HTC Incredible :: Very Slow Downloading Speed Over WiFi
May 9, 2010
Is there any reason that download speeds over my Wifi are soooo slow? I'm downloading a 150MB file from usenet and it's going to take about 20 minutes. Same file from this pc over the same Wifi takes under 2 minutes. I'm not looking for the exact same speed (though it would be awesome) but something more reasonable would be nice. Could it be the SD card is too slow in write performance? Just wondering if this is an issue with the phone, or a simple SD card upgrade.

I am running an N wireless network in my house. My computer is getting 90% signal and about 7 mbps download. If I set my EVO down right next to it (running CM6 nightlies), I am getting almost no signal and DL speed of only 1.5 mbps. Ok, not to ask a stupid question, but since they are both on N, why is my computer getting so much better signal and faster download?

So I just rooted my phone yesterday with the new unrevoked 3 and mainly for the purpose of getting the WiFi tethering app back. Yes, it worked, but man has it been a sad day. I've been reading posts of people having great speeds and here I am trying to enjoy my 0.4 kbps down and 0.3 kbps up speeds, but it sure is hard when other devices can't even use the connection because it's so insanely low. I'm just wondering if anyone else is having this problem?
Is it because of the new root? Is it because of my phone? I used to have okay speeds before with just having a rooted phone via unrevoked 1. I don't know if it's my data network either because it still loads sites pretty well and downloads just fine. It's just the WiFi tethering that is horrible. I tried playing around with the settings (LAN, channels, etc.,) and to no avail, as well as moving around the house, so now I'm stumped.

I have sky 20 Mbps broadband and as I live close to the exchange, tend to get pretty much that. However doing speed tests on my phone while connected to the Netgear router the highest speeds I seem to be able to get is around 2 Mbps. Is there anything I can do to increase the speed to which my phone can download from the router?

During past few day ran three speed tests (speedtest.net) using home WIFI connection. Couldn't believe the download speeds:
(1) 9,885 kbps
(2) 12,181 kbps
(3) 13,372 kbps
My Eris was maybe a tenth of this. Definitely worth the switch. Wonder how it compares to the competition?

My current Incredible was rebooting 5-10 times a day randomly and when I am at work my average data speed is about 90kbps. This is with a -50dbm signal. So my signal is fine but for some reason the data speeds are terrible. At home with roughly the same signal my speeds are what they should be around 900kbps. I wiped it and the reboots haven't happened again yet but the data speeds are the same.
Is it possible for the data to be painfully slow even though the signal is good? I received a refurb today and am hesitant to switch to it because I am just weird and don't like owning previously owned things. But if the data should be fast everywhere I will give in and use the refurb. I just don't want to see my original Incredible go.

My Eris does not seem to be taking advantage of the WiFi speed capabilities of my home network. I just tested my network in multiple ways. I'm getting good connection speeds on all devices EXCEPT my Eris. Here's what I did:
1. I went to Speakeasy.net and tested the hard wired internet connection speed to my PC. The result was 22 mbps down.
2. I tested the wireless connection speed to my laptop, also via Speakeasy.net. Again, 22 mbps.
3. I tested the wireless connection speed to my wife's iMac, also via Speakeasy.net. Once again, 22 mbps
4. I tested the connection speed on my Eris (repeatedly) via a speed test app that I downloaded from the Market. Only 2.5 mbps.
5. I loaded the Speakeasy.net website in my Eris' Android browser and ran the same test. Only 2.9 mbps. So, all wired and wireless devices in the house are getting ~ 22 mbps, while my Eris is getting significantly less. Specifications:
-Eris is running default Android 1.5 OS
- Home wireless router is a Netgear Wireless-N Router model # WNR2000 running in WPA-PSK [AES] security mode. "Mode" is set to the highest -- "Up to 300 mbps."

I just got HTC Incredible, but am still using my blackberry storm and need to for another week or so - do not want to convert prior to the company moving to google mail. Anyhow, I managed to skip the activation and am playing with the phone on WiFi only - problem - I would love to play with some apps, but cannot figure how to get them to my phone! Googling it did not help me, and all I can see is what the apps are, not how to download them. Going into the "Market" app gives me "A server error occurred".
How the heck can I get some apps and play more with the phone prior to activating with Verizon. So far I am rather impressed with this device! Seems like the hardware/OS works very nice! Browsing, doing email some other things over WiFi is blazing fast, and in general the phone interface seems very nice and intuitive! Way better than by BB Storm! Sorry if the answers are out there - I just did not manage to find the right ones.

