Motorola Droid :: Interesting Discovery About Soft Keyboard

Nov 10, 2009

There has been a lot of discussion on Engadget about whether the soft keyboard has multi-touch. Engadget insists no, and Rob here insists yes.I think I discovered where the problem lies. Josh at Engadget was saying that you had to release one key before pressing another or they would not both register. Rob said in his review that you COULD press them at the same time and both would register. I think I found out that both are right.I did some experimenting and would love to see whether others come to the same conclusion. It seems that when the keys are far enough apart (more than a couple of keys away), then you can, indeed, press the second before the first is released and they both register.BUT, if the keys are close to each other, it will not do this. You have to release one key before pressing the other.I think this must be to avoid accidentally hitting two keys with one finger. So, whether you think this is a good feature or too much babysitting of our typing abilities, it does seem intentional.

Motorola Droid X :: Possible To Install A New Soft-keyboard Thats More Traditional?

Sep 24, 2010

Considering moving from the Droid 2 to the Droid X. I cant really make up my mind, but I dont really like the D2, but I cant really explain why. I think its the form factor itself. Portrait keyboarding isnt good with my big thumbs, the screen is narrowish.

Anyhow, played with one at the Verizon Store last night. Wish they had one without the damn teather cord on it LOL. I noted on the landscape-keyboard, the spacebar is all the way on the right. Is it possible to install a new soft-keyboard thats more traditional?

Still struggling,

Motorola Droid :: Swipe To Dismiss Soft Keyboard - Since Froyo

Aug 23, 2010

Ever since I updated to Froyo I've had trouble dismissing the soft keyboard by swiping down - frequently getting two additional characters typed (the one where the swipe started and the one where my finger left the screen) instead of dismissing the keyboard.

I know I can hit the back button to dismiss the keyboard, but is anyone else having this problem, and is there a fix?

Motorola Droid :: Contacts Search Doesn't Open Soft Keyboard

Aug 23, 2010

While in the Phone/Contacts app, I LOVE the search button to open the contacts search box. However, when I press the button, it doesn't automatically open the soft keyboard and I have to first press in the input box. Is there any way to make it automatically open the soft keyboard? It's not a major issue, but it's a slight nuisance. I'm running a rooted Droid with Froyo (FRG01B, manually updated).

Motorola Droid :: Interesting Info Screen

Feb 4, 2010

In a current thread, a forum member asked if there was a way to disable data. Putting my search skills to the test, I found the method ... and a whole lot more. This is really cool stuff. (I thought it was worthy of it's own thread.)

- Open dialer
- Dial *#*#4636#*#*
- Tap on 'Phone Information'
- Press Menu button
- Tap on More
- Tap Disable data connection (Or, Disable data on boot.)

Simply reverse the steps to re-enable your data connection either immediately, or after your next reboot. There's a whole lot more to checkout while you in there.Just be careful. You don't want to screw up anything.

General :: MK802 Mini PC - Disable Soft Keyboard Hiding With USB Keyboard Available?

Jun 22, 2012

I'm using an MK802 mini PC. I don't have a USB keyboard yet.

When I plug in a wired USB mouse, I can use that to click on the on screen soft keyboard.

But when I plug in the wireless dongle for a USB mouse, the Android soft keyboard doesn't show anymore (I guess this is because the wireless dongle supports both keyboard and mouse, and tells Android a hardware keyboard is available, so Android doesn't show the soft keyboard).

Any way to ignore this and always show the soft keyboard? Or another keyboard I can download which will always show?

Android :: How To Develop A Soft Keyboard - HTTP Connections To Synchronize Keyboard Data With A Cloud DB And Other Phones

Aug 13, 2010

I would like to play around with some ideas and develop a soft keyboard for Android to replace the default one.

Is there any general information about soft keyboard development for Android out there?

Any best practices or guidelines?

Can I do with my keyboard application pretty much anything I could do with a normal Android application?
Can I do HTTP connections to synchronize keyboard data with a cloud DB and other phones I have?
Can I open other windows/screens from a key press, e.g. to display a custom input interface different to a normal QWERTY one. If that doesn't work, can I use a pop-up dialog instead?

But this does not work, because there is no relevant view to provide, as there is no View on the screen that takes keyboard input.

