HTC Desire :: Internet Usage / How To Know Phone Is Using Data Or Not?
Jun 19, 2010
On the HTC Desire how do I tell if my phone is using the Internet? I have 500mb of internet and I dont know if my phone is on the internet after I close the browser. e.g. If I just return to the homepage after using facebook, does the browser automatically close and does not count as Internet usage anymore?

So I've had my DHD for 3 days, done a little 3G browsing the usual stuff Facebook, emails etc., but nothing more as I used my home WiFi for the widget and app downloads. But today I got a text from Vodafone saying I was near my internet usage limit for the Month! Within 3 days!? I have a 750MB limit, which the chap in the shop assured me was enough to keep me happy as 'no one ever goes over that.'
I was happy with that even though my previous contract was unlimited internet as he said it would be ok. All I can think of is the email syncing, so turned that off. But what else could be causing me to go over the 750MB limit within 3 days? Surely thats a huge amount to be used?

I've tried to see if others have had data problems like mine, but apparently no one has posted on something of my magnitude.
I have 1 Gb of data a month...thats one of the biggest plans in Canada, and I cannot increase (student plan maximum). A few weeks ago, my 3G watchdog alerted me that I was over my 1Gb, and this was in a week span of a new billing cycle. I called Telus and they said it was a mistake, but later on my data usage on their site said I had used 500 Mb on that day!
Since then I had a few more instances where 400 or 500 Mb has been used on a day (almost all outgoing or transmitting data). This has to be a syncing problem or a bug. Not only do I not stream radio or youtube, but I usually only use facebook, twitter, read yahoo email, and weather updates.
I had to get a datablock for the rest of the billing month (since I had used up 2.2 Gb in 10 days) and now I'm monitoring my data wifi usage through data counter widget.
It would be wonderful if I could figure out what app is sucking all of my data...I have about 500 friends on facebook...I also went though and deleted almost all of my emails in my inbox (which was the problem with motorola data usage).
Yesterday, I was on the net on postsecret, and then on facebook (maybe 15 minutes total). Upon returning I saw I had used 510 Mb of transmitting data....
The only advice I got from Telus is to format my phone and start over...No other problems with the HTC desire have been reported to my provider.

Are there any inbuilt classes ya methods that help to count the number of bytes sent/received. I'm trying to develop a light weight browser and am doing this as an option. As mobile users are charged based on the bytes they browse. I think this is a mandatory requirement but the more I google it The less I find?

O2 have changed the bolt on I had from unlimited usage of internet to 500mb per month. The row I had with them was of no benefit. Anyway, in the space of 3 days I have used 100mb already & haven't really been using browser or downloading (I did obtain album artwork for transferred music files on Mediascape though). Is it possible that Timescape updates of Twitter & Facebook are draining my monthly allowance? I would check emails on the phone too. Haven't been watching YouTube or anything like that.

Got Orange panther 40 unlimited and tonight have had them confirm its 1gb fair usage policy. Although as good as they are it does keep changing. Anyway did a small experimentation with 3g watchdog and tonight I've scooted around a few forums and its used 7 mb seems a lot.

I just signed up for these forums because soon I will be an HTC Desire owner in Canada. Having never owned a smartphone before I do have a few questions. The plan I intend on signing up for is the Telus Student 40 and that will come with only 100mb of data. Now I don't see myself being too data using heavy so I feel like I will be able to live with it. However I do have some questions regarding my data consumption.
1. Is it possible to completely stop all data usage by somehow disabling the data connection if I find myself reaching my limit?
2. What are ways to track my data usage to make sure I don't use too much data?
3. What are good ways to conserve data usage? I'm getting the feeling that there are some applications that will constantly be sending data back and forth updating themselves, is it possible to have these applications but stop them from constantly updating and only have them update when I want to access the application?.........

Have you found any app to monitor data usage app by app? I really need something to find out which app is transmitting, because since I installed Froyo, I'm having ridiculous amounts of data downloaded to the phone, but I don't know where it's all going.

Decided on getting a desire on 3 from CPW after advice on here yesterday. Not actually ordered yet; its bank holiday weekend so it not be here till at least Wednesday anyway. Just wondered about 3s fair usage policy on data. On the contract info on CPW it just says unlimited internet *subject to fair usage policy. Doesn't say how much that is though. Is it 500mb or 1gb?