I've tried Xtremelabs Speedtest (which seems more reliable) and Speedtest.net's app (which uses Kansas City as the server due to Sprint's proxy). I haven't been able to get over 800Kbps down no matter what. This morning I hit a new low and couldn't go over 350 with full service. My Touch Pro would consistently get about 1.2 - 1.5MBps. I would tether with it and use it as a hot spot with no issues. Friends would comment on how fast the 3G speeds on Sprint are. I don't feel I can have the same confidence in the Evo's speed.I'm thinking either there is some aggressive power saving happening on the phone or Sprint's network has been heavily congested since the release of the phone.Are there other speed tests people are doing? I'm going to try dslreports but I know that one has issues on accuracy sometimes.

i just downloaded the speedtest app and i am curious if my speeds are average or sub par. my results are as follows:
down: .21mbps
up: .49mbps
ping: 189ms
i ran my taskiller to kill other apps thinking it would speed my rates up but no real improvements. the funny thing is if i tether my phone via easytether and run the speedtest on my laptop my rates jump to over 1 full mbps. not sure why though

I have 40 MB file in server and i am downloading my file using
HttpURLConnection c = (HttpURLConnection) u.openConnection();
c.setRequestMethod("GET");
c.setDoOutput(true);
c.connect();
FileOutputStream f = new FileOutputStream(new File("trips.xml"));
InputStream in = c.getInputStream();
byte[] buffer = new byte[1024];
int len1 = 0;
while ( (len1 = in.read(buffer)) != -1 ) {
f.write(buffer,0, len1);
this code seems working fine but it is taking too long. is their any way I can make this process faster.

I've only had my Hero for just over a week and am more convinced now that I made the right choice for my mobile upgrade. It's fantastic. I just thought I'd add my 2p worth to the posts about the Hero and my (relatively) short time with it.
My last two mobiles, both on contract, were Symbian. I had the E61 first and just upgraded to the Hero from a Nokia E71. The E71 was a great phone, but the OS is looking old and tired now. I like Symbian very much as a mobile OS, but it hasn't been updated enough to keep up with the times and it is increasingly becoming a frustration to use. After nearly three years, I really needed a change and Android was the obvious choice.
The biggest gripe almost all reviewers have with the Hero is the laggy performance. Well, yes it does start to stutter if you have a lot of apps running and I suspect this is as much to do with the processor as with Android. It's a relatively new OS and will take time to get things working properly. As for the frustration of the lag, I have to disagree with the reviewers, but for different reasons.
If you want to experience a slow OS with constant lag, no matter how many apps are running, you should spend some time with Symbian. It is painfully slow compared to the Hero, even on a bad day. There really is no contest. So, it really does depend on what you're used to and what you expect. I expected similar performance from the Hero, based on the complaints in many reviews, to my Symbian running E71. Yet, in reality, the two are poles apart! I'd never go back to the Symbian we currently have after spending eight days with Android on the Hero. Everything is much faster and looks absolutely amazing.
The features of the Hero as a mobile phone are astounding and I think Android does well in its current incarnation to take advantage of them. I am very, very happy with my choice of mobile. I spent a number of weeks deciding on which mobile to go with as I took out a new 18mth contract and knew I could be stuck with a poor choice for the duration. My fears about the poor OS performance weren't borne out because of what I'm used to using on the E71 and that was a relief.
Like or hate Google, they have a lot of resources to throw at their OS and that can only mean good things for us fans of innovation. I'm really looking forward to seeing how Symbian shapes up over the next few years and whether it can become a real contender for the open OS crown. In the meantime, I am having a blast with my new best friend. I also take my hat off to HTC, they certainly know how to produce excellent phones.

What kind of download speed should I expect with my Droid ERIS? Using my 802.11g wireless router I get around 2mb/sec according to spreedtest.net. I get around 1mb/sec using 3G. My laptop gets around 15mb/s over my 802.11g network. I'm guessing that the difference might be because my laptop has 4gb ram and a dual core and the ERIS doesn't.

I am new too sprint today, my 3G symbol is on but my speeds are super slow (129KBs up 80down). Coming from verizon where speeds are 10 times faster. Does the symbol mean I am in 3G area like it does on other phones or do they not have a 1x symbol. Also keep getting error code 1012 when I update device config. Same with the update prl. I cant pay for 4g when I cant even get 2G.

