Jelly Bean :: HTC One - Google Maps Does Not Have Permission To Use Your Location
Dec 18, 2013
I get a message saying "Google Maps does not have permission to use your location". I try and follow the directions under "help". No luck.
HTC location information is turned on as is Google location information. I have had the phone for a few months but never used anything requiring location (my cars have navigation, I don't really need it on my phone).
Phone is HTC One, the phones OS and all the Google software has been updated. The location on the start screen has never been accurate (I leave my home in town X, arrive in city Y, phone still shows town X as my location until some period of time elapses. This is generally a non issue, because I know where I am) .

This app has never asked for superuser permissions before, but today it asked for it several times. I accepted the request until I decided to see what could happen if I deny it. The app still captured screenshots.

I have a HTC One running JB 4.1.2. I am confused by the location settings available in various places in jelly bean. In my previous phone running gingerbread, all the location related settings were under 1 tab. In JB, its under various tabs and apps. I am wondering what purpose some of these settings cater to. I am listing all the location related settings available in JB 4.1 below:
1. settings > Accounts & Sync > Google > Location settings > Let Google apps access your location.I believe this setting has to be enabled for google services such as maps, google now, google+, etc. to function.
2. settings > Location > Google's location service the description is given as 'allows anonymous location data to be sent to google. Also allows permitted apps to use data from sources such as wifi and mobile networks to determine your approximate location.'
settings > Location >Location & Google search.Description: 'Location used to improve google search results and other google services'
3. Google maps > settings > location settings > Under background location reporting > Location reporting (has 3 options: automatically detect my location, update location manually, do not update location)
Google maps > settings > location settings > Under background location reporting > Report from this device. If you use the above location reporting option and use same username for multiple devices, on whichever device you select this option will only report location.
There are also other options under this setting like enable location sharing, enable location history, etc. From my research, i found out if you wish to use maps and like google search results tailored to your location, then 'Let Google apps access your location' and 'Location & Google search' setting need to be enabled. Also for information, i have disabled 'Location reporting' setting listed in No .3 by selecting 'do not update location' and also disabled all other location settings listed in No. 3. But it has not affected google maps, google search, weather, google news.
I wish to know what exactly 'Google's location service' setting listed in 2 and 'Location reporting' setting in 3 does. Which apps do they exist for? I am asking this because some of these location settings i have listed above appear to have similar functionality going by their description (though that would not be the case) and i wish to know the difference. I also wish to safely disable some of these settings to conserve battery but without affecting functionality of apps like maps, search, news, weather.

on my Nexus 4, it seems like the location is checked quite frequently by the phone, even if I'm not using an app that needs location, and even if the screen is off.
I don't want to turn off the Location Services, I just want my location to be obtained when I use Maps.
Anyway I can do that? I have already turned off location for Facebook and other annoying apps using App Ops. I basically don't want my location to be obtained when the screen is off.

I have a Rogers Magic on the AT&T network here in the US. Its a 1.5 system.
On my old phone, the BJ-II running WM6, in google maps I could get my not-so-accurate-location from the cell tower. It wasnt aGPS, it was just a rough guesstimate of where I was at.
With this magic, is this functionality just not possible? It seems the only way to get a rough estimate of location is to use wifi of gps.
The igoogle web page is able to get my location though, it knows what city Im in, and its not using wifi/gps to do this, so I dont see why google maps isnt doing the same thing.
Also, I'd like to upgrade to 1.6 but I dont know in my phone is CRC1 or CRC24 or 32a or 32b.
my baseband ver is 62.52S.20.18U_3.22.20.17
my kernel ver is 2.6.27-dd63d1eb u70000@Android-X01
my build num is 2.16.631.6 146733 CL#33776 release-keys
How can I find out my CRC number and the 32 #?
Also, how do i manuall close apps? the "stop app" in "manage applications" isnt working for any of my apps

Is anyone having issues with Google Maps being able to pinpoint your exact location while using the Evo?I used to use Google Maps all the time on my MyTouch, and it would always find my exact location with no problem. But I used it for the first time today on my Evo, and it was always a couple of streets off (not "general" location with the transparent blue circle, but "exact" location w/no circle). This is very inconvenient when using Navigation because it keeps wanting to redirect from a place that I'm not at.I made sure my GPS was on before I started using Maps. I haven't tried using Sprint Nav or any other Nav apps, so I'm not sure if it's a problem with Google Maps, or the Evo GPS.

In system settings, I have Use GPS satellites unchecked but Enable assisted gps checked. Now on my old blackberry, if I didn't have gps turned on, it would still find my approximate location to about a mile using cellular networks. On google maps on the Droid X, google maps doesn't find me at all and simply gives this error"Please enable a my location source in system settings".I don't want to enable full GPS for simple things like finding a local restaurant as approximate location would be fine with this

My Location on Google Maps is about 3 miles off my actual location. Is this normal? I don't know how some of you use it for directions when your actual location is this far off.

