Why out of the box does my fascinate currently with absolutely NO programs running use 290/325 of my RAM? This does not seem right to me!
First of all congratulations everybody. I am soooo excited for each and every one of you. Seriously, I have a big smile on my face because I know that excitement, that joy you all are feeling. You won't be putting your phone down for days, I GUARANTEE IT! You guys seriously just purchased the most kick ass Android device, along with the rest of the Galaxy S phones!
The Vibrant and Captivate users are watching closely. Samsung has promised us a GPS optimization, and presumably your Epic and now Fascinate already has it. So you guys are our life line right now.
For those of you who will be testing out your GPS in the next few days, I'd like to make a few comments, so that we can get accurate GPS testing, to determine if the phone is actually using satellites like it should, or depends instead heavily on less accurate cell phone towers to determine your location, which means the GPS is still busted on these phones.
Okay, so here it goes. When testing your GPS, "Use Wireless Locations" should be turned off. Settings>location & security>Use wireless networks...make sure its UNCHECKED.
Read the note right under it, it says "See location in applications(such as Maps) using wireless networks."
If you put a check mark next to this, and turn this ON, then how will you ever know if the phone is functionally using the satellites. This is the big question with the phone, can it use and lock onto satellites or is Samsung hoping we use less accurate cell towers. Samsung hopes you have this on. I ask that you keep this unchecked, this is the only way to truly test the Satellite usage.
Further, by checking this, you are allowing Google to collect location data, even when no applications are running, they say its anonymous, but you never know.
So uncheck "Use Wireless Networks," restart your phone, make sure this is still unchecked, power up Google Maps, and go for a good long drive. Then please share your real world results. Including, how quickly it located you, was the location correct, how wide of a blue circle is there around your location, did the phone ever drop the GPS signal, etc. No 2 min drives, you really need to drive around a lot to dependably test this.
You can also download "GPS Test" from the Android Market, it will show you how many satellites your phone views, versus how many satellites are locked in. You need 4 LOCKED on satellites to get a true 3D positional lock that includes x,y,z,t. GPS test also shows your accuracy in ft, up in the upper right corner. Good accuracy is anything less than 10 ft. I have phones that get 5ft accuracy, the best accuracy I can get with my Vibrant is 40ft. Please report this number also. If you have time, upload a screen shot of your GPS test, or just take a pic of your phone running the GPS test, upload it and share your results.
You can also use the built in native GPS test. It is virtually the same as the GPS TEST program above, it's just not a pretty visual interface.
Go to your phones dialer, as if you are making a phone call, and dial in *#1472365# or if that doesn't work try *#*#1472365#*#*Then click on "get position test."
This test will show you your longitude and latitude, you can then enter this into Google maps to see how accurately it located you. It gives you accuracy in meters, convert to feet by multiplying the number given in meters by 3.28, you will now have your accuracy in ft.
The native built in test will show you have many satellites it has in view, the satellites that it actually locks onto will have an asterisk next to it. Please report both these numbers. Remember you need 4 locked on satellites for true precise 3D positioning.
I'm really interested to hear from prior smart-phone Android users, because these users will be able to make a direct comparison of the GPS to prior phones.
I am new to android and just got a Fascinate. Love it so far compared to my BB Storm2. What programs are consindered bloatware. I bought system app remover and removed bing, VCAST but what else can I remove and aside from taking up space does it do anything else.
View 4 Replies View RelatedWhen my Epic boots off a fresh restart I have approximately 140M of Ram available but over the next day for so it drops to as low as 60M and I will notice sometimes when i kill apps with ATK it kills 22 apps and then it will raise my RAM up to ~120. It seems that when my ram runs lows it shuts off my live wallpaper and reverts to the standard. My question is why do all these programs load and eat up the RAM when i have never used them. IE media hub, amazon mp3 , qik etc etc they all just start on their own running in the background. Is there anyway to get them to stop loading and is killing all of them at once a bad idea?
View 1 Replies View RelatedAfter pretty much a day of doing nothing on the phone except a few texts (GPS and WIFI were on all day), I got home and started playing with the phone. It got SOOOOOOOOOO slow (and I'm not nitpicking, I'm talking WinMo-hang-slowness....believe me, I understand a little bit of lag, but this was insane!) so I checked the Applications and Manage Applications. Now I know everyone's first answer is "get a task manager, etc" but I am not going to give into that, because I believe it'll cause more problems, or at least potential for more problems, by adding more variables to the equation if something goes wrong. I was looking at some of the applications that seem to be using quite a bit of RAM/ROM and had a question for the community:
The biggest 3 applications were:
Mail - 34.80 MB (34.25 MB Data + 556 KB Cache) and using 6.78 MB Ram
Contacts Storage - 4.09 MB total (all data) and 11.56 MB RAM
com.android.providers.calendar - 2.78 MB total (all data) and 11.02 RAM
What does everyone else's look like? I know I'm not going to be touching the Contacts Storage or com.android.providers.calendar stuff, but what happens if I clear my data and cache in mail? I have it hooked to an Exchange Server at work. What exactly gets cleared, and will that help with any of my lag? Do these numbers look pretty representative of everyone else's?
