HTC Desire :: Need Multi Language Dictionary
Jun 29, 2010
Does anyone know how I can enable one or more languages other than my default(English). i.e I have need to type some messages in German, this is no problem with an English keyboard but the dictionary auto-corrects it to an English word. I am sure I could disable auto-correct but I would rather not.

Does anyone know of an app or a way to add French to the Android dictionary so that I can text in French without it always trying to correct it in English? I want English as the base language just want to add French in as well without having to go into the dictionary and add French words like crazy I did find an app called "Slide it" that appears to offer something that will do this but just wanted to ask the experts first....plus it's not free so I hate to purchase this if it won't do what I need

If I run my android application with a HTC magic with locale English, I find my application running properly and if I try to run it on Motorola droid with locale Korean, My application(apk) is not even installing on the device. Does android support different language? Is it is because of different language OS versions?

I read http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/resources/resources-i18n.html. But it shows how to localize your app for the currently selected locale of the phone. However, I want to add a "language" option into my own app, and allow the user to switch the UI language independent of the phone's locale setting.
My currently solution is to manage a string table myself, and dynamically edit the text string of every UI element. However, this is rather tedious. Is there a better way?

I've got a dictionary.com app on my phone, cant remember if I downloaded it or if it came with the phone and as such not sure if everyone has it or not. Basically it gives me a widget which I had on my 7th homescreen that gives me a 'word of the day' each day which I quite liked. Since I upgraded to Froyo, the widget isn't working, it keeps force closing but the main app itself works.

There's something wrong with my Desire. Sometimes the multi touch doesn't work at all. In that case, I have to reboot the phone. I don't know why. This thing happened 4 times today. And another problem is turning on the Desire. Sometimes the phone vibrates shortly for 5-6 times and cannot turn on unless I take out the battery and re-insert it. What's wrong with the phone?

I do not have the option for "User Dictionary" when I press the settings key (button that looks like a gear at the bottom left of keyboard). I think its because of my location. I'm from Singapore and the keyboard that comes with it is a "CN Thai Keyboard". The settings button has a "abc" or "<chinese character>" below the "gear" symbol that toggles between chinese or english input when pressed. If held, some chinese input entry method options appear. No sight of an option to edit my user dictionary.
I want to edit the dictionary to remove wrongly spelled words I accidentally entered. I know the majority of you guys have another keyboard that came with your phone, and prob don't have this problem, but just wondering if someone from this forum might know..

I saw the User Dictionary Manager on the market which would had been GREAT but it doesn't work on HTC Desire (and a few other HTCs). Any suggestions?

I'm running Ginger Villain 3.3 (16-10) on a HTC desire and I've had some rather odd incidents with the Danish dictionary.
Is it possible to update it to a working version? EG:
I tried to write "spiser" (eat) but it suggested "spiser r" (Sophagus)
When I wrote "klokken" (at) it suggested klokkesl t" (time)
It changes simple every day words into complicated - rarely used words.

Am i able to change the inbuilt dictionary as i've added words that shouldn't have and now it is starting to choose them.
I have a hotmail programme and a gmail one. Am i able to amalgamate them into one programme. They also do not seem to get email unless i manually refresh. I have gone into settings but it seems to be ok in there regarding when and how often i want it updated.
Battery seems to be a real stinker, I'm getting roughly 7-8 hours before it's telling me to recharge. No live scenes, wifi off anything I'm missing?
I'm on 3 how do i check to see if i can update to 2.2?

I just received my HTC Desire, which is great. My main problem with it so far is that the keyboard only supports English and French, and I need to write in Spanish. I've seen other people saying theirs additionally supports Spanish and Italian - is there any way I could add those languages? I only seem to have English and French locales, can I install new locales? I realise there are a number of third party keyboards, but I really like the default one.

I like the HTC contacts widget, but i'd like it to be horizontal instead of taking up the a half of a page.
Is there a similar widget that can be shown horizontal?
If not, is there a widget/app to help with this......
I have quickdial shortcuts on the home screen, but as it's only a call or message, i find i've got a couple duplicated.
What i'd like is the same picture shortcut, but if you press or hold it, then a slide-off or drop-down will show to select action, be it call, sms, email etc. (With the bonus of setting the default action).

I just bought an unlocked HTC Desire from Hong Kong. I haven't put a sim card in it yet as I'm waiting for my old plan to live out its contract, but I couldn't resist having a play with the Desire in the mean time Because I bought it from overseas I can only seem to set my default language as English and then in brackets many Asian country options, eg English (Thailand) and English (Singapore). This would be fine except it is becoming frustrating when typing because all of the predictive text etc has many Asian characters in it and I'm struggling to write accurately.I've tried turning off predictive text and 'check invalid sequence', but it doesnt seem to work? I also tried downloading the application 'more locale 2' which had english (australian) but it doesnt seem to affect the keyboard. Does anyone have any advice regarding how to change the initial language setting? Is there any chance that when I put an Australian sim card into it the language options will change?

So there's the multitouch issue with the Nexus One and HTC Desire. Is there some documentation on what other devices have this hardware error and what the total market share is? If you had a game idea that needs massive multitouch gestures, would you go for it on Android or would it currently be a waste of time with only a few devices supporting it?

I'm doing a bit of online copy-writing on the side at the moment, and it would be great if I could use this thing to write a few paragraphs here and there when I'm on the move. How would the HTC Desire handle multi-tasking between a browser and a basic text editor? I won't be looking for any crazy formatting options; don't need to change margins, add pagination or anything. Just a few sites open for researching facts and an application that can handle badly worded sentences with lame jokes thrown in
My contract is due to run out soon and I'm not sure whether I should negotiate one with a free Desire, or get a cheap handset and then buy a netbook. I'm broke at the moment so its a case of either/or!

Does anyone know of some alternative JVM language, however obscure it might be, which can compile to plain old java bytecode, without the need of a language runtime.I need this in order to try to develop android applications without startup or size penalty. Scala, Clojure and Groovy all require its own runtime library distributed with the application, so they are out of the scope of this question. The only one language which claims to satisfy this goal is Charles Nutter's Mirah, but I couldn't make it to work on windows. To clarify a bit, I know any language has to have runtime library. Obviously, what I am looking for is a language that has no additional runtime required besides JRE, or at least very limited one.

I bought an HTC Magic today and, as I always did with other phones too, set the language to english. The problem is I happen to write a lot of messages (email and SMS) in italian too.Is there a way to set the completion language separately from the GUI language? Even better if during the editing of a message would be possible to switch the language, as possible with Nokia phones. Please note that in the subject I mentioned erroneusly T9 which has nothing to do with completion, as I now learned.
