Samsung Captivate :: Can't Swap SIM - Or Will Lose Unlimited Data Plan
Aug 17, 2010
From what AT&T tells me I can't swap SIM (with an adapter) back and forth or I will lose my unlimited data plan. Is this true? I find that incredibly annoying if so. I want to be able to use whichever phone I want at any given time.

i need to get some info from you guys. to all who had the unlimited data plan w/ ATT before purchasing this phone, were you all able be grandfathered in to the unlimited data plan or were you forced to take on the new data plan which is limited? ive spoken to several ATT reps and was given mixed information regarding this matter. unfortunately i had to take on the new limited data plan with 2GBs. please give me your comments and insights.

I went to private AT&T dealer to upgrade my phone, contract has been renewed for 2 years, and that guy changed my unlimited data plan (it was $15/mo too) to the 200MB one. He said my previous unlimited data plan was not for smartphones (actually I did not use AT&T branded phone before Captivate, I bought SonyEricsson X1 for my self), if I chose to upgrade the unknown AT&T phone to captivate, they have to change my data plan to the 200MB limit one. Is his explanation true? I want my unlimited data plan.

Is anyone aware if Verizon sticking with the Unlimited plan or will they do the tiered data plan alike AT&T? Will the X upgraders be burdered with this? How much data do you use? What is average data usage?I averaged: 6/01 - 6/07: 602,627 KB. (Got my Incredible on June 1st this is funny to me)5/08 - 5/31: 411, 534 KB. (Storm 2 I guess doesn't have any love)I'm interested to see how my past month panned out when I see the statement.

I'm new to AF, but I've been lurking here for about 2 months. Did my homework and ended up buying the Samsung Moment and Samsung Exclaim for my girlfriend and I with a new Sprint contract. We're both thoroughly pleased with our phones and our plan. But I do have a question that I haven't seen addressed here. I jumped through all the hoops and was finally able to install PdaNet 2.17 on both my computer and phone. I tested it a little after getting it connected and was pretty well pleased with the performance of both the phone and the software. However, I will not be tethering my phone again until I can find out whether or not Sprint will bill me for it.As far as what I can tell from online sources the data plan truly is unlimited and Sprint cannot tell for a fact if my phone is tethered or not, although the bandwidth usage will be significantly higher during tethering sessions. BUT, a friend of mine informed me that Sprint knows when you're tethering and will charge you as if it is a separate line or however they can. All I heard was that it would cost me.I'm sorry for the long post, but I included the details for clarity's sake and as an insight into the kind of posts the AF community can expect from it's friendly neighborhood HampMan. Any input to the subject matter will be greatly appreciated and I thank you all in advance.

There's been a lot of talk about this lately, so when I was on the line with a Verizon rep I thought I'd ask. Granted Verizon reps aren't always the most knowledgeable so take this for what it's worth.I asked about the data plan and she confirmed that it's the Air cards that are limited to 5GB. Currently there's no limit for phones. I then asked about tethering. She told me that since the Droid doesn't do tethering there are no limits. I inquired about third party apps that provide tethering and she responded saying that because those apps are not provided by Verizon they are not considered tethering, rather falling under the data category and are therefore unlimited.

Was just comparing the two data plans. The T&C is here:About Us Facts-at-a-Glance Acceptable use policy: Acceptable Use Policy They are listing it as "Unlimited Data Usage" plan and with my discount it's $35 a month.3) VOIP is mentioned as an acceptable protocol! This really surprised me.

As many news sources have indicated Verizon is set to eliminate the unlimited data plan in the next month or so.Will this change allow current Verizon customers to get out of their contract without a penalty?Source: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/07/21/verizon-data-plan-changes_n_654481.htmlVia Verizon (Customer Agreement)Can Verizon Wireless Change This Agreement or My Service? We may change prices or any other term of your Service or this agreement at any time, but we'll provide notice first, including written notice if you have Postpay Service. If you use your Service after the change takes effect, that means you're accepting the change. I was planning on dumping iPhone and get the captivate. They would not allow the unlimited plan. They said I have to keep the iPhone. Now thats a good reason to dump AT&T and go to Sprint or Verizon.
Any ideas or work arounds so I can keep the unlimited data. Any heavy users on the $25 plan? How is that working out?

