HTC EVO 4G :: Evo Living Up To The Hype Or Should Avoid It
Jul 6, 2010
Does it have all the lag people have complained about? I've played with one in a store and didn't notice any lag. It's not quite as smooth as iOS, but that doesn't mean much. However, you guys have had it for about a month now. Does it slow down the more apps you use? (Note: I'm not app crazy. I'm much more interested in a phone's core functionality than apps).
What is all this talk between you guys of "Did you get 003?" and the like?
Is the screen separation issue really an issue or a tempest in a teapot? I'm a tech blog reader so I know that these things are generally a big deal to a few and most devices have no issues.
How fast is the camera when taking shots? Instantly ready to go one after the other or a bit of a delay?
Is the battery really as bad as they say? I understand that 4G eats a lot, and if you have a billion things going at once that'll hurt, but on the flip side I don't want to have to have everything off to the point that I'm using a flat screen RAZR.

Is it just me or is this thing not living up to all the hype? I know there are tons of tmo fanyboys that will swear this is the greatest phone ever, and i wanted to be one of them, but sadly i cannot. I have dealt with major lag on this phone the past 3 days wether it be opening apps or just trying to make a call. The lightness of the phone doesnt really bother me though i do prefer the feel of the nexus a lot more. I dont know, i guess i was just expecting so much from this phone and to be honest im starting to feel like i will return it and stick with my N1 till this holiday season. Another thing is 3g reception, wow. Yesterday i was outside at union park in chicago, i was dropping down to G, no not edge, G constantly. Coudnt send sms, mms, nothing. Was very aggrevating. I really really want to love this phone, im just having a hard time. I guess i was spoiled with the N1 for so long.

I have a singleton in an activity. When I end my application (like pressing back button), and start it again after some time, the singleton is not recreated, but is holding previous state. Singleton is not destroyed if the application is destroyed? Do I have to null its static members in onDestroy() to avoid memory leak.

All the articles im seeing now are all about the Droid X dethroning the iPhone 4 as the best smart phone? But am I the only one that its pretty much the same thing just bigger? They are raving about the Droid X's 4.3" screen, 8 megapixel camera, and 1 GHz processor. The EVO did this last month and it didnt receive as much attention. All I see is Droid X vs iPhone 4 reviews. Is it since Verizon is the more favorable service provider of the three?

I know who created the original, he's a big name, and I know who ported it to droid, but what makes it immensely different from say BB? I don't care too much about themes, I use a stock theme, so as far as performance, or features other than live wall paper color options, what am I missing?

when i first got my eris (in Jan.) i installed this because everyone on here was saying how amazing it is! So i installed it. It didn't work properly and kept force closing. So i installed chomp. Chomp is amazing and i freakin love it. I still see people talking about hancent so i decided to give it another try last night. My g/f sent me a picture message 3 times and i didnt get a single one of those messages with handcent. it would randomly erase texts as soon as i replied to them. I quickly uninstalled it and ran back to chomp.

I have been using Opera Mini 5 for quite a while now. It seems to load pages several times faster than some of the more popular browsers, such as Dolphin. Why doesn't Opera Mini 5 get some love? Could it just have something to do with the cache? Maybe the more and more I go into the website, the faster it should load?

I used a Nokia 770 for over a year, and the difference between a 3.5"-3.7" screen and the tablet's 4.1" screen is pretty glorious. Now that such a screen size is making it's way to the modern fold (first with the HTC Evo 4G, and now the hotly anticipated Motorola Droid X), I can't help but feel the humble increase isn't enough to feign serious interest over your run-of-the-mill screen size. Certainly, it's bigger, but is it enough? When the Dell Streak first showed up, I instantly knew I wanted it. 5" is the perfect gap between large screen pocket device, and 9"-10" non-pocket device.
Yet, it seems the Streak's coverage is little, even though it's already out in the United Kingdom, and showing up here stateside in under a month. Why is it? Am I beyond the fray, and am alone in thinking that 5" is perfect rather than overkill? Or are people afraid Dell might jump the shark (since this is their first phone, and is putting a lot forward)? Or am I not seeing the bigger picture here, at all?
Why are the 4" phones getting all the drolling mouths and oh-la-la's, while a 5" phone is coming in no time at all to shut down the competition?
For comparison, a little evidence before I sound like a look spouting off:
Here, even on this forum it seems evident:
Dell Mini 5 (32/265)
Motorola Droid X (126/2,940)
HTC EVO 4G (5,132/92,865)
The Droid X forum has more than ten times the post activity, even though the Dell Streak has been a tangible product for twice as long. The EVO 4G forum has well more than that, but excuses to it, since it's been available to the public for longer than the Streak has.
Google Trends: http://www.google.com/trends?q=Dell+Streak,+Motorola+Droid+X,+HTC+Evo+4G
Streak's popularity on the internet has nosedived down after it's hands-on at D8, and quickly Droid X's searches are taking it's place. Meanwhile the non-Dell phones increase in both news and search activity.

