I finally got GV visual voicemail working using my carrier number as my GV number. it took 2 days of frustration.now, from what I understand, i should be able to use GV to send text/SMS messages.is that true?when i launch GV app, i don't have any options to compose messages. how is that supposed to work?

I had my number ported to Google Voice and have been using it to make and receive calls for the past two weeks. I was also using it for texts, or so I thought, but yesterday I found out (by looking at my friends phone), that after I sent him a text, my carrier's number was the one that showed up as the sender, instead of my Google Voice.
I thought Google Voice automatically used your Google Voice number for texts too? Am I doing something wrong in the middle?
I am wondering if anyone else is having problems with their Samsung Captivate sending picture messages. THEY WON'T send! This is the 2nd phone I've had because the other one was having "seizure like activity" and this is the new one I got yesterday and it STILL WILL NOT send picture messages. I tried directly from the pictur and also by creating a new message and attaching the file.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've been using Google Voice on my Env Touch for about a year now but only mainly for the sms transcriptions as the Env Touch doesn't have an app for it.
So, here's my main problem. All of my contacts are just in my phone. I don't have anyone's email address as all I do mainly is txt people or send them a message on facebook. I'm wanting to add all of my contacts to my gmail account so when I get my Incredible everything will be there. Right now my sms from GV just has the number and I actually don't know any of my friends numbers, they're just in my phone. *yes, technology can be a sort of burden at times* So I don't have a clue who the voicemail is from until I call into it. Is there any easy way of porting all these contacts from either my phone, backup assistant, or facebook? Also, do android phones take your contacts and your facebook and merge them into your gmail account?
Since I picked up my Captivate yesterday, I have been unable to send sms messages. I noticed under Messaging/Settings that the "Message Center" is not set. Could that be the problem? Could some of you take a look at what your "Message Center" is set to?

View 24 Replies View RelatedI want to be on GV 100% (voice, txt, whatever else GV provides) the problem wiht this so far is that i get duplicate text messages - which is annoying the reason for my frustration as i see it is that GV is not as integrated into the phone the same way voice calls are - when you dial out, it goes out through my GV number, not my number from my carrier now, i could send a txt to someone using google's GV widget, but the problem with that is i lose the ability to click on the Messages button in the contact's info page (see pg 36 in the manual) and see my entire text history with that client bummer however, as a result of this whole stock-message-app-draining-the-battery "thing" i've jumped onboard the handcent bandwagon turns out, handcent stores its messages in the phones database/memory/whatever so that the text history is retained and accessible via that Messages button in the contact info page! nice! now.. if only you could send OUT to GV's system through these 3rd party messaging apps (thus avoiding GVs app and its inability to save/store txt msg history in the contacts page), we would be set!
Well, today i learned that when a person sends you a txt through the GV service (ie - they send you a text to your GV number), it appears to you as a 406 area code (see here - read TuXian's post) and furthermore, you can save that number in the contact's info page and send to that person using that number its not "perfect" because its not "seamless" -- the end user has to THINK - and DO SOMETHING for this system to work which is okay for us "techies" and "enthusiasts" - but for the general public, that's not gonna cut it but it seems to work at this point either HTC needs to improve teh Sense UI to incorporate content generated in the GV widget/app, or google needs to store its data in the Hero's file structure.... but this is definitely "kludgy" and they will need to a better job if they expect to rival apple and the iphone in a meaningful and significant way (ok, where did that little rant come from!)

Since the main feature I am interested in (for now) is the visual voice mail, I was thinking of getting the option without the GV number and therefore, keeping my cell phone number. I have several questions:
1. Does this work well with the Captivate phone?
2. Is there any delay in getting the voice mails by going through GV?
3. Does this eat into my data plan at all? Currently, I am only on the 200 mb plan per month.
4. If I try to get text messages through GV, would that not use up my data plan and instead come through my Internet connection ( which could at times be free if I am in a WiFi zone)?
How do I use my voice to compose text messages?I don't see the option in my input methods.

However on the DroidX, the keyboard looks identical, but it does have the mic. Can we download a new version of swype that has this enabled. I like swype but want to be able to talk to my phone.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI have an issue on my new Captivate where the text messages don't appear in order. It seems it only sorts them by a minute time stamp versus seconds. It's not an issue if they are more than a minute apart, but if I get a text say at 4:30:01 and send a reply at 4:30:15 and get a reply back at 4:30:45, it will put my outgoing text on top followed by the 2 text I received below that. Where it should be received text, reply text, and receive text. Not sure if that made sense or not, but if you were to number them 1,2,3 in order of actual time, it's listing them in 2,1,3 order. It's not a huge deal but it's annoying to me. My iPhone did not do this. Is there a fix for this?

View 1 Replies View RelatedIve noticed that when I send a text and the phone is out of signal, it just says, "FAILED" and calls it a day. I miss my blackberry in this respect, it would wait until it DID have signal and then would automatically resend. Is there any way to set this phone up so it automatically resends when I get signal back? I do get it sometimes where it says that its saving the texts until signal is rereached, however, lets say I get one bar back, well the phone "sees" that Im getting signal, tries to send, and then fails, and then calls it a day....

View 7 Replies View RelatedI've been having an issue with area codes and text messaging. The contact's number is stored properly xxx-xxx-xxxx in the contacts. But when he sends a text, it only shows up as xxx-xxxx, so when I reply, of course, it won't send because Nebraska is now on mandatory 10 digit dialing. So then I have to compose a new message instead of just replying in the current thread.
I had this issue at first, but only with the numbers entered in as (xxx) xxx-xxxx. So I made sure to change every number to xxx-xxx-xxxx and it seemed to fix it for a while at least.
I could send mass texts with ease. Got a captivate last friday and tried to send my first today. First, it only lets me send to 10 contacts, but more importantly when I sent it the message shows up 10 times in same window. Is that normal for android or is there some way to change that and is there something better out there to send mass texts?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI used chompSMS, and after updating to their 4.6 version, I was no longer able to receive text messages. I tried everything and finally resorted to doing a factory reset, now everything is working, and I am receiving all the messages I was supposed to get during the period it wasn't working. Now that I am getting all the messages, I realize that I wasn't getting them from before the update as well. I guess chomp is not to blame.

AT&T Free Message: AT&T is providing a free update for your phone. When asked to install the update, please select OK.
Anyone else running Cognition getting these messages? I'm running 2.3 beta (something I forget). Is this just the reminder for the update they sent down a month or so ago?
Is there a way to get notification alerts if i miss a text message (like a beep 10 minutes after the initial message). I have ChompSMS. I've noticed that the battery percentage remaining doesnt match up with the battery meter. Right now, I have 26% remaining and the meter is half empty and is still blue.
