HTC Magic :: Way To Use Phone As A Modem For Macbook?
May 30, 2009I am on the verge of upgrading my phone, at the moment I've ditched the idea of a BB Storm because of the terrible feedback and reviews on bad signal and battery life. So I am left with the Magic or the new HTC Touch Pro " out in the next couple of weeks. I'm on Vodafone UK, i will be staying with them as they offer the best of what I need in my area. I use my phone for my business, it needs to sync with my microsoft office to take my contacts and diary with me, it needs to be able to be tethered (either usb or bluetooth) to my macbook so I can use it as a modem as I edit photographs on location and ftp or email them to clients. I do not send enough through my laptop to justify a 3G usb dongle on a separate tariff and Vodafone don't do a pay as you go dongle that will work with a mac (only the contract one works I've had a play with a Magic and it seems nice, I currently have a HTC Tytn 2(tilt) so i would have to get used to using a virtual keyboard with the Magic. The Touch Pro 2 looks sweet BUT it's big. So if the Magic could achieve what I need then it may be the phone for me. SO....my question is, can I use the magic as a modem for my macbook?

May 13, 2009This is my first time posting on here. I just got the HTC Magic and i LOVE it. Its my first touch screen and even my mates with their iphones are starting to admit its better however i have come up with a problem. I Used to you my Sony c902i As a modem for my laptop connecting via bluethooth. However when i connected my phone to my laptop it says the only services my phone offers is a head set service. I was wondering if anyone knew of an app or something so i can do this. I have searched the app market store and cant find anything.

Oct 12, 2010I've got an HTC Desire which has a Mobile Hotspot App on it - so I can connect my laptop to the WiFi signal generated by my phone.I have "Unlimited Internet" with a fair-usage cap of 1GB. (such a farce, that use of the word unlimited, why don't they just say 1GB?)However, the terms and conditions explicitly disallow using the phone as a modem.My question is, can they tell, and if so, how? Surely the HTTP/HTTPS requests being sent out by the phone are exactly the same, regardless of whether it's coming from the phone or the laptop?If they aren't (perhaps some ID which says this is a phone as apposed to a different ID which will be sent by the laptop's browser), is there a way to make it look as if the requests being sent are coming from the phone?

Sep 9, 2010I need to be able to get Internet in a remote area. I barely get a signal now on the captivate, if I stand on my head and rub my tummy at the same time.
Since I don't think there's a way to add an external higher gain antenna to the Captivate, I'm wondering if anyone has had any luck taking the SIM card out of the captivate and using it in a 3G USB device with any sort of an external antenna?

Nov 23, 2010Is it possible to use a DroidX as a dial-up modem? I'm not talking about a cable modem or some way to get on the Internet, but rather dialing into a remote server via an analog phone connection. Examples being old-school BBSes or RAS/DUN servers.
Most if not all the Motorola Phones I've had over the years have this capability, and given the Droidx is seen by my Linux laptop as both a USB storage device and Network device is there any way to set it up as a USB modem that could accept AT commands from a terminal program and dial out to a remote modem?

Jul 28, 2010When connecting my Evo to a computer, there is an "Internet Sharing" option. I am curious to know, does this cost extra monthly? I know the wifi tether is the extra $30 a month, but will this charge me the same?
I only have interest in rooting my phone if it's the only way to share internet with my Netbook. Wifi isn't all that important to me, and seeing as I've completely and utterly failed at doing the Unrevoked method for rooting... I'm hoping I won't actually have to root my phone after all.

Aug 18, 2009Sadly, the Android Market in Canada does not have any paid apps. I was just wondering is there any way I can put themes onto my phone? I find that it really sucks that I can't use any of the dxtop themes or openhome themes in the market unless I actually have the app itself (which I cannot purchase).

Dec 5, 2009new to this site as never had any problems with my magic till today, my 2 year old to my horror threw it against the wall and the battery etc fell out, Fortunatly when i examined it there was no damage screen wasnt cracked or damaged or anything, however since ive turned it back on theres safe mode in transparetn writing at the bottom left of the screen and the touch screen doesnt work and every time i go into a process such as say contacts , i get the 'the process android.process.acore has stopped please try again everything works like i say i can go online but obviously without the use of the touch screen i cant type, nor can i send texts due to the lack of touchscreen so what can i do HELP PLEASE Or do i have to face facts and get in touch with my insurance ?
