View 1 Replies View RelatedI have looked at several forum posts on several sites to find a solution to my problem, but have failed. I have a G1 that does not seem to like mp4s. The various forums all recommended this file type (some recommended ipod presets, others iphone) but I've successfully converted files to mp4 using a few different converters that will still not play on my G1. Is there some problem with my specific phone?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI was hoping to get some feedback from those of you that are in the advanced category for smart phones and media. I'm gearing up and converting many of MY videos to MP4 in anticipation of watching them on my hotly anticipated new 4.3" screen.
In regards to the conversion of MY OWN PERSONAL video files, I had some questions about settings and the process for making the videos look and work best on the EVO. I realize this question may be premature given the actual phone isn't out yet, but any info would be appreciated.
My main questions are:
What settings people would recommend for using Handbrake to convert the files?
What settings will use the least amount of resources and memory, but will still give the best playback/image possible on the EVO?
I have waded through what information I could find on the forum in the EVO and Incredible (closest match to EVO) threads and this is what I have found in case anybody wants to use it for reference. THANK YOU to those posters who have supplied the following information, it got me moving in the right direction.
--------------------------------------------------------------
Programs available to convert files to MP4: (These were the most often mentioned, but there are several others available to use as well)
XDA Video Encoder - [APP][REF]Video encoding GUI - xda-developers - Appears to be free, instructions listed on web link for operation. "Probably the best movie converter. It was designed for converting movies for older, less powerful HTC devices, but it'll still work great for this. Extremely easy to use, and produces small file sizes with great quality. Works pretty fast too. I highly, highly recommend it for converting movies to use on Android phones."
ANYDVD - SlySoft AnyDVD | any dvd, region free, dvd copy, copy dvd movies, dvd decoder, dvd ripper, macrovision, dvd copying software - Free for 30 days, $$$$ after that. Updates often and seems to be regarded as best for decrypting files.
DVDFAB - DVD Copy Software from DVDFab | Copy DVD to PSP, DVDR or iPod - Free for 30 days, then $$$ after that. Full package looks like you are able to convert files for all kinds of uses and to all types of players including mobile phones.
Handbrake - HandBrake - Free. Seems to be the most popular here on the android forums. Easy to use and so far has done a good job converting for me.
DVD Converter Pro - InterTech DVD Converter - Free trial, then $$$. 1 comment from poster "I'm impressed by dvd converter pro. It worked well and seems to be much easier than dvd fab. I will probably purchase it. The incredible photo viewer is not well suited for displaying videos though."

Tutorials and help: (comments taken from different threads here on Android forum)
- Well, to get the ball rolling, here are quite a few guides on how to convert DVD to an Android-compatible standard h.264 video format.
Guide, How To, Tutorial and Article list - VideoHelp.com
- Jerry Hildenbrand (Gbhill) @ Android Central wrote a great how to on video conversion using Handbrake as well as Double Twist on the Android Central Blog. It can be found HERE
- Here is another, more general, video guide which discusses Handbrake in more detail for those who are interested. I personally like the step by step guides with lots of pictures... I consider myself an advanced technical user, but sometime I just want to get it done quick.
Here are the links...

- If you use Handbrake uncheck the CABAC entropy coding under the Advanced tab. You can use it but it will limit you to yxflash (a pay for app) for the player. I can say that if you rip correctly it looks amazing on the AMOLED screen of the N1. Even Spongebob has amazing color resolution. But thats 90mb per 12 minute episode.
-------------------------------------------------------------
Resolution and Settings Comments:
- I am using DVDfab. I have read that they should be set to 480 X 272 and use the preset setting for apple tv. I have encoded some to mp4 and they play really nice on my computer.
- I would recommend keeping either the horizontal or vertical resolution the highest the device supports which is either 800 vertical or 480 horizontal.
- Isn't the display resolution 800x480? So how did someone come up with 480x272? To get the best picture, I would set it to 800x? or ?x480.
- If it's a dvd, you want to keep it at the same resolution of 720x480 (or whatever the 4:3 res is, but why you would use 4:3 on this phone is beyond me).
- 480x272 is a 16:9 aspect ratio, the ratio that is used for movies as that is the ratio that most widescreen TVs are (e.g., 720p = 1280x720 and 1080p = 1920x1080).
I think 800x450 would be the best resolution as it's the closest to the native resolution of the display while still maintaining the 16:9 aspect ratio -- important if you want the proportions to look how they're supposed to look. Use this resolution only if the source video is HD, though. DVD videos are 720x480 (I think 720x400 is viewable since it's letterboxed), so encoding to any resolution above that would just be a waste of space by creating a larger video file.
- Yeah, I just encoded a movie using 480x272 and it looks great. Even on my 15" laptop screen. I think when you encode a movie from 5 gig to 800 meg it probably doesnt make a huge difference if you use 800 x 480 or 480 x 272.
- Folks, this is a classic debate, but recording the vids at full Inc resolution has drawbacks with no gains (unless you also plan on playing them back on a bigger display- laptop is example).
1. Drains more battery
2. Takes up over twice the space
Please download a video for PSP or iPod, iPhone (or format one this) and you will see that you will not notice a difference between the vids on a 3.7" display.
Output from the composite video of the Inc will also not use the higher resolution either. Composite video out is the constraint there. Not 720p output like the EVO (that puppy will run hot outputting that res to a display).
- So i put a movie on my Incredible that was set to the 480 x 272. It plays perfect and looks perfect.
I love my N1 but I need to be pointed in the right direction.
Biggest problem with my Phonebook: When you call someone it obviously goes into ur call log. But then it also goes into your "frequently called" section in your favorites tab. What if I dont want someone to know who i called. Is there a way to disable fequently called section? It sends all the numbers you call in there as if its an alternate call log. I obviously know how to delete my call log.
ChompSMS: When I receive a Facebook notification " such and such wants to be ur friend, type "add" to add or "info" for info, etc. When I type add/info/next as I did on my BB it sends the person a message now saying "next/add/info". I have to wait for my FB notification which is about almost 15mins later or more to do it thru the app. Another problem on Chomp is when I send someone a pic and they reply from the MMS, it replies back to me with a blank multi media message.
Don't know if this has happened to anyone else, but my alarm doesn't seem to go off when I have it set to a specific schedule, like monday, wednesday, friday. It went off for monday and ever since then, I just woke up late for my classes because it doesn't go off. Has anyone else experienced this problem and if there is a fix for it? I mean the right alarm time even shows up when I hit the lock screen but it doesn't actually go off

