Motorola Droid :: Baseband Version Is Effecting Battery Life?
Aug 28, 2010
I'm currently using BBv.4 on my rooted Droid1 and I am still using the old baseband that came on the original stock ota 2.1 update1. I am always looking for ways to get more battery life out of my phone and that got me thinking. Technically I'm new to the whole smartphone scene and didn't get the whole hype about it until I got my Droid back in Dec. And since then have spent many hours learning about linux and researching the Android OS. Eventually I'm going to get into application development and coding. Everything I know is from research and trial and error on my Droid. The question I have is concerning the possible link between decreased battery life and the new baseband that is being pushed with the official Froyo ota update. I have not updated to an official 2.2 version so I can't compare the battery life between the two myself so I'm wondering if any of the more knowledgeable members of the forum ( you know who you guys are, lol) can help me out with this. The reason it is eating at me is because on Petes website there is a post on the forum about updating the baseband to the current version being used by Verizon instead of the one that was out in june with the same number. In the post it states the binary code is slightly different in the newer version. Could it be that something in the new version is effecting the battery life? Also, what is the downside of not updating my baseband if everything seems to be working properly. Sorry for such a long post but my mind is hungry for knowledge.

The internal meter says it is due for charge long before its out of juice. Battery Left widget will give accurate voltage levels, but it too is fooled, even after proper calibration.

If you have received the 2.1 OTA from Verizon, can you tell us your baseband version, kernel, build #, and software #.
Just to compare those to the 2.1v3 leak to see if they're the same.

Does anyone else find that their battery does best at like 60%-70% charged and when it gets below 40 it moves a lot quicker? Also I've done 3 full drain and full recharges so far and my battery has improved sloightly each time, do you reccomend I do it again or is that just bad for the battery?

Background info:
- I'm running the "Battery Left" widget and I have it displaying "estimated percentage left", "system percentage", and "estimated time left until dead".
- I listen to A LOT of Slacker Radio.
My issues:
- I was previously getting about 19+ hours out of a fully charged battery. 2-3 days ago I started having issues with the widget (I think it may have started when I installed an update to the widget) so I recalibrated it to no avail. Then I uninstalled it and reinstalled it. Within a few hours it claimed that it was getting accurate readings (when I first installed the widget weeks ago, it took days to get accurate) and now says that I should be getting 9 hours out of a fully charged battery. I know that can't be right so I'll see how the widget adjusts itself over the next few days, but, any thoughts? (I know a lot of you guys use the same widget and know how it works...)
- Also, In the first two hours of my phone being unplugged this morning, it went from 100% to 70%. I did run Slacker for about an hour and a half of that time, but could it really drain the battery that much that quickly? And I noticed that when I close Slacker, if I go into phone settings, applications, running services - there's still a Slacker update thing running in there. Could that be draining the battery too, even if it's only checking for updates?
- I really don't run a lot of stuff on this phone. I keep wifi and gps turned off. I use bluetooth only a few hours each night. Minimal web browsing. Although, my POP email gets checked every 5 mins (but I just changed it to every 10) and I do use gchat and text a decent amount, but I'd say overall, it's "light" use (except for Slacker which could be a huge drain, right?)

The update had to have helped. Never got battery life like this before. I'm at 14 hours 36 minutes and 60%! I do power off the phone at night when I go to bed and plug it in.
voice calls 40%
display 27%
phone idle 10%
cell standby 9%
browser 6%
android system 4%
android os 2%
backgrounds 2%
I have no task killer. GPS and wifi off. Screen brightness on 4%. Twice today I turned off News Feeds and Skype. But they keep turning back on.

I have had my DX since it came out in July. I work in a Rural area in a Cinderblock and brick building so my reception when I am at work sucks to say the least which I know kills my battery, but I have tweaked it enough that I get about 18 hours of battery life during a normal day. The problem I have noticed is that about once a week my battery goes from 80% to 10% in about 20 minutes and the back of the phone gets warm. If I pull the battery for about 10 min. It works fine for another week or so. Any one else seeing something like this?

