HTC Desire :: How To Turn Off Roaming?
Apr 23, 2010
I am thinking about getting a Desire on Vodafone uk. I live in Northern Ireland near the Irish border and have to turn off roaming on my current phone because when driving around the area it can alternate between Vodafone uk and Vodafone ie. Before I make the change could someone tell me if it is possible to turn off roaming?

I just have a few questions i hope somebody can answer them .
- How do you turn roaming off on the HTC EVO?
- I noticed when viewing mail other than Gmail, my inboxes do not display all of my mail, only about 25+ out of my 100+ total. If this is normal, someone please let me know. If not please let me know how to modify the mail settings so i can view all my messages (i was not able to find any specific setting to do this myself).
- I noticed when going under Settings>Applications>Manage Applications there is about a 30 sec. loading/lag delay when the manage application menu is loading. I did encounter a Force Close error 1 time and had to restart phone. The long load time still happens after multiple hard boots to the phone. I was wondering if this is normal and if anyone else is experiencing this. If not i am happily open to any suggestions. This also happens when viewing running services but only with a 15 sec load time. (i have no 3rd party apps installed except for qik, google goggles, google maps, google earth, and google sky map)
- I have terrible signal in my house and get dropped calls all the time (not the EVO's fault) i never recieve a "drop call tone" which would be helpful that way i'm not left talking to myself. Does anyone know how to enable a drop call tone if possible?
- I searched everywhere for a "Notes" app on the EVO and did not find one in stock. A little weird to me because most phones come with some kind of note taking tool. ; Anyone have any good n safe suggestions for apps?
- Can someone explain the Android Power Bar Widget to me? I dont know what the "Circular arrows are for" what does it mean?
- I am just curious, does anyone know if there is some type of external "universal keyboard" compatible with the EVO.
*sorry for bombarding with all these questions. I'm just a happy EVO user wanting to learn more about his phone.

Is there a shortcut or widget to simply turn off/on the data roaming option? It would be so much easier than going through home/ settings/ data manager/data delivery/data roaming/click.Don't see anything in the Market that serves CDMA or the X.

I go to the settings>wireless & networks>mobile networks and didn't find any option to turn this off. Also looked everywhere in the sounds menu and nothing - am I missing something? There is an option in my EVO but I find nothing in the Epic 4G - inside our house we get poor reception (Airave here I come!), so the Epic connects regularly to a Verizon tower and that sound is driving me crazy!

I have a Telus Desire which I have debranded (running Froyo) and unlocked. I have a Rogers sim card. I have been in Tokyo twice now and I am unable to find a network here. Even when I search for one I am unable to find it. Is my problem because of the rom I have used? I know there are Desires sold in Japan and they work but I am at a loss.

Yep. So. It appears that roaming becomes activated from time to time on my phone. For no discernable reason. Anyone else had this issue? Or can anyone suggest a remedy.

I hope someone can help me with this, since searching has not yielded any help. I am overseas with my DHD and continue to receive SMS messages even though I turned data roaming off. I know I am being charged for this and now I am too afraid of turning the phone back on. I just want to use it for wireless and downloading some new apps, without phone calls or messaging.

I am currently roaming outside my home network in the UK and cannot get Exchange Server to automatically synch. I have read countless posts on this forum and elsewhere trying to self-help before posting, but despite this one appearing to be the same issue, I have been unable to fix it.
In essence when opening Menu > Settings > Accounts & Synch > Manage Accounts / Exchange Active Sync > Account Settings I see that the option for "Sync when roaming" is not only unticked but also greyed out so I cannot enable it.
How can I fix this, please?
Note that Menu > Settings > Wireless & networks > Mobile Networks > Data roaming is ticked and so is ... > Enable always-on mobile data.
I am currently on an Edge network and manual Exchange Synch works just fine but having automatic sync is more important right now that worrying about the roaming charge.

I've had an unlocked HTC Desire on Three for a couple of months and it's all up-to-date - running on Froyo and updated again just this morning. Yesterday the phone dropped off Three and roamed onto Orange which isn't right because I get a full signal on Three in my house.
I phoned Three last night and they said there wasn't a problem with the network in my area. The woman I spoke to suggested taking the sim card and battery out, leaving it 5 minutes and then trying it. I did this this morning and it made no difference. I also set the phone into 3G only and manually scanned for networks and it couldn't find any.
I phoned again this morning and was told there is a known bug with the HTC Desire locking onto partner networks. I've been told to get the phone flashed but that sounds like a bit of a fob-off to me, especially when I can't find any reference to this problem on the internet.