View 1 Replies View RelatedI use nexus one, otherwise known as a google phone, and just got the 2.2.1 update. Upon updating I got a request for a security update for the Email app. It wants to be able to:
1. Erase all data (perform a factory reset, deleting all of your data without any confirmation)
2. Limit password (reset the types of passwords you are allowed to use)
3. Watch login attempts (monitor failed attempts to login to the device, to perform some action)
4. Force Lock (control when the device locks, requiring you re-enter its password)
Call me paranoid, but this, especially no.1 seems suspect. Why would an email client need this extreme set of privileges? My spidey sense is pinging louder than a gaydar next to a drag queen. Can anyone confirm if this is a legit update or if I just downloaded a trojan horse of some sort?
I have the Nexus 5 with 4.4.2 , I'm new with Android, my phone is rooted. I recently made the "buttons" disappear adding a line in the build.prop file and instaled LMT to have a pie,but the problem is that in Google Chrome, the Settings/Menu Button in the top right (the one with three little boxes) disappeared. View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm running a Galaxy Nexus, and the ROM I'm currently on has a performance option in the Settings Menu, which gives control of the kernel and stuff. However, I'd rather use TricksterMod, and I would like to be able to launch TricksterMod from Settings instead of the Performance app.
So far, I've decompiled my Settings.apk, and looked through the files, and I'm not sure what to change.
I have to change settings esxmlsettings_headers.xml, correct? Specifically,
Code:
header android:icon="@drawable/ic_settings_performance" android:id="@id/performance_settings" android:title="@string/performance_settings_title" android:fragment="com.android.settings.performance.PerformanceSettings" />
I would also have to change settings esvaluesstrings.xml, specifically, the string referenced by "@string/performance_settings_title" so that I can have the correct name, correct?
And similarly, settings esdrawable, for the icon.
The big question is, what do I replace with for "com.android.settings.performance.PerformanceSetti ngs"? Do I need to move TricksterMod somewhere specific, or what would I reference? dataappcom.bigeyes0x0.trickstermod-1.apk?
After making all these changes, I'd simply recompile and push the Settings.apk back without signing, correct? Have I missed any steps?
I played around a bit with my framework-res.apk and removed the navigation bar. (bools.XML navigationbar =false). I have a nexus 10 with jellybean 4.2.1.
Now Skype and youtube for example dont show the settings button anymore. (The three little dots above each other in upper right corner).
This is the first phone I've owned with video capture available (LG Rumor, Instinct, Pre) and I notice there are a variety of settings available when it comes to video. One video I had recorded earlier today seemed more choppy with the exact same settings than another I took yesterday, the only difference I could really note was there was much more light in today's video. So is there a secret to beautiful video every time?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm having a bit of trouble getting videos to play on my HTC Evo with Android 2.1. I have several videos that I play on my PSP, and work just fine. However, when I transferred them over to my Evo's MicroSD card and tried to play them in any video player, they only played the audio stream, and no picture was shown. I never had trouble getting PSP-formatted videos to work on phones before; they worked n my G1 just fine. I assumed that because the Evo and PSP even had similar-sized screens, it would be even more compatible. It sounds somewhat foolish when I type it out, but one could expect it to work. I have tried playing it in the stock video player, the Meridian player, and the Video Player app from the android market, and they all had the same error. The file is an .mp4; and, as I said, gave me no problems when played in the PSP's video player.
Here's the specifications on the video file:
Type: MPEG4
Video Codec: AVC
Audio Codec: AAC
Size: 25 MB
Length: 00:23:41
Width: 480
Height: 272
Aspect Ratio: 16:9
Data Rate: 99kbps
Total Bitrate: 147 kbps
Frame Rate: 23 fps
After the OTA 2.2 I just did, the Camera/Video quality hasn't changed a bit...Any suggestions on settings?

I have not found a combination that works for myTouch (Android 1.5). Everything produces just a black screen, although they all play on my PC.Please do not waste our time with talk about MPEG-4 ASP (lavc) as all this can produce is choppy video that the Android's processor cannot handle or quality so awful it makes you want to go get a Windows Mobile phone. Please also do not post FFMPEG command lines you guess might work. It is too difficult for users to get a current version of FFMPEG that doesn't crash every 3 seconds, and whatever you thought worked likely will fail given other people's source files.