My phone seemed to be using a lot of my months quota of data without me actually doing anything. I thought it may have something to do with google collecting location data in the background so turned off 'use wireless networks' in location settings. This seems to have fixed the problem but is there a way of having this setting enabled so the phone only uses 3G when in an application rather than using my data usage without being in any particular program?

Can't find any previous discussions about this: is there a way I can see how much data is being used by individual apps? I use 3G watchdog to monitor total data usage, but I can't find a way to see what is using the data.
Last month I used about 550mb of my 750mb FUP allowance without doing anything to limit data use. Nothing has changed, but this month Watchdog is predicting a total use of 1.2gb at my next billing date!

I've spent the last 2 hours listening to a mix of mp3's that were either pre-loaded onto my sd card and that I've added to it myself (40-60 split) and I've noticed on 3G watchdog that my usage has shot up 40% odd!Why has this happened when I'm listening to stuff from my sd card?I have installed the last.fm app for what it's worth, is it doing soemthing it shouldn't be? I've had a look in my task manager and there is nothing obvious running that shouldn't be, if that makes sense.

I've used the search and read all thread that include "data" in the post's title. Lots of it was helpful, yet I have a few questions. This morning as a test to see how much data my phone uses just for syncing and any kind of background data, I turned on the network data and syncing.
after 20 mins it was up to 1.5mb (according to my data counter widget). I downloaded the Spare Parts app which shows me what instances use how much data; very useful. The 1.5mb I'm stating here already exclude RSS updates and a few web pages I loaded this morning. This 1.5mb is ONLY the syncing stuff. So my question is: Why and how can it be so much data? I use gmail and google calendar and contacts, and have some 400+ friends of Facebook (FB). Calendar and FB were already synced yesterday before I went to bed. How can another sync use so much data? It wasn't my email (Gmail) as there weren't many this morning.
The calendar sync apprently took up 468kb, and a process called "UID 10027" which i presume is FB? used 555kb. I'm really puzzled by these numbers. as google sync happens frequently throughout the day unless I activate it, usually i get up to 15mb a day without actually doing much (i.e. no browsing, no RSS feeds updates, no streaming). Why is the FB and Google sync taking up so much data? I downloaded FB for android, which replaced the FB for HTC application (so now I have inbox, and not the stupid "Take a Picture" in the app thank god) which doesn't even use the sync from the account settings but has its own update cycle which I had turned to 'manual'. Ialready switched off the "use WiFi for location" because I heard google maps otherwise constantly searches in the background

I am taking a holiday to South West France (Nantes Area) in July and hope to use Google Navigation but I am a bit concerned about data usage. I am on t-mobile 3gb limit but that won't apply as soon as I go out of UK coverage, bearing in mind $5.00 per a MB I could use a a lot of MBs to make a 200 mile journey. What my main concerns are,
1. Although I can set up Google to navigate to where I am going at home, will it cache the route but if I exit Google Nav is the route deleted.
2. Would it be best to buy a euro data bundle from t-mobile,I don't intend using the phone for anything else, apart from perhaps an odd call or text.
3. Try another Navigation app, have tried Andnav2 but can't seem to extract the maps onto my phone and have tried it where I live and it wanted to send me a longer route down country lanes rather than the direct route.
4. Buy a French PAYG SIM card with some data allowance, could be difficult as my French is not that fluent!
5. Buy a Navigation app such as Destinator 9,don't really want to pay for something like that. Perhaps I could get away with the trial period.
6. Scrap the whole idea and use some thing like mapdroid,or just buy a road map.
I just want to get to my destination without paying a fortune or running up a huge bill without knowing it.

There have been numerous times when people have tried to phone me and it's gone straight to voicemail. I know when using GPRS you can't use voice and data at the same time but I can't figure out what's using the data stream. I only have the weather application which updates every 3 hours but even when it's not due an update this issue has occurred. Can anyone suggest how to figure out what's using data? The only fix I can think of is to turn off Internet while in a GPRS area assuming the problem is a clash of data / voice.

