Motorola Droid : Want Some Good Reasons To Switch To A New ROM?
Apr 16, 2010
I'm getting pretty impatient with DroidMod and am starting to get bored with my Droid (running DM1.0), especially with the Incredible just around the corner. Can somebody give me any good reason(s) to switch to a new ROM? And maybe while you're at it, recommend the best kernel. I'm looking for a good balance between performance and battery life. I want better battery life than stock, and better performance...I know, it's asking a lot!
Current Stats:
ROM: DroidMod 1.0
CPU Speed: 800-1000
Long Bench (inside SetCPU): @1000 = 752
Short Bench: 225
Launcher: Helix
Screens: 3
Widgets: Weather, Calendar, GTasks, Power, Battery, Gmail Count, Handcent Count

I currently have a new Sprint Touch Pro 2. With the Windows Mobile ship apparently sinking, I'm thinking of jumping ship to the Android platform. I have 10 days to return my phone for a different model. I have good reasons to stay with a Windows Mobile phone.
1) Must have good Outlook Exchange Server capabilities for work.
2) I have certain programs on my WM phone that I REALLY like/need. (Coreplayer, Cash Organizer)
3) How to put this. I'm a PC, not a Mac. I'm not too much into the whole Facebook, Twitter, Gmail, social networking, couldn't really give a hoot about all that.
Give me some compelling reasons to abandon the WM camp and become a Phandroid.

A couple of months ago I decided to jump on the Android bandwagon, starting with the Incredible then moving on to the Evo. Everything was going well, life was good, then Apple announces the iPhone 4! I watched the keynote in total awe and drooled when Jon I've explained how glorious the "new" iPhone was and how it will "change everything again." Then the dust settled. The iPhone 4 will be a great phone, however it doesn't offer anything new to me. Virtually all of the reasons I used to justify switching to Android still exist!
My take on the iPhone 4:
Excellent build quality (HTC should take notes)
Fantastic screen
Up to 32 Gig memory
Integrated Video Chat/Conferencing (Wifi Only)
Very thin
It's purdy
Pseudo multitasking
Glass back
For $25 month you can get 2Gig xfer
Here's why I STILL prefer the EVO on Sprint:
WiFi Mobile Hotspot (Saves me $30 per month over my Verizon MIFI)
WiFi Mobile Hotspot allows me to hop on my laptop or my 6 year old to stream Netflix on the iPad!
Sprint TV
Unlimited data baby!
4G
Text to Speech
Speech to Text
HDMI out
8 Megapixel w/dual Flash
Replaceable battery
Turn by turn directions
Voice search
I can VPN to my work computer
3G coverage! I paid $30 per month for Edge on the iPhone! Sprint offers 3G!
Ability to video chat over 3G/4G (Been using Fring)
Ability to transfer files via FTP to my host account
I can select an app to install without being kicked out of the Market!
I have the ability to create ringtones on the fly. No need to pay an additional fee to iTunes to "convert" a song.
Live wallpapers!
Built in radio
I've found the Amazon MP3 store to be much cheaper than iTunes. For example, Fray's "The Fray" is $9.99 on itunes vs. $5.00 on Amazon MP3!
Flash Lite
I can rotate my photos
I can expand my memory
Sprints plans are cheap as hell compared to AT&T
I can email photos at full resolution
How many times have iPhone users purchased an app, only to be disappointed? On the Market, you have 24 hours to test drive. Don't like it, full refund.

In all honesty, both phones are mind blowing. Look at the big picture and select what phone/service will benefit you the most.

So, I'm new to android and all things android with this being my first android phone. The only real modding I've ever done was jailbreaking the original iphone when I had it (before switching to a blackberry).
My main question is: what are the REASONS to root your phone? What are the benefits? Are there any downsides to rooting your phone? Basically, someone talk me into it..

I recently purchased the Droid 2 today & noticed when I turn on the Wi Fi in settings. It was turning itself on & off, on & off rapidly for about a minute. Eventually it was stable. This was unusual. So I went back to the Verizon store. Got a replacement. While in the store. The rep turned on Wi Fi too see if it was an isolated incident. Same thing started happenning with the new replacement. Wi Fi going bananas. On, then off repeatly for about a minute. He placed a trouble ticket & gave me the new replacement. He also said this is an KNOWN ISSUE.

I rooted my Droid using the SM Updater and am currently running sholes mod 2.05 but with everything going on between that and then I've been watching Pete's bugless beast ROM. I've decided that I would like to switch but I don't wanna unroot and then re-root my phone to do that. What I need to do to switch over?

How do I switch calls when I hear the beep (call waiting). Seems my screen goes blank when I hold the phone up to my face, then takes a couple seconds to illuminate the dial pad but the only button I see is to ADD CALL. I want to switch between or back and forth.

Will the droid be able to handle the 64gb sd card? I found one I have laying around and thought I might put it in there. Now, before I do I was wondering.. I'm rooted, will changing sd cards do anything to that? Also, aside from maybe the root files there really isnt much else on my sd card so I'm not really worried about losing anyhting.. I'd just rather hve 64 gb then the 16 in there now!

I have a friend who has a Curve for work, and a Pearl for personal use... His favorite of the two is the Pearl, as he for some reason loves the keyboard... He tells me he can type at 70+ words per minute on it, which I can believe since I type around 50wpm on the droid keyboard. He wants a new form factor for his phone, but he does use the BBs for work, and thinks they are the bee's knees... How do I convince him that for his personal phone, the Droid is the best choice for him to upgrade to?
His arguments thus far have been:
1. He has flash on his Blackberry.
2. His web browser is fast.
3. He can connect to 5 or 6 or however many exchange servers he wants.
4. It's the most stable OS for phones no matter what.
5. It's the most secure OS for phones no matter what.
6. Apps are more customizable.
7. The time of day radio signal quality can even be customized for better call quality depending on solar radiation...

