HTC Incredible :: Writing To System Fonts After Root
Jul 2, 2010
I managed to get my incredible rooted earlier today using the SD card trick. Now I am trying to install Arabic fonts + reshaper as seen here.
The problem I am having is that I can't figure out a way to replace the font. When I open up a console and try to adb remount it claims I don't have permission. When I manually mount, with this, it claims that there is insufficient space when I try and push the font. Root explorer won't allow me to paste into the system/fonts directory either.
I know that NAND protection still exists on the Incredible, but is there a way to easily get around this right now?

How to change the fonts on your rooted Droid Eris. I'm not sure if this works for all Android phones, so backup your phone before proceeding. This DOES change key Android files, so be careful. If you brick your phone, it's not my fault.
First of all, go to this website and find a font you like:
1001 Free Fonts - Download Free Fonts for Windows and Macintosh
The file you download should be a .zip, and when unzipped be in the format .TTF. Copy the .TTF file to your SD card. I suggest SDCard/Fonts/. After finding a nice font, download Type Fresh from the Market (free). Also, pick up AndExplorer (free) while you're there. Type Fresh will allow you to change your fonts, and Andexplorer is used as a handy file explorer.
Run Type Fresh, and it will display all the system fonts that Android uses. Touch DroidSans, and it will display a window using AndExplorer. At this point it should request superuser permissions; allow it. Find the folder with your fonts, select a font, and press okay. Press menu and select apply fonts. Allow it to reboot your phone when it asks, and afterwards you should have a nice new font to make your Eris even sexier.

I changed the default Droid Sans font with Helvetica Neue (which looks gorgeous by the way) and rebooted, worked perfectly. I then decided to change the bold version as well, rebooted, but now I'm stuck at the red Droid eye loading screen over and over again (not the Motorola logo). It just loads for a couple seconds then flashes then repeats. I'm 100% sure I didn't misspell anything and I still have the backups of the fonts in the system folder but how can I now boot into the phone without factory resetting it?

I am currently writing the backend for a service which has 3 clients: browser, android native and iphone native. I am having a little trouble with coming up with an authentication system since I don't know what can really be done on the clients.
I am using django + twisted for the backend.
Basically, I am going to be writing RestfulAPIs to open up for the clients on both phones to call.
Now the real question is, how should I come up with an authentication system?
I have thought about using sessionids, this works very well with the browser and I can use django's integrated app for that.
However, I don't know if it's possible for both the iphone and android to obtain a unique sessionid on the handset. Should I write an API call to distribute unique sessionids?
if that's the case, is it possible for me to still use django's authentication system since a lot of the stuff here are customized? ( I am not even using a rdbms - I am sticking with mongodb, so I was on the verge of dropping django's authentication app ftm).
I have looked at foursquare's API and their basic auth method requires you to pass in user:password in every http request header. That adds 1 additional authentication each call which can kind of seem excessive.

I'm in the process of extending monkey for software testing purposes, so I would like to replace the current monkey.jar which my own compiled monkey.jar in the emulator. The current monkey.jar is
located at /system/framework/monkey.jar.
When I try to run the following command:
adb push monkey.jar /system/framework/monkey.jar
I get the following:
'failed to copy 'monkey.jar' to '/system/framework/monkey.jar': Out of
memory'
How to replace the current monkey.jar?
This actually works if I'm running Android 1.6 in the Emulator, but nothing after that.
Yes, i've tried 'abd remount'
This is not a .jar specific issue. I can't push any type of file to /system/framework

I was sitting at my desk and work and saw the "System Update" notification pop up on my phone. I grabbed my phone, stood up, and showed my coworker. Unfortunately, in doing so I accidentally pressed "Update Now." I had planned to post-pone the update until I got home so I could Unrevoked Forever and S-Off. It's currently in the middle of installing (little ! icon w/ the Android guy next to it). I guess I'm going to lose my root. Any idea how long I'll have to wait to gain it back?

So what I'd like to do is take fonts from some of the free font packs available from the market, and use them as fonts in Beautiful Widgets.I've installed them, but BW doesn't see them. I've copied the font .apks over to my sdcard so I can play with them, but from there I'm lost. Do I pull the fonts out of the .apks with 7zip and push them to a particular directory in adb?I could also be completely wrong and not know what the hell I'm talking about. Any advice would be great.

I'm after a system.img that's going to allow me to run adb shell sessions as root. That's all I need. I don't need any of the normal phone fuctions or devices. I'd imagine disabling these would overcome any incompatibility issues... but I don't know.
Naturally, it'd be easier if such an image already existed, but I should be able to follow instructions on how to reconfigure a normal system and pack it to yaffs2 image.

To those who have rooted their Desire, this may sound a bit odd, but just humour me, rooting my phone, mainly because Im very paranoid about getting it wrong, and also it seems like a hell of a lot of fiddling for little gain. The only benefit I really want from rooting is to remove the dumbass demo apps Telstra installed. Is is possible to remove those apps on an un-rooted Desire? Would I be correct in saying that ADB could do it?

I've mapped my android phone as a network drive using Samba and changed the smb.conf file to show the System Root directory as well. However, system root is default set as R/O so to mange files USING my computer I need to change the permission to R/W using a file manager (such as root explorer). This is annoying, as I have to keep doing this in order to write to certail directories.
I would like the / directory (root) to be mounted as R/W as default so that I can quickly edit files on my PC without having to constantly change it to R/O. I want something that will automatically mount my phone's root dir into rw upon boot, without custom apps/having to manually mount as rw everytime it reboots.

Is it at all possible? We want to put non-button Views in our System Bar. We do have system keys for our specific tablet.
One of my friends tried doing it with no success, but I assume he was looking in the wrong places. I don't know what he knows about the process, so I can't say what we've tried.
We're using Android 4.2 .
I guess I should also mention that we've tried this app - [URL] ..... though we haven't been able to find any info on how he got it to work.

I'm trying to root my damn Droid X (pardon my frustration; It's been a long, uncooperative day). First I tried the method found here: Multiple phones - Root them, unroot them - Droid Forum - Verizon Droid & the Motorola Droid Forum
I tried using Step 2 Option A, since I don't have Windows on any computer I own or have access to. I get to the following part before it doesn't work properly:

First I found the problem, then I found this truly ancient post:
http://groups.google.com/group/android-developers/browse_thread/threa...
...with no responses. To browse the file system from the top down I suppose I can simply hardcode the root as a single slash, but I would rather "do it right". Can anyone explain why listRoots returns a root named "/XX" where X is a junk char? It's problematic because that file cannot subsequently be queried for further file system exploration.

Imagine a scenario where you have just system access on android , and you want to continually have it, so you use the su binary, with the correct permission and the setuid flag on, and the owner being system, you do:
Code:
chown 1000:1000 su2
chown 06755 su2
you have the ability to change the owner to system as you do when rooting, and you also set the appropriate permission as you do when rooting,
06775 being the permission code to all have execution permission, and the setuid flag on.
But when dealing with system permission that doesn't work. it only works with root.

I own a complete backup of all partition of the LG P990 with stock ICS, made it with nvflash with a command like this,
Code:
nvflash -r -read <-partition number-> my_partition.img
for all the partition listed in the partition table.
I guess that in someone of that raw image file, (outputted by nvflash), is located the entry system partition, (PartitionId=23 for the LG P990 ICS partition layout).
It's easy for every linux user to mount the raw image file, simply with 'mount' utility.
Browsing them we can find as already hypothesized the entrie android system partition!
If I copying in it the 'su' executable compiled for my platform, it could work?
