Nov 16, 2009

Just a poll to see how many apps people have downloaded and currently have in their Droid! I got 20! Can't see going too far beyond that number, but let's see yours This is ONLY for downloaded apps currently in your phone , NOT total apps.

Motorola Droid : Android Apps Vs IPhone Apps

Nov 16, 2009

I know the "cool kid in school" thing to do is make fun of the iPhone market for having 1,000's of 'Fart apps'

But let's be honest at the end of the day it's really not true, and now coming from being a previous iPhone owner and now a Droid owner i can honestly say, the iPhone app market wins by a TON.

This is just a general QUALITY of apps comparison as well.

NO i'm not switching back... but man do i miss the iPhone apps...

Especially facebook.. and others..

You can REALLY tell the difference between the quality of iPhone apps vs Android,

So why am i starting this thread?.. Well i'm hoping maybe a developer could chime in and enlighten us on why this is...

Things i'm curious about-

Is programming in android worse then in the iPhone OS? is that why apps are WAY less in quality?

And you can't give the excuse that it's because things are new, when the iPhone market came out the apps were quality at day 1, many of them were.

So what's the difference? i guess software...

Well i'm sticking with android even though this exists.. in hopes that maybe future Android OS updates and SDK's will improve this very obvious difference.. right now i'm not impressed at all... the apps are all Slow, and they look horrible.

And for twitter? holy crap... iPhone owners back me up here, but the iPhone twitter apps are lightyears ahead of android twitter apps.

Just take a look at Tweetdeck for iPhone, and compare to to what i guess is the best android twitter app, twidroid?

Compare those and you'll see what i'm talking about.

Motorola Droid :: Shortcuts Menus To Apps In Droid?

Nov 12, 2009

I have A LOT of apps on my Droid. Way too many, but that's a subject for another day. Getting to them on the default menu is impossible, its WAY to much scrolling. My home screen space is very limited - the left side is a full screen calendar, and the right side is a nearly full screen task list. The main home screen loses some space to a clock widget, so I end up with only a 4x3 space on my center screen to work with. Given all of the apps I have and all of the functions they do, this doesn't work. I need direct & instant access to at least a dozen things on the home screen, Plus much more a few clicks away. I have thus far found TWO decently sound organizational options for my Droid, but neither quite do it for me. Hopefully you guys know of another one that I have not yet found.Folders on the home screen. Put things in folders.Problems: Despite ability to name folders, Grey folders all look the same, making it harder to quickly grab the one you want when there is a screen full of them.impossible to nest folders (this feature alone would solve my problems)Folders don't auto close, pressing the home button takes you back to the home screen with the folder still open (yet one more button to hit to close it).Great app on the marketplace called "Apps Organizer"Pros:makes a list of all your apps, then lets you assign label(s) to them (like gmail). Then you can create shortcuts on your home screen to a specific label.Lets you select a unique Icon for each label.

Problems:When you click on the shortcut to open up that category, the tray of Icons is TINY. Significantly smaller than normal. This makes reading text labels of the apps "legible", but only with good eyesight. No nesting. No shortcuts to gmail labels, direct dial, direct messaging. So those groups of icons all have to go in the folders the plain grey indistinguishable folders.Temporary workaround:Create a folder for gmail labels, direct messaging and calling "folders" on the home screen.create 1 "reorganized" apps menu folder on the home screen that would link to ALL the apps, organized by labels into 6-8 categories. No more endless scrolling for the "occasional use" app.Create half a dozen labels for HIGH use applications and place those on the home screen for direct access to those categories.None of the options presented REALLY get the job done. grey indistinguishable folders remain, I still have to launch everything out of the TINY icons and text used by Apps Organizer, direct message, email, calling, labels still needs some work. Any suggestions? Am I missing any options in the above, or other ideas that would enhance this spit and duct tape organizational system?

Motorola Droid :: Replacement Droid Not Getting Apps Downloaded

Oct 13, 2010

Got my warranty replacement droid yesterday. Re signed into my google account.Went to market, went to my downloads, saw large list of my apps that should have been downloaded. Went to bed. Woke up this morning, and none of my apps are on my home button.Went back to market, has about 2/3 of my apps saying 'starting download', another 1/3 saying 'installing'.But this has been 8 hours and nothing is actually installed. If I go to an app that says starting download, I can cancel it, then hit install button, and it installs. But I don't want to do this for like 30 apps if I don't have to.Also have tried a reboot, but so far, nothing better.I am connected to home wifi, so good speed. Before I got replacement phone I wiped my bad phone to see if it would help, and apps came back within an hour.

