HTC Incredible :: Battery - Used For A Week With No Issue Now Dies Within Hours
May 24, 2010
I go to sleep with the phone next to me at 70% battery life, wake-up 2 hours later and the phones dead. This has happend twice now, before this battery life hasent been an issue.
I've used the phone for about a weeks and everything was great, until two days ago (not sure what happend, I did install a 16gb SDHC card).
If the 16gb SDHC card is whats causing the battery life to be good for ~2 hours unplugged with 0 usage, then this is useless..
The GPS is off, WiFi is off, signal strength is about -85dB.
Facebook is set to every 3 hours
Weather Every 6 Hours
Exchange is set to push with a 10kb attachment limit (doesnt seem to even work).
For an example I just charged the phone to 17%, unplugged it for 2m 27%, now at sub 9% battery..
Android - 56%
Cell - 20%
Display - 17%
Phone Idle - 7%
Right now this phone is as useful as a brick, i've uninstalled the weather app and a bunch of other 3rd party things that I thought could have been causing it, but this is the second time now.. My battery life sans being plugged in is around 2 hours tops, with or without using the phone.
Under battery usage the android system is usually over 60%.
Should I do a full reset and if so how do I go about doing that?

After dealing with short battery life like many of you, sometimes only getting 4 hours after a full nights charging and the phone just sitting on my desk,i figured out how to make it go the full day, even with regular use of web and email/sms. For me, it was simply reducing the frequency of syncs between all the various social networks I'm part of. My setting used to be every hour for Facebook, Twitter, and the worst culprit, Flickr. i would notice the phone constantly getting warm to the touch even if it just laid on the desk. Since changing the frequency to manual refresh, my battery is still well over 60% by nights end. YMMV.

My phone reads: 5h 32m 55 s since unplugged. And its at 5% now. Isn't this abnormally low? I used it somewhat frequently but not all the time or heavily by anymeans. Also, GPS and wifi and bluetooth were all off using the android power control widget. My battery usage shows: 42% android system, 25% camera (i took like 10 pics, nothing crazy), 13% cell standby, 12% display, 6% phone idle, 2% robo defense. This is after charging overnight to 100% And I've had the phone since thursday, so its like the 4th charge cycle. Is my battery defective? I read the other threads about low battery life but this seems BEYOND low, this seems defective.

There was another thread about this posted already but it had no poll!! Here's another with an actual poll. I hope this helps all of us get an idea of what kind of battery life to expect with the STOCK 1300mah battery.

Put my phone in my locker two hours before I went on break at work, came back and it was hot to the touch, almost too hot to hold, and was giving me warnings of it turning off. It turned itself off before I could see what was going on. Got it home, threw it on the charger, was completely drained.
I put it in my locker without anything on, had just sent a text message, went to home screen, and locked it. Set it down and that was it. I had just charged it 3 or so hours before and it was on 100%.
What killed my battery life? I checked my battery usage in settings and it was 97% Android OS and 3% something else, forget which and its off to charge up.

I don't really think it makes a difference, but I'm running CM6 with the stock kernel and using setCPU. Normally I have great battery life but sometimes my phone dies extremely quickly and it says that the dialer is using all the battery. Does anyone know what is happening and how I can prevent this?

I'm the author of SystemPanel, which includes task management (killing) features. I've recently noticed a problem with my Droid X where it suddenly will stop accepting a charge. For example, the screenshot below shows that the phone plugged in overnight, yet battery continues to drain: With a bit of testing, it appears that killing the app "usb" results in this behavior occurring. Once it has been killed, the phone will never accept a charge until it the phone is rebooted.
I would greatly appreciate if a fellow Droid X owner could verify this for me. To do this, use SystemPanel (Lite version will work fine, as will ANY task killer, or the OS' own task killer) to terminate the "usb" program. The full name of the process is "com.motorola.usb". Any task manager should also reproduce the behavior if you perform a "end all" or "kill all" operation. Then unplug the device from USB/AC power (if it was plugged in) and then reconnect it. You should see no indication of a USB connection and/or charging if your device suffers the same problem. The issue can then be corrected by rebooting the phone. Here is the process as shown by SystemPanel: It appears that Motorola has incorrectly allowed this process to be user-killable and/or has failed to automatically restart it in the event that it terminates or otherwise fails. Would greatly appreciate feedback on this problem, if this is not unique to my device, I'll be modifying SytemPanel immediately to avoid ever killing this process.

I used to get my battery to last from 8am to about 10pm at night with it in the red zone. Recently though I have been working more from home and now have an airave and connect to the wifi network. Now all of a sudden when I go to bed I'm over half maybe even 3/4 of the battery is left.
My thinking is some of the battery drain may be caused by poor reception. For those of you with battery issues or issues on some days and not others, look at how much reception your getting in addition to use and radios and all that. Maybe the problem is sprints network.