Motorola Droid X :: APP - ROOT - Keyboard - Keyboard Manager - Dual Keyboard - Portrait - Landscape Switch

Nov 10, 2010

I tried it and it works so far.

Dev = ne0fhyk from XDA.

From the XDA forum: Link to app page = [APP][ROOT/Keyboard] Keyboard Manager - Dual keyboard: Portrait/landscape switch - xda-developers

Verbage:

Keyboard Manager allows you to customize what keyboard (input method) appear on input based on your phone orientation.
It displays the keyboards you have enabled on your android device, and let you select one per orientation (landscape/portrait).
As your phone switch orientation, the app automatically switch the keyboard.

Requirements:
- Rooted android device (app was tested on Samsung captivate 2.1)
- Root Explorer app, or similar app that allows you to edit the permissions of a file.

To install:
1- Download the app (KeyboardManager.apk) on your device sdcard.
2- Using Root Explorer, move the apk file to /system/app
3- Using Root Explorer, edit the file permissions like below:
-- User: 'Read/Write' checked
--Group: 'Read' checked
--Others: 'Read' checked
4- Exit Root Explorer

The app should be visible in your launcher as 'Keyboard Manager'

Update:
- Added option to disable notification icon
-' start on boot' feature is disabled because it's not yet complete and tested... Sorry for the confusion

Bugs:
-On certain applications (i.e: Messaging on Samsung Captivate), the input window occasionally freeze on orientation switch. Exiting the app, and resuming should fix it.

The app is still in development.

Android :: Why Might Soft Keyboard Not Pop Up?

Nov 12, 2010

I have an EditText control that does not pop up the soft keyboard when the user touches it. The thing is, that I have a number of other EditText controls elsewhere in my application that all work fine, and I cannot see anything really different about this one.The code is a bit complex to post here, but I was wondering if anyone knows of any reasons why the soft keyboard would not appear in some cases.

HTC Droid Eris :: Interesting Conversation With VZW Tech On Silent Bug

May 22, 2010

I talked with a VZW tech just a few minutes ago.I described her the silent bug problem on 2.1.She said she is a Droid user and her daughter has an Eris. She said she had frequent freezeup on her Droid and now she reccomends to do one reboot every day. She says she had not had a problem since she has been doing this. She made a mark on my file about my complain and recommended to try the once-a-day reboot for a week. If the problem persists, the store will issue a new phone.I will try this reboot thing each night, will see how it goes.I am a bit worried about the exchange they perhaps would give me a refurb, and what is the guarantie that I won't end up with the same problem.

Android :: Soft-keyboard Is Not Being Closed

Jun 28, 2010

I've got a problem with my application in that the soft-keyboard is not being closed unless the user pushes the "back" button.I use several layouts which I load using the setContentView method of the application. Some layouts contain multiple EditText fields. The soft-keyboard pops up correctly when the entry boxes are being clicked, but never gets dismissed, even after I switch to a new layout using setContentView (instigated by on-screen push buttons).I found a way of apparently removing the keyboard using the "InputManager" class but how exactly does that work if I don't know which entry field opened/currently owns the keyboard? Is there a way of possibly invalidating a whole layout which would perhaps cause all resources (and hopefully the keyboard) to be cleared? As said before, I currently just use setContentView to load the next screen.

How can I set numeric-only soft keyboard option for a text field? When I set the input-type to "number" it brings a soft keyboard which is actually a alpha-numeric one but already switched to numeric mode. What I want is a pure numeric soft keyboard with big numbers (no alphabets at all). I've already seen this in other applications and but don't know how to do it.

Android :: Next Focus And Soft Keyboard

Apr 24, 2009

I have a form that is working fine with the "Next" flow order when using the computer keyboard with emulator (and probably with the keyboard on the G1) but not with the SoftKeyboard with 1.5.Some fields indicate "Next" with this keyboard, some go to the correct field and others don't.Two of the fields are text and they only give a carriage return instead of "Next."My numeric fields give the proper "Next" key. Use of the SoftKeyboard is a little underdocumented so far (if there is a hidden doc online somewhere please provide me a link to it). There are also some added fields under 1.5 that I have asked about previously but received no answer. These appear to have something to do with the Soft Keyboard.Though these can be set programmatically I haven't seen the proper way to set these flags using XML. This field is the one that replaces "Numeric" which deprecated.
