HTC Droid Eris :: Data Roaming Charges?
Jan 18, 2010I need to know how much Verizon charges for data roaming.
View 1 RepliesI need to know how much Verizon charges for data roaming.
View 1 RepliesI'm heading up North with my new X and want to reduce the VZW data roaming charges in Canada as much as possible, but without losing or reducing my Exchange email service.
I will:
cut back on unnecessary browsing.
stop downloading videos!
turn off background data.
turn off HTML for emails.
use Wi-Fi when possible.
turn off GPS.
Is this the right approach? Any suggestions on other uses or apps to avoid?
New to this whole Andoid/International calling? Can someone please suggest a step-by-step app so I can make calls FROM China to the US without Verizon raoming charges? will it even work? or is all lines of communication off? What about SMS? what app should I use for that if voice is not an option?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have been a Sprint customer for a very long time. My wife and I both have smartphones and we have the Unlimited 1500 plan. To my knowledge, this includes everything (excluding International calls.....which I know for a fact thanks to an $1800 fraud that was on my bill 2 months ago). I digress, data roaming is included as a part of this plan as far as I know.
I checked my bill online yesterday, and there was an alert that I have used 3800+KB of data roaming.
Now....let me start by saying, yes, I do have the setting checked to allow for data roaming (as to my knowledge, it's included in my plan). I do have the Hero (my second one) and for the life of me, I can't figure out why it goes into roaming mode more than any other Sprint phone I've ever owned. My wife's phone could be sitting next to mine, and I'll be roaming while she is not. That being said, I can guarantee there have been instances where I've roamed and pulled down data (checking email, automatically checking weather/facebook/twitter/etc, internet) and I've never seen this alert on my account.
I called Sprint last night to question it, and they put a $20 service credit on my account. That's all fine and great, as I'm not going to turn down free money, but I had explained that my concern was that the alert is showing up to begin with. I even explained that while I appreciate the credit, I'd rather just have this situation resolved so that I don't have to call back next month if these charges appear.
My question is this, has anyone ever seen this before? I am rooted, I am running Fresh 2.1.1 and I have the latest SPRINT radio flashed from Flipz' website. I have had this setup for a little over 2 months now, so this isn't the first billing cycle that this setup has seen. I can't figure this out for the life of me.
If this continues to be a problem, it's either going to require a new device or a new carrier. I live in a very populated western suburb in Chicagoland and have NEVER had a problem with roaming or poor signal until I got the Hero in October.
Does anyone know/have experience with avoiding int'l roaming charges? I called verizon and the rep said that I would roam anytime my phone is on, and that I would incur charges, which is NOT what I want. I don't need 3G or any other type of phone or data connection associated with the network. All I want to be able to do is use Fring/skype/googlevoice through a WiFi connection. I've been reading and am getting confused with all this 'APN' on/off stuff. Can't I just put the phone in airport mode and connect to WiFi through my DINC?

View 2 Replies View RelatedSlightly off topic, but for Desire and you lot seem to know your stuff. I'm travelling in the states for a month. Is it worth getting a local sim or just paying the crazy roaming charges. If local sim, what's the best way to get one?
I only really need the internet side of things. Will occasionally check voicemail and the odd text, but those costs will be small. Cycling Vancouver to San Fran so having unlimited access for those 2 weeks would be a massive help. Any ideas? I'm on O2 with an unbranded Desire.
Here's a question that comes from an unclear view of how things work : can a a phone be data roaming without being voice roaming? If so how can a begin data roaming event can be detected? This question came to me from the DDMS options , where one can have" data roaming " and "home voice".

Also below the" data roaming" it also says" data connection was lost because you" it cuts off and I can't figure out what it says

View 3 Replies View RelatedI thought that we were allowed 300 MB of data roaming without running into overages. I checked my bill today online and it said I use 981 KB out of 0 KB of data available while roaming, but it said I was charged $0.00 for this.
View 18 Replies View RelatedWith the 2.1 upgrade, I have a little question about mobile network settings.I do not have 3G and do not have a monthly data plan. In 1.6, all I had to do was tick off "data roaming" in the Mobile Network Settings to make sure I do not ever connect to the 3G network. In 2.1, there are "Data Roaming" and "Data Traffic". If I were to tick off "Data Roaming", would that mean that the "Data Traffic" is no longer in use either, even if its ticked on? I do not want to tick off the "Data Traffic" option because it leaves a huge ugly picture on the notification bar.Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I do not want an abundance phone bill due to this!

