HTC Incredible :: Applied Leaked RUU And Lost Root
Aug 27, 2010
I updated my DINC this morning using the leaked RUU and it worked perfectly, booted up and went to install Titanium Backup and noticed that I was no longer rooted. Do I just re-do unrevoked or some other root method to get root back?

I saw the forum thread here: Cant root, is it the latest ota software update? I can't seem to use any apps that require root access after android update earlier this week. I have an HTC Incredible, 2.2, rooted with un revoked. I can't seem to re-root it either. Not sure if this is to do with the update or not.

I was sitting at my desk and work and saw the "System Update" notification pop up on my phone. I grabbed my phone, stood up, and showed my coworker. Unfortunately, in doing so I accidentally pressed "Update Now." I had planned to post-pone the update until I got home so I could Unrevoked Forever and S-Off. It's currently in the middle of installing (little ! icon w/ the Android guy next to it). I guess I'm going to lose my root. Any idea how long I'll have to wait to gain it back?

My new every 2 was up on 4/6/2010, and I was just going to preorder the incredible, but when I got to the checkout i noticed my total was $199, and my NE2 was not being applied. I have heard from many people here that it should be $99 total - $100 online discount + $100 NE2. I got the online discount, but not the other. Was there anything special you had to do? Why would it not apply? I'm going to call Verizon tomorrow, but I wanted to see what you guys had to say and have some good, solid info before I called them.

I have what's going to seem like such a silly question but I swear I looked and couldn't find the answer!I have been rooted for a while but never played with ROM's or anything like that.I am strait stock except for a few root only apps and removing bloatware.Well, now I am getting spammed with the OTA message and I am sick of it. So I am going to apply the Virtuous ROM (I actually like stock) so it'll go away. Here's my question... since the ROM I am choosing looks just like stock sense, how will I know I actually applied the ROM correctly? Is there somewhere in the settings (About Phone maybe?) where it says Virtuous 3.1? I assume it'll be there in the software info, but I have no idea.

Looks pretty craptacular right now. I know I'm supposed to give it another 12-24 hours to dry and "cure" (although I seem to recall seeing the timeframe of 24-48 hours on this board, anyone vouch for that?), but I'm a little concerned.Sorry for the huge crappy pic, had to take it with my old phone. But you can see the smears and lines. Those are what I'm worried about. Anyone who's used a Zagg able to comment on whether those disappear in the curing process? I'll be sure to post better pics when it's completely dried for people.

I have, to me at least, a very stable 2.3.9 from when the original leak was pushed out. What a joy over 2.1!
I've been reading about deodexing, ROMs, Themes etc. Alot of this is for the OTA 2.2 which I find in my searches. All this requires root, which I am now prepared to do.
Is this the best way/most current way to root the 2.3.9?
How to root the Droid 2 - xda-developers
Or will this work on the leaked 2.2?
Easier 1-2-3 Droid 2 Root for Windows / Linux / Mac - xda-developers
I really don't want to go the route of downgrading to 2.1, then back again, nor do I want the OTA 2.2.

Here is the scenario:
Motorola Droid - Original
1. Rooted 2.1, then
2. OTA Stock Update to 2.2, then
3. Seem to have lost root, However - I still have the Superuser Permissions Icon.
I use Barnacle for WiFi Tether - I get a "Permission Denied" error when I try to start the application. I also went into the terminal emulator and tried an "su" which also gave a permission denied response. I tried "sudo" and also got permission denied response. Others have told me this is common with this progression of events. However, How do I now ROOT 2.2 in this scenario?

I had my phone rooted and I accidentally hit volume down and power instead of volume up and power (I was going to flash a new ROM). I was asked to press action and update like I did the first time I rooted but after it was finished I tried to go and flash a ROM it just brought me to a screen with an android robot and a triangle with an exclamation point. What I need to know is do I need to re-root and if not what do I need to do?

I followed Surge's method of updating to 4.4.2 with root on my Verizon Galaxy S4. That was successful, and I soon after decided that I wanted to give HyperDrive RLS 16 a try on the 4.4.2 base. I installed HyperDrive, but when when I boot up the phone, I lost all root access, safestrap, and my WiFi will not turn on. I know how to fix the WiFi issue and its an easy fix with root, but the problem is that I totally lost root. When I open up SuperSu it says that the binaries are not installed, and I cannot install safestrap to even flash the Verizon modules to get wifi working.

Can anyone on a leaked install verify if WMA files are not working in the stock music player? I could have sworn they were working before I did the install, but now they're not working. Weird thing too is that winamp is also not seeing them, but the files are definitely there when I view the folders in Explorer. I don't know if anyone can shed some light on that too. Last I knew, the Inc supported WMA's, correct?

