HTC Droid Eris :: How Much Memory Needed To Run Smoothly
Jan 23, 2010
I have been noticing that my droid has been slowing down lately.I checked my advanced app killer at it says that I have 40M available when I have only a few apps running. It used to be around 80M.I have cleared cache from the browser and other apps. How much memory is needed to run these phones smoothly? How much total memory is on the phone?I have really enjoyed this site.I think I would be lost without it.

Just curious what you guys normally have freed up on your phones, since this is normally a way of speeding things up a bit. I've been reading today about how Task Killers are somewhat counter-intuitive and do not help with battery life. So I deleted and I'm now thinking about not having enough free memory... Figures.
Anyways, I'm 25mb right now, and I've hovered between there and about 125mb today. I'm curious what you guys are normally seeing. If I'm not using a task killer, is there something else you might recommend to keep things running smoothly?

It can't seem to play a video smoothly without pausing. Slows my phone tremendously when videos are playing. Is there a specific format required or something?

I rooted and now have Amon's recovery on my phone. I downloaded SetCpu and ran it but it will only let me overclock to 528 max. What steps do I need to do so I can overclock in the 700's like everyone else.

I have an HTC Eris, not rooted with the OTA 2.1. I used to use ATC to try to manage battery and speed but recently started reading about how worthless they are with the 2.1. So, I downloaded System Panel Lite, just to monitor things and have the ability to kill something if I needed to. Now, since I haven't been using ATC I've been noticing that my available memory stays very low. Right now it's sitting at about 29/30M. And of course, if I kill all the background stuff it'll jump to about 75 or 80M, but then it'll kill my auto updates and synchs. Kind of a no win situation if you ask me.
Also, since I've stopped using ATC I've noticed the battery isn't as good as it was. It's still not too bad, but could be better. I unplugged it from the charger yesterday morning and am at 45% remaining. Is this about what everyone else gets?
So, basically, if anyone has any suggestions or words of wisdom, I would appreciate it. I was going to do the factory reset but now I understand it could kill 3G so.... I won't be doing that anytime soon. Also, before you suggest it, I already know about the basic battery saver techniques such as display and background data settings.

My Eris is always hovering around 25-30 megs of RAM available. Is that enough to properly run the phone? Or do I have a problem?

What is eating up memory? When I received the refurb it said 131Mb free space. I have installed a few apps (google voice, notepad, swype) it shrank by 1 Mb (only) After the nightly profilactic battery pull for 1 minute I rebooted the phone and now I have 120 Mb. Where did the 10Mb go?

When I reboot my eris, ATK shows me running at around 98-107 RAM memory, but after a while it seems to go lower. It falls like 10mb per day. It's day three since reboot and I'm at 71 with no apps running. My regular use is mainly web browning, txts, and calls. Do we have to reboot these devices all the time or am I missing something.

I received a 'low memory' message last night and my first action was to dump some unneeded apps which seemed to relieve the problem, but I figure that it is just a matter of time until it comes back. I am not using the SD card for anything right now and was wondering if that could be a path to avoiding this in the future. If so, what can I move there and how do I do it? Can I run apps from the SD card? I have a couple of large 3rd party apps including Grocery iQ (9.25MB), Touchdown (7.98MB), Documents to Go (7.59MB) and Trapster (4.61MB) along with a bunch that are in the 3-4MB range.

Getting memory low warning on my Eris. Available space on internal storage is only 28MB. Available space on SD card is 7,506 MB out of total space of 7,572 MB. So, I guess the only thing on the SD card is the pics I took. What can I move to the SD card, and how do I go about doing that? I would think just moving all the Market Apps to the SD side would solve my problems. Any help out there?

In the 2.1 Eris:
In Settings -> Applications -> Running Services
There is a white bar at the bottom. Mine says:
Avail: 10MB + 0.00B in 5 Other:0.00B in 6
(Those numbers have been different, obviously at different times. The above numbers are after killing the still-running Music, Listen, and AK Notebook processes. No other "non-essential" proceses were running. )
But what do they mean?
How does that correlate to Settings -> SD card & phone storage which tells me Available space is 86 MB?

Just switched from a blackberry for the past 3 years to the eris. Loving the phone loving android its amazing compared to my storm1. Just a couple basic questions to ask real quick.
1. App memory. On my blackberry I got into the habit of constantly checking my app memory. I have about 12 apps installed and jump around 30-55 available memory. Should I be worried about my app memory and keep freeing it up?
2. How many apps do you all have installed I see tons of apps I want but I tend to uninstall them because of app memory.

When every I go into my ATK and kill the apps it will say like 60m which I'm assuming means memory, but on my friends incredible when he clears his apps he has 200m or over. How much memory is on the eris compared to the incredible?

Maybe this has been discussed, but i don't remember reading it. I've been clearing out my cache regularly to free up memory. But it never occurred to me to delete MMS messages. I just freed up 10 MB of internal memory by deleting MMS messages. I deleted entire threads, and in some cases, individual MMS messages (pictures and videos), because i didn't want to loose the whole thread.

So I just got my class 6 8gb memory card and I want to make the switch. What's the best way to go about this? Should I just copy all contents of the stock memory card into a folder and then copy and past all of that onto the new card and then make the switch? Or is there a better way? I don't want to screw anything up and I don't want to lose anything (pics, music, settings, etc.)

