HTC Eris :: Reliable Root For Leakers?
Jul 13, 2010
There's a new thread over at XDA with a method that supposedly anyone, including those with leaked updates, can root their Eris. It involves a lot of command line typing and the initial followers were running into a lot of mistakes but it now appears that the instructions are updated and I saw one person who's gotten root.
Positive is, no stupid inserting/removing the SD card with some voodoo-magic timing req'd.

I don't want to beat a dead horse, but I have searched around and i have not found a good explanation as to why those with the 2.1v3 leak cannot manually install the official OTA file that was posted here.
Anyone have an explanation for this? I read that it has something to do with a different HBOOT, but I'm not really understanding it. Do you think we will every be able to get the OTA so that we can go root? I quickly jumped to the 2.1v3 leak without fully understanding the benefits of root and now, after more research, I really want to go root.

Yeah, this "ZC" guy at VZWSupport's Twitter page again changed his tune (as of 830am EDT 5/24/2010), and now says leakers WILL receive the official update..............

I'm just concerned about the possibility of bricking my Droid III. Even if the instructions are clear enough, there's a chance of running into something unclear in the midst of the process.
I've read about the One-click root, but I don't know if that's as easy as it gets (as of today) and whether it's an undoable hack.

1. reliability - I see lots of complaints about the Eris but it seems that this is a good phone.. so many good reviews! is this a reliable sound device? ( I am an IT guy so i can handle some problems / glitches )
2. reception - heres the thing.. i live in southern Maine, we currently have two Motorola phones on the USCC network. Somehow despite having good coverage in our area our home is a dead spot for USCC and ATT. My parents have Verizon phones which have a moderate signal ( 2+ bars ).Will the Driod Eris have a descent signal if my parents phone does okay... i am aware i can turn off the mobile network to allow for 1x signal.. ( if i am correct )

Hey everybody, I've looked for an answer on here, but to no avail. I tried to root my replacement Eris with 1.5, and HBOOT 1.47. Everything was going well until it got to the point of making a recovery, which for some reason, my phone wouldn't let me do. Infuriated and frustrated, I followed the steps to go back to 1.5 to a tee. However, I miss Vlingo so much, and i went to install the OTA 2.1, and it aborted the installation. I now have HBOOT 1.49.2000, so does my phone basically think I have the 2.1v3 leak, or am I just flat-out screwed? Done multiple factory resets, etc. and they haven't helped either

In our alltel contract, all my family lines get unlimited data for $40 a month. My parents are looking to upgrade their regular phones (for free) and I was going to recommend the eris (from amazon) to them. I have heard some talk of not having very good signal and mention of some bugs and want to know how much truth there is behind these (especially signal) or if they were lemons, etc. if it matters all my parents would do is call/text (obviously), email sync, and maybe browse the web every once in a while. Bugs with, say face book, wouldn't matter.

yesterday i read this on the rollback thread. "Anywho, with the Desire root method being released tomorrow, (It'll probably work on the Incredible too! ) that gives us a closer chance to rooting the Eris leaked 2.1." just wondering if any of the devs have looked into it and if so what progress has been made?

I want to run a 2.1 ROM (because I use Google Navigation). However reliability is my number 1 criteria.
I tried Sense2.1 (v2) and had a pretty miserable experience, I am now using Villian 5.3 and reasonably happy. IS this this the best bet for RELIABLE operation on HTC Hero?

A reliable GPS is extremely important to me when choosing a smartphone. I want to install android based navigation software, rather than have separate units for driving and hiking. The garminfone seems overpriced given its hardware and ancient android 1.6.
Samsung's Galaxy S impressed me with its 9mm thickness, large Super AMOLED and blazing fast hummingbird processor. After learning the GPS was unreliable, I decided to further explore my #2 choice, the HTC Desire.
Please comment on how your GPS navigation has performed, specifically using igo, copilot or similar navigation software. Do you feel it is as accurate as a dedicated GPS unit?

I check my phone this morning, no messages. I get to work and I have three messages on my GV extension from last night.
I have it set to sync and have a good signal at home. I get e-mail just fine, but GV won't pull down the messages.

Just ordered my Motorola Droid (yay!) - should be in my hands tomorrow.
I am absolutely going to use my Google Voice for texting (hey, its free). I'm considering using it as my primary number too.
My question: How reliable is Google Voice w/ texting and calls? Any reason NOT to go ahead this route?
I was always going to use it for text (I understand they are instant now), but for ease of communicating w/ my friends and family I'm also considering giving out my number for calls as well.

I'm not liking the alarm clock built into the Dinc. I hate all the alarm sounds and there does not appear to be a way to add different ones or even an MP3. What I'm really looking for is an alarm that will start off softly and build up say over 30 seconds. All the stock alarms just BLAST and freaks me and my wife out each morning. A snooze button is a must as I like to hit it a few times before I need to get up. I also need one that is very reliable as I use it as my main alarm for both home and on travel.

I know that the GPS altitude data isn't particularly reliable, so I looked for alternatives. This looks like a good solution I found here: But the value returned is not what I expected: -1.79769313486231E+308 I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do with this figure...

Need some advice, google maps and navigation never quite takes me to the right place, close too it but never quite there. Now near location is okay for something free, but its usually that last wee bit that you need more than anything, instead of you coming to an estate and it tells you its on the left hand side, which is the whole estate. I read in a thread here someplace about another free sat-nav that Im sure was for another phone type, but then someone in one of the other phone forums gave everyone a link into that forum to show how it works. Anyone know what I am talking about ? (most folks never do and they know me lol) or anyone know how to make the google navigation more reliable?

I know how to get the calculated GPS position via getLastKnownLocation (). As tests show, this function really always returns the last known location, so it doesn't matter if there is a gps fix available.
How can i check if the returned location is reliable? I tried it with getAccurracy(), but this function even returns a accurracy although no gps fix is availavle (anymore). Is there a possibility to get gps dop values? Used SDK is 1.6.

I am working on an app that fetches localized data from the Web based on the user's long/lat. Currently I am querying the system for the best enabled provider [my criteria defines best basically as most precise--not sure if this is the best idea for my application, as at the point where I fetch data it really doesn't matter if the user is here or 3 miles from here.].. But anyhow, I'm curious as to what is most reliably the fastest Location provider? Network or GPS? My app hangs a bit "Acquiring your location" on my loading screen and I'd like to cut this wait time down as much as possible.

I have a game in development that makes http calls to my server. The server handles some database interaction and returns some XML for the game to parse. The issue is that the connection seems very unreliable. I believe my server is in part to blame for this because it can be somewhat unresponsive at times, but the frequency is MUCH greater when communicating with the phone than with a browser on a computer. I also notice that it gets worse when 3G is not available for the phone and it is on the edge network. Is there any way to code my app to make it more robust? Do I need to retry calls X times on failures?
Here is the code I am using now:

Is to enable Bluetooth Discoverable mode! In about 80% of all cases it will first hang and then - about 5 seconds later - it reboots.
Only directly after such a reboot one can set the phone discoverable without fear of another crash. Terrific!
Is there any place where could one report that bug, where Google and/or HTC would be listening?

I'm trying to run a background task which runs every minute or so for an android application but I am struggling to ensure that the task actually runs every minute. I've tried a variety of approaches from using SystemClock.sleep() to the AlarmManager (both repeating alarm and a fixed alarm) but it seems that unless the device is charging any kind of repeating system has a variable repeat rate once the device is unplugged. Is there any way to run a stable consistently repeating service?
