HTC Hero :: Unlocked Phone / Data Not Working
Sep 12, 2009
Recently bought the HTC Hero Unlocked White Teflon version. Had an i Phone 3G with the unlimited Data/ Text plan. I called and asked them to enable the MMS feature early since it is blocked for i Phone users. So they dropped me down to a regular data plan which did not work. Then upgraded me to a smart phone data plan. And I called again to reactivate to an i Phone plan. Called numerous times. Reinstalled the Sim on the i Phone data is active. I have done all the usually remove Sim card/ factory reset. About as much as I can do on a mac OS wise. They still cannot seem to get my data to work.

Sorry if this is explained somewhere else but I couldn't find it.
The instantroot.apk keeps failing on my Hero yet the only people who are supposed to have problems with this are T-Mobile users, correct?
I've got plently of space on my SD card (over a gig), my build number is 2.73.771.73, and I've got an unlocked orange(soon to be o2) sim in it.
I really want to see what I can get from rooting my phone.

I'm planning to buy the HERO from new-egg recently, but I am still confuse about some problems. Can unlocked HERO from new egg work on the T-MOBILE Sim card? I'm using t-mobile pre-paid card now, do I need to do something else to activate the Sim card? I don't care about 3G network. Could you give me some advices about buying HERO from new-egg?

I had to change the housing for my HTC Hero GSM Unlocked, and though I believe I didn't break/crack or damage anything, especially the speakers, after reassembly my speakers are not working any more, no more audible ring tone, sound notifications. Everything else is working fine, and with earphones, I can hear everything. I even re dissembled it and couldn't find anything that was broken, or loose, or damaged. Can anyone anyone point me in the right direction please! OR anyone know where I can get a new HTC Hero GSM version internal speaker? I tried on eBay and couldn't find anything. are there HTC repair centers around NYC?

I'm getting close to deciding to buy a SIM-free Hero to use PAYG on the 3 network. When I receive my SIM-free phone what exactly do I do to get it connected? I can see plenty of websites offering APN details and the Hero manual points me to where I need to go to create APN settings on the phone, but I realise that I may flounder when I need to decide exactly what I need to do and in what order. Does anyone know of an idiot's guide setting out the steps I need to take, please?

I'm in the UK and have an unlocked HTC Hero with a o2 SIM. When the 2.1 Android update is released, will I receive a pop-up message on my phone like people whose phones are under contract from Orange, etc? Secondly, the main reason I'd like this update is Google Navigation. I read somewhere this wont be available in the UK.

I'm not sure if anyone is able to answer this confidently, maybe those that have older unlocked Android phones can give some insight. I'm looking at buying an unlocked Hero from mobile phones direct.co.uk, whenever they start selling them. I'm only hesitant about what if any support I'd lose from not buying directly from a carrier. How do Android OTA updates work on unlocked phones? Also, can anyone speculate yet how HTC is going to be handling its updates? Will it push through the carriers? If I buy unlocked and get a contract through Voda phone (who is not officially carrying the phone) will I be the last one on the block to get my updates? Or will I need to root my phone and install them all myself?

I appear to have gotten myself into a bit of a pickle. I recently bought a 3 Mobile HTC Hero and unlocked it successfully. After putting in my Vodafone sim card and starting up the phone, it doesn't seem to be letting me access Vodafone internet. I'm guessing this is because I have the 3 version of the ROM. Is there any way I can download the brand free rom or even just fix this internet problem? This is my first smart phone and I really didn't think this would be a problem. I assumed with android boasting it's open-source-ness that branding wouldn't be an issue.

I just bought a Telus HTC Hero, which the seller had unlocked. I intend to use this phone with another carrier, Bell. After spending a few hours at Bell customer service, they finally managed to get the 3G data working (for weather, email etc.). However, the browser does not work, neither does the Market.
What seems to be causing the problem is that this phone is MASSIVELY tweaked (appears massive to me probably because I'm not that big on tweaking and don't know about the Android OS in general) by the previous owner who only had it for a few days. The Bell customer service person told me that they switched over a couple of other HTC devices from Telus that were NOT tweaked and the data works perfectly.
All I want is for the phone to be in original factory settings, with original ROMs, firmwares, software, etc. etc. Just looking at the whole bunch of different files that this guy had on the 2GB "gold" memory card made my head spin. He attempted to explain to me with all the "updates" and fancy "roms" and "roots" and crap that I didn't understand nor do I want to spend the time to learn.
I understand that a lot of people buy android phones because they love tweaking but I am not really into all that... I just wanted the phone for the form factor and the functionality and I don't want to worry about optimizing and whatnot. So my question is: is there any way to get the phone back to the most original possible software condition? I just want it "clean." Can I go ahead and wipe everything that is on the 2 GB card? What do I do? I performed a hard reset and it took me to some weird startup screen and I chose the first option which is like reboot now (there were also a bunch of other options including apply update.zip or something)... it still gave me the same MoDaCo build.
I can provide any information but I would really appreciate any help in restoring my seemingly very tweaked phone to original, factory settings, so it could be like any other phone being sold by Telus other than the fact that it is unlocked.

