HTC Magic :: SD Card - CPU Usage And Battery Life
Dec 14, 2009
When my SD card is mounted in my Magic, the CPU usage is very high (90%+), the battery is very warm (34 degrees +) and it drains the battery very quickly (dead in 10 hrs with very min use).
When the SD card is unmounted or removed, the CPU usage drops to 10% or below, the phone is cool and the battery lasts very long.
Does anyone know the reason behind this and how it can be resolved?
I've reformatted the SD card and removed some of the media files not supported by my Magic but still have this issue.

I propose that we all post our battery life graph like the one I am about to post below. This way we can look at these claims in scrutiny, and perhaps figure out why it is that some people's Evos seem to last longer than others. Here is a graph of my Evo's Battery Charge over 1 day:
Wake up at 7:30am to disconnect the charger, listen to Pandora on the car to work until I arrive at 8am. Idles until lunch time at 12pm. Use the Evo to read up on some news at lunch until 1:30pm. Listen to Pandora while working until 5pm. Drive home while listening to Pandora in the car. Battery starts giving warning indications while driving, and phone dies when I get home at 6pm. Very usual day, and matches what the battery charge graph shows. The top apps of the day are:
System Processes contains mediaserver (2.4% due to Pandora), akmd (0.3% accelerometer polling), and everything else is <0.1%. As you can see I barely used my phone during the day for anything but Pandora. So based on my data, I'd say that the normal battery life for the Evo is under 10 hours. My settings are: no 4g, no wifi, no bluetooth, yes gps, yes bckgrnd data, auto brightness, no live wallpaper, yes taskmanager (ATK, set to "safe" setting. Will probably get rid of this..), no friend stream, no flickr.
I'd love to see other people post up their Battery Usage graphs as well. The App used is "SystemPanel App / Task Manager", available for free in the market. Go into Settings and allow it to Monitor. The screenshots were made by ShootMe, also available in the market.

However, this simply has not been my experience at all, I get a couple of days out of my SGS whereas some others report only getting a day.
I just thought it would be interesting for us to post in here how much battery life we are getting for the amount of use we put the phone to.
There must be some sort of pattern.
My usage:
anywhere between 10 - 30 texts per day.
Several emails - sending and recieving.
a few phonecalls.
30 Minutes of gaming.
Twitter.
Live wallpaper running.
BBC News widget running and Weatherbug widget running.
I also listen to some music but this varies day by day.
3G and HSPDA are left on constantly as is my wireless.
GPS is turned off.
Thats my usage and i get at least a day and a half. Would be interesting to compare...

We've all heard the horror stories (I just bought my Desire and the battery lasts for about 4 hours!) and the fanboy wankery (I get at least 3 days of heavy use!) So today I unplugged my Desire at about 6am and set off for work. It's 7pmish now and here's some stuff you may like to look at. I have 3G disabled, Sync on manual, no "live" widgets (just WiFi and bluetooth) live wallpaper (nexus) and screen brightness on auto. Here's the battery status (rounded up from 25% according to Battery Info in the Testing app)
The breakdown of usage:
My phone was idle for 9 hours and 45 mins:
The Display was on for a mere 2hours and 46 mins
With only 1.5 hours of WiFi:
And 30 mins of calls:
So, that'll be less than 3 hours of usage.

My X recently (within the last week) started having extremely poor battery performance under the same usage conditions as the previous week (K-9 syncs every 15 min, maybe 2 texts per hour, 2-3 emails per hour, maybe 5 total minutes of phone use). After 4 hours, the battery would be at 20-30%
To make matters worse, most functions were extremely slow to respond (contact loading, test message loading, recent calls, bookmarks, any scrolling was choppy, etc.) The delay when trying the most basic things (opening the browser, making a call) was getting unbearable.
I started backtracking the changes in the last week. Although I started tinkering with Google's App Inventor over three weeks ago, that's where I focused. I uninstalled all App Inventor programs, including the Eyes-Free Text to Speech engine. This engine was recommended by Google to do things like read text messages in the Apps you create.
Still no luck.
I decided to investigate the battery use a little more. In Battery Manager, I found that "Android System" was using about 70% of my battery. I was typically used to seeing things like "display" at the top.
I have an app called Android System Info. This showed my CPU usage pegged at 100% (even after a reboot). It never got lower than 99%. The biggest CPU hog was "Android System" at 75-80%, consistently.
This App has a tab to view the log, and I noticed several recurring error messages in the log. They were occurring at the rate of about 180 times per second! The error? "Invalid TTS Engine" Well, the TTS is controlled by the "Android System". The "Android System" was constantly trying to load the uninstalled TTS engine.
I went into "Settings...Voice input and output", and, although the Eyes Free TTS engine wasn't available, the default TTS was not set. I checked the box to have the native TTS as the default, and checked the box for "Always use my settings".
Everything immediately went back to normal. CPU usage is now around 10-20%, and "Display" is back at the top of my battery hogging functions.
Battery life is back to over 10 hours, and the delays are gone.

Since installing Froyo, and also doing a factory reset, my battery life seems much worse.
Also when I check what has been using the battery there are not as many apps displayed, typically just 'Display' and 'Cell Standby' even though I have used the web browser, wifi and Angry Birds.
Maybe the battery needs recalibrating with the new firmware?

