HTC Incredible :: Apps Run Automatically On 2.2 For Droid Inc

Aug 31, 2010

My Droid Inc just got the 2.2 update last night. I use Advanced Task Killer quite a bit and one thing I immediately noticed is that a lot of programs keep launching themselves in the background. I never saw this happen with 2.1 other than sometimes when I would wake up in the morning, Gesture Search or CityID might be running. Now, I can go into Advanced Task Killer and kill everything and within 5 minutes I can go back in there and have between 10 and 15 apps running. They always seem to be mostly the same ones. Here are the ones that are currently running:

- Gesture Search
- Engadget (This one starts up within about 10 seconds after I kill it)*
- TiKL - Touch to Talk (Beta)*
- Layar*
- Amazon MP3 (this must be something that came with 2.2)
- Svox Classic
- Voice Dialer
- Internet (I use Dolphin)
- AppBrain App Market*
- The Weather Channel*
- Startup Cleaner 2.0*
- EasyTether*
- Handcent SMS*

I uninstalled all the apps on that list with an (*) next to them and then reinstalled them to see if that helped at all. It helped for some of them but I have the following apps still startup after I reboot my phone and let everything finish loading. The ones with an (*) below are ones that the Startup Cleaner 2.0 kills on startup.

- Startup Cleaner 2.0*
- Amazon MP3*
- TiKL - Touch to Talk (Beta)*
- Handcent SMS*
- Gesture Search
- Footprints
- Facebook*
- Google Search

Handcent loads back up in about 15 seconds after it is killed. TiKL loads back up in about 30 seconds. If I wait about 5 minutes after killing everything that is running, I get the following apps running:

- Gesture Search
- News
- Startup Cleaner 2.0
- Handcent SMS
- TiKL

These all load without me doing anything on my phone. None of this happened with 2.1. This is driving me nuts.

I know that some people in here are against Task Killers but I have all necessary programs on my Ignore list. I also disagree with some peoples thoughts that even though a task killer shows low memory, it doesn't mean you are low on memory. Anytime my phone starts running slow, I can guarantee that Advanced Task Killer will show less than 100MB of available memory. That's how it's been every time my phone has run slow.

HTC Droid Eris :: Apps Launched Automatically

May 18, 2010

I use Taskiller to "kill" or end active programs that I'm not using, so as to reduce battery drain. I notice with 2.1 that every time I power up, lots of apps are launched automatically. This wasn't the case with 1.9. Anybody know if there's a way to prevent this?

I hate it cuz I could be restoring 40+ apps and I'd have to manually hit "install" for every one.

Nexus :: N1 Automatically Tries To Download Apps

May 19, 2010

I bought the Nexus One last sunday. I'm very pleased with how the phone works. On monday though, I started noticing notifications popping up from the Android Market. It said some applications failed to download. The only app I downloaded so far was Google Earth. Now every now and then it keeps feeding me with these notifications... I've installed an app killer to shut down the Android Market, but after a while it turns back on by itself.

I have just got a HTC desire recently and am astonished at how short the battery life is. I downloaded the app killer and put the widget on my desktop. When I press it it shows me what apps are running. I clear them all but within minutes of me not touching ny phone they all are running again 8 in total I believe. Amongst the apps are Flickr, peep, footprints....

General :: Any Way To Automatically Delete Apps?

Dec 25, 2013

I have a psychotic need to delete unused apps on my phone (voice dialer, face unlock etc.).

I frequently update to the latest nightlies when I am on a specific rom. However every time I do so the rom will reinstall system apps that I delete because they are useless. To delete system apps I have to use an app which is annoying.

Is there anyway to blacklist apps to automatically uninstall them when I update my nightlies?

Sprint HTC Hero :: Why Apps Automatically Coming On

Nov 24, 2009

I use Advanced Task Manager because I love the one-click closes all feature.

My problem: Why are there so many apps opened/running in the background when I haven't even touched my phone?

Is there a way to stop them from running until I use them?

Apps like Sprint Nav automatically runs. I haven't touched it in days, the GPS is off. This is just an example.

Android :: Apps Trying To Automatically Restoring To Phone

Nov 18, 2010

I have been messing around with some ROMs on my Droid1, every time I flash a new rom it auto restores my apps. It hasn't done this at all until today. I have tried disabling it in my settings but it still doesn't stop. Also when I go into the downloads page in the market to cancel them, I can some of them but when I try to cancel the others if causes the market to force close. I would like to know if there is anyway to stop google from auto downloading them when I sign in? When I turned off the backup it said it would delete the info from googles servers, but it obviously has not lol because I have tried flashing the rom over again since then. I know most people would like this to happen, but I want a clean install.

Android :: Apps Starting Automatically At Bootup

I am NOT asking how to prevent these apps to start automatically at bootup, I could see that there are already a few threads for that and I read them. I am just wondering: why do these apps start automatically?
When I look at the list, I see that I rarely use some of these apps. Is this a setting that is defined within the application itself?

Samsung Moment :: Prevent Apps From Loading Automatically

Dec 4, 2009

I just switched to the Moment and I'm really digging it so far, except for the battery. I was wondering if anyone knows of an app out there or some settings that can prevent apps from loading automatically. Often, I find that apps like Sprint Nav, Sprint TV, Moxier Mail, etc. loaded automatically. I'm getting tired of killing apps all day long to save memory and battery. It seems like my Moment doesn't want to run with more than 30mb free cause it just keeps loading apps until it gets to around 26-30mb.