Please note that this can and will void your warranty and while no ill effects have been suffered, I nor this forum can be held responsible with what you decide to do with your phone. Use at your own risk! Warning! Under no circumstance should you reapply this patch over itself. I have seen two phones die over this. Dead as in, no power, no charge, do not pass go, do not collect 200 dollars. Go directly to jail! I also recommend that you Do Not accept any official OTA while running this leak. It could lead to the same end result. Instead, its best you root, downgrade the HBOOT, and reflash with an RUU. First of all, make sure you are not rooted. So this means you will need to use an RUU (ROM Update utility) to revert your phone back to stock. You can get it from here:
http://tinyurl.com/22rotth
Run through the RUU. If you run into trouble with usb connection errors, or other troubles, you can try these suggestions. Having troubles with the RUU giving connection errors? Do this.
Go to start, and in the search/run box, type
%temp%
Delete all that you can. Make sure the RUU is not running in the background. Now run the RUU again. Once it starts to the first screen, it has extracted the files to the temp directory. You can then copy them to a safe place. It will be a long winded numbered folder, with a similar subfolder. Once you have copied it to a safe place, you can then copy adb.exe, fastboot.exe, and adbwinapi.dll from the latest SDK into it, overwriting the older copies. Then start the RUU by executing ARUWizard.exe. This fixed the problem for me.
Otherwise, you can also use the extracted files to create an image that HBOOT can load. Search for rom.zip in those files and rename it to PB31IMG.zip and put it on your sdcard. Turn off your phone and then hold DOWN volume and power to get into the HBOOT screen. Let it scan through the files and when it asks to run update, say yes and let it do its thing. It will reboot at least once during update. Once you are back to stock, you can now provide the leaked update. MD5 hash is 68518f450fd4b15c696441f5f93deff4. Link can be found here:
dinc_ota.zip
or
http://www.4shared.com/file/ON3qK3n0/dinc_ota.html
Copy this zip file to your sdcard, renaming it to update.zip. Now power down your phone. Hold DOWN volume and power to get to HBOOT. It will do its scanning thing. If you still have the RUU on there, say NO to updating and NO to rebooting. Once you get to the menu with fastboot, recovery, etc. choose Recovery. This will boot you to the stock recovery with an image with an! Hold UP volume and hit power. This will take you into the recovery menu. Choose apply update.zip, navigating with volume keys and hit the power button. Let it do its thing. It will then say reboot to finish. Navigate to reboot and hit the power button. Let it finish. It will reboot several times during the update.
That's the easy part of installing it. You can also root it with unrevoked tools (3.1 is the latest). Having Market Issues?

It is recommended you do NOT install any third party kernels until new source has been released.
Going back is NOT as easy and I will list this in another thread located here:

When the official OTA update hits it will possibly include froyo but there is also a chance (maybe 50/50) that it will lock us out of root. If it doesn't this post is a moot point. Now you can't get a rom with the leaked update because of the change in radio performed to the phone, but you could always get a rom with just stock froyo (w/sense) ripped from it.
Meaning: If the update closes the "hole" to root, you will have to revert to stock, install the leaked ota update, than install the stock froyo rom after someone rips it for us. So just a heads up for those that have the leaked update, just sit tight and see what the future holds before you uninstall something you may need.

I am wanting to know, in preparation for the 2.2 release to the Incredible, just what steps I will need to take to be able to get the OTA just like normal. I don't use root for much of anything. I am not overclocked, ShootMe is probably the only app I actually use regularly and the leaked 2.2 is way too buggy for me to keep on the phone. I currently have the updated radio via the leaked 2.1 OTA and my phone is rooted. I assume that I can't just apply the 2.2 OTA, but I am wonder how far I will need to revert. I'd like to lose as little data as possible from my phone, am I just SoL?

I was rooted fine with unrevoked forever. I wanted to try a ROM than required me to install the newest version of hboot so I did that. Well I didn't like that ROM so I tried to flash a nandroid restore but it didn't take. So I reinstalled the pc36img that I used when I rooted my phone. Then I rebooted my phone. Now it booted like its not rooted! I don't have superuser app and when I try to reboot into recovery I get a red triangle over a phone.
When I boot into hboot it says I have s-off but I have no idea how to get my phone back to the way it was. Under system info it says I have firmware version 2.1-update1 but I try to look for a froyo update and it says there are none available. I was going to just unroot with the s-on tool but that requires going into recovery which I can't do. What do I do toget my root back!

What is the best way to tell if you lost your root access? I updated my from darch 2.7 to 2.8, and just wanna make sure all is still good. I did it from the Darch updater via my phone. The adjust brightness program that that requires root access works but wireless tether doesn't seem to work. Does my have to be a certain level for the tether to work? It was at 14 percent or some thing like that.

Go into recovery (like you did to apply the update.zip). Wipe your cache. Perform a factory reset/date wipe or whatever it's called from within recovery. You _should_ (again I take no responsibility here) boot into 2.1 where you can root and then apply 2.2 update again. Good luck, and let us know if it does/doesn't work.
To revert to 2.1:
1: Flash sbf. After this, you will bootloop.
2: Get into recovery like you did when you updated to 2.2.
3: Wipe cache.
4. Factory reset.
When you reboot you should be at stock 2.1. This would be useful if you needed to return the phone for warranty services, or if you need to reinstall 2.2 for some reason (like to gain root).

My question is when you root the Eris is anything lost such as data on the phone that will have to be re-installed? Or is does it wipe the phone? I would prefer not to have to re-install but I will if it is necessary. Also will I be able to receive any further OTA updates? I know that the one scheduled for tomorrow is most likely the last that this phone will see but just in case I want all of my bases covered. I would also like to take advantage of possibly putting 2.2 on it if there is not an official release so I can take advantage of the awesome features that 2.2 offers. I really don't care about loosing SenseUi because I use Launcher Pro and love it and prefer not to switch back to SenseUi. One more thing. I really want to take out certain apps that came with the phone that are only a nuisance to me such as amazonmp3, Stocks, Tweet & google talk. And of course take advantage of the apps that are available only to rooted phones.
