Motorola Droid X :: Custom Roms And Activation
Sep 23, 2010
I've done some pretty extensive google searching, as well as searching here on the forums, and unfortunately I can't find the answer to this one.If I flash a custom ROM to my DX with ROM Manager and Clockwork, will my phone require me to activate again with the Verizon service? I'm in Japan for the next 2 weeks, and obviously I'm away from any Verizon networks. I have service while roaming (and a temporarily upgraded international unlimited data plan), but I don't have access to some services that I normally would while on my "home network". In fact, if I go to the Settings > About Phone menu, the "Check for upgrade" option is completely grayed out.So what's up? If I flash a ROM am i screwed until I get back to the States?

Please read this before you assume I'm an idiot Anyways, so my thinking is, we can root our Droid X. This gives us access to every system file. amirite? If that's the case, shouldn't it be possible to literally replace everything using some super user priviledged apk? I know linux well, and I know some android development stuff, but I don't know anything about custom roms (on android at least) and how efuse works, so I obviously could be completely off base here. The only hitch I see would be that while the phone is running, many many many of these files are likely in use. It just seems there would be some way to close everything (and I mean EVERYTHING), with the phone still running, and replace all system files with a new set.Now I'm not entirely savvy on how efuse works, and I'm even less sure on how changing the system this way would, from efuse's eyes, differ from a full custom rom flashing, and if, if it did work, you'd still be bricked on the next reboot.Thoughts? I mean it at least seems that we could find a way to replace motoBlur.

I downloaded ROM MANAGER (Free version) and everytime I download one of the roms, and I go through the process of clicking wipe cache + backup rom, it just restarts my phone.

I've heard Skype is a little picky about which phones it works on, and I've noticed when doing a regular Astro backup of my apps that Skype is listed as being 'protected.' Does skype have any trouble running on custom ROMs?

I have been messing around with rooting and installing custom roms then going stock messing with settings then going to another to see how I like it. In the past, after I flashed a stock .sbf file I would be prompted for the Froyo OTA update. I just did it again last night. I was wondering, can you flash your phone too many times where you start to cause problems? And, does Verizon keep a check on how many times you've downloaded an update? Or, is it just not popping up because FRG22D is out?

I have found that the AD Community ROM acts as if it is a brand new phone, never activated, and runs you through the set up of all your settings - and then proceeds to DL all your apps that you had installed previously.I posted a comment about it at AllDroid - View topic - [Rom] AllDroid Community Beta 0.3 release and got a reply that when someone went back to un-rooted and what not, the OEM ROM did the same thing. So, this led me to believe that there is some particular setting that allows for this to occur, where the ROM being installed is installed in a certain state so as to make the phone think it has never been activated before. This being said, I wondered if other ROMs could be tricked into thinking the same thing - and I hit upon an idea- what if, after installing a new ROM, you go into settings and do the factory reset that is there? Since I don't have anything installed except for this custom ROM and SPRecovery and such, I am not really gonna lose anything by doing this, so why no give it a whirl

I rooted my phone (droid x), and then installed bootstrap + Rom Manager. I downloaded REVOlution, and then I got to recovery, I clicked reboot, and it always FREEZES at the M sign. Then I looked up other forum posts on this site, and so I ended up deleting cache, going to factory reset etc... and I still can't get back to my screen.

I was disappointed that CyanogenMod doesn't list my phone as supported.
I've searched this forum for any other custom ROMs for my Motorola XT800 and didn't see any specifically listed.
I've got 2.1 installed, and want to install a ROM with 2.2, but before I root my phone, I'd like to know what my options are for custom ROMs that I can use.
This is a dual SIM phone purchased in China that I use with China Mobile GSM and China Telecom CDMA. Awesome phone btw, except for not having the Android Market app installed and China Telecom's not releasing an update to FroYo yet...

I own an Motorola XT316 device, and i can't find an Custom ROM, so i was thinking to port one from Galaxy 5 (i5550) or LG Optimus me (same hardware, same screen, maybe same camera).
The problem is how to do it, because theres some differences between them like the camera. The XT316 has an locked bootloader, this can screw everything?

Is it possible to root the Droid prior to activating it (you know, doing the *228 thing to be able to actually make calls and use data)? My wife's new Droid just arrived and I'm planning to put JRummy's Pink Froyo on for her. Thought it might be nice to have it done prior to her getting home from work. I'll obviously still be signing in with her google account and I have wifi at home should I need to access any data. But she needs her current phone right now and activating this new one would in turn deactivate the one she has with her.

Is there any way that you can get them to waive your activation fee for a new line? I'm purchasing my Droid at Best Buy.I just jumped ship from sprint. At Sprint you normally could call CS and eventually get them to waive your Activation Fee.Other times when the phone CS didn't work, usually we could just e-mail CS and they would waive your activation fee.I was told however that Verizon are very strict with their Activation fee.

I purchased a DX today an noticed that there were numbers on in the address book that I didn't put there. I plan on taking it to another store to get a new phone. Is there a way to find out what were the total minutes used and first activation date? I want to be able to have evidence that I have a used phone.

Ok, I have 2 accounts on my X - one is a Gmail that I rarely use, and the other is a hotmail account which is frequently used.
I'm coming from Black Berry and I kinda understand that the mail is delivered differently but ever since I set up my hotmail I've received 3 sets of the same messages, read or un-read. Now every time this has happened there has been 1 new unread message, so I assume its when my X syncs with the server. Is there something I can change, or should have done during setup? I'm using the stock email app.
Thank you in advance! this is really my only complaint so far with this nice phone and hope its my user error.

I've got a blacklisted Droid and need to bypass the activation at the beginning. I can't figure how to use the phone without activating first, which can't be done.
Does anyone know a way to bypass this activation and go straight into using the phone?

Maybe i'm not really seeing anything that stick out to me but could someone please give me an answer.
Whats the difference between a 2.0.1 ROM and 2.1 ROM?
I've been rooted for awhile and always stuck with either AdamZ ROM or Pete's Bugless Beast and they were all based off of 2.0.1. Is there something special I need to do in order to run a ROM based off of 2.1?

I have searched here and via Google searches about Rooting and custom ROMs. I still am not quite sure what any of it means. I know rooting allows access to things that you normally cannot do such as removing HTC and Sprint apps. Which I would LOVE to do. I mean, who the hell wants the stock widget anyway?

Has anyone tried this to build your own custom ROM? There are bits and pieces of different ROMs that I want to have in one, but haven't found the one that will work for me, so I'm considering trying to make my own to have *EXACTLY* what I want, but I know *NOTHING* about coding. I found this link over on XDA, has anyone tried it before?

Ok after I patched my Evo with the OTA update, I am wishing I had rooted first. In an attempt to figure out what I want to do at this point, I'm leaning toward rooting and flashing a custom rom. The questions in my mind are:
1) What are the benefits/disadvantages of the different ROMs out there today? Has anyone made any sort of review site for roms, or a comparison chart?
2) Is there one source that would have all major ROMs in one place? (I'm thinking xda forums, but haven't had time to try to pour through that yet).
3) If all one is looking for is to be able to run root-required apps (Backups, Tether, screen shots, etc..) Is a root + stock ROM the best way to go?
4) Should I Plan on losing ALL my data/settings on the first root? (I know google and other cloud stuff remains intact, as well as the SD card items). Coming from a Palm OS (sadly not WebOS), I find Android great in some respects, but the lockdown of a true backup still boggles my mind. I'm sure these have been asked elsewhere, and if you know where feel free to boot me in that direction, sadly after sifting through a few hours worth of root forums I still can't find the basic info above when it comes to the Evo 4G (I found answers for a few other models)