I have an unlocked captivate. I have a German T-D1 pay-as-you-go sim that I've used many times in unlocked GPS phones. Now I have an AT&T captivate and wonder whether GPS or other apps will work. Does GPS require a data plan to work? If so I'll have to figure out whetted I can add this to my T-D1 plan. This will also answer my question about whether using the Captivate for navigation in the US needs a data plan to work.

I was looking at my upgrade options and total pricing with regard to the Captivate. When I added the phone as an upgrade, not only did it not make me choose a data plan, it didn't even give me a choice to pick a data plan (at the moment I have just minutes and texts). Is this an error on the ATT system or you can get the phone and the data plan is only set up once you use the phone?
Because what I am thinking is upgrading 2 lines on my family plan - my line with an iPhone which requires data when you purchase the phone, and the Samsung on the line that will not get Data. I will only use one phone (the Samsung on my line) and sell the iPhone brand new in box. Will that work or will ATT realize when I only have one phone in use on my plan even though I 'upgraded/renewed' two lines?

So I was about to pick up a Captivate today until I spoke with the sales rep about my data plan. I am still using the 1st gen iPhone with the unlimited edge plan. He told me that there was no way for me to use the Captivate with the old plan unless I upgrade to the new ones.
I remember reading online awhile back that used the upgrade path from the 1st iPhone to any of the 3g iPhones, which makes it sound like he is BS'ing. I don't know if it still holds true for the Captivate though.

Well, right now, I have an iPhone 2G with a 20 dollar data plan that also includes 200 texts. It's part of a family plan, and I'm probably going to go Samsung Captivate or iPhone 4 in a few days. My questions include
1. Can I just use the 20 dollar data plan for the iPhone with that phone, like, without them knowing? Any serious consequences involved with it?
2. Similar to the first question, can I just use the non-smartphone data plan, which is 15 bucks a month, and use that with the Captivate? Would they know which phone is using it?
3. Once I switch to limited data, like 200 MB or 2 GB, can I switch back to unlimited?
I don't pay my own bills, parents do, but don't want to put on an extra 10 or 15 dollars a month right now, just for data, when I could just continue using whatever I'm using.

Should I go with the 200MB DataPro or 2GB DataPlus plan? I want to get the 200mb plan but fear going over the limit. I will only browse a few site like sportscenter. Wont be updating status' cause I don't have a facebook. Was wondering if I just do everything that consumes major data at home, which has WiFi I should be good right? On a second note how much data does using GPS every once in awhile?

I saw a commercial today for the Xperia X10 on Rogers, which said it included "Unlimited Social Networking". Just wondering if anyone, like me bought the phone in April, and knows if this is included in their Voice + Data plan? I'm currently on the $50 Voice and Data, and http://www.rogers.com/web/content/social-networking shows that its pre-bundled in the 3 plans.
Or if this is something we have to contact them to add, or worse, something we missed out on because we bought the phone too early for their liking.

I wanna buy a Samsung Galaxy S, but I need to know if it's economically feasible to run an Android phone without unlimited 3G plan. The reason is I live in a country where unlimited 3G is ridiculously expensive, so I'm still limping along on EDGE. I don't use the Web on my phone too much so that's suits me OK. PC sync is far, far more important to me.What I usually do on my smartphone is:
- talk
- contacts
- calendar
- video
- music
- FM radio
- SOME very basic internet surfing and email
- GPS/Google maps
My last smartphone was a WinMo-powered Samsung Omnia, which was stolen. I figured since I'm getting a new phone, I might as well get one with a new OS. Can I make the switch to Android without burning a hole in my pocket? Will I lose too much functionality and might be better off on WinMo or Symbian or iOS4?

Okay, I downloaded Shazam the day after I got my Evo. A week or two later, when my buddy got his Evo, I told him to download it. Apparently, within that week, Shazam went from a free application to 5 queries per month unless you upgrade to a paid version. I still have the unlimited application on my phone. However, it is prompting me to upgrade. If I upgrade, will I lose my unlimited usage?

