Sprint HTC Hero :: Swype And Voice To Text
Oct 6, 2010
Possible to have options for Swype and voice to text in input textboxes on the HTC Hero?
Will Sprints Hero get Froyo automatically later this month and will Froyo offer Swype and Voice-to-Text in all the popular the input application boxes?

I thought this was supposed to be a huge feature in 2.1, am I missing the option to activate it? Was hoping to dictate texts and email, but I don't see the mic symbol on my input keyboard, and a cursory search of google nets results that point toward menu options that don't exist on my hero...

I noticed that the version of swype that we should be able to use for our incredibles it might not be possible to use voice to text.
Does anyone know if theres a way to add the functionality to a swype keyboard that we install.
I dont have the phone yet, so cant test anything, but would appreciate some input from those who have them already, or anyone else in the know.
From what I can discern, would it be possible to follow the steps listed here: Add Full Voice to Text To HTC Phones Nimbu to add the functionality to the swype keyboard thats we can install?

I've noticed the Galaxy S phones have Swype Keyboards without the microphone icon, meaning you can't launch speech2text from the keyboard. However on the DroidX, the keyboard looks identical, but it does have the mic. Can we download a new version of swype that has this enabled. I like swype but want to be able to talk to my phone.

I accidentally hit the speaker on the keyboard while in text mode a few times and I just assumed it was for searching BING. Last night I hit it and decided to try to search with it.... but instead what I said got typed into the text that was open!!!! I was blown away! So then I started texting my Bro-In-Law via voice and although it's not perfect, it is very neat! I wish I could read to it and train it better on my Pittsburgh-ees, but if I pause at each word and announciate, it is almost perfect. I just cant talk totally normal. All in all, that is a super cool feature that WinMobilePro could not match.... no way no how. Me likes!

should the voice mail icon have a number on it like the email or text icons if you get a new voicemail? If I get a notification, it only shows up on the task bar. I was also experiencing not recieving texts. I have since done a reset which fixed the text issue (and sleep-for now), but not the voicemail. Should I take the phone back? I fear its anotjer software bug, not hardware. I love this phone, but I'm getting very annoyed that it can't even do what its suppose to.

I want to be on GV 100% (voice, txt, whatever else GV provides) the problem wiht this so far is that i get duplicate text messages - which is annoying the reason for my frustration as i see it is that GV is not as integrated into the phone the same way voice calls are - when you dial out, it goes out through my GV number, not my number from my carrier now, i could send a txt to someone using google's GV widget, but the problem with that is i lose the ability to click on the Messages button in the contact's info page (see pg 36 in the manual) and see my entire text history with that client bummer however, as a result of this whole stock-message-app-draining-the-battery "thing" i've jumped onboard the handcent bandwagon turns out, handcent stores its messages in the phones database/memory/whatever so that the text history is retained and accessible via that Messages button in the contact info page! nice! now.. if only you could send OUT to GV's system through these 3rd party messaging apps (thus avoiding GVs app and its inability to save/store txt msg history in the contacts page), we would be set!
Well, today i learned that when a person sends you a txt through the GV service (ie - they send you a text to your GV number), it appears to you as a 406 area code (see here - read TuXian's post) and furthermore, you can save that number in the contact's info page and send to that person using that number its not "perfect" because its not "seamless" -- the end user has to THINK - and DO SOMETHING for this system to work which is okay for us "techies" and "enthusiasts" - but for the general public, that's not gonna cut it but it seems to work at this point either HTC needs to improve teh Sense UI to incorporate content generated in the GV widget/app, or google needs to store its data in the Hero's file structure.... but this is definitely "kludgy" and they will need to a better job if they expect to rival apple and the iphone in a meaningful and significant way (ok, where did that little rant come from!)

I finally changed the voicemail system on my Hero from Sprint's "visual voicemail" (which is misleading because it doesn't transcribe voicemails) to Google Voice. It's nice to see my transcribed voicemails now. However, when I actually want to hear them (if the transcription didn't work well), it only comes through the external speaker; the speaker on the back of the phone. I went into Google Voice settings and under "Voicemail Playback" I tried the only two options: "Play via Handset" and "Play via Speaker." Unfortunately, both play through the speaker phone speaker. How do I change it to the phone speaker? I also can't adjust the volume, so the whole world hears my voicemails through the external speaker.

So I have the Droid X but I noticed that the Droid 2 now has a themed version of Swype to fit in with the rest of the UI. I like it a lot.
My question is this. When you push the voice-to-text button does it pop up a window like earlier versions of Swype or does it do the really fast and slick thing that the multi touch keyboard does (just replace the keyboard with the audio waveform thing).

I just got a Sprint Hero and I'm coming from Palm phones that always had physical keyboards. At this point in time--I've had it for about a week--it's frustrating beyond words to peck away on the virtual keyboard, slow as molasses, with about as much accuracy as a two year old trying to spell.
I know Swype would help immensely. Is there any way to get it even though the beta is closed? Would begging and bribing the makers of swype help? I really want a virtual keyboard for a number of reasons, but the stock keyboard on the Hero is terrible.

Is anyone else interested in how Google voice will affect calling minutes? If you currently have your GV number set to call your Sprint cell and your incoming call is from another cell phone will you be charged for the minutes? If you setup your phone so GV is used to call all numbers that you dial will you be charged for calling other cellular number because GV masks the number? I have been through every level of support that Sprint offers and no one can answer me. Sadly tier 3 technical support told me "Google Voice is useless on a cell phone and you would not want to use this anyway". I had nothing more to say after that!

I have noticed on some threads that people were having issues with their widgets and Swype on the Cyanogen Froyo ROM. I was having this issue as well. Whenever I rebooted my phone I would have to make Swype my default keyboard again, and reinstall certain widgets. But I think I have found a solution. I noticed that Swype and some of these widgets had been stored on the SD card instead of on the phone. So I went into my settings and into application management and moved them over to the phone. That seemed to solve the issue. Give it a try and see if that fixes your problem, if you were having it.

Sent them an email last week asking about voice to text and also g-sensors calibration being missing and this is the reply
These options are not included in the Official HTC 2.1 Release for the Hero. The reasons for not including these are down to Google Android who develop the Applications and what devices and updates will include them. Thanks for contacting HTC. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us again.

On the home screen, menu, settings, call settings there is "voice privacy" and "voice privacy notification" does anybody know what call privacy is or does and why would I want to be notified? I was trying to see if I can set the number of rings before voicemail picks up. I couldn't find the option I was looking for, instead I found this and I have no idea what it does. I am away from home and don't have the manual with me.

I am having a hard time deciding for my HTC Hero.
Google Voice
Pro's
Transcribed Voicemails (Usually not that good, but a neat feature to have)
Saved Voicemails that don't have to be deleted after a couple weeks
E-mail or SMS notifications (I don't use it, but my voicemail app doesn't do that)
Con's
Wastes battery with notifications and having to download Voicemails to listen to them.
Stock Voicemail Application
Pro's
Doesn't waste battery life for having notifications of a new voicemail.
Implemented into the phone automatically
Instant notification without wasting battery, etc.
Con's
Lacks a lot of features
Not useful at all.
I can disable Google Voice whenever, which isn't the problem. But, I am having a hard time deciding.