I am having trouble with Google Maps in my HTC Desire. When I look at My Location, it is completely wrong. When I rotate my phone, the arrow turns round, but the location is nowhere near where I actually am. Anybody have any idea what I can do about this, as I really need to use this feature.

I have one problem with Google Maps, while opening them at some location. How could that be possible for user to specify city first (e.g. type in EditText field "London") then press a button and see London on the map? I've succeded in opening GMaps at some pre- specified location, but only using coordinates. Cannot find anything on topic.

I just tested out Google Maps with GPS enabled. it correctly displays my blue dot as to where I am, but I've noticed I have to manually scroll the map when I "drive off of it". Obviously, that's not an option while driving.Does anyone know of a setting that will allow my dot/location to remain centered in the screen while the map scrolls?

I opened google maps and my location is not accurate at all. I understand that if I turn on gps options it becomes much more accurate, but it's a real battery eater. coming from a 2 year old samsung mysto on Helio network that ran google maps down to the meter for me (and only needed to be recharged every 4 days) it seems like this should work better.Am I missing something? That little mysto couldn't have been running active GPS pinging the whole time. What made it so much better at locating?

I've been working on an application lately that is using GMaps to display a location that is stored in the devices database. However when no location is available (no GPS signal is available) the user can go through an edit wizard and at a certain point he can add a location himself. I already have to code to display the stored location, but is it possible to write something so the user get's to see a map and when he clicks/touches on a certain area a map pointer appears and the location is stored. Is that possible in any way? Is there any good online documentation available? I searched through this group and on Google but couldn't find anything usefull.

I got a new Wildfire about a week ago and I've been loving it, I used it in London and at home here in Norfolk with no problems until yesterday. All of a sudden my weather location changed to Sheffield. When I went into Google Maps it locked my location to be a park on the outskirts of Sheffield then after a few minutes it would find my real location. I turned off Wifi and using Wireless Networks to locate and it stopped doing that in Google Maps but wouldn't change the weather location and sometimes when I'm using Foursquare it will come up with a random list of places near Sheffield. This morning I wake up, turn on my phone and it decides it's in Aberdeen where apparently it's sunny. That's on the other side of the country and I just can't shake it off my weather gadget.

I'm having trouble trying to find a way to guide a user from one point on a map to another. I can add the locations I want to the overlay. I want the user to be able to pick a location and be guided through the streets to that location. Does anyone know how to do this, or is it even available in the API?

I've been looking for an app that I can quickly launch (widget is even better!), grab my current location using GPS and save it to an existing layer in my google maps account. If I can also a label to the point that would be ideal. After googling awhile I found "My Maps Editor" but it looks like it got the ax at some point.
As far as I know, you can view "My Places" from google maps in the mobile version using layers, but can't edit them. Even if you could edit it, it'd be a hassle to load up the layer each time when I just want to mark a spot on the map quickly.
I know you can star locations, but I've been using My Maps/Places for awhile so I'm a little locked in at this point.

I heard that I have to root the device, and then find a ROM for stock Jelly Bean to load onto the device?

I just got my phone and the battery might still be stabilizing, and of course I'm fiddling with it a lot and I've installed heaps of apps, but I can't quite work out something. I unplugged my phone at midnight and this morning found my phone at 70% charge. I also got a message from my provider that I'd used up all my data. I checked and found that my phone had used up (sent+received) 30MB overnight. Google Maps was the biggest culprit - it received 700K but it sent almost 8MB. This is while the phone was sitting on my bedside table! And of course, as I'm driving to work (not using the phone at all), Google Maps was transmitting my location information back to it's servers so that the traffic flow is updated on their systems.
That's cool, but there doesn't appear to be any way to disable or turn off this in GM's configuration, or even exit the app. It seems that having My Location services enabled gives Google Maps (and I'm sure other apps like weather, gmail, Contacts, etc.) free reign to send and transmit data all the time. I don't want to have to disable My Location services completely; I want finer control over things on a per-app basis. Having Google Maps transmit 8MB overnight might not seem like a lot, but when the phone is idle, it disables wireless (to save battery) and thus all data is going through 2G/3G and I'm incurring data charges.

I have a Telus HTC Hero and for a few weeks now my GPS simply stopped working with google-maps. It keeps saying "can't find location". If I use Gps Status app, it shows a compass and shows how fast I'm moving in what ever direction, but for some reason google maps can't seem to lock on. I've tried hard and soft resets, turning triangulation on off, GPS on off.