After fighting the silent bug for a while - I asked for a replacement that I received today. (The box said "Like-new Certified".) It came with 2.1, PCD: 06/28/2010, So I did not do Factory reset. I synced with google, I got all my contacts, with icons, e-mails and calendar back.
I reinstalled googe voice, AK notepad and swype beta.
Most important difference: The Available space (memory) is 131Mb now, whereas on the old phone it was 91 Mb. It seems I have one more bars, but I could be mistaken. (I wish I wrote down what I had before...) How do I check for the 50% bug? I will keep an eye of the silent bug shows up.

159mb seems like no space at all. Seems like stuff should install on the SD card. I know you can if you root, but you shouldn't have to. I clear the cache on apps regularly. How else can we avoid filling up our internal memory?

Is there an EASY start to finish tutorial out there?
Everything I found is for a specific ROM (I have XTRROM3) and looks really complicated.
My phone is showing the low memory icon and it's really annoying, so I'd like to get this figured out.

Ok after seeing the somewhat heated threads on here about whether or not to use a task killer to help mange memory and improve performance on the droid Eris I decided to run my own little unscientific test.
So just a bit of background, Ive been in enterprise wide IT for 10 years now. I will say that my O/S knowledge is not exactly current but that may not be a bad thing for this. I will also state that what I report is just my own experience and I have not repeated is several times to validate anything. YMMV!
About four weeks ago my Eris was running like poo. Slow, lag city and getting almost unusable. I had been using Advanced Task killer quite liberally during this time trying to keep the device usable. Short term it seemed to help restore some of the response issues but it didnt take long before I was trying reboots to get the phone working well. Here is a list of apps I had installed at the time.
Pandora
Weather Bug
Shop Savy
Google Sky
Daily Dilbert
Bloom County
WiFi Analyzer
Silent Mode Toggle
Taskiller
SpareParts
battery Widget
Robot Guitarist
keyring reward
tv.com
NPR News
Movies
Shazam
Zedge
ip-calc
aldiko
JogTracker
UnitConverter
Backgrounds
photoshop mobile
plink art
Weather channel
Radar now
Last.fm
Plus a few others that had been removed.
That quite a few apps but not overboard in my book, and most seem to be pretty stable.
Anyway I decided to wipe the device and start over again, but with the debate raging I decided that I was not going to run any sort of task killer or other memory manager. And that I was going to run for at least four weeks and report the results. I will say I trimmed some of the redundant apps (weather bug replaced all the other weather apps nicely)
I have to say that over all I dont feel like I need a memory manager or task killer. It would be hard to say that the phone is a zippy as it was right after I wiped it, but as of now its no where near as laggy as it was before I wiped it. I feel my battery life is just fine, but I am not one who thinks that battery is an issue anyway. If there is 10% left when my head hits the pillow at night then I am a happy camper.
So this does beg the question what does using a memory manager really do for your experience on the phone? I cant for sure state that using a task killer caused my lag issues before, but it was not helping at the time either. My apps and usage have not changed very much other then not using a task killer and as of now my phone is running pretty darn well.
For me I am pretty firmly in the do-not-need-a-task-killer-camp for now. And before you flame or argue with me I challenge you to try it both ways for a while (with a clean wipe). I am sure that others have had a different experiences and maybe using one works for them.

I upgraded from 1.5 to the "new" 2.1 leak.so far it's snappier, but I've noticed a couple anomolies. I'm hoping that someone here can enlighten me.If I do a fresh reboot then use Advanced Task Killer to kill all the apps that run on startup, I can usually get around 104 MB of free memory. But, for whatever reason, it always seems to trickle down to about 30 to 40 on any given day.I have to run ATK again just to get it back up to around 70 MB free.Is there a memory leak? Or is this caused by random apps running in the background eating memory? There are some, like MP3 Store, Market, and Voice Dialer that seem to run even after I kill them with ATK.Next question, and kind of an observation...I have a Kia Forte Koup with built in Bluetooth. The Eris syncs up just fine and I can voice dial. I've noticed that others have said that the Eris wouldn't let you voice-dial with Bluetooth, but mine does.It worked with 1.5, too. My question is whether there's a way to increase the volume further.when I had 1.5 I could easily hear calls over bluetooth, but 2.1 is much quieter. I've got the "Bluetooth In-Call Volume" maxed out, and my volume in my car is almost maxed, but it's still quieter than it used to be.Any ideas?

I have a ton of videos that were transferred from my old phone to my Eris, and they must have been saved to the phone's built in memory. I want to transfer them to the card so I can put them into my computer. Does anyone know how to do this? I have been unable to sync using the cord because of a driver issue. (I am too un-tech savvy to install a driver from the website-it was too complicated)

Unless you want to pay $29.95 for a dock to rest your phone in while it charges, you can get all of the features with out the dock. Just install the Dockrunner app in the market. Its free. It will give you the alarm clock, weather report and options to play music, and slide show. Once you activate that screen it will lock you out from everything else on the phone. So you go to your Notifications panel and select Dockrunner again to deactivate it and it will send you back to your home screen again.

UPS just dropped off my Droid. Just plugged it in & it's charging for the 1st time. I haven't gone thru the initial setup or anything yet, because I've read that it needs to charge for 3 hrs before you do anything with it? Is this true?I need to call in the serial # for activation, but haven't yet. Is it cool to go ahead w/ the initial setup even though it's not fully charged up yet? Or will the battery be adversely affected? I'm wondering if some of the people complaining about battery life didn't let it charge fully before starting to play with it, as is recommended in the User's Manual.
