Motorola Droid :: New Droid Buyers Guide
Nov 30, 2009
Have there been any posts on a Droid Buyers Guide? I am going on Wed to buy one from my local VZW store, and I want to make sure I get a good one. For example, manufacture date after xxx, or serial number higher than xxx, etc. Have there been any noticeable differences?

I posted a reply with this info but i decided it would be better suited if i posted a new thread about what i got. anyway here's a quick summary.... user manual has well what do u expect. but the launch kit has info from a variety of stuff including prices(2, 1, and no year prices), Specs, Product Codes(SKU, UPC, and so on), Accessories, Target Audience, Guick Start Guide, And SO MUCH MORE!!!! Mostly used for employee training and the like. Anyway its a must see whether your the curious type or you just want to know every little bit about the Droid. Let me know what you guys think.

I've been using streamingradioguide.com to stream talk radio to my pc. You can pick a show and it will list all stations carrying it live at any particular time. Unfortunately most of the stream links are Flash. So I've searched for the station call letters in android apps and they're not there. The links from mobile stream center won't play either. Is there anything for Android that will search for call letters and play the stream?

I've seen the DROID users guide online and of course the one that comes with the device. But there are a Lot of things missing and honestly I don't want to have to always "figure it out". Is there some comprehensive guide available that details everything? For example, I'm using a widget that came with the phone, I think its the Power Control widget. There is one control on there (looks like a Refresh icon). I have no clue what it does. Lastly, does anyone know if Moto, Google, Verizon has a feedback forum. I like the phone and it has some really cool features, but I have some feedback (positive of course) to help them improve it.

I know everything is just starting to come together but is there a guide available that explains the rooting process? Even if it isn't specific to the X I would like to learn more about what I'm doing before I start following any step-by-step procedures.

They sure didn't ship one with the phone. Is there a Droid (or Android 2.0) User's Guide on the web that gives detailed operation on all the Droid functions (including tips & tricks)? It sure would be handy!

I run the risk of getting flamed for this... but I deem it a worthy thread, as things are constantly changing. I haven't found an up-to-date thread that has satisfied me yet.
I recently joined the Android community with my purchase of the Moto Droid. After a few days, I became interested in the rooting process and gave it a go... upgrading to Froyo. There have been several ROMs I've tried out, but I'm very hesitant to try more due to backups.
Will somebody provide me (in words or a link) the best way to backup all of my applications and data when testing out a new ROM? I tried Titanium Backup (and even donated), yet I never have successfully restored from a backup. Some applications and system data restore, but a ton of apps don't install, and I have to re-enter my email accounts (and appropriate sync settings) every time. This and the number of apps it doesn't restore (especially Swype) makes it not worth messing around with.
I read something about Nandroid backup, but that just looked like it was a backup in case something went terribly wrong with a ROM or something of the sort. Also, it looked like in the Simply Stunning (ChevyNo1) 4.2, there was a built in backup script... but I'd like to be able to venture between ROMs.
I want to be able to backup all of my apps and system data (gmail accounts, sms, etc), install a new ROM, and reload all of my apps and data.

There are a few ways to change the color of the clock, notification bar, and pull down menu.
Standard disclaimer: I take no responsibility for anything you do or screw up on your phone.
AdamZ has updated method A (now called Droid Customizer) and it now changes all notification colors. It will overwrite any other changes you have previously made to the services.jar and framework-res.apk files so the manual method is still useful for people who have already made changes and don't want to lose them.
A - [Release] Droid Customizer v1.0 *Updated 3/02* (edit 4/7/10: fixed this link)
If you are familiar with the installation process of the smoked glass themes then this is an option. Has 13 color options as well as 12 font options that you can use.
B - Manually (sorta) change everything. I did it this way because AdamZ's method in A wasn't out yet and I think the way described in method A might overwrite other changes you have made (not sure on that though)
This will probably look long with a lot of steps but it really isn't too complicated.
Prerequisits
Rooted
Android sdk installed and some familiarity with adb
adb info: Start Here | Root Your Droid
1 - Plug in your phone and don't mount the sd card.
2 - On your computer open a command prompt and navigate to the android sdk tools folder.
3 - Type these commands:
Code: ...

Okay, I have received several PM's on this but tonight, someone asked me to give a complete step-by-step walkthrough. It's Easter and I figured I could use the good Karma I have removed the name of the user that asked for this even though they didn't care...I just prefer to keep it anonymous and if that person identifies himself...cool...I just don't want to do it.I figured this might help someone else so here it is.