AOKP JB Milestone 1 on Galaxy S3
Build worked fine for a month or so. Then my battery died last week and upon reboot, it got stuck on Initiating Swagger screen. Tried wiping the cache, the dalvik cache and battery stats with no luck. Finally just factory reset and booted a new identical aokp download. A week went by and everything seemed peachy until the battery died again and I got the same problem.
I repeated the process again but really want to be sure this doesnt happen again.

Every time I let my SIIX batt die the phone states "downloading packages" and "entering store mode". A picture of an android shows up, the only way for me to get my phone to work again is by doing the following:
-Plug the phone in and let it charge a bit
-Unplug the phone from the charger and take the batt out
-Put the batt back in making sure it stays unplugged from charger otherwise it goes back into store mode
Only then will my phone go back to normal and charge....

Does anyone know how to get the texts for events to appear in the Calendar week view? It has a picture of it in the manual but nothing about how to do it. My Incred currently just shoes the color of the event (red for business etc) and I want to see what the events are! I have tried experimenting with the length of the title and that makes no difference. Any thoughts?

Since my 2.2 update last week, my wifi doesn't seem to work. It recognizes the SSID, connects, but I have no internet. The status bar shows that it is connected, but data wont load. Everything else that runs on wireless in my house works fine. Is anyone else having this problem or would anyone have a solution to this?

I apologize for this double posting but it was suggested that my post to troubleshooting forum was perhaps more appropriate here. Posted Today, 08:16 PM My Kingston 16G class 10 sd card actually physically cracked and is therefore defunct but Kingston will be replacing it within the week - I foolishly do not have it backed up on my PC. I had rooted my Incredible with Unprovoked 3 and had been experimenting with a couple of Froyo ROMs using ROM Manager: Cyanogen6RG3 and Skyrider 2.5. I had just updated my Clockwork Mod Recovery (and to truly screw things up ) I had made full use of Apps2sd. Now, when I put my old SanDisk 2G sd back in, (all I had was 1 old nandroid backup on it) I am back to: Or, do I want to try reinstalling Rom Manager and do the permission fix - then reflash one of the Froyo Roms. But would that get me Market back? In all cases I'm gonna have to reinstall most of my apps since most resided (at least partially) on the dead sd. Fortunately appbrain has a record of all my apps. - but, from what I understand, there's no way to install the Market, except via HTC/Google/Verizon. So, I probably won't have my new 16G card for almost a week and I'm very open to suggestions as to my best plan of attack. I guess I should also think about repartitioning the new sd - according to the recent lag fixes. Please know that, for the time being, I'm pretty much command line challenged - so (perhaps foolishly) - I am doing all of this on the phone itself. I recently downloaded SDK to my PC and I was just getting ready to try to get the hang of adb, emulator etc - but I'm hoping I can get my phone back to where it was before I get into that project.

On my old BB when the phone was off/died during the night, it would turn on and go off if the alarm was set.It doesn't seem like the INC does that. Is there an app or something that will turn the phone on so the alarm goes off if somehow the phone shuts down? I use my phone as my alarm every morning, and I need it to go off, even if the phone is off/battery dies during the night.

At this rate I'm looking at 40 plus hours!! So there u have it, the secret to long battery life.

I've found that the battery drains so fast, so with doing some research I ended up going to settings > battery, and found that although my bluetooth is turned off, it's still the first on the list of battery consumption at 37%... I'm assuming that the battery is draining so fast because of the blue tooth, but at the same time I've checked and it is turned off. What am I missing here?? (Battery went from 100% to 13% in about 6 hours and all I did was send and receive a couple of texts!!!)

I bought a HTC Desire on a week ago and love it. Only problem is tat the battery is dire. I found it lasts for about 4 hours then it's dead. I am not running any apps or Wi-Fi, GPS, syncing etc. I initialy put id down to me playing with the phone constantly for the 1st couple of days. However by the fith day the battery was still dying in 5 hours or sooner. I took the phone back suspecting a faulty handset or battery. Got a new phone and battery. Still have the same very poor 4 or 5 hour battery life. I have loaded 'Battery Graph' app and you can see there is almost a straight line going down losing 20% of power every hour!!!! This is even overnight when it's doing absolutely nothing. I have also loaded Advanced Task Killer and go tthat shutting down any errant apps every 30mins. Still no improvement in battery life. Any ideas what may be causing this? Neither of the batteries I have had have hologram stickers on them like my old Nokia did. Should the official batteries have hologram stickers?

