Sprint HTC Hero :: Get New Update On Custom ROM?
Dec 5, 2009
I have MoDaCo 1.1 and I can't update my firmware? I do all the normal steps settings, about phone, update and it checks for an update, but finds nothing and I know I am running on the old 1.29.651.1 How do I get the update online or another way from my phone?

might be a dumb question, but I don't wanna do the fw update on my fresh 2.1.2 hero, if it's going to break root. I'm guessing not but want to be sure.

ok, so i just updated my HTC Hero to the new 2.1. So far i am enjoying the updated UI however, i have noticed some changes, for instance, before i could easily assign ringtones to anyone now when i try to assign tones that are saved on my sd card to specific contacts it will not allow me to do so. The phone now only lets me set a default tone which can be any tone (sd card or factory) but all contacts have this tone & i cannot assign specific tones for certain contacts.

I have a Sprint HTC Hero 2.1 Update 6. Today, I installed universal one-click root app onto my phone from this link : [APP] [ROOT] 1-click root for N1 (Latest ver: 1.6.2 beta 5) - xda-developers and I believe I got my phone rooted. Now, I am hoping to get custom recovery image installed on my phone so that I can nandroid back up my current stock 2.1 based image before installing CM6. I was hoping to try clockworkmod through ROM Manager app. Does this image work in HTC Hero ? If not, is there any other recovery image that I should try for my 2.1 hero ?

Please Post all Sprint Hero update rumors here. This not to be confused with the " Official 2.1 Thread. I would also sugest to our ever so patient moderators to move any post of this nature to this thread. Let's clean up the forum and when the update is out out we can get rid of all this with one flush.

I searched up Android 2.1 on Google and I Found a website with Sprint Hero - 2.1 leaked! "Website: Sprint HTC Hero Android 2.1 Upgrade Leaked" Rumors have been flying around the web about Spring releasing an official Android 2.1 upgrade for their HTC Hero mobile phone. The dates for the Android 2.1 upgrade for the Spring HTC Hero have been speculated to be either on April 29th, and others simply by the end of April. But according to BlogsDNA.com, hackers at XDA Developers forum have leaked a Sprint HTC Hero test ROM marked:
RUU_Hero_C_Sprint_2.20.651.1_signed_test The stands for Radio Unit Update, and is a common package that HTC phones of all kinds use, from Windows Mobile Phones to Android Roms.Without a doubt, the remaining days in the month of April building up to be full of high profile mobile phone announcements.Expected this month (April) are the HTC Incredible and Nexus One at Verizon, and now this, the Sprint HTC Hero Android 2.1 upgrade.
Rumors were also spreading about a possible iPhone / Verizon deal being announced. We ve already had the iPhone OS 4.0 announcement. And of course, I would be remiss to leave out the iPad announcement from Apple.

We can now do partial flashes with the CL14 SBL.... If you have not had the CL14 official update yet, you can follow these steps to get it:
Remember... THIS WILL PUT THE CL14 BOOTLOADER ON YOUR PHONE!
What you need:
Sprints Update Utility
1. Create a datatool back-up.
2. Download and install Sprints Update Utility found above.
3. Run the program (now called SWUpdater) and follow all the directions until it says "Flash Downloading Complete".
Once you have the official CL14 update on your phone, or if you already had it, and you would like to flash SDX/Joey's Kernel (and Max's Recovery), follow the steps below.
What you need:
CL14 official update
An SDX/Joey's Kernel
Max's Recovery
1. Create a datatool back-up... (Although you most likely wont need it if you are just flashing a kernel.... But JUST in case, you should create a datatool back-up if you aren't confident that you wont wipe your data!)
2. After downloading and installing Sprints Update Utility, go into the binary folder (C:Program FilesSamsung ElectronicsSWUpgradeModelsBinary) and move the CL14 file to a safe place, MAKE SURE IT IS NO LONGER IN THE BINARY FOLDER.
3. Find the Kernel you want to flash and put it in the binary folder.
Note: Now you should only have one file in the binary folder (the custom kernel). Also make sure that if the file you are putting into the binary folder says 7zip or winrar, extract it!! If you dont you will get the message "Cannot access bin folder!", and you will not be able to start the download.
4. On your desktop there should be a program named SWUpgrade. Run the program and follow all of the steps through the end. After every thing finishes successfully, you will end up with STOCK CL14, this includes the CL14 SBL, along with the custom kernel you put in the binary folder (you are root).
5. Double check that everything worked by going into Settings-About Phone, under BaseBand version you should see S:M900.8.0S.CL14, under Kernel version= 2.6.27 moment(at)momentdev, under Build number= Joey's name (or any other developer who's kernel you put in the binary folder).
6. Repeat steps 1-4, putting Max's recovery in the binary folder instead of the kernel.
7. You're all set.
(If you happen to want to flash one of Zefie's kernels, repeat steps 1-4 also.)
It wasn't a great thing to get the CL14 update before, because it was hard to obtain root. But now with Sprints Update Utility, and all the new kernels, we are able to get root with the CL14 SBL easily.