I am taking a holiday to South West France (Nantes Area) in July and hope to use Google Navigation but I am a bit concerned about data usage. I am on t-mobile 3gb limit but that won't apply as soon as I go out of UK coverage, bearing in mind $5.00 per a MB I could use a a lot of MBs to make a 200 mile journey. What my main concerns are,
1. Although I can set up Google to navigate to where I am going at home, will it cache the route but if I exit Google Nav is the route deleted.
2. Would it be best to buy a euro data bundle from t-mobile,I don't intend using the phone for anything else, apart from perhaps an odd call or text.
3. Try another Navigation app, have tried Andnav2 but can't seem to extract the maps onto my phone and have tried it where I live and it wanted to send me a longer route down country lanes rather than the direct route.
4. Buy a French PAYG SIM card with some data allowance, could be difficult as my French is not that fluent!
5. Buy a Navigation app such as Destinator 9,don't really want to pay for something like that. Perhaps I could get away with the trial period.
6. Scrap the whole idea and use some thing like mapdroid,or just buy a road map.
I just want to get to my destination without paying a fortune or running up a huge bill without knowing it.

Tried to send a text today whilst the phone was connected to T-Mobile (I'm on Orange). The text failed to send, repeatedly. As soon as I got back into Orange coverage, it sent.
Anyone else had this? I'm gonna ring Orange tomorrow, just wondered if it was common?

Slightly off topic, but for Desire and you lot seem to know your stuff. I'm travelling in the states for a month. Is it worth getting a local sim or just paying the crazy roaming charges. If local sim, what's the best way to get one?
I only really need the internet side of things. Will occasionally check voicemail and the odd text, but those costs will be small. Cycling Vancouver to San Fran so having unlimited access for those 2 weeks would be a massive help. Any ideas? I'm on O2 with an unbranded Desire.

So I use the task killer...and at the moment say when I kill tasks it'll tell me there is about 200M avaliable memory free...if I use the phone for a day it'll maybe go down to 150M even if I am still killing apps and there is nothing in 'running services'. If i turn off the phone and turn it back on it goes up to 250M. What is running that I can't stop myself to make it go down from the 250M but that I can just eliminate by turning off the phone?

Last night I put the phone in airplane mode over night.Apns were turned off when I did this. (I do this every night to save battery). This morning, I turned airplane mode off, and tried turning Apn on again, but it wont turn on. (I use Extended Controls Bar widget)I have done a soft reboot (3 actually), but that made no difference. If i go to menu/settings/wifi and network, and look at the text next to the mobile network (Apn) checkbox it says: Connection failed due to incorrect APN setting.I havent changed any settings as far as i know.

i asked this over at the HTC Desire Z forum's as that's the phone I'm after, but I'm guessing that these two phones are more or less the same (apart from the Camera & Keyboard)So Just wondering if anyone knows yet if you can Turn Sense UI Off? I've found a load of topics/videos for turning sense off on the Evo/Desire but not the HD or Z.

Is there a setting that I can use so that the HTC tune does not play when I turn the phone on? Also, is there any way of rebooting the phone without turning it off and then on? Something like a restart in windows.

I have an app that allows me to turn off/on my bluetooth and wifi with one click but can't seem to find one that turns off the GPRS data connection.
I've gone into turn off the Background data but i still get the arrow pointing away from the phone at the top under the "H" symbol showing that data is still being transmitted intermittently. I have set my facebook, email and weather etc to update manually.
the only way that i can stop the arrows under the H from flashing (i presume thats the gprs transfering data) is to have my wifi on then the "H" goes away. But I am trying to conserve battery so i would like to have wifi, bt and gprs off until i need it.

Having discovered that having the Bluetooth enabled all the time more than halves my battery life, I now keep Bluetooth turned off. However, when I get in the car I turn it on. Using the built-in apps to do this is a bit convoluted. What is the quickest way to enable and disable Bluetooth on the HTC Desire?

I can't turn on my HTC Desire SV.This problem arise after unsucessful try update my Android I can't enter boot menu. I try get out battery, press and hold "volume down", insert battery back and press "power", but nothing happens. I get out both SIM and Memory card and try again, but nothing happens too If i connect my HTC to PC, PC define it as "Unknown Device" As i understood, the bootloader crashed probably. To recover bootloader, i need to flash my HTC with special flashing device, e.g. riff box. Is it correct and only solve of my problem? Or other methods to recovery my smartphone (without using special devices) are exist?

It's not a huge deal, I actually don't mind having it on it's just in the interest of conserving battery life I'd quite like to get rid of it. It really don't seem to want to turn off though! I've tried restarting the device but it's still there.

I have the screen controlled whilst charging with Home > menu > settings >applications > development > stay awake checked. Fine but sometimes I do want the screen to power down such as when I am charging from a battery pack rather than wall or car socket. Ideally a button on the Home screen.

I was wondering if I can use the Desire as a wireless adapter for a PC. I mean to connect it through USB so the PC will detect it as a wireless adapter, just like a USB wifi adapter. I'm not talking about tethering and sharing the 3G internet with the PC.
Well, I would like to know if it's possible on any Android device in general, or at least to know if it's just impossible with Android OS.