I'm upgrading from my Droid 1 to the Droid X tomorrow and would like to start my use of the DX with it's new 32gb card in place of my old 16gb card from my Droid 1 but need to know if there's anything required to copy from my droid 1 16gb card to my new DX 32 gb card that would be required or helpful in the DX use.I will obviously transfer music/vids/pics but are there any essential files, apps, etc. that are needed.Or is it a good idea to use my paid MyBackupPro to copy the old Droid 1 apps/data for use in the DX larger memory card or is this not copatible to perform between the 2 devices?

They are at the final battle. It looks like we might have a fight on our hands since the Palm Pre just got the free hot-spot options from Verizon. March Smart Phone Madness Finals: Motorola Droid vs. Palm Pre Plus
The main points that I like to enjoy is: Droid beat out the phone that beat the iPhone, and the Droid got further in the brackets than any other Android OS phone Some of the progress is due to hardware, some due to following (over the Nexus'), but a lot due to the v2.01 (and now 2.1) version of the Android OS. Also, this poll is open ALL weekend - it does not close until April 5th, so we have tons of time...but then again, so does the Palm Pre. Let's have at 'em!

I have the original droid with 2.1 (still haven't got update) the phone has some problems like, restarting, cant update certain apps, unresponsive. i just got the phone in may 2010 an im starting to think its getting out dated. I once had it rooted to 2.2 but went back to stock for OTA 2.2 . But my question is, that do u think i can call verizon and tell them my problems, say its my 3rd droid and im getting tired of it. Since there not making the oringinal droid anymore do u think they'll let me upgrade to Droid X with little or no fee? i got the idea from another post, reading that someone had success with this trick?

I have been using the Android documentation for a few days now, and it is quite good and easy to read. Apart from that I noticed that I missed something, and now I found out what it is: Examples and comments.
If you look at the PHP documentation (e.g. http://www.php.net/manual/en/function.substr.php for the PHP substr() function) you will see many syntax-highlighted examples and comments by users.
Of course there are examples in the Android documentation, especially in the Dev Guide category - they just are not at the right place if one searches the reference for a specific method or functionality. What do you think about this?

I just finished what I hope is the ultimate guide to emulation on Android. I've basically fine-combed the Market and done my best to map out what the Android platform currently has to offer when it comes to retro video game console and home computer emulation. Various Nintendo consoles are covered, of course, as well as Sega, C64, Amiga, ZX Spectrum, TurboGrafx-16 et cetera.
The only emulators I've ignored are those with an average rating below 3. Now to my question: did I miss any good emulators? There might be emulator projects for Android on the web that are not available on the Market? Such as ScummVM, for example, although technically it might not qualify as an emulator. Is there a PlayStation emulator for Android?
Here's the link to the guide if you want to check it out:

I have installed ultimatejuice, and i am slowly getting the hang of it. however, its not exactly self explanitery in use at times.I am sure i read somewhere (no idea where though, i just remember seeing it and deciding i wanted that app!), that someone had set it up so that when the phone was plugged into the usb charger (i.e. computer or car charger), then bluetooth would be turned on. but when it was unplugged or plugged into the wall, bluetooth was turned off.i am 99% sure that juicedefender was the app he used for it, but i cant work out how to do it.so, im wondering if its because i cant work out how to use the app, or if i have the wrong app?and even if i do have the wrong app, has someone come up with some sort of simplified user guide for it?

I have a weird problem with the hitchhikers guide soundboard app on the market. I have a non rooted HTC Magic (running 1.6 donut) and live in New Zealand. I was able to install an early version of it (1.2) I think. So the app would appear in the "My Downloads" section. In the description of the app, I could then see the app was getting upgraded frequently. But I never got any notification to upgrade. When I then searched for the app, it no longer appeared for me in the market. Its like somehow its been geo restricted, or perhaps no longer compatible with my phone, so it had disappeared for me to download/upgrade. I can even goto the authors website & try installing the app independent of the market, but even then a dialog box pops up saying "Cannot install on this phone".I can see other people are downloading and using it, but am wondering if other people are having any issues finding & installing the app? Perhaps using the HTC Magic? You can search for "hitchhiker" in the Market, or goto the authors site Coulson.mobi