I was all for going with Sprint from ATT to get the Evo, but with all the negative reviews of the battery life, I'm thinking about going the verizon Motorola Droid route. As you can tell the battery issue is a huge deal for me, is the Droid's battery life better than the Evo's?

Well lately my battery life has been horrid. If I am lucky I get 7-8 hours. That's with little to no internet use and just texting. Like now I'm at 70% and my phones been unplugged for 1 hour and all I have done is text a little and browse Facebook via the app for a little. I'm using BB .4 with the stock kernel. I was gettin better battery life than this before.

I just rooted last night and today my battery life has been horrible. It has been mostly idle for the entire day (since 6am, that's when i woke up) and yet it is now under 20% (at 5pm). Anyone have similar issues? Before it would last at least 20 hours...

I'm going on a hike this weekend and thought it'd be a good time to test out either Google Tracks or CardioTrainer to see elevation gain, time, speed, etc. The hike should last about 4 hours. How will my battery hold up with the GPS on the whole time? Assuming these apps have the GPS constantly draining the battery, which I imagine they do.

I've tried BB 0.4 with two different kernels no good and kangerade 5.0.9 think. Still no good. Display is always on lowest setting possible but battery usage for display is well over 50. Only lasting 8-12 hours. First 10% drains in 10 minutes. Wtf!!! Overclock widget hasn't helped. And haven't tried setcpu. No credit card. So does setcpu improve battery life dramatically? Never had a problem with battery life before rooted Froyo. Ne suggestions? I just saw a new SS rom and new Chevy kernel. Anyone have any luck with them yet?

I have had this phone for a little over 4 days now and it is by far the best smart phone on battery life that I have ever owned. Yesterday was the best day yet, I pulled the phone off the charger at 7am yesterday and forgot to put it back on the charger before I crashed out last night. This morn I was woken up to its alarm clock, got ready, headed out to work and the last 20% warning ding'd at 6:45 this morning. My use through out the day consisted of a few short phone calls, the wifi was on all day, I played an hours worth of home run derby, I watched a few you tube videos, surfed a little net, and I have all my accounts synced up to the Motorola widgets (facebook, myspace, yahoo, hotmail, google, and twitter). I also have a live wallpaper running, lots of widgets on my home screens, and I am running the automatic battery profile ( default factory setting). Oh and my phone service is not that great at my house. In the end I my battery never hit the "red" and was a little over 24 hours of battery life before I put it on the charger. I have read threads about poor battery performance and I cant imagine why my battery performance is so good, and with such a huge screen. With that amount of use, I would only get about 12 hours of battery life from my Droid 1.

I was just wondering what settings I can tweak to improve the X's battery life after the 2.2 update. I do not want to root or uninstall bloatware, though (I did that with 2.1 and had a bitch of a time getting the OTA 2.2 to install correctly).

Received the update this morning, usually I would be at 90 or 80 percent after a couple of hours leaving the charger. Even if I was listening to music and browsing. People have been saying I'm still at 100 percent after 4 hours of playing with the phone. I was at 90 after 45 minutes after unplugging the charger. Did my battery just get worse? Anyone have this problem?

Disable the auto-screen-dimmer, immediately. Remember, even though this shows no process it still has to compute how much/little light it sees and then apply it to the screen. Kicked the brightness down to the lowest and my battery usage went from 60% screen to about 25%, how it should be.

So what are tge top killers of the battery? I know the obvious one is the screen. What else drains a huge amount of energy? Do things like multiple news feed widgets drain a lot of energy? I heard leaving GPS on absolutely wrecks your battery life as well.

My battery life didn't immediately improve. But it took a few hours for my phone to work the bugs out itself after the OTA update. I have been on this phone for 4 hours uncharged and I'm at 50%! Normally, my phone would be plugged in and getting hot.