Screen resolution was incredible (no pun intended), but the phone would get really washed out fast if viewed at an angle. My Hero's display is sharp at any angle, the Evo's screen must not have an IPS display, straight on is the only way to see well.
I did the multitouch test on the screen (the one that the Nexus One and other HTC devices didn't do so well on). It worked very well and didn't lose track of my fingers like the N1/Hero would.
4G in the city I'm in, except, driving around, it was almost not worth it. It's hilly and the signal would go in and out like mad, eating up battery and making applications stop while the phone figured itself out. At a stand-still the phone did fine, driving around, leave it on 3G, I would say. I literally felt like I had an original iPhone 3G on AT&T all of the sudden. I was just staring at the bars waiting for the signal to drop and my phone sit there like I had no signal. And btw, Clear's site shows my house to have FULL 4G, and I do not have a usable signal in my house and barely outside... Not enough of a gain in bandwidth to warrant even trying 4G at home. I'll just stick to 3G. They've REALLY got to work on that network. 6mbps? I am one of the only Evo's out there and I only got around 2.5mbps with a full 4G signal (yes, I know, Clear is used for other things than phones). That's 3G speed, not 4G. Can't wait to see how much switching between 3G and 4G eats up battery life...
Speedtest.net gave up to 2.5mbps download, and around 1mbps upload (capped). This is so-so fast, not really what I would call "4G" as my friend's Verizon Droid consistently gets 2mbps download, and he has a signal everywhere, unlike 2500mhz Sprint/Clear 4G. Also, 4G seemed to just turn off every now and then. I'd have to hit the 4G Widget off/on to get it to reconnect. Didn't happen but once, but still...
The User Interface is very nice, and that large screen makes browsing easy. The keyboard is FABULOUS. Used stock and Smart Keyboard Pro and I could type like the freaking wind. Love it.
The phone doesn't feel slim like the N1 or Incredible. It's a big manly phone. I wouldn't say the proportions are bad. It's all black and thinner than my Hero (pictures to come), but I certainly don't think 'oh my god how thin' when I look at it, like I do with the N1 or Incredible. It is very handsome. All black, very nice front area and very simple, nice back. Innards are red as all get out, of course.
2.1 Update 1 is running on the phone. No 2.2 here.
The camera seems really decent, from my minor use. Flash is BRIGHT for LED, and the sensitivity is impressive with low-light video.
Reception (3G) seems stellar. You won't have any issues here compared to other phones. It has great 3G reception. As for 4G, as mentioned above, we'll see....

62 hours and 24% battery still remaining. This is after my initial period of hammering on the phone and back to my normal daily usage pattern which is like a blackberry user (some phone calls in and out, lots of email, at least a few every 30 minutes during the day and early evening). What this means for me as a blackberry user is that I can now confidently switch over from blackberry to the Evo as primary phone and get through a normal day (16 hours) without needing a mid-day charge.
Here are settings from my testing experience that I wish I had known when I first got the EVO at Google I/O:
1. Add to home sense screen:
widget: Power Control Android
widget: settings, 4G
widget: settings: Hotspot
2. Install android market apps (free):
Advanced Task Killer
Spare Parts
K-9 Mail
3. Run Advanced Task Killer (some disagree, do what you want. I'll revisit and retest this when 2.2 gets released by HTC for the EVO. I don't need sprint navigation, sprint tv, etc. to ever be running since I will use google navigation. I haven't had time to do another endurance test without using ATK and I'm not planning to do another endurance test)
Deselect things you actually want to keep running in the background, e.g.:
voice dialer
voice search
google voice
calendar
k-9 mail
gmail
....
Kill selected apps
ATK will put a notification up at each boot and remember your selections so it's easy to re-kill off all the sprint and other apps you don't normally want 'running' in the background.
4. Turn off 4G and hotspot on the main page with widgets installed.
Note: I found I don't need to disable gps or bluetooth since with streamlined apps running nothing is using them unless I want it to and I want my bluetooth to automatically pickup when I get in the car.
5. Turn screen brightness to low or medium using widget icon. this disables auto brightness but the lower screen brightness seems fine for me. When outside in the sun just click it up if needed
6. Settings Wireless and Networks, Wi-Fi Settings, <menu button> Advanced, Wi-Fi sleep policy, Never.
It's a bit counterintuitive, but I've tested it out both ways and confirmed the articles that recommend this. The phone uses dramatically less power in this state as opposed to auto sleeping wi-fi which turns on the 3G radio. Dramatic as in without keeping wi-fi alive overnight my battery went from like 70% to almost nothing during earlier tests.
7. <optional> Run the battery from a full charge to completely drained once. I'm not sure if this had an effect or not, just putting it in because I did it once before this current long runtime since charge to make sure the battery was properly profiled. It's easy to do with 4G on and watching HD youtube videos.
8. K-9 versus gmail client. I'm seeing much more cpu usage from gmail client versus K-9. I have work email on a host service that supports imap idle (rackspace). The imap idle push seems to really save on cpu usage and my work email delivers as fast to the Evo as it does to my blackberry. I like the gmail client for my personal mail but may end up switching my gmail.com to deliver via K-9 instead to really save on battery. Needs more exploring but it appears the gmail client 'push' is not as efficient as the imap idle.
9. Summary, when you want to show off your 4G Youtube HD or use the phone as a mobile hotspot, just click on the 4G and away it goes. But normally keep that radio off since you don't actually need it and it's a huge power drain. With the widget installed this becomes an easy habit.