View 6 Replies View RelatedI was trying to find out from T-mobile, how long 15 PAYG foreign Data roaming (I'm from the UK, but travelling to Belgium for a few days) would last. I know it depends on usage, but they couldn;t tell me if I, say, checked my emails a couple of times and used the GPS a couple of times a day, how big a chunk of my 15 it would take.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've got an application which is making a web request every 10s using HttpURLConnection. When the application starts in 3G, it works great. Then I activate Wifi and after that, all my requests fail during exactly 10 minutes with the fallowing exception : Socket is not connected. The behavior is the same if I start in Wifi and then I switch to 3G. What's the problem here ? Do we need to setup something at socket level ? a timeout (10 minutes is the default one) ?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI live in Singapore and need to travel around 6-8 times a year. Being in Singapore, all travel is international hence data roaming charges apply.Every time I travel, I go through a laborious process to reset my wireless / sync / settings.I am hunting for a 'Data Roaming Manager' app where I can define profiles with associated wireless / sync settings. I could define a profile that specifies the settings I described above. After I define the profile once, every time I travel, I just need to toggle the settings on/off. A key need is that this app should cover all possible wireless / sync / download settings. Anything that impacts data download/upload.I don't have the necessary skills to create an app like this but am willing to work with someone who does. I am reasonable sure that people would be willing to pay for such an app at the right price.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm on a tmobile contract, free mobile, included, and I notice there's an option in my hero's setting which is unchecked at present for data roaming. I tried checking it, and it warned of the prospect of extra chrarges. Will this be the case, with my contract?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI hope someone can help me with this, since searching has not yielded any help. I am overseas with my DHD and continue to receive SMS messages even though I turned data roaming off. I know I am being charged for this and now I am too afraid of turning the phone back on. I just want to use it for wireless and downloading some new apps, without phone calls or messaging.
View 2 Replies View RelatedJust wondering if anyone knows how data roaming works with Sprint. I was in an area where I was roaming but it seemed as though the Facebook app was updating. Maybe I hit a pocket of wifi access, I dunno. So, is data roaming happening? If so, is it included under the "no roaming charges" umbrella that comes with the Everything plans or could be be charged for roaming data?
View 2 Replies View RelatedJust back from a very nice vacation in Iceland, and await the data roaming bill from my phone company. I hope for the best having limited my traffic as much as possible, but I want to know in advance. I used the very nice app NetCounter but it didn't measure roaming data traffic at all.So I want to build my own app measuring just roaming data traffic. I have a few booleans to start with ( NetworkInfo.IsRoaming() & TelephonyManager. isNetworkRoaming() ), but I'm not sure how to measure the traffic if true.So the question is: How do I measure data traffic while roaming? (Something like API level 8 TrafficStats functionality is what I'm after, but for API level 3). The used SmartPhone is Samsung Galaxy i7500 (Android 1.6)
View 2 Replies View RelatedI want to adjust some settings to disable/enable data roaming and switch GSM/AUTO mode as the functions provided by Settings.apk(Settings -> Wireless controls -> Mobile networks -> "Data roaming"/"Use only 2G networks").
I know there is a way to get the current setting of data roaming through the api android.provider.Settings.Secure.DATA_ROAMING. But I don't know if I could change here to control the usage of Data roaming. If it is nothing but the status of data roaming. Changing here will cause the state of the system inconsistent.
Although I could find the api related to Data roaming, I can't find any thing about switching GSM/AUTO mode except for some internal api.
BTW, before this discussion I has posted an old related discussion, but I can't find it from the groups. Does this mean the system miss the discussion I posted?
How could I detect that the phone is data roaming ?