Simple question. Is there an app out there, that is NOT a battery hog, and keeps services off...OR is there a way to get rid of the bloatware on the SF WITHOUT rooting?
View 10 Replies View RelatedI got my Fascinate yesterday and today idk if its just me but today I noticed when scroll the notification screen down, I see a band of unusual green but when I scroll up to my home screen nothing happens. I tried dead pixel test and nothing showed up. Is it a software issue? or a hardware issue?

Is their some way to check which programs that are running? which apps etc? On my windows mobile phone I had a shortcut for this but on my hero I don't see it anywhere?
View 4 Replies View RelatedIt seems I have multiple programs that will start on their own and run in the background. The main ones are mp3 store, voicemail, sprint nav, sprint tv and qik. I haven't even ran those programs yet, but they're still starting up.
I went so far as to download ATK and kill them...only to see them running again 5 minutes later. I tried to put all the settings the same as what I had on my hero, but these running in the background are driving me nuts for some reason.
I am constantly finding programs running on my phone, regardless of what I've used. For instance, "Easy tether", which I never use while in town, would come up as "running". "Where's my droid", which have not used since installing 2 months ago... or "Voice dialer? What makes things run, when they haven't been used?
View 12 Replies View RelatedI wasn't able to find anything on this after a cursory search, but it seems like my music player sometimes kicks in when the screen is off and the phone is stowed in my pocket. I can't seem to recreate the behavior predictably by playing with any buttons, though, so I'm not sure what's triggering it.
I have the new HTC Hero on Sprint.
Any ideas what might be causing this behavior, or how I can stop it? It's pretty embarrassing, and I'm nervous to go into a theatre with the phone at all now, even when it is on silent. Even short of the music player, more often the phone will wake from screen-off with some other page up front (not the main home page, but one of the other views like the home page, the ones you get to by flicking right or left from the home page...
It seems like whenever I play around on the phone for a bit and the go to close my apps with TaskPanel the following are always running even though I didn't touch them:
Alarm Clock
Corporate Calendar
Calendar
Settings
Messaging (even though I have not used it at all)
and one other that isn't showing up right now but was something like mobile.? or
Some of these I don't care if they're running (I assume the Calendar is running since I need it to run for my Google calendar widget to work), but why is Alarm Clock and Corporate calendar always running? Is there a way to turn these off?
Is there an app out there that will not just stop a program from starting up but from running at all? I have to continually kill progs like Footprints (or something), Amazon mp3 store, etc. I'd like to streamline the phone and only have programs running that are essential.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm using the free Advanced Task Killer app save as much battery life as possible.
After I "kill" all the apps, the same programs tend to run all over again (Alarm Clock, Corporate Calender, Settings, etc). How do I block programs that I don't use but tend to open continually?
I have found that if I am trying to run Eclipse with the G1 connected (vis USB), logcat will only output info from programs running on the phone - not when I run code on the emulator. If I disconnect the phone and then run the emulator version, logcat provides the desired output.
I also have now discovered that if I connect the G1, the SD Card on the emulator shows the contents of the G1 SD Card, whether I am running code on the emulator or the phone. This was a little confusing as I expected the AVD to control the SD Card when I run a virtual version, not the attached 'real' phone.
What is the best way to reboot the device? I have done a shutdown and a battery pull, but when it comes back up, I still see quite a few apps running from a fresh state. Is this normal?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI don't know if it's my phone or what but when I look up the Other Usage on my phone, it shows it "Running" more than 2/3 of the time. And on Network Usage, "Android System" and "Media" use a great deal of the phone as well.I think this might have to do with my "android.process.acore" crashing every once in a while when it's asleep. Based on everyone's feedback I might have to return the Moment for a third time.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI was screwing around with battery usage today and here is what I found as the bottom line. Now this doesn't mean this is the same for you, but I'm sure you all know that. I changed nothing on the evo besides Gtalk automatically signing me in. (No skimping if you would) and I was at a golf club all day yesterday and had perfect signal strength. My EVO went 23hrs on one charge with decently heavy use. When I went back home (bad signal, 1 bar, no 3G) my phone's battery lasted just about 13hrs. Therefore I think TWS is one of the biggest battery culprits. Hence why if you complain to Sprint, they send you a free Air Ave like they did for me and many others.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm wondering about apps that are a little more than battery power monitors. I'd like something that will show me the apps that are running and taking up the most memory and causing the biggest power drains on my phone.
