Nexus :: Can't Partition SD For Apps2SD
Aug 14, 2010
when i partition my SD to include an ext2 partition my phone does not boot, it gets to the white htc boot screen (phone is rooted using modaco rom) but doesn't boot. it boots if just merely formatted but not when partitioned. anyone know a solution? or maybe a windows program that can partition ext2?

I am new to not only the forum but the phone and rooting the phone as well. I have a desire on froyo 2.2, and just rooted it using the unrevoked 3.21 method. Now i would like to use apps 2 sd properly with partitions and whatever? Again my apologies, i do not fully understand the process and any information would be much appreciated.

Rooted my phone yesterday and installed Teppic's rooted stock rom and loving it. I am trying to create a partition so I can use Apps2SD but I am having major issues. I am following the thread below but when I get to the parted /dev/block/mmcblk0 part its not working. Anyone got any idea's? Probably just me being dumb! Have tried googling it but all a bit confusing

With Clockworkmod, you have 3 partition options: 128, 256 and 512. Seems to me the obvious choice would be to use 512mb since it would give you the most room to install apps. But I gotta wonder why they would give you the 3 options because it would seem most people would want the most space you can have. That got me wondering if there is some potential performance issues with using the larger size or is it nothing more than just giving the user 3 different choices?

I am running rooted stock Android 2.3 on LG E405 (no working 4.x ROMs exist for the device)
I have two questions:
1) What is the shell command to manually make android allow the PC to mount androids' (internal) partition as USB-drive? (I cannot think of right keywords to google this one up - )
2) How does android determine which partition is which (i.e. which one to remount for the PC when connecting in "USB storage" mode), beside vold.fstab and init.rc? On android 2.3 that info is not in "framework-res.apk", so where is it? In the partition table itself?
I had switched data partition with internal sdcard partition.
Here's how: Phone had a very small "/data" partition on /dev/block/mmcblk0p21 and large internal "/sdcard" partition on mmcblk0p20
So I reformatted mmcblk0p20 (ex-sdcard partition) into EXT4 and mmcblk0p21 (ex-data partition) into FAT32
Then I changed init.rc to mount mmcblk0p20 as /data type EXT4 and mmcblk0p21 as /sdcard type VFAT (mounting /sdcard was commented out in stock init.rc for some reason). This required modifying my boot image.
I have also set correct partition number in vold.fstab:
[#]dev_mount sdcard /mnt/sdcard auto /devices/platform/msm_sdcc.3/mmc_host[/#]
So basicly I now have a large /data partition and small internal /sdcard. I'm able install up to a gigabyte of APKs and it works fine.
However, when I connect to my PC via USB into "USB Storage" mode, the phone seems to still try to unmount what was previously sdcard partition (/dev/block/mmcblk0p20), instead of what is NOW an sdcard partition (/dev/block/mmcblk0p21) I can still send files to the phone via wi-fi and ADB, but the ability to mount it directly would be nice.
If I accidentally select "erase internal sdcard" from storage menu, that will also most likely erase what is now my /data partition, softbricking the phone. The "factory reset" option will probably only corrupt the sdcard.

I'm have been trying to create a second partition on my sd card using miniTool Partition Wizard. But in the end I never get a 2nd partition but just a smaller first one.My approach is as follows:
insert empty SD card (FAT32, 4GB)
open miniTool Partition Wizard
right click on SD card - "Move/Resize"
choose 1gb for unallocated space after - click ok
right click on 2nd partition and choose "create"
create 2nd partition with FAT32/Ext2/Ext3 (tried all options already) and "primary" and Cluster 4KB - click ok
Apply
Afterwards my SD card is still shown as one partition, but this has just 1gb less capacity then before.Neither the Wizard nor the phone detects the 2nd partition then.

I can't figure what is exactly meaning the Partition Sdcard values in CWM.
I have an i9000, with 8Gb of flash. Some are system reserved. Available is around 6Gb.
When i run CWM, i can partition my sdcard, but i don't see what means the possible values (for 256 to 4096).
This is obviously not ruling the space left on /sdcard mountpoint (i partition to 2048, i still have nearly 6Gb available)... So what exactly means partition sdcard from CWM ??
i can't find an answer, and i dislike, when flashing rom, following commands i don't really master (generally a partition SD 2048 / SWAP 256 or SWAP 0).

I have bought a cheap chinese phone that had a 4g rom. 512mb is mapped to data as p3 and p4 is mapped to internal storage which is 2g.
I have managed to work out how to delete partition4 and extend partition3 as they follow on from each other.
However how do I remove all links to it in the system as it still tries to mount it on boot even though it isn't there.
I have removed the line from vold.fstab and that just crashed the external and internal sdcards and the storage section inside the system settings.