Following my last thread for same reason,"full charge battery goes empty in less then 3-4 hours, even with wi-fi,gps, turned off",with tip of you guys,i monitored battery usage with "spare parts" app, first i haven't notice anything unusual: SPARE PARTS gave me very normal cpu usage:1-android system2-browser, but then in the end of list of usage option,i checked other usage & what i found was very interesting:
SPARE PARTS>battery history>other usage>total in all time:
running =time without sleeping 28.1 %
SPARE PARTS>battery history>other usage>since last unplugged:
running =time spend without sleeping 99.999 %
SPARE PARTS>battery history>other usage>total since boot:
running=time spend without sleeping 99.999 %
Now i guess i know why my phone run out of charge in less then 3-4 hours, question is what i have to do about it?
any solution please? previous post:with a full charge battery in STAND-BY, it takes just about 3-4 hours for battery to be empty! help!
also i checked main setting now: setting>about phone>status>Awake time 100%

I just bought a second hand Samsung Galaxy Portal, and it's a great phone and works fine, but the battery is dead 12 hours after a full charge. I had a task killer installed at first but I removed it after reading about how it drains the battery, so I'm wondering what else it could be? I know it might just be an old battery that's lost it's will to hold charge, but what can I check on the phone before I have to splash out on a battery or take the phone back? I know it has some decent tools for monitoring battery usage so what should I be looking for?

Update:
40 hours and it finally died!!
36 hours and 16%!!
33 hours and 27%
28 hours and 48% I'm rooted (unrevoked) BUT I'm not running this over/under-clocking widget, nor do I run ATK or any other task killer! In fact, here's some of my pertinent settings:
- Disabled 4G (can't get it where I live anyways)
- WiFi HotSpot (android-wifi-tether) is obviously OFF most of the time
- WiFi is ON, weak signal to boot (AP in back of house)
- BlueTooth is ON, but not active/paired
- GPS is ON
- HTC Weather/Time Widget is on
- Turned off FriendStream widget
- Not running any silly MySpace/FaceBook/Twitter widgets
- Push Email (ActiveSync from Exchange, average about 100 emails and 5 appts per day)
- Calendar alerts were on vibrate most of the past 2 days but I turned that off as I don't need it
- Also have K-9 running IMAP with a 5 min poll
- I use speakerphone at least 50% of the time, and I had about 30 calls over the past 2 days
- I've installed a bunch of apps, but nothing to manage the system/cpu
- I'm running a pre-alpha of the security/anti-malware software I'm building
- All of the Sprint/factory/HTC apps continue to run, but I seldom use them
- I turned of all haptic feedback (uses vibrate) but phone/sms still vibrate
- All other settings are factory, I'm "keeping it simple"
I've had the phone a week basically, and let the phone die COMPLETELY on Thursday morningish, and I charged it up and used it that day and let it charge to 100% that night. I unplugged the phone around 1:30am, this was Thursday night. It was never this good though, I'm really surprised to be honest! Ok, here's the pics. You'll note a whopping 11 hours of Awake time too. Below is from early this morning when I woke up - 1 day 4 hours unplugged: This is from just a moment ago (10am Saturday) - 1 day 8 hours unplugged: Oh and this morning I did some texts, took a couple of short calls, and 2 videos of my daughter's swim meet races.. Oh I also checked all of my work emails, and I had to send these pics to other email so I could get them onto my computer because I didn't want to plug the phone in yet. I'm going to see how long it makes it before it dies.. Shooting for ~50 hours Again, this was from a full charge and includes 1 day, 2 nights, and now another morning thus far. I plan to do but have not yet done the CDMA-GSM trick, the battery green charge on/off trick, and also monitor my TWS at some point - that will be for the next test though, as I don't want to muck with this test (normal every day use test)Edit: I see now if I disabled BlueTooth I'd save the battery even more, as it looks like it's sucking up a lot of battery and for no reason right now since nothing is paired or has been for the past ~24 hours.