Is anyone experiencing slow connection speeds when using the EVO mobile hotspot. From the Evo phone itself, I am getting 2 - 3 Mb/s download speeds. When I connect my laptop or ipad, I am getting max 500 kb/s download speeds on them. The phone continues to get 2 - 3 Mb/s download speeds while hotspot is on. I have tried different wireless security settings but all seem to exhibit the same behavior. Any thoughts on how to rectify this? I am assuming the mobile hotspot should be providing download speeds comparable with the native EVO connection.

Anyone else had the experience of internet speed with PDAnet being maple syrup slow? I mean, obviously the Eris is not the fastest phone anyway, but there are, confusingly, times when it's actually quite fast. As a corollary to this question, are there ways to increase 3G/tethering speed?

So I've been developing some stuff here and there for Android, and I noticed my device emulator has a RIDICULOUSLY low connection speed. I'm not talking about performance which is fine, I'm talking just about 'network speed'. What it means is that transferring files to and from the AVD using ADB (which as you may know relies on networking protocols) is EXTREMELY slow, and what's worse, internet transfers are VERY very slow. Therefore, when I'm working with online content (which my app, and let's face it - most apps are about) it's EXTREMELY slow.
It's worth mentioning that those same apps work great and about ten times faster on an actual android device.

This is my first smartphone and my first experience with any sort of high-speed mobile internet, so talk to me like an idiot. But my 3g speeds seem to be incredibly slow and I'm hoping there's something I can do about it. I might've just chalked it up to poor coverage in this area, but I get consistent 4 bars and I've ran SpeedTest.net and XtremeLabs Speedtest and, oddly, I'm getting very high numbers for upload speeds which seems to suggest the network is fine in this vicinity and something else is going on. WiFi speeds are perfect, very quick.
Here are the results of my most recent tests.
SpeedTest.net
Download: 100 kbps
Upload: 855 kbps
XtremeLabs
Max Download: 100.2 kbps
Upload: 223.6 kbps (Don't know about the large discrepancy here)
So is there any course of action I can take to improve the situation? I've not tested speeds at any other locations yet (just got the phone Wednesday) but the high upload speed seems to tell me that it's not just a matter of my house being a 3g dead zone. And of course, this is my first experience so maybe I'm completely wrong with all my assumptions.

I received my brand new SM-P605 (Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition) about a week ago. I updated its firmware a couple time. Now its at PDA - P605XXUBMJ9 Everything was working perfectly fine until I put an SD Card (SanDisk Ultra microSDXC UHS-I class 10) into the tablet.
Since then, the tablet takes about two or three seconds to wake up from sleep (time from pressing the power/home button until the screen turns on). This problem goes away when I remove the SD card.
Questions:Is this normal? What I can do to make my Android 4.3 tablet wake up any faster when I am using an SD card? Should I be using a different type/kind of microSD card?

If something similar has been posted im sorry, I could not find it. Is anyone else having this problem or know how to fix it?

Today, I set my Epic to 4G Hotspot activation. Then I setup my Apple Itouch to connect WiFi with my Epic. I ran Speedtest.net app on my Itouch. This is with my Epic connected to 4G.
Apple Ipod Touch 64 gb: (in kbps)
DL UL
255 871
341 899
263 892
225 880
Are these good speeds Hotspot? It seems like Download is kinda slow, although Upload speed seems good. With the same tower and still connected with my Itouch (but Itouch not running any program), my Epic got:
DL UL
5818 1104
This is the typical speeds that i get with 4G connection with my Epic. Is my Hotspot speeds Ok?

Epic users are all reporting slow speeds on 3G.Our upload speeds seem to be capped at 200KBPS. Can you Galaxy owners check your speeds with speedtest.net app ?
I'm curious if this is just a Sprint issue. Evo on Sprint is much faster ,so its not a network issue.

I don't know what has happened with my phone recently. I had flashed ss4.8, ss4.9, lfy 1.9, and now cyanogenmod 6.1 RC3. My phones internet browser has force closed constantly on every ROM I mentioned above. Its never done this before. I can't even hardly load or scroll through a web page and it force closes almost everytime I use the internet for more than 5 mins. The phone itself has been horribly slow too no matter what kernel I use. I noticed something about JIT in the cyanogenmod settings, could this possibly have something to do with it? I have no clue I'm just shooting in the dark but my phone has been almost unusable.
