I've never owned a smartphone before and feel as if now is the time to get one as the buttons on my 2nd hand sony erricson c905 are starting to fall off.
I live in the uk and stuck between the HTC desire and Nexus One Froyo. From what I have read and learned, they are essentially the same phone, except nexus one receives the updates the quickest as it is the 'google experience' phone.
Right now im leaning more towards the nexus as it seems the froyo really does give the phone a stronger advantage. JIT, better interface etc... Am not that bothered about SenseUI and heard that froyo does make senseUI unnecessary in some areas. Despite rumors about the desire updating to froyo, majority of people are saying that it will be likely be autumn before the desire gets an update. So now that the froyo is picking up the interface and other substantial areas, what now gives the desire the edge over nexus?
I can't decide which phone to get, I'm currently between HTC Desire and Nexus one. I'm been reading reviews while doing some comparisons to try to decide on this.
When the phones were first released I remember reading that the two main difference was that the Desire would have Flash support but not the Nexus One and also of course Sense UI.
In 2.2/Froyo I believe that has been rectified and we can get Flash on the Nexus One as well, please do correct me if I am wrong.
As for Sense UI, I understand it's an Interface developed by HTC to place over Android. From what I have been reading, Android does not need Sense UI to run. So what makes Sense UI so special? What can it do and so on that the Nexus one cannot?
I'm essentially looking for whats the difference between the Desire and Nexus One.
I used to have nexus one, with Froyo 2.2. Unfortunately i dropped the phone one too many times and the LCD is cracked, hence i gotten myself a new HTC desire.
My questions:
1) how to i re install all my apps(previously installed on N1) to Desire. Besides trying to remember each app and manually installing them one by one
2) can i just use my old SD card (with music and Froyo, etc) from N1 and use it on desire? Or should i mirgate all data out, format using Desire and re use as a brand new card?

That the Desire seems to have dock connectors on the bottom like the N1. Anyone now anything about this for sure? Will it fit the N1 dock?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI`v tried a few different replacement home programs & at the moment quite like Desktop. I did like ADW, but the launcher and any themes were `stuck` in the internal memory - which I`ve got precious little left. Desktop seems to run great - but - when I connect the phone to the PC on a usb the launcher stops (as the sd card is unmounted). When I remove the usb I can reselect the launcher but the widgets disappear. Is this something specific to Desktop, the desire, android or just me ! I didn't seem to have a problem when running Launcher pro.

I guess that a few relatively simple adaptations to the 'Stock Android Launcher' could provide what I'm looking for.

Must say I'm loving android, for the sheer ability to customise it, altough not brave enough to root yet!
Installed folder organiser and launcher pro plus cos I want to change icons and names of folders etc.
My problem is when I switch from sense to laucher pro, i lose my data connection widget/ shortcut and cant get it back. On my sense screen I have the power control widget, which gives me the wifi connection toggle and also a mobile web toggle. I want a mobile web toggle that works with launcher pro.
Downloaded the widgets pack from curvefish, but the APN on/off does nothing at all.
So I got this error today, and thought I'd share my woe. Some quick internet searches suggest it to be a fairly common issue on Android phones. Basically, when it happens, this error pops up when you turn your phone on, and the phone won't boot up. There's nothing you can do other than hard-reset, unfortunately, by switching it off, holding down both volume buttons, and then switching it on. You then select 'clear user data'. I am somewhat peeved, as it'll take me hours to get my phone set up again, but I'm happy it's alive again! And this time I'm going to make a backup.

Anyway, I uninstalled it and now HTC sense is force closing all the time and I am unable to get to the app settings to see what the problem is. get me to a place where I can sort this out. Will I have to do some form of hard reboot?
Is there a way of getting the main friend stream widget working when using Launcher pro or is there another app that does a similar thing.

I really just want rid of Sense, and to run with the native Android UI where possible. I like the Nexus One menu, but prefer the Desire hardware, like the buttons at the bottom, etc.

Now I'm stuck between these 2 choices, I don't know wich to buy. They say Desire has nothing more than nexus one but flash support and Sense UI. Do you guys leave mobile internet on then use a data connection toggle like on switch pro to enable disable as and when you like? Or do you use a toggle like curvefish apn to rename and automatically connect to the network? Or do you turn it on and off via settings or the power button as and when you need it? Bit lost on the subject to be honest. Also when I go and turn mobile internet on in the settings under it it says something like connect to mobile internet when WiFi is unavailable. Is this the default setting or can it be changed to only connect when I want it to?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI currently and have had since day one a Nexus One on tmobile , the issue is tmobile does not have 3G in my area and this is limiting what I can do with the phone as you can imagine. Another carrier (cdma for the most part , Cellular South) is coming out with the Desire and they're 3G coverage in my area is great.
I absolutely love the stock Android operating system and use the Wiimote app often , I hear it doesn't work with sense UI. Are there any other differences in the use between the Nexus and the Desire? How about swapping all of my information over? Will my lookout backup app be able to swap between the two, etc etc. Basically looking for an informed person to let me know what all will change/ be involved in the changeover and day to day use.
Which one, Im having a really hard time to choose one. I do like sense ui and thats steering me towards the Desire more at the moment. So would like some more opinions.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI want an NexusOne but it's a bit expensive in my country and I was thinking about the new HTC DESIRE. The specs are top notch and I can live with that tiny chin (I would prefer without it). The rest of the differences are ok except one: it's not a "google phone". The most annoying thing about galaxy was the lack of support and while latest android version reached 2.1, galaxy was still struggling with 1.5. I fear this will be the case with DESIRE too since it's not an official google phone (see hero case).
Perhaps being so similar in specs with nexus could make it easier for modders to port latest nexus rom to desire (I heard they already ported desire rom to nexus for the "sense" theme)? I really want what iphone fans have: instant upgrade to the latest (and greatest??) OS version (I hate iPhones btw).

Btw, last week i have already ordered a non-oem battery+cradle charger off ebay. are non-oem batteries reliable?
if HTC Incredible/Nexus batteries are compatible with the Desire? I think i've seen some mention of people using Nexus batteries and as long as it's the standard capacity it should fit right? Whilst I doubt the capacity is as good as the official HTC ones you can get a charger and two 1400mah batteries on eBay for the price of a single Desire battery here..

Was quickly reading a review of the Desire and read it has touch-to-focus. Was just wondering if anyone who is actually running the modaco desire ROM on their N1 can confirm whether this works? I'd also be interested to know if I could just use the desire camera app on a rooted N1 with Cynanogen? I'm rather partial to the stock appearance and not massively inclined towards Sense UI.