OK so I have launcher pro plus as my home replacement, but I wanted to go back to the stock home launcher and I cant. I tried home switcher, also tried clear home defaults too, nothing has been working. I went into manage apps and neither 1 is set as a default, so I cant clear the default. I tried a force stop on launcher pro but that didn't work either. I don't wanna un install launcher pro bc I have it set up nicely, I just want to set up the stock home for fun and giggles.

Two or three months ago, I'd heard all about rooting, but was "afraid" to do it as it looked complicated. Then came along 1-click rooting. I did it and was hooked.
As soon as 2.2 OTA came out, I had to re-root. It wasn't quite as easy to do as the 1-click, but in retrospect, the one-step root for 2.2 was very, very easy.
Then came the roms. Thanks to the help of D13 and a few others, I tried my first rom. R2D2. I didn't like things about it, but I did it.
I also bricked for the first time and was shown how to do the sdf file. It worked fine. In fact, I bricked again a few days ago, as I'm playing around with this stuff, a lot, and I might have forgotten to select "mount system" first. No problem. SDF plus back ups cover a multitude of sins!
To make a long story short, I now have played with about 5 or 6 different themes. Some I won't use anymore, such as R2D2 because it wouldn't work with swype, but I have several backed up zip files to switch around.
I think I have so much that I have gone overboard, have become addicted and need serious help! I love this stuff!
Here's a list of my zipped backups:
1) 928Droid Black Glass X: This is probably my favorite one, at this point. It is the most "finished", meaning that I have it just the way I want it.
2) Big DX Serenity (Red): This is the most fun. I like the way the dev has modded apps, especially LPP (as I purchased that). It's pretty much finished, the way I like it. I have a bit more work to do, but I like it a lot.
3) RubiX Focused 0.3:: This is the newest one. I tried it yesterday, but didn't like it because it was too dark and it wouldn't sync my google calendar and it was waaay to dark to view.
I came across the zip files to fix this and how to install them. I like this muuuch better, now. I simply cannot believe how fast this ROM boots up. 10 seconds from the Android screen!
This is probably the least developed, for me. I mean, I don't have much set up, but I can see myself loving this one too!
4) 2.2 ota rooted 2.3.15
5) 2.2 2.3.15 deodexed.
I love being able to do this and I want to thank everyone who has helped me. I'm also happy that I've begun to help others, considering how very, very simple all of this is, once you understand it.
So, am I the only addict here? It's okay if I am. Does anyone else have a lot of themes and roms backed up on their SD? (Perhaps I should further back these zips up on my PC, no?

Its offical. I spoke with Verizon today and they confirmed the news we've heard. If you are tired of waiting for the Inc. You will have the opportunity to switch your order to a Droid X. This is huge news. Inc is slated to be shipped until end of the month first of next month. So whos going to swtich? If the review is as great as Inc. Consider me gone! Im going with the Droid X.

I am trying to figure out how to switch between apps? The expanded manual says to hole the "home" button down from the Home screen. This works to an extent but does not show all apps I have running? For instance I emailed my selt the link to the extended manual from Motorola.
http://www.motorola.com/staticfiles/Support/US-EN/Mobile%20Phones/DROID-by-Motorola/US-EN/Documents/Static-Files/DROID_UG_Verizon_68000202474a.pdf
I click on that link and it downloads the pdf then opens QuickDocs to read it. But if I want to go back to the Home screen for something I can't get back to the Quick Docs app to continue reading from where I left off? I have to go thru the whole process over again and then it tries to download the manual again, so I cancel it and click on the previous one downloaded listed above the download. Then it opens QuickDocs again , but I then have to scroll thru all the pages I read to get to the page I left off at. What gives? It is time consuming and annoying!

The droid looks like a great fun device, but I use my mobile device to help me be productive in a sales position. I have some issues keeping me from pulling trigger on a droid. I use mobile device mainly for work related tasks (phone, email, calendar, etc). Any comments would be greatly appreciated. If anyone else has moved from BB to Droid and has other things they miss (besides BBM) please respond.- Lack of email search for exchange email. Almost an instant deal breaker. Is this in the works to be fixed? - Ability to operate with one hand (phone, email, etc). Very easy to dial a contact from BB home screen simply by typing their name. - Speed of typing. I send emails from my BB even when sitting in front of computer. The BB is very easy to use and type on. - Look up internal users on BES. Great for getting contact info of person at company that I don't have in my address book.

Titanium backup runs every night automaticallyI use SMS Backup+ to send all my texts to gmail automatically Flash new ROM (make backup and clear data and cache Reactivate phone Open Market, wait 30 mins to an hour for the apps to repopulate use SMS Backup+ to restore my text Use Titanium backup to restore all apps (Data Only) Restart phone I know Titanium can restore apps, but I'm worried about compatibility issues between ROMS. Is there a better way to do this? Is there a way to make it restore only market apps, not system apps? Am I missing something?

Can anyone recommend a good app for automatically switching to a profile based on corporate calendar (or Touchdown Exchange) "busy" setting to avoid ringing during meetings. It should switch back at the end of the meeting to the previous profile that was in use. Will Locale do this? The user comments are not too great for that program and it wasn't clear if it would do this so I was hoping to find something else. "Phonealarm" on my old Windows Mobile phone was a great program that did this and allowed tons of other settings as well but does not seem to be slated for development for android.