Motorola Droid X :: Apps To Think About For New Users

Nov 30, 2010

so im a huge fan of android and especially the Droid X. Im here to help those of you who are newbies to the Droid X or really any Droid. So here are some apps that have really made my Droid X a very great machine:Non-rooted phones: Astro file manager- simple app that lets you take a look into your phone and sd card memory and its free. Beautiful Widgets- a very nice clock widget similar to htc's stock clock but comes with other widget buttons like wifi and bluetooth etc. Costs about $1.50 but i stole my copy. Cherry Rplayer- a free satellite radio app. ChompSMS- a free txt message app that lets you totally customize how u send and read texts. Gtunes- free mp3 search engine where you can search and download music. HistoryEraser- erases history from your browser and even the market place.Yahoo! Mail- if you got Yahoo! this free app will let you know if you have a message in your yahoo! mail like Gmail does.PdaNet- free tethering app to give your computer internet thru your phone. It is free but you can not access private web pages but you can pay a one time fee to unlock all features. Power Control Plus- instead of the lame stock power control widget that came with the phone you can get this for .99 cents or steal for free and customize your own power control widget. Ring droid-free app which lets you customize your music into ringtones. TiKL touch to talk-if your on a strict calling plan get this..its a free walkie talkie type app that will let you talk to friends anywhere for free as long as your friends have it too. Wheres my droid?-if you miss place your phone and have it on silent this free app will make your droid ring untill you find out where its at.Lancher pro- there are tw versions of this home replacement app there is the free launcher pro and the paid version..paid version gives you access to your facebook and twitter on a single widget so you can update your status or post something on your wall all at once. It also has other widgets such as: twitter, facebook, calendar, friends and others. Free version does not have any of that. Now for you out there wanting to root your phone i have only a couple of apps that are really worth the download: Z4root- free rooting app that gives you the choice to temporary root or permanently root with one click. You can even un-root with one click. Droidoverclock- .99cents gets you this great overclocking app that can make your droid x go from 1000mhz(1ghz) to 1450mhz(1.45ghz) or even underclock if you wish. DroidX Bootstrap- $2 app lets you go into recovery mode to install themes and or ROMs. Well i hope i did some good for you newbies who are looking fir good apps to get the best out your droid x's. Stay Avid!

Motorola Droid X :: How To Keep Apps From Running?

Oct 20, 2010

So, as all DX owners know we have quite a few apps ALWAYS running, whether you need them or not, open them or not.... they just keep running. Why did Android design it that way? HOW to SHUT them off totally - that's the question. I have Skype, Wether, Contacts, Social app (Face book), Calendar, Sync Service, Google Messaging Service, and many more running ALL the time. And there are apps in my Tray, that are factory set, which I'll never use. How can I Delete them.

Same with the standard messaging app - I use Handcent. Another example is Verizon Visual Voicemail - I don't use it but it's there all the time. When my Droid starts getting laggy, I just know to launch Task Killer and kill the apps that I don't need.

Motorola Droid :: What Are Your Favorites Must Have Apps?

Nov 19, 2009

I love shopping on the Android market for great apps =) share with us your favorite apps on this thread =) Mine:Credit to androidforum for many of these app suggestions. See here: Helpful Links and Info for Motorola Droid Users My favorite Droid apps (3 tiers):
Tier 1: On my home screen (most useful/most potential):
Gdocs notepad (syncs with google docs, others use ak notepad)
Gtasks (syncs with google tasks on gmail)
LockPattern OnOff (careful, don't forget your pattern, can brick your droid this way - google login to override pattern lock does not work on some droids including mine. Hopefully they'll fix this soon)
Shopsavvy vs barcode reader
Keyring
Pandora (or last.fm if you prefer)
Weather (that's the full name, i like their widget better than all others)
Power manager full (may want to wait till they fix the bluetooth toggle to buy, but i like having dif power profiles to switch to for home vs out and about - i place shortcuts to the profiles on my home screen and oneclick to activate. Alternative is 'locale' but locale doesnt work very well for droid)
Bluetooth toggle for droid (using this till power manager fixes itself for bluetooth)
Advanced task manager (i like that there's auto-end on the full version...saves me the trouble of closing programs manually. Is also a great easy interface for uninstalling programs)
Gps status (i use this for remembering where i parked my car, free and better than other parking apps. Just go to 'radar' view and click 'mark')
Meebo IM (better than IM+ lite, free, create a meebo acct and just sign into one acct and you'll have all your IM including facebook chat!)
Google navigation (included, it takes a while to get used to, but the key is making a 'my maps' on google maps on your computer, hitting 'layers' on google nav and 'more layers' and choosing your 'my maps'. Easier to get places this way than thru 'contacts' in my opinion. Also try mounting the droid vertically for gps use, i like it because you see forward more rather than to the sides - i wonder why other gps dont do that, it makes so much more sense!)
Buzzlock
Where
Google voice
Quickpedia (wiki reader, better than the rest bc font size adjustable)
Gmote (havent tried yet but looks promising)
Funny jokes (heh heh)
Easy dialer (my go-to for making calls to family and friends quickly)
Battery widget (this is the exact name)
Cardiotrainer (better than andando i think)
Bff photo (facebook photo albums of friends)
Instant lyrics
World weather (i use mainly the widget x 2 to see the time in asia so i know when i can call family and weather in chicago so i can gloat at my freezing friends =)
Facebook (from facebook inc)
SportsTap (best sports app. Period.)

Tier 2: Not on home screen but good to have:
Owner
Saymyname donut (talking caller id, make sure to get donut version, not the old one)
Ringdroid (make own ringtones)
Tone picker (set anything as a ringtone)
Where's my droid

Tier 3: Other useful apps:
Shazam
Places directory
aCar (mileage, maintenance, etc)
Astro (file explorer manager)
B-folders (for keeping sensitive data, can't speak for security, but better than nothing)
Backgrounds
Bible (all Bible versions, but needs data connection)
Dockrunner
Documents to go
gStrings (great free guitar or other instrument tuner)
Guitar chordz
Mabilo ringtones (a team, airwolf, stargate...need i say more? =)
Movies
My coupons
Prayers to share (share and pray for requests anonymously)
Poke a mole
Robo defense
Amazon
Amazon mp3
Motorola media link (program for your pc, havent used yet but looks to be best solution for syncing music)