Alright, so I recently purchased the droid and I am looking to put in on Boost CDMA for their unlimited plan.I can pull the PRL off of a boost phone that I am using right now (I think) and have an esn of an old boost phone can I can use for a switch so it is recognized in the database. I own both phones so I don't see any issue with this. My question is; is rooting the phone necessary for this to work. I would think so, but I am not sure. I have seen people flash the droid over to cricket, virgin, page plus, metro pcs, so why not boost mobile? I am just looking for some feedback from people more knowledgeable than me. This is my first android phone, so I am quite ignorant in all things android. I flashed an HTC TP2 over to boost, so I am hoping I can do the same with the droid.

I thought that we were allowed 300 MB of data roaming without running into overages. I checked my bill today online and it said I use 981 KB out of 0 KB of data available while roaming, but it said I was charged $0.00 for this.

I got another phone and gave my wife the Behold 2 without data plan. I signed in using my SIM card, then put her SIM in and signed in. So we can dowload apps using wifi (or do I just THINK it's using wifi?) and she gets her gmail. But no apps access the web and can't browse the web.

since launch day, Sept. 9. Just a heads up for anyone upgrading or opening up a new account to a smart phone. It's up to you, but you just might want to ask and confirm at the Point of Sale if you are indeed on the unlimited data plan.
Received an interesting text msg from Verizon. Turns out my balance is $494.90. Evidently, I've never had a data plan and I've been getting charged for every single Mb.
*611 and CS immediately recognized what happened. I was never put on a data plan at the POS. It's as simple and complicated as that. $340 in data charges. She put me on the $30 unlimited data and credited me the data charges minus the $30 I would've paid this billing cycle.
No big deal except the long wait time over the phone and for some reason it took her another five minutes to do whatever was needed to fix it. Also, it has to be "cleared" first because "of the size of the credit". She'll call me back Sunday(she's off Friday and Saturday... good for her) after 1pm to confirm and tell me it went through.

(We'll see if this gets any votes for dumb question of the week.)I don't have a data plan, nor do I want one. I knew the GPS was problematic on the Galaxy S when I bought it, but I didn't really foresee much GPS use. I'm curious to play with it, but don't know how much I'll actually need it.Am I right in assuming that the basic GPS is separate from 3G in that I can use it to find my location? I understand that overlaying my location on Google Maps needs 3G (unless I'm using WiFi). However, is it also possible to overlay my location on off-line, cached maps like those in MapDroyd and Maps (-)?Also, what privileges/settings do I need for the GPS to communicate with these maps and show my location?

One of the major reasons I purchased a smartphone was to be able to chat with certain facebook friends in realtime no matter where I am. The AIM app seems to be exactly what I'm looking for.My question is, I have unlimited data, but only 500 texts per month. When conversing with someone on facebook on the AIM app, would that be free or is it charging me a text per message? On a side note, I would also like to be able to send texts to a friend in Europe, but texts don't seem to make it there from the US. I just found this article about sending free texts through AIM, but it's two years old and related to iPhone:Send Free SMS Messages Using the AIM iPhone App.Anyone know if this will work on Android and be free on my end?

So I just spent half an hour drooling - err, browsing - in the AT&T store. I had just about talked myself into an Aria, but I love the size of the Captivate. I was thinking of going to BB and getting them to price match the AT&T store, but my line still has a couple of months to go before it's eligible for an upgrade (because my dad used mine last year ... he swaps phones every 4 months since no one else ever gets a new phone until they're falling apart ... not that I'm bitter). But 2 other lines have upgrades (and the family is okay with me using one of them). The AT&T store was willing to do it that way, but will BB do that too?

I've got no data plan from t-mobile and despite this have been able to access gmail via the gmail app through 3G.Yesterday I was forced to preform a hard reset (volume down+call+end call). After the reset I connected to my Wifi and logged into the Google Network as I did when I initially got my phone.I've found that I can access everything as before including Weather Channel App, My T-Mobile, as well as Sync Calender via 3G, but whenever I try to Sync or Refresh Gmail or Contacts it fails to connect. (I get "! No Connection").
