Nexus :: Touch Location Accuracy Gets Messed Up Occasionally
Jan 12, 2010
Super happy with the Nexus One just minor issue is that on occasion - and not sure what triggers it - but the touch location seems to end being below where i actually touch on the screen, which of course causes erratic typing and erroneous screen clicks. A quick cycle of the sleep/power button (not turning unit off, just sleep/blank and back on.) seems to solve the problem.Hopefully an update will resolve this issue, as it seems to be a software issue.

If I do Location.getAccuracy() I get a number of meters. Is that number a radius or a diameter? I thought it would be a radius, but Google's MyLocationOverlay uses that value as a diameter.

First of all I searched and couldn't find anything on this. Is anyone else having an issue with the screen not being very accurate? The on screen keyboard seems fine for me, but choosing something such as a link in the web browser is a little off on my phone.
An example would be opening www.wsmv.com (my local news), then trying to click on news on the left hand side...instead of news, it will choose what is below it (in this case weather). I thought it was my fat fingers, but others who have tried my phone experience the same issue. I was just wondering if it was just me? Any way to calibrate the screen?

As said in the Android Reference, the method getAccuracy() of android.location: "Returns the accuracy of the fix in meters. If hasAccuracy() is false, 0.0 is returned." But what does that mean exactly? The diameter or the radius? The Circular Error Probable (CEP), the 95-percentile or something else? I hope they are of the same type in GPS and GSM positioning. Does somebody know where these information are given into the system? As far as i know, are the GSM coordinates returned by a hidden Google API over a Web Service. So no chance to see an exact calculation. But where is the Accuracy of GPS calculated. I thought the GPS receiver only returns a dimensionless DOP value. And with Android 1.5 its not posible to read the NMEA sentences directly.

Has anyone noticed the differences in using the two maps in terms of location accuracy? Specifically with GPS off. I don't expect either app to be extremely accurate in finding my location with GPS off, but what's odd is that Google Maps put's me about .25 miles WNW of my actual location while AT&T Maps put's my location .25 ENE of my actual location. You would think that the operating system determines the location and provides the app of that information, but that doesn't seem to be the case (since the two maps are showing different locations).

I have been using my N1 for a few days now and the GPS accuracy is really wrong, about 500m out of the right position. I know GPS is not really precise, but 500m is far too much.
I am seeing this behaviour when on WI-FI, haven't test through 3G/edge yet though.
I haven't installed any ROM.

Phone settings: Location : Battery Saving (GPS off, using Wifi/network location only)
On Google Play Services 4.0.x - I get very accurate location small circle around where my house is.
After updating to 4.2.25 - I get a large circle - maybe the radius of an entire block / surface area of a cell tower coverage roughly
Uninstall the update to play services (back to 4.0.x) - get very accurate location again.
I am using a RAZR HD with 4.4.2 kit kat / CM11.
Did play services update broke my specific phone?
I would stay on the older Play Services but Hangouts and Maps keep bitching about needing to update it.

People may have noticed the recent TLD change for UK gmail addresses previously googlemail.co.uk and now gmail.com. With this, it seems to have messed up my syncing and authentication for some reason. I changed over the other day and ever since I kept getting a message saying the authentication failed. I then added my gmail address as another account and set it to sync gmail (can't sync the calendar for some reason it's not an option). I have not received any push notifications of new mail and I have to manually refresh from within the mail app to get new e-mails. I don't want to remove the previous googlemail.co.uk as it says I have to restore my phone to factory settings (possibly losing messages etc.)

I find when you touch the screen in the camera it auto-focuses and "occasionally" takes a picture. Is there some trick to this? I can't seem to figure out how to take a picture every time I touch the screen. Any ideas?

Does anyone know the proper interpretation of the accuracy measurements returned by getAccuracy()? For instance, are they calculated as:Circular Error Probability (meaning, if i understand correctly, radius of a 50% confidence circle)? Radius of 95% confidence circle? something else? In addition, what are the actual calculations that are used and how much can we rely on them? Does it depend on the source of the location estimate (GPS vs. network)?

I have a quick development question. I have an application that displays an image. You can pinch zoom/move the image around easy enough. What I'm wondering is how would I go about mapping the location of the users touch to the coordinates on the image itself, and not the screen?