I went through all the troubleshooting steps in the "Update Available From Sprint" thread, making sure I was on v1.29.651.1, yada yada. Worked on this for a week and a half. Spoke with Sprint, spoke with HTC, no luck. Going to firmware update always reported NO UPDATE AVAILABLE.
Took the phone back to Best Buy and demanded an exchange. After receiving the new phone, went to try to firmware update, it showed that one was available. I asked for my old battery back since it was charged fully so that I could do the update. Put my old battery back in, went to update, NO UPDATE AVAILABLE!
Turns out it was my battery? Put the new one back in and the update was successful. I had scoured the net before but did not notice anyone with this particular issue. I

How many of us Sprint Hero users are actually rooted with a custom ROM? What ROM are you using? I'm using Fresh 0.6b. Great ROM and is regularly asked for feedback and updated accordingly. Really speeds up the phone a lot.

I have a fairly new HTC Hero.Came across this forum a few days ago, hoping to learn a few tricks about the android phone.I am currently stuck as to whether root my phone and load the custom ROM, or get the official update.I have gone through the forum and read that many people have been getting errors regarding the update. My phone is purchased from Orange, but I have no idea of how to tell if it is branded or not. There is no Orange stickers at the back of my phone or any orange logo on my home page.So if I was to do the official update, do I use the standard one or the Orange one?

I believe I've just rooted my phone, but haven't put a custom ROM on yet. I've got a few questions about it:
1.) What Sprint apps can be removed without affecting other things? (such as weather widget)
2.) Is there a way to eliminate some of the boot screens (especially the Sprint one) without putting a custom ROM on?
3.) Will root alone, and the removal of those worthless apps speed up my phone a bit? (especially the occasional lag in bringing the notification screen down)
4.) Can these changes be undone one by one rather than doing a complete recovery?

Im still trying to get a good feel for what i am doing before i go and root my phone and flash a custom rom. my last real question is i see so many different custom roms people are using. where can i find all these to put on my phone. also i am on 2.1 do i have to use a 2.something custom rom or can i use any custom rom. im at about an 95% user ability as far as using my phone and computer. i have never hacked/ flashed/ altered anything like a phone or computer or video game system. i have always just used as is. i wanna try this becuase i have read i can go back and go stock on this if i cant do it or dont like the results.

I have been around these forums since the Hero came out. I was lurking then and became a member when I bought a Hero 2 weeks later. I enjoy my Hero although yes it is slow at times. I love watching my SprintTV on my phone and listening to Pandora. I have read that if I but a custom ROM on and SetCPU and a few other goodies, I can speed the phone up a lot and have a better experience. I also hear that I can tether without having to use PDANet.
1. Can I still use Sprint TV?
2. Is the speed boost really worth installing a Custom ROM
3. What is the benefit of just Rooting the phone and keeping the Stock ROM?
4. I see this voids the warranty, but if you put the stock software back on the phone, does sprint ever know that you rooted if you take it in for service?
5. And can some of you that have done this process list out the top 5 favorite features you got out of this. Makes these actual results, not just what you heard about.

I realize that this is a totally newbie question but here goes. I've rooted my Hero and now I want to try out a custom rom. My question is this, once I flash the custom rom and it boots up, does the phone work automatically just as when I updated from 1.5 to 2.1? I mean the phone functions, not the android operating system. As I said, this may be a silly question but I haven't seen it actually addressed in the forums.