So i am somewhat sick of bump charging. I know that it is EXTREMELY beneficial, as i get a good 20% boost in my battery life. But the downside is that sometime i do not have time to bump charge, other times i forget to turn on my phone for an hour or two... It is a hassle that i would like to avoid. Is there any software patch of some sort that would just fix the charging issue so that the first 7% do not drop so rapidly? I feel like there should be something out there, if not, then it seems like a possibility. So someone please let me know if there is anything out there that would fix the problem.

In a start activity of our android application we're using a linearlayout with an background image for whole space. The image size is 320x480 - the same as device resolution, we're using for testing. The problem is, the image will be scaled und looks not so nice. I tried to use imageview instead, but I've got black borders.
Some ideas, how to avoid scaling or how to get the proper size for background image?!

While serving time with AT&T, my voicemail could be configured to NOT require a PIN when it was being accessed by my dumb phone.
Does anyone know if there is an equivalent feature when accessing Verizon voicemail from my Incredible? My google-fu is weak, for I could not find such a feature.

I'm trying to get the android SDK set up on my computer, but every time I start the SDK and AVD manager and try to connect to the repositroy, I get this error:
Failed to fetch URL https://dl-ssl.google.com/android/repository/repository.xml, reason: Connection timed out: connect
I have no HTTP proxy, and I have also tried checking the box "Force https://... sources to be fetched using http://...", but that doesn't work either.
When I go to https://dl-ssl.google.com/android/repository/repository.xml via firefox, I can see the xml file, however it takes a minute or two to load, making me wonder if the sdk's timeout is too short for it to actually connect to the server??
I am on windows 7 Professional, 4GB ram, AMD Turion x2 ultra processor, Java details:
java version "1.6.0_17" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_17-b04) Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 14.3-b01, mixed mode, sharing)
And I downloaded the android-sdk_r04-windows sdk...
I've searched the web, and the only simmilar problem I can find is this link: http://www.mail-archive.com/android-beginners@googlegroups.com/msg168..

I have total 3 activities.
First activity(A) starts second activity(B). From Activity B, 3rd activity(C) is called.
Activity B, shows list with checkbox to select items and single OK button. On clicking OK button Activity C is called with selection.
When user clicks BACK button in Activity C, by default Activity B is displayed (with selected checkbox).
I want to display Activity A when BACK button is clicked in Activity C.
How to achieve that?
I have handled OnKeyDown() in Activity C to startactivity(A). it is working. But when user clicks BACK button on Activity A, again Activity C is displayed. while application should end.
In this direction how to skip Activity B is ever called?

I am building an Android Application that has a lot of C modules that has the sequence of Java->JNI->C code. I am currently building all the C modules using mm -B option in the Android baseport (Android source code) within the external folder. When I want to build all C modules, I call the individual modules' mm -B function one after the other. I have 2 questions in this regard.I wanted to know if there is a way to do incremental build on a set of modules. The scenario here is that I am building a set of modules one after another from a script. I have observed that all the modules mentioned in the script get built irrespective of whether a change has been made to it or not. This clean build takes time. Is there a way out of this?
Whenever mm -B is executed, the libraries built are placed in out/target/product//obj/lib/ path by default. I wanted to know if we can change this path and whenever the mm -B command is called, the libraries are copied to the corresponding modules paths and not to this common path.
I dont have much knowledge of the envsetup.sh that has the definition of these mm and mmm functions.

Does anyone know/have experience with avoiding int'l roaming charges? I called verizon and the rep said that I would roam anytime my phone is on, and that I would incur charges, which is NOT what I want. I don't need 3G or any other type of phone or data connection associated with the network. All I want to be able to do is use Fring/skype/googlevoice through a WiFi connection. I've been reading and am getting confused with all this 'APN' on/off stuff. Can't I just put the phone in airport mode and connect to WiFi through my DINC?

I use my phone as an audio player while outside with a bluetooth headset. I have the phone in my pocket. However,it seems very easy for the side buttons to be pressed, even when the phone is locked. What do you all do for this? I have tried a couple things and did find a "solution", but it's not one that I like, and would appreciate hearing thoughts from others.