So twice in the past two days, the screen isn't registering where I'm tapping on it. Last night, when I was trying to pick the middle right lower icon, it kept opening the menu. When I clicked the lower right icon, it would click the dot for the next window. It was seeming to register about a half inch lower on the screen than where I was actually pressing.
Another thing that was happening was when scrolling, it would click on things instead of scroll. I was in the Appmarket and scrolling through apps when it would click on one and then start installing. This was very frustrating although I was lucky none of the apps that installed were paid apps.
Its working fine now this morning but its a bit disconcerting. Has anyone been able to do a screen reset or reconfigure the touch?

So there's the multitouch issue with the Nexus One and HTC Desire. Is there some documentation on what other devices have this hardware error and what the total market share is? If you had a game idea that needs massive multitouch gestures, would you go for it on Android or would it currently be a waste of time with only a few devices supporting it?

I have been trying to get my rooted Galaxy Nexus to load the CWM Touch recovery image, and I just can't seem to get it to stick. I originally just tried to install the basic non-touch version from Rom Manager. When it rebooted, I got the red ! and a dead robot. So I booted into fast boot, and flashed the touch recovery. After flashing if I go straight to recovery, I do get the CWM recovery and can backup. My problem is that if I the reboot the phone, I can never get back to it again. I always end up at the red ! and a dead robot.
I read on another thread to rename the file "/recovery-from-boot.p" to "recovery-from-boot.p-bak" and that it might require reflashing the image. I moved this file and re-named it, reflashed, booted into android. Then powered off and booted into recover mode, just to see the red ! again.
It seems that when I first flash I can go into it, but anytime after that it just dies. I could probably just go ahead and flash a new image to the phone but I don't feel good doing that while the recovery image seems to need re-imaging every time.

Next time your screen starts acting crazy, immediately put the phone in the refrigerator WITHOUT turning off the screen or resetting. Also notice the temp of the phone when you do this.Wait 3-5 minutes.Remove phone, and try typing something again Problem solved! (at least for me), until the phone gets warm again. I just re-created this 10 times in a row. This would explain why the problem really flares up when plugged into a charger/dock, or when using the phone for a while. Seems the heat from the phone is screwing with the touchscreen.Try this experiment and post the results!

Just got back from my hols where I used my (stock) N1 camera a lot. Got some great pics but a few certainly highlighted just how important touch-to-focus is to me. Was quickly reading a review of the Desire and read it has touch-to-focus. Was just wondering if anyone who is actually running the modaco desire ROM on their N1 can confirm whether this works? I'd also be interested to know if I could just use the desire camera app on a rooted N1 with Cynanogen? I'm rather partial to the stock appearance and not massively inclined towards Sense UI.

I'm trying to set up a tasker profile that will save some time (and my phones hardware...).
In a nutshell: When using a particular app, I would like the screen to turn off after a short period of time, but (and here's the bit I can't figure out) allow it to be unlocked just by touching the screen (i.e. no hardware button presses required). Is this possible with Tasker?

I just got my phone and the battery might still be stabilizing, and of course I'm fiddling with it a lot and I've installed heaps of apps, but I can't quite work out something. I unplugged my phone at midnight and this morning found my phone at 70% charge. I also got a message from my provider that I'd used up all my data. I checked and found that my phone had used up (sent+received) 30MB overnight. Google Maps was the biggest culprit - it received 700K but it sent almost 8MB. This is while the phone was sitting on my bedside table! And of course, as I'm driving to work (not using the phone at all), Google Maps was transmitting my location information back to it's servers so that the traffic flow is updated on their systems.
That's cool, but there doesn't appear to be any way to disable or turn off this in GM's configuration, or even exit the app. It seems that having My Location services enabled gives Google Maps (and I'm sure other apps like weather, gmail, Contacts, etc.) free reign to send and transmit data all the time. I don't want to have to disable My Location services completely; I want finer control over things on a per-app basis. Having Google Maps transmit 8MB overnight might not seem like a lot, but when the phone is idle, it disables wireless (to save battery) and thus all data is going through 2G/3G and I'm incurring data charges.
