Aug 3, 2010I don't understand the tethering could someone give me a example on how it works?

View 1 RepliesWhile USB tethering over 3G/4G networks doesn't work unless you pay for the $30/mo hotspot feature (which I still cannot get Sprint to admit is a stupid name since I don't want a hotspot, only tethering, but I digress), you can tether and use the phone's WiFi connection.
Why would you want to? Well, I have a laptop that requires a USB dongle and now I have one less thing to carry. OK, not the best reason, but I found it interesting.
WIFI tethering. Is there a app that works with a rooted moment running jc v7
View 2 Replies View RelatedI don't really understand it. Could someone please explain to me how they both work. I'm not the best and brightest person when it comes to understand it.
View 3 Replies View RelatedIs it possible that I can relay my wifi internet connection using this feature? I tried but when I start tethering, it automatically stops my wifi connection.
View 4 Replies View RelatedWhen I'm away from home without a WiFi connection it seems like nothing works. You Tube, Last FM, eBay and worst of all any of the three different types of Twitter I have. Some of these apps are incredibly slow or others just give up. I've never been able to upload a picture via Twitter using any platform. Really annoying. Seems my Gmail isn't even notifying my anymore.. Have I done something? Is this linked to Orange's notoriously poor set up?
Will rooting my phone help? I'm already running out of space on my phone after downloading what I consider a fairly small number of apps. Why don't they save to, and run off, the SD card?
I have a Orange (UK) Desire which i have gold carded and unbranded with no problems.
Software info below
Firm Ver 2.1-update 1
Baseband 32.30.00.28u_4.05.00.11
Kernel version 2.6.29-97da29ed
htc-kernel@and18-2#1
Build Number 1.15.405.3 CL150129 release-keys
Software number 1.15.405.3
Browser Webkit 3.1
There is now a software update available (1.15.405.4) which i have tried to install OTA it all works except it says unable to start WIFI. I have tried to install it with both my Goldcard and normal SD card (not sure if that would make any difference)
If you have flashed your rom or rooted, did you get tethering to work? if you have NOT flashed rom but you rooted, did you get tethering to work? if you flashed but did NOT root, did you get tethering to work? if you did NOT flash and did NOT root, did you get tethering to work? would like to install pdanet solution to tethering which states it works without rooting.

View 11 Replies View RelatedIs there a wireless tethering App that works with the HTC One?
I really like the HTC One, except for the glaring problem that HTC phones don't work with Foxfi. I'm going to upgrade my phone soon, and while the HTC One is my first choice, if I can't find a wireless tethering solution I'll end up going with the Samsung Galaxy S4 instead.
So I did like this: I made a backup with myBackup. I reseted the phone to factory deafults. I launched it back and checked tethering - it was working fine, as it should. I restored my backup of apps and data, without phone settings. The tethering doesn't work anymore. Could there be an app which is disabling it and common to all of us having this problem?
I include list of my apps created with MyAppsList:

Already tried this, but it worked good for me...

I used to have a samsung moment that was rooted and i used the samsung moment wifi tethering program. I just got the HTC Evo 4G yesterday and rooted it using the Unrevoked method (not sure if there is another). I then downloaded the Wireless Tether for root users. For some reason i cant get anthing to recognize it. I've tried looking for the signal with my ipod and laptop but nothing! What setting needs to be changed? I have tried to find this issue on other posts, but nothing.

I am doing some xml parsing stuff through Internet. i set the <uses-permission> on my Manifest. it works fine in WI-FI Network. But its not working in the Motorola Droid 2.1 with 3G Network. Is there any more specific stuff to do for 3G network?

1. On your phone go to Settings > Applications > Development > and enable USB debugging.
2. Go to unrevoked.com on your HTC EVO web browser and download it and install it.
3. Run the Revoked program and click on Start. You should get a message that says, "successfully rooted"
4. Go to http://bit.ly/c2oonC and download and install the wireless_tether_2_0_2.apk with your HTC EVO web browser.
5. Run Wireless WiFi Tether (When a box pops up, click on ALLOW)
Notes:
- When you restart the phone, you have to root it again to run Wireless tether.
- Sprint will not bill you anything extra, don't worry. Droid, NexusOne users have been doing this for a while with no issues.
- You do not need to have the "$29.95" tethering plan with Sprint.
- WiFi signal is not strong, so your device had to be near by.
- WiFi tethering uses up alot of battery life. About 1% per minute or two (thats constant connection loading webpage/video streaming). WiFi tethering also worked with my iPad.
Just upgraded from DInc to X this week. Rooted - all that fun stuff. Had AP tethering on DInc, I'm still getting adHoc with X even with version 2.0.5-pre 7. Is anyone else getting AP tethering or do we need to wait for the froyo kernal? I had originally thought any phone with the VZW wifi hotspot app had AP tethering capabilities in its kernal already.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI hate to start a new thread but I searched the forum for an answer with no success. I'M a SWAC customer and my fiance is my sponsor. She is concerned that if I root my Evo and get free Wifi tethering she will possibly get fired if Sprint notices the larger amount of data usage. Has anyone ever heard of a Sprint employee getting fired over rooting their phone? I want to root but not at the expense of getting my fiance fired.

View 2 Replies View RelatedSo I just rooted my phone yesterday with the new unrevoked 3 and mainly for the purpose of getting the WiFi tethering app back. Yes, it worked, but man has it been a sad day. I've been reading posts of people having great speeds and here I am trying to enjoy my 0.4 kbps down and 0.3 kbps up speeds, but it sure is hard when other devices can't even use the connection because it's so insanely low. I'm just wondering if anyone else is having this problem?
Is it because of the new root? Is it because of my phone? I used to have okay speeds before with just having a rooted phone via unrevoked 1. I don't know if it's my data network either because it still loads sites pretty well and downloads just fine. It's just the WiFi tethering that is horrible. I tried playing around with the settings (LAN, channels, etc.,) and to no avail, as well as moving around the house, so now I'm stumped.
I had a rooted Evo with 3.26 build with wifi tethering that worked PERFECTLY, got damaged, so my insurance replaced it, and now I have a brand new Evo 4g with 3.29.651.5 build that I just rooted and downloaded wifi tethering, but can't get online! I have "limited connectivity". I didn't have this issue with my last Evo. Anyone else had this problem with a new Evo before?
View 5 Replies View RelatedWifi tethering with BB.9... I've read around and done a couple searches but actually couldn't find the simple answer. What can and can't I do with my phone while tethering?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm kind of ashamed to ask this but I'm curious. Now that I have Froyo and the option in settings to WiFi tether will I get charged an extra fee from Verizon for doing so?
And if so, what are my options for doing it for free with-out root? I don't ever use it nor do I really need it but I can foresee in the future using it some random day.
Wireless tether worked perfectly before installing custom rom. I still have android.tether folder on sd card with fw bcm4329 but cant get wireless tethering to work again. can revert to stock nandroid backup and wireless tether works fine.
CODE:..........................
I mainly want to root my droid to be able to use the(wireless) wifi tethering. Can someone recommend a good ROM which will support this feature.
