute or so before doing recovery boot? I know I pushed my recovery to my SD correctly, it says the kilobytes on the cmd screen and can find it on SD memory.
And one more thing" I typed in both these codes as written: adb push recovery-RA-hero-v1.6.2.img /sdcard and flash_image recovery recovery-RA-hero-v1.6.2.img throughout the rooting process. Does it matter if I put a "c" after "hero" in both of those codes, because when I do, I get no file and directory error. And the reason I took out the "c" was because my file was named, recovery-RA-hero-v1.6.2, originally when I downloaded it, so that is probably why I got the error of no file directory when I added a "c" after hero in those coding inputs.

I have never rooted my phone before. I am running 2.27.651.6. I am trying to follow the instructions here to install Fresh Rom 2.1.2.
When I turn my phone off and try to boot into recovery mode by holding down the Home and Power buttons, I get a picture of a phone with a little red exclamation point beside it that will not go away. I eventually had to take the battery out of the back of it to get it to go away. Put the battery back in and it works fine but I would really like to install that Rom.

I have a Sprint Hero that I have rooted and in trying to do a Nandroid backup have found myself unable to get to recovery mode. I hold Home, hit power and the system hangs on the initial HTC screen until I remove the battery. After that the phone will boot into the regular OS just fine.
Now I am kinda stuck here, without recovery mode I can't even restore my phone back to stock can I? It's not urgent since my phone works normally otherwise.

Now I'm trying to install Fresh 3.2.00 from
[ROM] 9/3/10 | Fresh Evo 3.2.0.0 | New OTA Base + New Stagefright + New HTC Kernel - xda-developers
I have ROM Manager installed and Flash ClockworkMod Recovery done. I already put the fresh-evo-3.2.0.0.zip into the SD card. Tried Installing ROM from SD card, checking Backup Existing ROM and Wipe Data and Cache and it asks me to reboot into recovery. Here's the problem, it restarts and just stays on the white screen with the htc EVO 4G logo.