Something that would log this so I could look it over during the week and get an overall view and make decisions on what to keep and what to erase.
I'm thinking something that would show me what apps I used, how long they were running, how much memory they took up, how much battery power was used, etc.
Is there such an app out there? I'm wanting to look at the differences between the free apps and paid apps to see if it makes a difference also.
I'm running a Sprint GN2 currently 4.1.2. I haven't gotten the update yet.
I migrated from Mororola RAZR (XT910) to Alcatel One Touch Idox X (6040D) on both phones I have the same applications, but on the Alcatel it happens again and again that out of nowhere suddenly Streaming media starts to download a huge amount of data, until I restart the phone.
-Google backup, location, photo sync is OFF
This behavior happens even if the Apps such as IMDB, YOUTUBE, POWERAMP are force closed. I used Watch dog 3G so My Data Manager, but both of them just show "streaming media" as the process eating the data. As Youtube was noted in System data consumption I could set there Background data limitation, which worked a little bit, but the issue continues, like some other application would try to take over YT misbehavior
Yesterday the phone "streamed" like this 6GB of data on WIFI and almost 700 MB on mobile, last month with XT910, I lasted with 700 MB mobile data for more than 2 weeks.
how the memory works on my orginial motorola droid (2.2). When I open the running services tab I see this on the bottom:
Other: 54MB in 3 Avail:19MB+45MB in 7
I'm wondering if someone can explain what this means. I assume this is all coming out of the 256MB of Ram the droid has? I was also installing app's and got a memory low warning aftering firefox beta that was 14MB in size. I gather that almost all the apps do not support installing to the SD card yet if ever. So of like the 100 apps I have installed is it likley that they are all taking up room of the RAM of the 256MB? I'm also wondering if there is a good app that shows you how much of your RAM is full with apps, so you know when you need to uninstall some etc. Like you are using 200MB out of 256MB or whatever.
I have a weird problem where I cannot run aapt from an sbt command as well as from the shell.
I run this command: sbt update package-debug
And everything hums along until I get this error: java.io.IOException: Cannot run program "/home/egervari/Programs/android-sdk-linux_x86/platforms/android-7/tools/aapt": java.io.IOException: error=2, No such file or directory
So I try running it manually, just for the heck of it: egervari@ken:~/Programs/android-sdk-linux_x86/platforms/android-7/tools$ ./aapt bash: ./aapt: No such file or directory
This is pretty weird because it's right there:

I have a rooted Fascinate. Using ES file explorer I was able to view system folders and found the system media files containing ringtones, notification tone, etc. However, I can not edit the files there or paste new files in there. I cannot find the system folder when I connect the fascinate to a computer. I tried showing "hidden files" but the folders still would not show up.
What I want to do is add my downloaded ringtones into the system media folder so that I can use those ringtones without having those ringtones appear in my music player. Another post tried to deal with this issue of the music player recognizing ringtones and notification tones, but no one could provide an actual solution to the problem. If I could move ringtones from the media folder on the SD to card to the media folder in the system folder, this would solve the problem.
Can anybody access the system folders in a manner that I can add files to the folders.
EDITED: PROBLEM SOLVED.
With the help given below, I came up with a solution, and have pasted instructions directly below.
Here are the steps I did in case any one else is interested.
Once your phone is rooted, it's pretty simple.
1)Download Root Explorer from the Market. Root explorer will give you the ability to edit folders/files that normally can't be edited, ie read and write permission as opposed to read only.
2)Using Root Explorer (make sure in top left of program it says "mounted as r/w"), copy any ringtone, notification file, .ogg file, .mp3 file, etc that you have made or downloaded, by selecting sdcard folder and navigating to the location of your tones, long pressing the file of interest, and select copy. (You can even long press on the folder and copy the whole folder of tones).
3)Still using Root Explorer, back out of the SD folder, and find the folder called "system". Navigate to system/media/audio/"ringtones" or "notifications" . Click the paste button at the bottom of the screen (which should have appeared as soon as you copied your file/folder). The file/folder will now be in your system's tone folder.
4)You must power down and power back up your phone before the phone will recognize these newly added tones.
5)Either delete the tone files from your SD card, or put a .nomedia file into the folder to remove them from the SF's media player.
Has any one try sending photos via email with out hanging in the sending folder? It only sends them when I do a battery pull and once in a wile it will send.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI downloaded wireless tether, the newest version and the two previous versions. I install the apk using the fascinates file manager. The program appears to run fine on the phone, and says 0.4kb download and .1kb upload. I've used two different laptops, one with windows 7, and one with XP to try to connect to the phone. I can find Android Tether as an available network for both computers. However, when I click to connect, both computers cannot connect. When I perform a diagnostic test, windows reports there is a problem with the access point, but cannot fix it.