Had Hero for 4-5 weeks now and love it big time. Slightly anxious on the old rooting and adding ROM to the phone myself. Had a look through the various stickys and steps to follow etc. not totally clued up on how it will work right enough? One question I have is, if I root the phone (Following ?UnLockr? website steps), can i then add the Apps2sd app to the phone and move app to there myself and for future downloads?
Do I need to add customer ROM b4 i can do this or does rooting the phone and leaving defauly ROM on phone allow for the apps2sd app work on the phone?

I'm relatively new to the rooting lark but I've managed to get Villain 5.2 up and running. However I can't seem to get Apps2SD working with it. I've partitioned the SD card and changed Ext2 to Ext3, but when I run Apps2SD it tells me there's a problem and I should check out the tutorial (which links to a deleted thread)...
Anyone used Villain 5.2 with Apps2SD who can help?

I've tried to get apps2sd working on my phone. In fact, I flashed my rom all over again to get it working, as I couldn't be bothered to manually uninstall everything on my phone.
I flashed the MoDaCo r5 rom (the most recent on, based on the 2.1 GSM build). I then went into the recovery menu. created the ext2 partition and upgraded it to an ext3 partiton, as per the instructions.
I've installed a load of applications, I see the phone memory has gone down to a fraction over 40mb remaining. So, I reboot the phone (as I'm aware that the apps transfer over to the memory card during the reboot), and when I turn it back on, the internal memory remains at a fraction over 40mb.

I have searched and read and followed all steps I could to the T. I cannot seem to get Apps2SD to work. I am using Drellisdee's recovery as well as Trident's Velocity 3. I have formatted the SD card to 0mb swap with 512mb Ext.3 and FAT32 for the rest. I have an 8GB class 2 (I know it sucks) SD card. I tried using Drellisdee's recovery and the one included with ROM Manager. I have verified I have the Ext partition through Titanium backup. it shows that I have 102 out of 159MB free on my internal storage and 220 out of 480MB free on my A2sd partition. If I long press on an app on Titanium backup I am not allowed to move it to the SD (The option is grayed out) and when I install an app the internal space goes down. It doesn't seem to matter if I install the app from a backup or directly from the market.
I have tried re-flashing the recovery and ROM multiple times with no luck. If anyone could help me I would be VERY great full.

Has anyone else noticed that in the FroYo ROMS, the entire app is not stored on the SD card? If I click on the SD card tab under 'manage applications' and look at a certain app (Astro, eg.), it only shows that 1.5mb is stored on the SD card. I know for certain that Astro is around 3.5mb. I've experienced this with every FroYo ROM I've had.

After testing both stock 2.1 and 2.2 and different rom bakes, the conclusion is that the Incredible for some reason does not really have "true" apps2sd (as define by Android). It appears that regardless of if most of an app is moved to the sd or not, the total available app space is nowhere near even the 748mb on device and the ceiling is actually around 500mb when "low on space" errors begin popping up.
Key example is when apps are shifted to the sd, the low on space error still happened, regardless of cache and message spaces being clean. I tested this with stock as well. The app install space is not to be confused with data downloads that some apps automatically install to sd (games like Quake, Nova, etc), but the actuall apps2sd move process in the app manager. It does not matter where the weight of the apps is installed, since whether having 300mb apps on the device and 200mb apps on the card results in the same thing as 500mb of apps on the device and 0mb apps on the sd- low on space is the result. On the Incredible, apps2sd is really app displacement. As a result, it is better not to use apps2sd, since saves space on the microsd card and makes no difference to the amount of apps you can install. Also, there is no way to get anywhere near the 748mb, yet alone having that much on the device and part of apps on the microsd (total would be a more than 748mb).

So I've rooted my Desire at last and have now got FW version 2.1-update 1 with software v 1.15.405.4 installed. Sorry in advance for the nooby Q's but the apps2sd is getting me all confused here a bit. I've also bought the premium version of ROM Manager, it has the facilty to look for the most popular roms for your particular android phone. I picked out (randomly really) the Shadowfrost 0.5 rom and it's currently (slowly) downloading! I've got a 16gb sandisk SD card that I have just copied everything over onto my PC. There's also a function in rom manager to partition the SD card that I might use too. If it allocates a 512mb Ext3 partition and the rest as fat32 for my pics music etc....will that be it?

If you are using apps2sd, will all apps install on the sdcard by default or can some go into internal storage space? Reason I ask is that I had previously removed ThinkFree Office from my stock ROM for space saving purposes. Now with apps2sd capabilities, I figured i'd reinstall it (from an .apk backup I had) since it would go on the sd card, so I thought. After installing it, it seems like it installed under internal storage space because I lost about 9mb of internal storage, which happens to be the same size as the app itself.