This is NOT a "my battery life sucks" thread, i'm just wondering what apps everyone uses to monitor their battery life and device usage.
I'm currently using:
Default Settings > Battery > Battery Use
Spare Parts
System Panel
Battery Graph

I'd like to know the opinions various Galaxy S users have about this phone's battery life and their usage profile. I'd appreciate if you can provide me the following information:
1/ How long does the battery charge last between charges?
2/ What is your approximate phone usage profile during a day?
(Eg. 2hrs of browsing over wifi, 1 hour of browsing over 3G, 1 hour of video playback, 2 hours of audio playback/streaming while browsing etc.)
3/ Other useful information (Eg. signal conditions - poor 2G/3G coverage around my office)

I used to use Nokia phone but just changed to HTC Magic.
1) I can't seem to find any settings that allow me to check talk time, number of SMS sent, amount of data used, etc.? I need to keep track as my plan is not unlimited.
2) Is there any way I can stop the phone from accessing GPRS/HSPA from my provider? Once again, it is cos of my very limited data plan (only 20mb per month), so I would want to control the usage. I notice that when the phone is not on WiFi it will automatically connects to GPRS/HSPA and there is still data transfer even when the phone is on standby mode!

I have one question thats really been bugging me because I can't seem to find it any where over the internet. My question is, Can i totally block off Data Usage through just the phone itself? Is there any possible solutions? I want this phone, but just to have the wifi capability, I do not want any expensive data charges. If this phone is not possible to do so, I know some are, but I do not know which. How about the Htc Touch Diamond? Or any other phones you guys possibly know of that can disable the data function.

The internal meter says it is due for charge long before its out of juice. Battery Left widget will give accurate voltage levels, but it too is fooled, even after proper calibration.

Background info:
- I'm running the "Battery Left" widget and I have it displaying "estimated percentage left", "system percentage", and "estimated time left until dead".
- I listen to A LOT of Slacker Radio.
My issues:
- I was previously getting about 19+ hours out of a fully charged battery. 2-3 days ago I started having issues with the widget (I think it may have started when I installed an update to the widget) so I recalibrated it to no avail. Then I uninstalled it and reinstalled it. Within a few hours it claimed that it was getting accurate readings (when I first installed the widget weeks ago, it took days to get accurate) and now says that I should be getting 9 hours out of a fully charged battery. I know that can't be right so I'll see how the widget adjusts itself over the next few days, but, any thoughts? (I know a lot of you guys use the same widget and know how it works...)
- Also, In the first two hours of my phone being unplugged this morning, it went from 100% to 70%. I did run Slacker for about an hour and a half of that time, but could it really drain the battery that much that quickly? And I noticed that when I close Slacker, if I go into phone settings, applications, running services - there's still a Slacker update thing running in there. Could that be draining the battery too, even if it's only checking for updates?
- I really don't run a lot of stuff on this phone. I keep wifi and gps turned off. I use bluetooth only a few hours each night. Minimal web browsing. Although, my POP email gets checked every 5 mins (but I just changed it to every 10) and I do use gchat and text a decent amount, but I'd say overall, it's "light" use (except for Slacker which could be a huge drain, right?)

My battery life was bad, but it was OK, but in the past few days my battery life is 10% per 30minutes(Just over 5 hours on a charge).I used to get 8-10 hours on a charge.I noticed last week that while it was charging the status of the battery was "Overheat".I think I somehow cooked the battery?I use TaskKiller and kill 95% of apps automatically, I have bluetooth, wireless,GPS disabled and the screen dimmed.I have not changed or installed any new apps.I have not changed the way I use the phone at all.My battery was dead, 0%, and it charged to 95% in about 45 minutes. Is this even possible? In fact in the past two days I have not gotten the charge above 95% at all.

I have been disturbed by how much battery it seems to use while it's sleeping. After much poking around and reading and using various system/battery/monitor apps in a non-methodical manner, I think I found it. I noticed that a process called 'compass' at /system/bin/akmd was persistent in utilization on my phone. While it only ever showed like 1-6% cpu utilization, it seemed to be showing it constantly. I uninstalled a 'compass' app I had DL'd from the market, but that had no effect.
With some searching, I found some threads over at XDA that discussed this process misbehaving in some recent builds, although the conversations didn't seem to be about the EVO. Nonetheless, I decided to disable the auto screen orientation (Menu -> Settings -> Sound & Display -> Display Settings/Orientation = unchecked) and lo and behold, I'm not sure the phone even uses battery in standby now! (exageration for effect...)
Now, this will require more testing, but it seems to be at the root of *my* battery issues. And I'm thinking after reading at XDA that this could be a broad problem. I'm also hopeful though, that this could be a relatively easy software fix for HTC/Google. Especially because I don't particularly find disabling the screen rotating an acceptable long term solution... but one I can live with for now, if it makes the HUGE battery gains it seems like it might.

Would ask this on their IRC channel but I think they would lynch me :P The max stable I get is 748 was running it for like 10 mins :P (768 wont boot) Was running mostly 691 and now 614 . But dont know what will the difference in power consumption be. For example when playing with the phone and it will have to go to the 691 will it hold a lot less? Or its just a minor difference?

this thread directed at those that did not root or unlock their HTC desire but uses its original android.. before i go on, my standard usage is as follows, mostly sms using, a phone call or two, less than an hour of wifi browsing at night.. on android 2.1, my battery lasted roughly 2 days and a bit more.. after updating to android 2.2 via wifi through auto update on the phone. today was my third day after charging my phone to 100%.
its now almost 5pm, on my third day and my battery still has a whopping 40% of battery life left.. so just wondering whether anyone else have this miraculous boost of battery life with android 2.2 or not.

I was screwing around with battery usage today and here is what I found as the bottom line. Now this doesn't mean this is the same for you, but I'm sure you all know that. I changed nothing on the evo besides Gtalk automatically signing me in. (No skimping if you would) and I was at a golf club all day yesterday and had perfect signal strength. My EVO went 23hrs on one charge with decently heavy use. When I went back home (bad signal, 1 bar, no 3G) my phone's battery lasted just about 13hrs. Therefore I think TWS is one of the biggest battery culprits. Hence why if you complain to Sprint, they send you a free Air Ave like they did for me and many others.