HTC Desire :: Apps Automatically Start Running When Restarting Ph?

Oct 12, 2010

My desire was taking approx 40mins to power down so I installed an task killer to show me what was running in the back round. I was astounded approx 25 apps were continually running in the backround so by killing these apps powering down now only take 15secs max. However, ive become a bit obsessed with this task killer. i keep checking what is running and there are things on there that i have never used such as "you tube", "news" "talk" etc. Could someone please point me in the right direction about how i stop these apps from running without me requesting them too? I know a lot of say task killers are not essential but it has certainly shown me the reason why my desire was running so slowly. Also one more thing, after powering off my phone, when restarting, ALL the apps automatically start running then? Is there a startup menu that can be editted for example?

HTC Desire :: Apps Running Since 2.2 Update / Automatically Starting

Aug 31, 2010

Got a problem since 2.2 thats bugging me and draining battery life, in 2.1 I'd used Advanced Task Killer to kill all Apps I did'nt want which was fine, more often than not it was just Apps i'd manually started that popped up for killing. Now I find in 2.2 that theres Apps that start running without me even opening them and sometimes its 7-8 Apps at once which cant be good for battery life (and I've noticed a drop in that). Anyone else finding this? Anyway to stop apps Automatically starting once I connect to the Internet for example? as alot of them pop up after I do that, but other times the phones on idle and I select ATK and theres some appeared on it, last thing I want to do is check ATK every 10mines just to save battery.

General :: Stopping Unwanted Apps From Automatically Starting?

May 8, 2012

I have an Acer A100 tablet that I've upgraded to ICS (the upgrade went very smoothly, by the way). But under both ICS and the original Honeycomb, the Android OS has an annoying habit of starting a bunch of apps automatically. Facebook, Google Maps, media players and a whole host of apps that I do NOT want to start all by themselves. I found an "Advanced Task Manager" that will check every 5 minutes and kill unwanted apps automatically. But every time I check it there are still half a dozen apps running in the background that I don't want.

If it were just one or two apps, I would simply uninstall them. But it seems like half the factory apps are intent on restarting themselves no matter how many times they're turned off. My Acer has a very small battery, and I suspect I'd get much better battery life if it would only run the apps that I start manually.

Other than email and the system update manager, I really don't want any apps running in the background. And when I turn an app off, I want it to stay off until I restart it. Is there a way to edit the list of programs that start automatically? Do they all have to be disabled individually? I've checked a few of the apps, and don't see any way to disable the "automatic log-in", "check for new data" or whatever each program might call it's annoying insistence on starting whenever it wants to.

General :: How To Automatically Have Apps On Drawer In Apex Launcher

Feb 21, 2013

MY QUESTION - APPS IN APEX LAUNCHER - Nexus 4

When I install an app (which is typically via the Play Store) the app icon does not end up on my home screen. Or what I think Apex calls a drawer. Occasionally an app does appear there automatically, but perhaps a couple out of the 50 or so apps I've installed.

The only way I have found to get them onto my drawer (or home screen) is I have to hold my finder on the screen and the "Add to Home screen" menu pops up. From there I can select "Shortcuts" and from the top of that menu I can select "Apps". I can then select just ONE app to appear on my home screen. But the thought of doing this for every app doesn't make sense to me. Is there a way to get them there automatically?

Perhaps I am completely misunderstanding the concept of the home screens. I am switching over from iOS, and there one organises all apps on home screens. Perhaps on Android the home screen is not meant for storing and accessing all the app icons??

General :: Stop Apps From Starting Automatically / Overriding App Permissions?

Nov 2, 2012

Some backround on this post. I own 2 android devices, a Samsung Galaxy i9003 and since yesterday, a Nexus 7.

I have ditched my Galaxy as a phone and gone to Blackberry due to battery issues, and apps on my Samsung draining the battery from full to empty in the space of a few hours, so I am now very careful about what I install. Since removing almost all the apps (and the SIM card) from the galaxy, I now have a battery live measured in days (including watching video) rather than hours just sitting doing nothing...

I understand the use of apps auto-starting themselves to provide notifications, such as Facebook, Twitter & Accuweather, but even though I do use these apps for what they are, I do not need them running all the time to provide a notification: The added "work" in starting the app to check updates is worth the extra battery life I get, as if I leave things alone to be automatically managed, my battery life is divided by 10... and having to flip the phone in and out of flight mode is a pain... (especially when you forget to activate it in the afternoon after charging and at 3 AM in the morning you have no battery left to call a taxi...)

So, what I would like to understand is this: Where does android store the information on autostarting applications? Even if I use a task killer, some apps will restart later on. Android must have some sort of task scheduler to restart registered apps after a certain amount of time has passed or on certain events.

how Android manages this list - and more importantly, how to change it, and also if there is any way to override the registered permissions of an app once it has been installed?

General :: List Apps With (Automatically Start At Boot) Permission

Aug 28, 2012

Is there a quick way to show all the apps installed on my Android device which have the "Automatically start at boot" permission?

I know there are a few "startup manager" apps that allow to modify startup behaviour, but most of them require root access and moreover they also require auto start at boot permission to work.

I'd just like a way to figure out which of my apps have that permission so I can decide which is worth keeping and which to uninstall.