How easy is it to unroot a phone after trying a custom ROM? One of the advantages to the plan I've got is free insurance on the phone, but rooting it will, of course, void that.

I just rooted my phone and I know you can download icon packs and use better cut to specify what icon you want for a specific application, I was just wondering if there is an easier way to just load the icon pack and it will somehow replace the current default icons?
I also was wondering if there is any way to "theme" the notification bar. I would really like to make it transparent, but I don't want to use open home or ahome. I am sure there is an image sitting somewhere that I can change? I just rooted my phone a few hours ago.

You can now create a customised ROM containing only the parts you required - click here to read more about the MoDaCo Custom Custom ROM online kitchen!
MCR now optionally includes Wavesecure in ROM, allowing you to lock / locate / wipe your device remotely in the event of loss and be notified if the SIM is changed. The application cannot be uninstalled by a thief and we are actively working with Wavesecure to ensure that in a forthcoming release, your settings will survive a hard reset!
This ROM is based on the updated 'MR' ROM release series (together with my own optimisations) for the best possible performance! The ROM is packaged as a core version with optional add on packs.
Included in the 'core'
- Built with my new MCR build process which reduces size and boost speed of the ROM
- Rooted with 'adb remount' permission and superuser APK
- A2SD included (fully automatic - thanks cyanogen!) - create a EXT2 partition as your second partition to use. dalvik-cache remains on device.
- Added Jbed Java
- Added Dropbear SSH running by default, check 'About' screen for password (port 2222). You can now remove this by running /system/bin/removedropbear.sh
- Added Notes app from Dragon
- Added Spare Parts (run it and switch the 2 animation types to 'fast' for an even better experience!)
- Added WiFi Status indicator, with kind permission of Andrew Schwimmer
- Added busybox 1.15.3 with Droid Explorer support
- Added nano 2.09 - text editor for use in shell mode
- Added parted and sqlite tools
- Added terminfo and settings to boot.img to allow nano etc. use
- Added files required for Debian linux including loxley's updated bootdeb script
- Added all 4 available HTC widgets
- Moved Quickoffice to data partition to allow easy uninstall
- Moved Google Maps and Google Voice Search to data partition to allow easy update
- Deleted 'Learn More' application
- Silenced boot sound (it's still there and can be reactivated with a file edit)
- You can now check your MoDaCo Custom ROM (MCR) version from the about menu
Included in main 'enhanced' add on pack
- Added Business Card Scanner
- Added 'Plurk' client
- Added WAP browser
Other optional add on packs (apply as normal update zips)
- 'WaveSecure' add on pack (puts Wavesecure in ROM - it is no longer in core)
- 'Boot Sounds' add on pack (restores boot sounds)
- 'Hebrew Fonts' add on pack (installs hebrew fonts)
Recommended applications (available from the market)
- More Locale for setting non english Locales

11/Jan 2.0 - MoDaCo Custom ROM for Sprint CDMA Hero - Android @ MoDaCo
ENSURE YOU DO A NANDROID BACKUP SO YOU CAN 'ROLL BACK' IF REQUIRED!
Please note that first boot may take a little while, especially if you have a lot of apps on your A2SD partition. Be patient! If you want a real clean start or you have issues with your existing A2SD installed apps when you boot, you need to wipe your EXT2 partition on SD too by executing 'adb shell rm -r /system/sd/app', 'adb shell rm -r /system/sd/app-private' and 'adb shell reboot'
The ROM is in an update.zip format for installation via the custom recovery image.
For the complete newbies, these are the steps you need to take with a 'virgin' Hero:
- Download and install (via rooting) the patched recovery image (step by step guide to follow)
- Download this custom ROM, and copy it to your SD card
- Enter the recovery image (if you're not in it already) by powering on while pressing 'home'
- Select 'nandroid backup' from the menu to do a backup
- If you copied the custom rom as update.zip, select 'apply sdcard:update.zip', else select the option below.
- all done
Feedback / feature requests welcome! This ROM is posted in multiple places - although I try to provide support everywhere the ROM is posted, of course you will receive the quickest response at MoDaCo.
Finally, if you like the MoDaCo Custom ROMs, consider supporting MoDaCo by visiting the subscriptions page and upgrading your account.