I recently bought a Telstra HTC Wildfire and unlocked it by code to use my 3 SIM card on it. However, after unlocking my mobile, when I choose the option "use phone for data connection when wi-fi is unavailable" it doesn't work. When i go to mobile network and network operators, I select to search for networks and the phone is automatically connected to "3Telstra(3G)". They also show 3(3G) and 3 networks, but when I try to select any of them, it says that the SIM card does not allow the connection to this network. I don't know if one thing is connected to the other, but I always used my old phone for data connection with the same SIM card.

I once had a samsung jet which was great but it was on orange and i wanted it on 3 because i recieved a better signal and wanted their push email. But when i put my three sim into my now unlocked Jet i found that i lacked 3's certificates and couldn't tether or get 3's push email.Anyway this made me decide to upgrade to a 3 hero to gain their functions however it seems their are no "certificate" needed and the hero seems to have its own push email service and can tether easily.SO my question is if i debrand my hero and thus can ugrade to 2.1 android will i still recieve free push email and be able to tether? as i guess if i change my rom it might be hard to go back.

I am running a Telus Hero on AT&T's network. I know other people are also doing this as well. I was thinking about the 2.1 update due out and was wondering what us unlocked Telus Hero owners should do to get it when it is released. I emailed HTC, and they said this. Quote:

I was sitting in a van/car when my phone fell out of my pants and onto the pavement. It was about a 3 feet fall. At first my phone seemed to be ok. There wasn't any scratches or cracks because it landed flat the screen facing up. But maybe about an hour later a small part of the screen was beginning to become dark. This dark area continued to get bigger after a couple of hours and by the end of the day the screen was completely "blacked out".
And silly me was too ocuppied playing with a guitar I had just bought instead of thinking about backing up or copying my important data from my phone, like pictures and notes etc. So later when I plugged my phone into my computer, I found out that I couldn't access the phones files like I would do on Hardisk taken from i.e. a laptop. When I go to Computer on Windows and look for my phone which is appearing as GT-I9100 as a camera and when I click on it says folder is empty. So I realized that I might not be able to get my data from my phone in case I get a new phone from the dealer.
I'm not very familiar with Android devices but I'm wondering if it's because I have a screen lock password that I can't get to the data on my phone?
PS - I'm thinking this is one those classic examples of, "You should have backed up everything on your phone everyday" scenario. Luckly I have most the pictures on my phone transferred to my computer already.

I had a HTC Hero which I sold to a friend. Before sending him the phone I Goolged how to log my Google account out of the Hero so that my friend could log in under his account. The answer I found on a multitude of website was to perform a hard reset of the phone, back to factory setting. As such, I performed the Factory Reset but the phone was originally Unlocked. Now my friend is saying he cannot make calls with ihs Tesco mobile sim.
Would the reset cancel the unlocking and revert the phone back to locked to a network?

I'm the proud owner of an unlocked orange uk hero running on t mobile Austria network. I have heard that the newer heroes cant be unlocked because orange have made a deal with htc and changed the codes. I must have been lucky because mine unlocked no problem with the code received from the impel number. My question is if i update the Rom with the orange Rom version on the htc homepage will my phone become Sim locked again, and more worrying will i not be able to unlock it again when it has the new Rom on it?

We have a Hero that was originally an Orange running on O2, this has now been unlocked using an unlock code but it is still running the .66 firmware (the lastest firmware that Orange have)All the updates appear to be OTA that I have found, but O2 obviously do not support the Hero.Do I need to boot the phone to a true HTC rom or can I go straight to 2.1 via the PC?If anybody can give me some basic steps to get to 2.1.

My HTC hero has just arrived today and I'd like to update it straight away before using it, is there anything I need to do before doing this other than syncing the phone to my laptop? What is the best update to use for unlocked, vodafone SIM HTC heroes? Also as mentioned earlier I have a vodafone SIM and my last phone was a nokia navigator, I've copied all my contacts to my SIM, should this be enough for me to get my contacts up and running when I use my hero?