I updated my unbranded desire to FroYo, and now I really wish I hadn't. Anything that requires data not Working as previously. My email is no longer push - I have to go in and manually refresh - which takes at least 5 minutes, and in the case of my exchange email, usually results in a sync error. Twidroyd, Twitter, Peep, Facebook, all timeout whenever I want to refresh them; I may get one proper update a day, but the rest of the time, nada.
Internet is so slow now, I just give up half the time. WiFi flickers on and off, even though it's set to on all the time. Anyone got any ideas of stuff I can check, or whether I can un update - I love the aps2sd and stuff, but it's bricked the rest of my phone. It's getting to the point where I'm actually starting to dislike the phone because it just doesn't work.

I got an unlocked one from HTC, and when i was using my (now expired) orange sim card the data connectivity worked fine (HSDPA).
Now that i'm with T-mobile, can someone confirm that when they turn mobile browsing on, the 'Access point name is only "MOBILE WORLD_WAP"?
Then there's another option below that reads : "Mobile World" ..
The settings i have for that don't seem to be working, and it's messing everything up (market place won't update, internet doesn't work, and maps can't syncronise - EVEN THOUGH the "H" sign on working on the top left with both up and down arrows flashing/holding)..
The settings I have under "Mobile World" are:

I have one question thats really been bugging me because I can't seem to find it any where over the internet. My question is, Can i totally block off Data Usage through just the phone itself? Is there any possible solutions? I want this phone, but just to have the wifi capability, I do not want any expensive data charges. If this phone is not possible to do so, I know some are, but I do not know which. How about the Htc Touch Diamond? Or any other phones you guys possibly know of that can disable the data function.

I plan to upgrade to a 4G LTE device this year. Typically, my usage on my 3G device (a Droid 2 Global) runs less than 1 GB a month. Have any people experienced increases in their monthly data usage after switching to a 4G-enabled device? And if so, do you think it would be due to the fact that you're consuming more data at a faster rate, watching more videos, streaming more content through your cellular data network because of the increased capability?
I'm trying to decide between buying old technology off of a third party (e.g. Droid 4/Razr Maxx at no contract) or upgrading to the latest and best (GS3/Razr Maxx HD) for the same cost, but losing the unlimited.

Took my HTC Desire to Italy and since then have lost all mobile data connections - though works fine on WiFi. Switched on airplane mode for flights, and switched off data roaming to reduce overseas costs. But when switched back on to use internet couldn't get any network connection. Now back in the UK still same issue - no internet, and cannot send MMS picture messages - even when in strong 3G signal Tried all the options I can find but no joy at all.

Unbranded, fully updated (2.1-update1), Desire. Three months old. No task killers installed. Just this past couple of days I've noticed it has not been showing the data connection symbol in the top bar, next to the signal strength bars. Try and connect to the internet or the market and get a 'failed' pop up window asking to either retry of cancel. Retry never works.
I go into settings > Wireless & Networks and disable Mobile Network, then enable it again and it flickers on then goes off again. Repeat this and it stays on for a while but always goes off again after about 20 minutes even though the Mobile Network is ticked green. Why is this happening? I'm missing emails because of this and it's a bit of a pain.

Currently using launcherpro as default but having a little problem with my data connection. Do you guys leave mobile internet on then use a data connection toggle like on switch pro to enable disable as and when you like? Or do you use a toggle like curvefish apn to rename and automatically connect to the network? Or do you turn it on and off via settings or the power button as and when you need it? Bit lost on the subject to be honest. Also when I go and turn mobile internet on in the settings under it it says something like connect to mobile internet when WiFi is unavailable. Is this the default setting or can it be changed to only connect when I want it to?

I would like advice from those with 2.2 on Orange. I've had my Desire for 2 months now and love it-apart from one thing-the damned Internet connection. Quite often, with a strong 3G+ (HSDPA) signal, my internet connection fails to load data. Then, a few minutes later, in the same location, it works perfectly. I know for a fact that this is not a network only problem. The reason I know this is because I previously used the exact same SIM in my iphone for 6 months in the very same locations and it always worked perfectly.
Therefore, my strong suspicion is that the problem is a result of the combination of the Orange branding on a Desire and the network itself. I'm sure I read of a couple of posters here who had the very same problems and when they moved to 2.2 the problem disappeared. Can anyone confirm? I've been waiting patiently for the Orange update to 2.2 but am getting fed up and I'm concerned that the Orange bloatware may still cause an issue after this. Hence, I'm considering a debrand and update myself.
